Sustainable design calls on a student’s creativity to conceptualize, visualize, analyze, communicate, and build products, buildings, communities, cities, and landscapes that use energy and materials in a more environmentally and socially sustainable manner. You will learn how design can contribute to solving problems of sustainability in a constantly evolving society and building equitable, healthy, and thriving places.

WHY SUSTAINABLE DESIGN AT ILLINOIS? ACADEMICS

• Gateway seminar, FAA 230 Sustainable Design of the Built Environment, introduces sustainability and resilient design, encouraging students to understand and critique different meanings of sustainability and how intentional design can make a difference in our environment.

• Studio work where students learn the basic skills to express ideas graphically and in three dimensions, through hands-on assignments, tutorials, and workshops.

• Capstone seminar and studio to develop and implement students’ own research topics, using multiple representational forms, including writing, drawing, mapping, and modeling. Students receive regular feedback and critique throughout the semester in the form of desk critiques, pin-ups, and formal reviews with Illinois faculty and guests from other institutions.

• Students can identify a specialty area by intentionally selecting their 16 hours of major electives, including options such as Design Thinking, Energy & the Built Environment, Sustainable Fashion Development/ Branding, Product Innovation, and many more • Designated as a STEM degree, which allows for an Optional Practical Training (OPT) Extension for international students on F-1 visas • Over 40 faculty affiliated with the program, teaching and engaging in research related to Sustainable Design

WHY ILLINOIS

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Sustainable Design degree requires a minimum of 120 hours. After completing all campus requirements, most students are also able to complete an undergraduate minor.

The program combines concrete skill development with opportunities to move between disciplinary barriers and traverse traditional boundaries. Students complete a core set of Sustainable Design requirements along with integrated coursework from other disciplines.

• Join a faculty tour of sustainable design in the Champaign-Urbana community, including the Boneyard Creek Restoration, Red Oak Rain Garden, or FreshPress, a sustainable papermaking studio and research lab.

INTERNATIONAL IMMERSION SWEDISH UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES

DIS COPENHAGEN IN DENMARK

Study coursework in sustainability or landscape architecture, including society and environment, systems analysis for sustainable development, conservation, urban agriculture, and more.

Known for its bike-riding culture and architecture and often ranked the happiest city in the world, Copenhagen is a great place to experience a semester abroad. Study sustainable development, environmental impact and policy, Danish design, and innovation through design thinking.

UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD IN ENGLAND Adjacent to Peak District National Park, Sheffield is in a large city surrounded by hillsides and a junction of five rivers with the greatest number of trees per person in all of Europe. Education for Sustainable Development is embedded into the curriculum as part of a campus sustainability strategy with art, design, planning, and landscape courses.

NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE Study global design ethics, sustainable manufacturing, industrial design, and over 30 design and environment courses including energy management, green development, planting design, and more.

LORENZO DE MEDICI IN FLORENCE, ITALY Recognized for its unique architecture, the modern era Florence has become the epitome of a global city, reflecting the world’s diverse cultures and forms of creativity, while remaining faithful to its strong artistic tradition. Study Sustainable Architecture, Architecture in its Environment, Sustainable Design in Interior Design, the Built Environment of Florence, Sustainable Food, and Public Space Design.

LUCERNE UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCE AND ARTS IN SWITZERLAND Study the international design management curriculum including design planning, innovation management, product innovation, circular economy, and more in beautiful central Switzerland near the Swiss Alps.

As cities, industries, and businesses implement green strategy, there is an increasing need for professionals trained in sustainability. A 2014 survey by McKinsey Global reports that the number of companies aligning sustainability with their mission has more than doubled since 2010, with 43 percent of all companies emphasizing the role of sustainability. Archinect published an article in 2019, 9 Featured Job Opportunities in Sustainable Design including project architects, designers, sustainability specialists, sustainability analysts, and project managers. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Labor states that job openings for ‘Sustainability Specialists’ and other ‘Green Economy’ occupations are expected to grow rapidly in the next several years. Graduates of this program will enter jobs in design firms, planning agencies, industry, government, the nonprofit sector, and public policy institutes.

Sustainable Design Poster Competition Winning Entries 2020–21

FAA SUMMER INTENSIVE At this one-week, project based program for high school students, you will become part of a creative community. Through FAA Summer Intensive you can choose the Environmental Arts Track which is a combination of Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Sustainable Design, and Urban Planning. The FAA Summer Intensive provides a perfect platform for high school students who want to get a taste of life as a college student and learn about careers in design.

Discover FAA High School Talent Competition: High school students compete for scholarships to FAA Summer Intensive or scholarships to attend the University of Illinois.

Competition Outline: Design a poster that helps the public visualize, understand, and imagine what a Green New Deal could accomplish. The Green New Deal is a set of legislative proposals, inspired by the Depression-era New Deal, that would help curb the effects of climate change and transform the U.S. economy and infrastructure. Artists, through the Works Progress Administration (WPA), were critical to publicizing the New Deal. Similarly, designers can play a critical role in the Green New Deal.
