The Donald E. Bergeson Energy and Environmentally Sensitive Award was endowed in the memory of Professor Donald E. Bergeson, an architect and teacher of mechanical and solar systems at Illinois. A registered professional architect, he was a pioneer in the use of computers in the practice and teaching of architecture. His passion for computers and technology led him to teaching. This award is dedicated to Professor Bergeson’s belief in the importance of architectural technology and his willingness to help his students explore new avenues in the profession of architecture. This award is given in conjunction with the Green Rescheme and Design Competition, taking students’ design studio projects and judging them on the integration of sustainable design and techniques.

The A. Richard Williams Archon Prize was established by, and continues to honor, Dick Williams (BARCH 1936). Professor Williams taught at ISoA from 1946 until his retirement in 1970. The Charles Clemens Councell Memorial Fund in Architecture was established in memory of Mr. Councell (BSAE 1922). Mr. Councell was an architectural engineer with the United States government in Washington, DC, where he designed many federal buildings and participated in the 1949–52 renovation of the White House. After retirement, Mr. Councell spent two years touring Europe and upon return, published a book of his architectural sketches. This fund helps to underwrite the cost of study for students accepted to the Study Abroad Program in Architecture.

The Raymond A. Pigozzi Memorial Award was established by his family and the OWP/P Foundation in memory of Mr. Pigozzi. Raymond Pigozzi (B.Arch 1951) was a founding partner of O’Donnell, Wicklund, Pigozzi & Peterson (OWP/P) in Chicago, which is now CannonDesign. Mr. Pigozzi’s professional career was devoted to educational architecture. He was appointed a Fellow in the AIA in 1982. This award is given to students who will be participating in international studies programs.

It is awarded to graduates of the school based on their professional development since receiving an architectural degree.

The endowed Robert Jackson Young Scholarship in Architecture was established in honor of the late Robert Jackson Young (BSAS ’66) by his wife Hyacinth and his daughter Elizabeth. An avid Illini alum, he became an Associate Professor in the College of Architecture, Georgia Institute of Technology and later an architect for Georgia-Pacific. He loved to travel to Europe where he would give his family impromptu structural architecture lessons about flying buttresses, bridges, and especially the Pont du Gard. This fund aims to honor Young’s legacy by supporting students participating in residential study abroad programs with the Illinois School of Architecture, allowing them to broaden their academic horizons and immerse themselves in diverse cultural experiences.

The Fred E. and Thomas Berger Memorial Scholarship (BSAS 1913) was initially established following his death in 1973. Following the death of his son, Thomas Berger (BSAS 1940) three years later, the Berger family increased the endowment to be called the Fred E. and Thomas E. Berger Scholarship. Fred Berger established the Champaign, Illinois firm of Berger-Kelley and Associates in 1924. The scholarship is awarded to a deserving graduate student.
The FGM ARCHITECTS Scholarship is an annual scholarship that includes an opportunity for an interview and a possible internship with the firm. This award is available to a student who is entering the M.Arch Program at the School of Architecture. It is merit-based and represents FGM ARCHITECTS in their corporate mission to be recognized as a “professional service firm with an emphasis on service."

Hnatiw Architectural Scholarship provides annual tuition assistance to a selected out-of-state architecture student who has demonstrated exceptional academic merit. Once awarded, the scholarship is assigned to the selected candidate for the expected duration of their current architectural studies.

The Art Kaha Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the career of Arthur Lyon Kaha Jr. (B.Arch 1966, M.Arch 1974). Art Kaha taught and mentored generations of Illinois Architecture students as Associate Director of Undergraduate Affairs. The scholarship is awarded to a student transferring into the School of Architecture curriculum from within the University of Illinois or from another institution of higher education.

Dual degree graduate, Dongqin Feng (M.Arch, MSCE 1999) appreciated Dr. Kim and his teaching so much that she generously established this tribute to support a student in the School of Architecture. Ms. Feng works as a chief designer at the office of Jiaming Investment, a company that has developed Jiaming Center, a LEED ES Platinum office building, the first building in Asia to be nominated for a TOBY award.

The Leathers Family Scholarship was established by Steven (BSAS 2003, MBA/M.Arch 2005) and Angela Leathers in 2019. The scholarship supports undergraduate students in the School of Architecture.
BRUCE E. LILJEROS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Bruce E. Liljeros Memorial Scholarship was established by Bruce’s sister, Britt Zeller, in 2010 to honor his memory. Mr. Liljeros (BSAS 1965) joined the firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in Chicago. He contributed to the Air Force Academy Chapel in Colorado Springs as well as the Water Tower Complex in Chicago. Mr. Liljeros did have his own architectural firm at one time in his career, and he also worked for CRS Group in Houston, where he worked on several international projects in Europe and the Middle East.

The endowed Chester V. Long Scholarship was established by the family of Chester V. Long (BSAE 1928). Scholarships support an undergraduate architecture student who has demonstrated exceptional academic merit and talent in the interrelationship between architectural design and art.

The Wesley Porter Martin Scholarship provides support to students enrolled in the School of Architecture. Mr. Martin (BSAE 1922) was an Ensign in the U.S. Navy upon graduation and settled in Indianapolis where he joined the Architectural Division of Eli Lilly & Company. Throughout his life he participated in firm and private practice where he specialized in “contemporary-rustic” design for new homes, retreats, and remodels.

The William Henry Meyer Scholarship was established in 2021 by alumnus William H. Meyer to be awarded to two student recipients each year. William received his Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies in 1958. Recipients of the William Henry Meyer Scholarship are selected each year by the Illinois School of Architecture.

RATIO Architects LLC, whose partners and principals include Illinois alumni, has its headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana. RATIO has won peer and industry recognition with many awards and is involved with multidisciplinary projects around the country.

Victor Reigner served as an associate professor at the University of Illinois School of Architecture between 1980–83 before joining the faculty at the University of Southern California, where he currently holds a joint professorship between their School of Architecture and the Leonard Davis School of Gerontology. Established in 2019, the Victor A. Reigner FAIA Scholarship provides financial support to students pursuing their Master in Architecture and studying design.

The John M. Ruffner Scholarship was established with a gift from the estate of alumnus John M. Ruffner (BSAS 1955) and Lois W. Ruffner. John served as president of the Washington D.C. chapter of the American Institute of Architects in 1977. As an architect in Arlington, VA, he served as vice president of the Arlington Housing Corp. and president of the Westover Housing Association, both nonprofit rehabilitators of lowincome housing. The fund provides scholarships for students enrolled in the School of Architecture.

Named for alumnus Gordon P. Scholz (M.Arch and MUP 1971), the Excellence in Architecture Scholarship supports graduate students that are in good academic standing. Recipients are selected based on academic merit. Emeritus Professor Scholz has served the College of Architecture at the University of Nebraska for over 46 years. He has also established a scholarship to support students in the Department of Regional and Urban Planning at Illinois.

Established by Donald (BSAS 1954) and Marilyn Turner in 2008, the Donald A. and Marilyn A. Turner Scholarship Fund provides scholarships to undergraduate students enrolled in the School of Architecture. Donald received his bachelor’s degree in architectural studies in 1954 and went on to establish the Turner-Witt and Associates architectural firm in Kankakee, Illinois.
