Project 1

SNIPPETS DESIGN First Snippet I started looking at quotes and song lyrics and came to this one quote “ When writing the story of your life, don’t let anyone else hold the pen “. I loved it and began sketching. I purposely sketched the hands differently to give a meaning of one’s life is written not by the person himself but also many others around him throughout his life. Or can also give the audience a meaning of not letting others to write your story.

Second Snippet On my second snippet. I wanted to do something about our environment. So I decided to hang “image of fake fruits” (drawing of fruits) onto a dead plant to get others to You got to stop watering dead plants.

think about all the things we take from nature for granted until its too late. Not everything can be simply “water” back to life. By the time we begin to look back, there will be nothing left but an “image” of how things used to be.

Third Snippet For my third snippet. Masks saved many lives but it also created a lot of waste during the pandemic. Every destruction has brought some form of new life to this world. Like a wild fire can cause a devastating destruction to a forest and wildlife, but it’s ashes will birth a new and healthier forest. This piece can also symbolize respect and tribute to all the innocent lives and heroes that were lost during this pandemic.

The Destruction That Brings Life

Michael Bierut It was very interesting to read about Michael Bierut’s life and how he became such a famous graphic designer. I can only imagine how difficult it must been for him to learn at that time, when technology are constantly changing. His life and challenges

something that I did not expect an artist need to learn. In real life, art has to be very flexible, for both the client and for yourself as an artist. The more I read, the more I see how humble Beirut is and I think that’s what made him such a successful artist. He continuously

reminded me a lot of my own as well. I believe I first fell in love with art when I used to watch “Art Attack” in elementary school. I then did a lot of art classes and similar to Michael Bierut. I had that same thrilling feeling seeing my art works gets hung up and shown around the school. After reading his interview, I have learned so much more about art that school has never taught me about. Learning to communicate with the client was

spoke about his successes but also not afraid to point out his weaknesses and obstacles that he had to overcome, this showed his imperfection, not just a “born talented”. This would later become his greatest strength as he can realize the wrong and mistakes in order to adopt and create a greater product at the end.

GREAT IDEAS POSTER During the progression of this project, I had switched my quotes and designs for four times. The sketches above were my initial ideas, this was a very difficult project for me, as I kept having an issue with my designs being too literal to the quotes. Then I also encountered problems with my other designs being too difficult for me to do due to my inexperience on using these programs, this really hinder the many ideas I had in my mind.

I settled with the “You can never cross the ocean until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore” quote. It spoke to me to make that “leap forward” and comes out of our comfort zone. After some thoughts, it reminded me of the story about “The frog in the well”. A frog that thinks the well, its home, to be the whole and only world. He thinks that there is nothing out there.

Then I began my process on making the frog in illustrator, I had a lot of run and also ran into many issues. This project has taught me a lot about working with illustrator. I found the coloring was the most difficult part for me, as I only know one way to color an object, I ran into the issue with not knowing how to blend the colors. Overall I think I did pretty well and that it came out the way I pictured my design to be. Although I still believe I could had done better and more details to be added, but I have learned a lot of valuable lessons and experience working with both illustrator and indesign.

Stefan Sagmeister Although this was a very short read but his level of confidence and his approach for ideas are very apparent to his success. I really love when he said “I have found that it is not so helpful to talk about things I have not tried yet. As the act of talking about it removes some of my desire to actually do them”. This really reflected on his work, as we can see in his first work with a card showing him naked.

It was so simple yet quite crazy, it surely will be something that most people will tend to not do if we even think about it. We can see this in his personality as well, the way he looks for good ideas that’s well executed when he hires an intern. This reminds me of how he doesn’t have a conference room for clients, he care more about what’s within than what is on the outside.

CHARACTERS LOGOS

I wanted to create a logo for the main character Matilda, but this idea was later scratched. I could not find much things I can use to design a logo with. Although I could had press onto this idea further but I decided to explore other characters. So, I decided to pick Harry Wormwood as my character. I found him very interesting and more in-depth of a character. Matilda kind of just strike me as a simple hero with a quick tragic story and obtain a super power to “save the day” kind of a character.

Whereas for Harry Wormwood, although his character in

MARK FOX & AARON DRAPLIN It was interesting to learn from Mark on the difference in symbol and trademark, for most people like myself. Has always considered both to be the same thing as logos. However, he explained that all trademarks are symbols but not all symbols can be trademarks. In a way I saw it in reflection to his “fake trademark portfolio”. They were all fake trademarks but they were all still symbols and enough to show the world what he is capable of.

In this video, a designer named Aaron Draplin shared his experience in designing logos. It looked really easy in the video when he used the pathfinder tool. I struggled for a good 30 minutes to figure out how to use it. He honestly explained in such a way that it was easy to understand. I learned the way to make a strong and effective logo is to not be afraid to try new ideas to “expand” that design. This was truly something that I struggled the most on my design process, as my mind was so tangled up on only one idea. So I found this tip very useful and carried it into my final design.
