Reading Reflection #2 by Justyce McClintock
I really enjoyed this reading about design and some of the work done by Stefan Sagmeister looking at this work and I liked how creative they were specially with the neon light sign that was controlled through a bike. I also enjoyed how confident he was throughout the interview. This is a great quality that I aim for when working to become an artist, is a a high level of confidence with a great execution rate. I think thats where I have my most issues is with execution and how to illustrate my thoughts. So this reading really had me thinking when the interviewer asked him what does he look for with people he is looking for an intern, he says “good ideas well executed”. I wish to be just that, an artist that has good ideas and can execute them flawlessly.

Making Logos and Marks Reading/ Mark Fox interview Reflection

In this reading I thought it was interesting how
Mark Fox broke down what exactly a logo was the meaning and significance that makes a logo a logo. I like how in the reading he says to us that logos can be extremely valuable to the public if the company is very popular and can be worth a lot of money but just like the good companies the bad companies can cause a logo to be worthless in value. Reading this article and working on the two logos for class has helped me to understand the process of creating a logo a lot more and I feel confident on working to make my graphic design and logo creating skills even better as I continue.

LOGOS LOGOS LOGOS! by Justyce McClintock
Lydia Deetz: For this logo I wanted to take advantage of mixing her actual appearance for the logo. In the movie Lydia is usually shown wearing some form of hat, she is also shown to have pointy/spikey bangs. I wanted to combine the two and create a loco that could be easily distinguished that is was her. As far as color I used the critiques in class to change the solid black hat to a solid red had that represents her dress in the movies.
Beetlejuice/Betelgeuse: For this logo I wanted to create meaning out of something that isn’t particularly shown in the movie. In the movie Betelgeuse he is portrayed with a dirty/grungy appearance and an extremely over the top and wild/annoying personality to the other characters in the movie. So, I decided to use a fly with hair who is given the representation of something that is gross and dirty but also annoying to us by either flying around our heads or landing on things we don’t want them to. As far as the colors, I chose to keep with black and white but also use the color brown to signify dirty things a fly would land on.

Reflection to Arron Draplin Youtube Challenge Video

Arron Draplin, Graphic Designer from northern Michigan
In this video, Aaron Draplin goes into detail the steps into creating a logo. Not only that but he does a wonderful job with giving us a few tips and tricks on the process of actually conceptualizing and actually putting pencil to paper for the logo. After watching this video, I have been given even more motivation on actually getting my feet wet in this field because I did enjoy the project that was assigned to us to create two logos for movie characters. As I watched this video, I compared my techniques as an amateur to Draplin’s techniques as a professional. I would highly recommend anyone who is interested in graphic design and interested in making logos as a career, because any doubt in my mind that I could not create great work with logos is long gone.

Syntax & Semantics by Justyce McClintock For the Orange Short-Haired cat I get the connotation of a family cat and the movie Garfield (this would be a more positive connotation). However, for the black cat the preserved connotation for that particular breed is of bad luck or scary. The Siamese cats have always reminded me of lady and the tramp and their stereotypic themes that they are involved with royalty. Lastly, the hairless cats also have given me the connotation as royalty since they were worshiped in ancient times.
***I enjoyed this project and even more happy with the thing that I chose it to be about was cats! I chose cats because I feel that different cat breeds/coats carry different emotions and carry different connotations. For this project we were pretty much asked to choose something that is the same but has different varieties in style or kind and basically break down those 4 objects or things and describe their connotative and sematic features.***

Paul Buckley by Justyce McClintock
Paul Buckley reminds me a lot of myself in his thought process. For example, when in the process of creating something for a client he tries to tackle head on what they ask for and if he cannot think of anything concrete, he will submit something as best as he can for a critique. I feel that I would be like that in a professional setting, I could not just not submit anything to a client just because I had a block. I also think that I would work really well under him if I was interested in his work field, this is because when looking for an artist he expects a well-executed portfolio, a risk taker, and someone who is genially a nice person. I agree that a great attitude goes a long way in any direction of work you in, but I think when working in the art industry negative people tend to execute their feelings.

Project 5 - Magazine by Justyce McClintock
In the last project we got the opportunity to compile together all of our project process blogs and all of our reading/video reflections. I think that this project was one of the more fun tasks to do. We were asked to create a magazine spread in a professional manner. I took a more simplistic approach to my magazine. I like how it is minimalist but still flashy at the same time. I overall have really enjoyed this class and the friends I have made in it as well. I think that this class was exactly what I needed to guide me in the right direction of where I would like to end up in life as a career.
