I struggled in the beginning to find inspiration for
this project. It’s automatically more difficult to find inspiration when told to do it. But I found it more simple when I put the assignment to the side and forgot about it. The first sketch was made when I was about to eat Chinese food with my family. I always enjoyed reading fortune cookies because they fascinate me. I never take them serious but it’s something about wisdom from an item of food that was funny to me. Since I don’t usually eat Chinese food I was excited for this cookie and to see what was inside. But when I cracked it, it was empty. It was a fortune-less cookie. What could this mean, did I have no fortune awaiting me. It was pretty thought provoking and gave me the idea for my snippet.

Michael Bierut Reflection I found this interview very interesting and eye opening. From the beginning Bierut caught my attention by mentioning his interest starting with cover art for records. Vinyl collecting is a pretty big hobby of mine and a lot of it comes from the art work. One day I hope to use my skills in photography and art do work with artist to create album covers. When I was a kid, I also didn’t realize there was a creative space in the world for artist and creatives such as graphic design. When he spoke about his greatest strength being a listener, it intrigued me but later made sense. You’re constantly working with people to covey a certain message and they want you to understand exactly what they want. This also goes for his similarities between writing and drawing, finding a structure and the technical abilities. My favorite part of the interview was when asked about his most satisfying work and he said helping make signs for the Transportation system in New York City. Just a simple thing most people don’t even consider helping out on a day to day basis.
Posters First Sketch The quote I decided to use is “The world is a book, and those who do not travel, read only a page”. This quote stuck out to me because of the travel talk. I am somebody who loves to travel but within the past year much like everyone else, have not been able to. In my first sketch I decided to take a very literal route. Drawing the earth inside a book with someone exploring the page. I liked it at first but it seemed pretty dated the more I looked at it. Personally when deciding places I want to travel to it’s through YouTube vlogs, travel photography, and Google Earth. So I decided to take the pages “literally” but not in the sense most people would think.
Final I decided to make the pages, web pages. This putting the reader directly into the poster. It is suppose to resemble somebody exploring the world through the internet when they could be experience the world themselves in person. I took a long time to come up with this design being completely different from what I started with. But I like this one more because of its personal meaning and aesthetic.

Logos
Matilda Wormwood Starting sketching for Matilda was fairly simple in the beginning. I had a lot of ideas all circulating around books. My first design ended up being the one I decided to stick with for my final logo. All of my designed revolved around books which slowly made me realize a lot of the characters were very one dimensional and seemed like everybody recognized them same things about her. Nevertheless I stuck with the idea. A close favorite of my sketches was her initials flipping the M to be W from the same line. Taking a diamond shape. After some feedback I made the books look more book like instead of picket fences together. After the second critique this is the design we came up with.
Miss Honey Miss Honey was a little more difficult than Matilda when coming up with a sketch. First I really tried sticking with the “honey” in her name but slowly realized that even it wouldn’t make any sense in actually displaying her character. The next most noticeable thing about her was her glasses. So I experimented with typography to somehow make her name out of circles and resemble a pair of glasses. After some failed attempted the idea of outlining her face was with the glasses being the main emphasis came up. After the critique using her signature hairstyle and glasses is what I ended up going with.
Stefan Sagmeister Reflection While reading this section I noticed first that it was a very short passage and most of it was showcasing his work with neon lights. I immediately assume he was just somebody who let his work do most of the talking. I was later reassured with his laster answer that he doesn’t like to talk about things before he tries them. I think this is a bit of advice that I will take for myself with my future work. Things can be extremely difficult or easy and having a preconceived notion about it will not help the process. Overall, I enjoyed this interview and viewing his work.

Draplin Response Watching this video really opened my eyes to the different creative processes when it comes to graphic design. The first thing that surprised me was how fast he created the logo. Understanding where and what the image would be seen on and capitalizing on it. Also the very simplicity of it, it seemed like a very simple design that anyone would come up with. You can tell that he’s been doing this for a while. Another thing that I noticed was the book that he got his inspiration from of older logos and typefaces. He then took this idea and sketched it out, with a small progression in each sketch. All together I really enjoyed watching with video, it opened my eyes to the different ways and styles of graphic design there is and as I continue to work on it, the better I’ll get at it.
