‘Gece Kuşları’sergisi Erdal Aygenç’in 2016 yılında ürettiği çalışmalarından bir seçkiyi kapsıyor. Sıradan sayılabilecek konuları, sade, abartısız bir yaklaşımla ele alan sanatçı, gözün o anda gördüğünü kurgudan uzak, yalın bir dille anlatmayı seçiyor. Aygenç’in derdi ‘dış dünya’ değil, dış dünyadaki varlıkların hayale bürünmüş izlenimleridir. Bilgi, deneyim, sezgi ve gözlemle yarattığı suluboyalarındaki her bir imge, gecenin karanlığında gizemini taşıyan şiirsel bir gösteriye dönüşüyor.

The exhibition ‘Night Birds’ includes a selection of works by Erdal Aygenç, produced in 2016. Handling issues that can be considered ordinary, with a simple, understated approach, the artist chooses to express what the eye sees at that moment with a plain language away from the fiction. Aygenç’s issue is not the ‘external world’ but the impression of the beings of this world wrapped up by the imagination. Each image in the watercolours he has created with knowledge, experience, intuition and observation, turns into a poetical performance carrying its mystery within the darkness of the night.

Mine Okur Mine Okur: Sanatsal yaratım süreciden, sanatınızı etkileyen, sizde birşeyler yaratma dürtüsü uyandıran etmenlerden bahsedebilir misiniz?

Erdal Aygenç: Sanatla uğraşan, sanatsal üretimde bulunan insanların böylesi sorularla en son karşılaşmak isteyebileceklerini düşünüyorum; ya da hiç karşılaşmak istemeyebilirler. Çünkü, sanatsal yaratım süreci çok karmaşık, çok etkenli, çok bilinmeyenli bir durumdur.

O kadar ki, sanatçının kendisi bile bu süreci birebir belleğine not edemez. Eğer bir resim boyuyorsanız, tualin ya da kağıdın üzerine koyduğunuz ilk noktadan sonra plastik biçimlendirmenin hesapları ile boğuşur olursunuz. Kırmızının yanına niye yeşili koyduğunuzu nasıl anlatacaksınız? Kırmızı ister ise yeşili koyarsınız... O esnada dışarıdan gelen şiddetli bir fren çığlığının, dinlediğiniz müzik nağmelerinin, bozuk musluktan şıp şıp damlayarak kulağınızı tırmalayan su sesinin, ansızın çalan telefon ya da kapı zilinin, mide gurultunuzun, baş ağrınızın, öncesinde yaşadığınız bir tartışma, kavga, ayrılık, sevinç ya da mutluluğun, arzularınızın, isteklerinizin, özlemlerinizin, bilinçaltınızdan olur olmadık fışkıran tüm şeylerin... fırça vuruşunuzu, çizgi çizişinizi ne denli etkilediğini bilemezsiniz; böyle bir şeyin peşinde de olmazsınız. Bunu sonradan anlatmak zordur, hatta olanaksızdır.

Zorunlu kaldığım anlarda benim de anlattığım olmuştur; ancak dönüp baktığımda ‘acaba’ demekten de kendimi alamamışımdır. Ürün ortaya çıktıktan ve alıcısı ile buluştuktan sonra üzerine mutlaka çok şeyler söylenebilir. Ama, sanatçı artık ‘çalışma’sını bitirmiştir. Sonrası, konu ile değişik biçim ve içerikte (sanat tarihi, sanat psikolojisi, estetik, sanat felsefesi gibi) ilgisi olanların işidir.

Konu, tema, genel yaklaşım, hareket ya da başlangıç noktası ile bağıntılı şeyler söylenebilir.

Yaratıcı bireyin çevresinde bulunan canlı-cansız her nesne, durum, olgu, olay vs. onun sanatsal üretimi için bir bahanedir. Tüm bunlara sanatçının bakışı, algılayışı ve yorumlayışı da diğer insanlardan farklıdır.

Her gün birlikte olduğumuz, birlikte yaşadığımız, çoğu zaman farkında 7

olmadığımız, algımızın dışında kalan şeyler bir sanat yaratıcısı için başlangıç ‘nokta’sı olabilir ve sanatsal serüven o ‘nokta’ ya da ‘bahane’ etrafında -kendi doğası ve örgüsü içerisinde- biçimlenir. Dış dünyadan aldıkları ve kendi içinde biriktirdiği şeyler (her türlü duygu, her türlü düşünce, her türlü yaşanmışlık ve bilgi) sanatçıların beslenme kaynaklarıdır. Sanatsal kimliğin ortaya çıkışına etki eden tüm etmenleri sıralamak istemiyorum.

Mine Okur: Neden kuş? Bu fikir nasıl ortaya çıktı acaba?

Erdal Aygenç: Bu soruyu iki şekilde yanıtlayabilirim. Hacettepe Üniversitesinde görevli iken Biyoloji Bölümünden dondurulmuş kuşlar getirilmişti öğrencilerin çalışmaları için... ‘Bahane’ orta yerde duruyordu. Kalın fırçalarla, lavi tekniği ile ve karakalem büyük-küçük boyutlu yüzeylere çizdim, boyadım... Daha sonra renkli de çalıştım...

Dondurulmuş olmaları insanı bir ölçüde iğreti etse de, keyifli bir çalışma süreci idi. Bu çalışmalarla bir sergi de açtım. Sergi ile ilgili yapılan yayınlarda görülecektir ki, kuş çizme nedenini yetiştiğim çevre vs. ile ilişkilendirmişim. Bunu şimdi düşündüğümde ‘kimbilir’ diye düşünüyorum... Yani, öyle bir dürtü yoktu başlangıçta... Dondurulmuş kuş figürleri öylece bekliyordu çizilmek, boyanmak için... Çize, boyaya bir zaman sonra o biçimde yetkinleştiğinizi, bileğinizin kıvraklaştığını, formu kavrayıp ona egemen olduğunuzu hissediyorsunuz... Önünüzde izlenim alacağınız nesne durmasa da onu istediğiniz biçimlerde resmedebiliyorsunuz... Yeni kuşlar yaratabilir duruma geliyorsunuz...

Kuş sonsuz, sınırsız bahanelerden biri... En küçüğünden en büyüğüne, en sevimlisinden en yırtıcısına... Kanatlarını açmış süzülen heybetli kartaldan, şahinden, kuzgundan, atmacadan pencere önünde yemlenen serçeye kadar bildiğimiz-bilmediğimiz çok türü var... Form olarak etkili, cezbedici... Leke olarak etkileyici... Kuş gibi özgür uçmanın insan üzerindeki etkilerinden vs. söz etmek, konunun etrafını süslü cümlelerle doldurmak da mümkün... Ama işin özü şu ki, ‘bahane’ orta yerde duruyordu. İkinci yanıt çok daha kesin ve net: Sayın Ioanna Kuçuradi, Felsefe Derneğinin bir kitap serisi için benden kuş-simurg figürleri istedi; bir başka deyişle ‘sipariş’ edildi. resmettiğimi biliyordu. Grafik tasarım alanında kuş talep edildiğinde kaplumbağa çizeceğim diyemezsiniz... Sonuçta, kitaplarda kullanılacak biçimde kuş-simurg figürleri oluşturdum.

Mine Okur: Can you tell us about the artistic creation process, about the factors that influence your art and evoke in you the urge to create something?

Erdal Aygenç: I think the last thing the people who are in artistic production, or who deals with art, would want is to come across such questions, or possibly they never want to come across. Because the artistic creation process is a very complicated, multifactorial situation with many unknowns. So much so that even the artist himself cannot one-to-one note this process to his memory. If you are painting, after the first brush you put on canvas or paper you start struggling with the estimations of the plastic forming. How would you explain why you have put green next to the red? If the red demands it then you put the green… Maybe because of a severe brake- screech coming from outside or the tunes of the music you are listening to, the sound of water dripping from the broken faucet scratching your ear, the sudden, unexpected ringing of the telephone or the doorbell, the rumbling of your stomach or your headache, an argument you have had before, a fight, a separation, joy or happiness, your desires, wishes, longings, all those things gushing out of your subconsciousness…you can never know what sort of influence all these things have on your brushing or drawing; you cannot be bothered by measuring this. This is something very difficult to explain later, even impossible. I tried to explain if I had to, but when I looked back I couldn’t help wondering how it would be if I had said it differently. After the product emerges and meets with the audience, for sure many things can be said about it. But for the artist, his ‘work’ is over. The rest is the concern of people who deal with the subject under different formats and contents (like art history, art psychology, aesthetics, art philosophy, etc.).

But still, certain things can be said relating to the subject, theme, general approach or the starting point.

Every animate and inanimate object, case, fact, event, etc. surrounding the creative individual is an excuse for his artistic production. The approach, perception and interpretation of all these by the artist is different from other people. For someone who creates art, things that surround us, things that we live with together, that most of the time we are not aware of, or they are left outside of our perception, could be a starting ‘point’ and the artistic adventure can be shaped –within its own nature and texture of course – around that ‘point’ or ‘excuse’. Things that s/he receives from the external world and that s/he accumulates inside (all sorts of emotions, all sorts of ideas, experiences and information of all kinds) are the source of feeding for the artists. I do not want to enumerate all the factors that influence the emergence of artistic identity.

Mine Okur: Why bird? How did this idea emerge?

Erdal Aygenç: I can answer this question in two ways. When I was lecturing at Hacettepe University, frozen birds were brought from the Department of Biology for the students to work on them… The ‘excuse’ was right there. Using thick brushes, the Lavi technique and pencil, I drew and painted on big and small surfaces... Later I worked with colours as well… Although to some extent their being frozen was disturbing, it was a pleasant working process. I even opened an exhibition with those works. You can see in the publications related to the exhibition that I have associated the reason of my drawing birds with the environment in which I was raised. When I consider this now, I say to myself, ‘who knows/may be’… I mean, initially there wasn’t an urge like this... The frozen bird figures were waiting to be drawn or painted… As you draw and paint, you start feeling that you are perfecting your style, your wrist becomes lither, you begin to comprehend and internalise the form, you begin to take over… After a while, even if the object of impression is not there anymore, you become able to draw/paint it as you like… You reach a state that you can even create new birds... Bird is just one of the endless, limitless excuses… From the smallest one to the biggest one, from the cutest to the raptor…From the majestic eagle soaring with its wings extended, the falcon, the raven, the sparrow hawk to the sparrow feeding in front of the window, there are many types of birds that we know or we don’t know… As a form they are effective, 11

attractive... As stain, impressive... It is also possible to go around the subject with ornate sentences by talking about the influences on us of flying free like a bird, and the like… But the essence of the work was that the ‘excuse’ was right there…

The second answer is much more precise and clear: Mrs Ioanna Kuçuradi, requested bird-simurg figures from me for a series of books for the Philosophical Society; in other words, they were ‘ordered’. Dearest Mrs Ioanna, she knew that I was painting birds. In the graphic design field, when they demand birds you cannot say I will draw turtles… Ultimately, I produced bird-simurg figures to be used in the books.

Erdal Aygenç 5 Haziran 1959’da Hopa’da doğdu. İlk ve Orta Öğrenimini Hopa’da, Lisans Eğitimini Gazi Üniversitesi, Gazi Eğitim Fakültesi Resim-İş Eğitimi Bölümün’de tamamladı.1986 yılında Yüksek Lisans, 1992 yılında Doktora/Sanatta Yeterlik derecelerini kazandığı Hacettepe Üniversitesi, Güzel Sanatlar Fakültesi Grafik Bölümün’de 1985-2006 yılları arasında sırası ile Araştırma Görevlisi, Öğretim Görevlisi ve Yardımcı Doçent olarak çalıştı; idari görevlerde bulundu, akademik kurullarda ve komisyonlarda görev yaptı. Çok sayıda Yüksek Lisans ve Doktora/ Sanatta Yeterlik tez danışmanlığı yürüttü; seçici kurul üyeliğinde bulundu.Sanat ve tasarım alanlarında makaleleri yayımlandı, sempozyumlarda bildiriler sundu, konferanslar verdi, oturumlar yürüttü, projelerde yer aldı, workshop çalışmaları gerçekleştirdi. Açtığı üç kişisel serginin yanı sıra çok sayıda ulusal ve uluslararası sergiye katıldı. Üç uluslararası, bir ulusal yarışmada ödül kazandı. Yapıtları yurtiçi ve yurtdışı koleksiyonlarda yer aldı. Akademik yaşamına 2006 yılından itibaren Yakın Doğu Üniversitesi, Güzel Sanatlar ve Tasarım Fakültesin’de Öğretim Üyesi olarak devam ediyor.

He was born in Hopa in 1959. He completed his primary and high school education in Hopa, undergraduate in the Department of Painting of Faculty of Education in Gazi University. He finished his Master Degree in 1986 and Proficiency in Art (Doctorate) in the Department of Graphic Design of Faculty of Fine Arts, Hacettepe University in 1992. He worked as a Research Assistant, Lecturer and Assistant Professor in the same department. He also worked on some administrative duties, academic boards and commissions.

He consulted a large number of Master’s and Doctoral / Proficiency thesis and served as a member of Selection Committee. He published many articles in the subject of Art and Design, presented papers in some symposiums, conducted the sessions, took part in the projects and the artistic workshops.

He conducted three personal exhibitions as well as participated many national and international exhibitions. He won some prizes in one national and three international competitions. His works of art have been exhibited in some local and abroad collections. He has continued his academic career as a Lecturer in the Department of Graphic Design of Faculty of Arts and Design, Near East University since 2006.
