Sanatı seviyorum ve kitapları seviyorum. Aynı zamanda, bulabildiğimde, yerleri de seviyorum. Müze ve kütüphaneler dünya içerisinde benim için sıra dışı yerler. Oralarda bir süreliğine de olsa günlük telaşlı hayat rutinimin dışına çıkıp şehrin çılgınlığını unutabiliyorum. Kütüphane ve müze arasında çeşitli paralellikler var, çünkü ikisi de özel bir karakteristik yapı ile nitelendirilmektedir. Kamu kurumu olarak düşünülseler de nasıl kullanılacakları ve içlerinde nasıl davranılacağına dair belirli kurallara sahip özel alanlardır. Ziyaretçileri yüksek sesle konuşamaz, gürültü yapamaz, yemek yiyemez, koşamaz veya insanları rahatsız edebilecek herhangi bir şey yapamazlar. Oradaki zamanınız süresince sessizliğin ve derin bir düşüncenin gerektiği entelektüel ve ruhsal bir tecrübeye odaklanırsınız. Bu nedenle müze ve kütüphaneler kültürün hiperuzaylarıdır. Kültür denilen sosyal sistemin üyeleri için bir buluşma platformu olarak düşünülebilir. Ne zaman bir müzede veya kütüphanede bulunsam, insanların bir sanat eseri karşısında veya ilham verici bir kitabın sayfaları arasında meditasyon yaptığı kutsal bir yerdeymiş gibi hissederim. Galeriler ve kitapçılar da benzer bir tavrı ve estetiği kurmaya çalışır, fakat buna sanat eserleri ile kitapların reklamını yapmak ve satmak amacı eklenir. Bir bakımdan, ruhsal, entelektüel ve kapitalist çıkarları bir araya getirirler.

Doğal olarak, Massimo Giannoni’nin eserleri ilk gördüğüm anda ilgimi çekmişti. İlgimi çeken yalnızca favori mekanlarımın tasviri değildi. Güçlü bir teknik ve estetik sofistikasyon ile sağlanan resimsel güzellikleri ve biçimsel görsellikleri beni etkilemişti. Giannoni’nin çalışmalarındaki kavramsal çerçeve ve bağlamsal boyut da büyüleyicidir. I love art and I love books. I also love the spaces, where I can find them. The museum and the library are exceptional places for me in this world. There, at least for a while, I can step out of my hectic everyday life routine, and forget the craziness of the city. Various parallels exist between the library and the museum, because both are characterized by an exclusive character. Although considered public institutions, they are special spaces with distinct rules of how to use them, and how to behave in them. Their visitors do not speak loudly, do not make noises, eat, run or do anything that could annoy anyone. During your time there, you concentrate on an intellectual and spiritual experience for which silence and contemplation are needed. That is why the museum and the library are hyperspaces of culture. They can be understood as a meeting platform for the members of the social system called culture. Whenever I am in a museum or library, its feels like being in a holy place, where people meditate in front of an artwork or in-between the pages of an inspiring book. The gallery and the book store try to establish a similar attitude and aesthetic while adding the aim to promote and to sell artworks and books. In a way, they combine spiritual, intellectual and capitalist interests.

Obviously, I was immediately attracted by the work of Massimo Giannoni the moment I first saw it. Not only the depiction of my favorite spaces drew my attention, but especially their painterly beauty and formal visuality, caused by strong technical and aesthetical sophistication, impressed me. The conceptual frame and the contentual dimension of Giannoni’s work are fascinating as well. Although never being representative, his paintings give the spectator the chance to virtually enter book stores, libraries, and stock exchanges or stroll through cities, piazzas and landscapes. Bet7

Konunun önemi ikincil derecede kalır, zira eserleri resim sanatına dair yaptığı incelemelerin bir sonucudur. Bu kulağa biçimci soyut bir ressamın yaklaşımı gibi gelmektedir. Realizm, ekspresyonizm ve soyutlama arasında değişim gösteren figüratif bir tarz geliştirirken, Massimo Giannoni figürasyon konuları ile biçimcilik ve soyutlamanın temsilini bir araya getirmeyi başarır. Bu onun eserlerini harika hale getiren mükemmel başarılardan biridir. Tabii ki ressam tasvir edilmiş mekanları sevmektedir, çünkü yirmi yılı aşkın süredir kitapçıları ve kütüphaneleri resmetmektedir. Yine de, onların enerjilerine hayran kalmakta ve sayısız hikayeyle çevrili olma fikrini sevmektedir. Bununla beraber, bir ressam olarak, bu mekanlar onu görsel ve estetik duygu bakımından daha fazla etkilemektedir. Bu nedenle bütün yapıtlarında gerçeklik ve resim ile alakalı konular arasında ilginç bir diyalektik mevcuttur. Özellikle bu diyalektiğin Massimo Giannoni’nin resimlerini bu kadar çekici hale getirdiğini düşünmekteyim.

Eserleri her zaman gerçek yerlerde çektiği fotoğrafları temel almaktadır. Bununla birlikte, ressam görüntüleri kopyalamaz, bunları resimlerinin taslakları olarak kullanır. Sonunda, renkleri, dokuları ve mimari detayları değiştirdikten sonra bu mekanların kişisel versiyonlarını resmeder. Kitapçı ve kütüphane resimlerine dikkatli bir şekilde bakıldığında içlerinin anonim hale getirildiği fark edilebilir, çünkü Giannoni kitaplardan tüm başlıkları ve detayları siler. Sonuç olarak da, nadiren fırça kullandığı için, resimleri yoğun bir kalın boya ağı ve göze çarpan spatula izleri ortaya çıkaran sayısız renkli bloktan oluşur. Massimo Gionnoni’nin eserleri oldukça detaylıdır ve mimari detayların yanı sıra, kitaplar, raflar ve sandalyeler gibi sayısız elementten meydana gelir. Her bir elementle sanki o da kendi başına küçük bir resimmiş gibi ayrı ayrı ilgilenir. Böylece ortaya çıkan eser pek çok

ween the thick paint of the multilayered works, he can find peaceful spaces outside the harshness of life. The pieces never illustrate reality. Quite the opposite is the case. They constitute their own painterly reality, as Giannoni is mostly concerned with the physical constitution and being of the work. The topic is rather of secondary importance, as the pieces are the result of his investigation of the art of painting. This sounds rather like the approach of a formalist abstract painter.

While developing a figurative style, which shifts between realism, expressionism and abstraction, Massimo Giannoni manages to combine matters of figuration and representation with formalism and abstraction. This is one of the astonishing achievements that make his work outstanding. Of course, the artist loves the depicted spaces, as he paints book stores and libraries for over twenty years. Still, he is fascinated by their energy, and he loves the idea of being surrounded by countless stories. Nevertheless, as a painter, they interest him more in a visual and aesthetic sense. This is the reason why in his oeuvre an interesting dialectic exists between matters related to reality and to painting. I believe that especially this dialectic makes the paintings of Massimo Giannoni so appealing.

His pieces are always based on photos that he has taken of actual spaces. Nevertheless, the artist does not copy the images, but uses them as drafts for his paintings. In the end, after changing colors, textures and architectural details, he constructs his personal versions of these spaces. Looking carefully at the paintings of the book stores and libraries, one realizes that the interiors become anonymous, as Giannoni erases

küçük resim içerir. Uzaktan bakıldığında, tasvir edilen görüntü, örneğin bir iç mekan, ön plandadır. Resimlere yaklaştıkça çeşitli bölümler ve elementlerin münferit güzellikleri ortaya çıkmaya başlar. Bu bağlamda, çalışmaları ve renk alanı resmi, hatta soyut ekspresyonizm arasında bile resimsel bir bağlantı ortaya çıkar. Çalışmalarının güçlü görsel etkisi bakımından oldukça önemli olan macun gibi dokunun yanı sıra, Giannoni aynı zamanda resimlerinin kısımlarını sıklıkla boş bırakır, böylece tuvalin orijinal kahverengimsi rengi gözükür. Bu şekilde çeşitli fiziksel yapıların karmaşık dokusu resimlerinde verilir, macun gibi ve ağır bölümlerin ince katmanlı renklere sahip ve boyanmamış kısımlarla bir araya getirilmesinin kompozisyon içinde hoş bir ritim ortaya çıkardığını düşünmekteyim. Ressam resimsel maksimalizm ve minimalizmin yanı sıra dinamik ve statiği de ustalıkla dengeler.

Biçimci soyut sanatın estetik konularının figüratif resme entegre edilmesi oldukça olağandışıdır. Massimo Giannoni görsel ve entelektüel gücünü içinde yaşadığımız gerçekliğin değerlendirilmesinin yanında, resim sanatına dair tartışmadan alan güzel, güçlü ve anlamlı eserler yaratmak için resimdeki biçimci ve bağlamsal ilgilerini bir araya getirmeye başarır. Bir bakımdan, resim konusunu ve figüratif eserlerdeki resim varlığını tartışan soyut bir ressam gibi davranır. Bu paradoks yapıtlarına münferit bir karakter sağlar. İzleyiciye bir zamanlar sabit ve kesin olarak düşünülen sanat ve gerçeklik fikirlerini yeniden düşünmeleri için bir şans verir.

all titles and details from the books. In the end, the paintings consist of countless colorful blocks, which build an intensive grid of thick paint and remarkable traces of the spatula, as he rarely uses a brush. The work with the spatula increases the physical aspect of the paintings, as, in contrast to a brush, he can put thick layers of paint on top of each other just like the bricklayer uses his trowel to build walls.

Massimo Gionnoni’s works are highly detailed, and consist of numerous elements like books, shelves, chairs, as well as architectural details. He treats each element individually, as if it was a small painting of its own. So, the final piece consists of many small paintings. From a distance, the depicted image e.g. of an interior space is in the foreground. The closer you get to the paintings, the more the various sections and elements start to reveal their individual beauty. In this context, a painterly connection between his work, color field painting, and even abstract expressionism occurs.

Besides paste-like textures, which are highly important for the strong visual impact of the works, Giannoni also often leaves parts of the painting empty, so that the original brownish color of the canvas appears. So, a complex texture of various physical constitutions is given in the paintings, and I believe that this combination of paste-like and heavy sections with thin layers of colors and unpainted parts creates a nice rhythm within the composition. The artist masterly balances dynamic and static as well as painterly maximalism and minimalism.

It is very unusual that aesthetical matters of formalist abstract art get integrated in a figurative painting.

Massimo Giannoni manages to combine formal and contentual interests in painting for creating beautiful, powerful and meaningful pieces that draw their visual and intellectual strength from the discussion of the art of painting as well as from the review of the reality we live in. In a way, he acts like an abstract painter, who discusses the matter of paint and the being of painting in figurative pieces. This paradox gives his oeuvre an individual character. It gives the spectator the chance to reconsider views on art and reality that once were considered fixed and settled.

Marcus Graf: Sayın Mrs. Giannoni, bu Türkiye’deki ilk solo gösteriniz. İstanbul’da sizinle, güzel çalışmalarınıza tanık olmaktan memnuniyet duyuyoruz. Çalışmanızın estetiği ve içeriğini tasavvuf etmek için, lütfen ilgilendiğiniz temel biçimsel ve kavramsal konulardan bahseder misiniz?

Massimo Giannoni: Resimlerimdeki temel kaygı, madde ve figüratif betimleme arasındaki eşzamanlılıktır. Bunların ikisi de bazı temel noktalarıyla özerk elemanlardır, diğer bir deyişle, nesneleri aynı zamanda temsil ettiği şeyi oluştururken sanki temsil ettiği şeyden bağımsız bir şeymiş gibi yerleştiriyorum.

Kitapçılara ve Borsaya olan ilgime gelince, patlamaya hazır ve etrafımda ciltlerde kuşatılmış hikâyelerin çoğu tarafından kuşatılmış hissettiğim kitapçılarda ve kütüphanelerde zaman geçirmeyi ne kadar sevdiğimi anlatamam. Bu iki konu arasındaki fark, bilginin iki farklı türüne dayanmaktadır: birisi optik fiberler boyunca hızla hareket eder ve aydınlık LED ışıkları üzerinde maddeleşir, diğeri statik, güven verici, raflarda bulunan ve yalnızca kitap omurgasının rengi tarafından tanımlanabilir.

Graf: Bir kitapçı ve borsa, farklı insan davranışlarının verildiği oldukça farklı yerlerdir. Eserlerinizdeki her iki konuya da bakarken, sizin resim ve kavramsal ilginizin ne olduğunu daima merak ediyorum. Yani konuyu, sunduğundan bağımsız bir şekilde ele aldığınızda kitapçıda ya da borsada daha resmi hatta biçimci bir ilginiz olduğu anlamına mı geliyor?

Giannoni: Eğer bir psikolojik iç gözlem resmi yapmak istiyorsanız, farklı sembollü çizime ve resim yapısına bağlı olan daha beyinsel ve sembolik bir dünya anlatmalısınız. Bu, Freud’dan sonra 19. yüzyılın başlarında sembolistlerin, Avusturya ayrılmasının çeşit-

Marcus Graf: Dear Mrs. Giannoni, this is your first solo show in Turkey. We are glad to see you and your fine work here in Istanbul. In order to mediate the aesthetic and content of your work could you please point out the main formal and conceptual issues that you are interested in.

Massimo Giannoni: The main concern in my paintings are the synchronicity between objects and represantation of the figures. Both of the two are concessional elements with some points of contact.

In other words, I insert objects in my paintings as if they were independent from what it represented and at the same time it constructs what it represents.

Also for my interest in bookstores and Stock Exchanges; I cannot tell you how much I love spending time in bookstores and libraries where I feel surrounded by a plenty of stories attached in the volumes around me and ready to explode… The difference between these two subjects are always based on two different types of information: one moving quickly along optical fibers and to become material in bright LED lights and the other one is stable, reassures a location on shelves and identifiable only by the color of the book spine.

Graf: A book store and a stock exchange are very different places, where different human acting is given. While looking at both topics in your oeuvre I was always wondering about your painterly or conceptual interest. So, when you treat matter as if it is independent from what it represents, does this mean that you have a rather formal or even formalist interest in the bookstore and the stock?

Giannoni: You should tell a symbolic world, more cerebral, attached to drawing and to the image con11

Ben bir alanın sembolojisinden etkileniyorum, kütüphaneler sağlam ve güçlü, enerji dolu. Bu nedenle onlar benim ressamlık yolumu otomatik olarak etkiliyorlar. Bir sanatçının resminde pek çok şey anlatma konusunda ısrarlı olması durumunda, fazlasıyla yapay olan bir şey inşa etme riski olduğunu düşünüyorum. Ben resim uygulamalarıma odaklanmayı tercih ederim. The reason why I am interested in an extremely dry painting is that I have two lines in the way I paint.

There is the Stock Exchange, with unreadable figure because they go to fast, they have many things to think. By the time they loose their human essences and become only a band,back clothes and colorful skirts that is the moment when they are reading information passing on a shining led. On the other hand there are the Libraries, where the presence of human being and the symbology that contains inside, are perceivable. In the present of the presentation, we can feel that there was a person and it is not there anymore. We can feel absence and presence of a human both at the same time. Presence is what the history of human being posioned in the shelves – in vertical and horizontal – .

The libraries are strong and powerful, full of energy, I am effected by the symbology of the place and they automatically influence my way of painting. I think that if an artist insists a lot on telling too much about his paintings, then he risks to build something that becames too artificial. I would rather prefer on focusing to my practice of painting. I would like to

focus on the matter of things like “how we do” and not “what we do”; because in the history of art from Ancient to modern art; all of the artists are affected by “how we do” and not by “what we do”. Artists could not decide what to present as subject between 16th18th centuries, which was the period of clerical commitments and the presentation was dedicated by religious. On the other hand, how artists paintings were influenced by their way of paintings.

Graf: Madem, şekil, renk, kompozisyon, boya ya da tuval gibi resmin içsel konularıyla daha çok ilgileniyorsunuz, neden hala “figürasyona” ihtiyaç duyuyorsunuz?

Giannoni: Oldukça akıllı ve sivri bir soru çünkü “neden soyut resim yapmıyorsun” diye sorabilirsiniz. Bunun benim çalışmalarımı soyut bir resim gibi tanımladığını ya da bunu yapmayı düşünsem de bunun indirgeyici olacağı doğrudur. Soyut resimde zaman kavramı benim resim algım için oldukça sınırlı, çünkü bir resim yapmak için benim farklı sıklıklarda çalışmaya ihtiyacım var. Gerçek şu ki, ben çalışma yöntemimde bir geçiş yaptım, çizim ve grid için bir kısım var, ve sonunda figüratif bir nesne üzerinde soyut bir resimle çalışıyorum. Farkı yaratan bu, çünkü aynı zamanda özellikle kompozisyonumda sunulan o nesne için boyamanın etkisi var. Daha önce suluboyayla yaptığım soyutlayıcı kompozisyonlardan farklı olarak, kütüphanelerde ve Borsada görebileceğiniz figüratif nesneleri seçerek yağ ile boyama yapıyorum. Böylece, bence mevcut ressamlık yolum, suluboyanın hafifliği ve monotonluğundan emsal çalışma dizilerime bir tepki olarak geldi diye düşünüyorum.

Graf: If you are more interested in intrinsic matters of painting like form, colour, composition, paint, or canvas why do you still need “figuration”?

Giannoni: This is such a clever question that has a point because you might ask me “why you do not do abstract painting”. That’s true even if I think that defining my works as abstract painting, or doing it, it will be reductive. The concept of time is too limited in abstract for my perception of painting because in order to build an image I need different frequencies times of studying. The truth is that I have done a transition of my method of work, there is a part for drawing and a part for the grid, at the end I work with an abstract painting on a figurative subject.

There is an effect of painting for that particularly object at the same time represented in my composition and that is the thing makes the difference.

As you can see in the libraries and in the stock exchange, I use oil painting choosing figurative subjects, I was using watercolor doing abstractive compositions before those works. So that I think that my current way of painting arrived as a reaction to my precedent series of works, from the lightness and flatness of watercolor I choose a very material and a figurative painting. Far all this reasons I think to be bound to figurative painting.

Graf: You have several topics that you are interested in. You created landscapes, libraries, book stores, piazzas, and stock exchanges. So, how do you decide on the topics you work with?

Giannoni: So, what makes me choose a subject is coincidence (randomness) for several times. For example it happened while I was creating that was

Tüm bunlardan ayrı olarak, figüratif resme bağlanacağımı düşünüyorum.

Graf: İlgilendiğiniz çeşitli konular var. Manzaralar, kütüphaneler, kitapçılar, taraçalar ve borsalar yaratıyorsunuz. Peki, üzerinde çalışacağınız konuya nasıl karar veriyorsunuz?

Giannoni: Yani, bana çeşitli zamanlarda bir konu seçtiren şey aslında tesadüf(rastgele). Graf: Resimlerinizde Anselm Kiefer in mimari alana olan muamelesini yanı sıra Gerhard Richter’in renk kullanımı ve fırça darbeleriyle de bağlantı hissediyorum. Kendinize yakın hissettiğiniz, hayran olduğunu ya da etkileyici diyebileceğiniz ressamlar var mı?

commuted, at the beginning I was working without pain to the subject and in the second time I followed love. Sometimes the subject is an opportunity to achieve what I have in my mind. The reason, that why my idea is to do an absence figure as whole in a painting, who searches to find the primary essence of painting that is linen canvas. Images helps me to concretize the original concept that I have in my mind, the subject became an instrument in the hand of the painting – not vice versa. My words might appear as a tautology but these are my truth.

Graf: In your paintings I feel a connection with Gerhard Richter’s use of color and brush strokes, as well as Anselm Kiefer’s treatment of architectural space. Are there any painters that you feel close or admire or you even could call influential?

Giannoni: When I get back to oil painting I tried to do something that was never done before, I mean, I used a material incredibly thick to realize a figurative settings.

I made an exercise. I would like to use the world exercise just like back in the 16th century when several artists were doing exercise in a sense of an astonishing the public with their artworks. I thought to impress the public by doing a figurative subject with a rich, grave, material, and abstract way of painting. When I restarted with this technique I was not influenced by any artist and did not think for any artistic movement even it was

mek istediğim şu ki inanılmaz derecede kalın bir malzemeyi figüratif ayarları gerçekleştirmek için kullandım. Ben bir alıştırma yaptım. Honestly I did not know the abstract painting of Fernon – I watched a movie – or Spatola, which could slightly remind my art because especially nowadays in the field of painting the differences are millimetric in opposite to the new tendencies of contemporary art such as video, installation, and sculpture. Also different artist’s manners are recognizable because they are connected to technology, and each time there is a technological innovation which artists could use other way to create artworks to represent their ideas. In the case of painting, after thousand years of painting; creating big changes are more difficult because the big news were brought by Francis Bacon or Pablo Picasso. Rembrandt and Caravaggio are both changes too. Also there are a lot of little movements unknown to the public such as Secant. He was a person personality of whom was bigger than Freud and who was anticipated his way of presenting and representing things and facts. After those two big painters in the 20th century such as Picasso, there was Marcel Duchamp who took a distance to the rules of representation and the formalist painting that prevalent in that period.

Duchamp was clever that after seeing Picasso’s artworks, he decided not to use paintings. If you think about an artist who made big changes and bring originality into the art field such as Richter and Bacon; you can imagine that it will be complicated not to be influenced and touched by their practice if you work in the same period of time.

Graf: Let us talk about the works at the Show, in which you mainly exhibit canvases depicting libraries and book stores. How did you start this series?

Giannoni:This is a very intimate side of my personality, a deep part of the program of my painting. This is not scheduled on my practice at the beginning. I had an idea; painting without thinking to a subject and then spending more and more time in a certain type of library – especially the Seeber in Florence – I became familiar with this place, I decided to take a series of pictures and I started to represent it. But as I said earlier, completely independent from what was

Picasso gibi 20 yüzyılın iki büyük ressamından sonra, o dönemde yaygın olan sunum kurallarını ve biçimcilik resmini geride bırakan Marcel Duchamp’dır.

Duchamp, Picasso’nun sanat eserlerini gördükten sonra resimleri kullanmamaya karar vermede zekiydi. Richter ve Bacon gibi sanat alanında büyük değişiklikler yapan ve orijinallik getiren sanatçıları düşünürseniz, onlarla aynı dönemde çalışsanız onların uygulamalarından etkilenmemenin karmaşık olduğunu düşünebilirsiniz.

represented, then a particular affection was born and it started to look like a game of taking picture of many bookshops that I visited in Paris, London, New York and continuing my research with same subject. Everything was born with an affection On the other hand, The Stock exchange was born as a totally opposite subject based on 2 kind of informations such as static information made by color and different from the library feeling made by human figure that warm up your soul. In this place you feel surrounded by a magnificent history, image of Dostojesky or other authors, Sartre Tomas Mann, and also comes up in your mind the sanatory where the main character goes to the magic mountain or it can remind snow’s steppe where the french’s army stopped in front of cossack of War and Peace and all of the history that are contained. Differently, in the Stock Exchange, there is a strong and cold information that does not involve you. Information was bound to an accumulation of money’s story, and led lights that blind constantly eyes. This information does not remain for a long time.

Graf: The paintings of stock exchanges are crowded with people. Most of your bookstores seem disserted, as only the interior and its books are visible. Why? Giannoni: The bookshop is totally full of story told

Farklı bir şekilde Borsa, ruhunuzu ısıtan insan figürü tarafından yapılan kütüphane hissinden farklı olarak renklerden yapılan statik bilgi gibi 2 tür bilgiye dayanan tamamen zıt bir konu olarak doğdu. Graf: Borsa resimleri insanlarla dolu. Kitapçılarınızın çoğu, yalnızca içi ve kitapları görünüyor olduğundan nutuk çekiyor gibi gözüküyor. Neden?

Giannoni: Kitapçı, insan onların özünde olduğundan onların varlığını gerektirmeyen insanlık tarafından anlatılan hikâyelerle doludur. Bunun aksine Meydan ve Borsa’da görünmeyen canavarlaştırılmış bir adam vardır, yalnızca bu alanlara geçen ve bir kimlik yaratmadan bir hikaye oluşturan fikirler vardır.

Aslında meydanda boşluk olsa da ve figürün hareketi olmasa da, yüzü olmayan insanlar gitgide daha fazla varlık göstermeye ve Borsa’da saptanabilir hale gelmiştir.

Graf: Kalın boyanın pek çok katmanından dolayı resimlerinizde renk patlaması yaşanıyor. Bir bakıma, çalışmalar bir kabartmaya hatta heykele benzer fiziksel bir karaktere sahip. Renklerin sizin için ve çalışmalarınız için önemi nedir?

Giannoni: Bu tür renkleri kullandım çünkü renklerin gücünü özellikle kırmızının tonunu turuncu bir skalaya dönüşürken çok sevdiğimden – doğal olmadan – kombinasyona kalkışma konusunda hassasım. Çok basit dahi olsa resimde renklerin göze saldırısı ortaçağ resimlerinde olduğu gibi bir gösterim oluşturan unsurlardan biridir. by human beings that does not need the presence of them because human being exists in their essence.

Contrarily in the Square and in The Stock Exchange; there is a man dehuminized and not visible, there is only ideas that transits in those places and builds a story on it without creating an identity. In fact there is emptiness in the square and the movement of the figure does not exist, people without faces became more and more present and detectable in the Stock Exchange.

Graf: Your paintings burst of color due to their many layers of thick paint. In a way the works have a very physical character, nearly like a relief or even sculpture. What importance does color have for you and your work?

Giannoni: I use this kind of color because I am too sensible to dare a combination – without been innatural – because I like the power of colors, especially the tone of red when it turns into an orange scale. I think the attack of the color on the eye, even if is an extremely simple elements. Painting is one of those elements to create the representation such as in the medieval paintings. For many years medieval paintings were considered as a tonal painting but was a practice where there was a strong symbology bound to the power of color. In fact if you think villages that were represented in those paintings, the richest one

Ben ürünlerimi ve kütüphane yapımlarını ve kitapları – Hitten’in yaptığı gibi – renklerde bulmadığımdan, ama olasılıkla ondan renk sembollerinin anlamlarını çaldığımdan; çölleşmemden itibaren,çalışmalarımda renklerin bir sembolojisini hiç düşünmemiş olsam da, daha sonra gelmesi olası psikolojik bir iletişime önem vermesem de insanlar için renklerin önemini anlayabildim.

Graf: 2012 yılında dört triptik ile bir gösteri yaptınız. Çalışmalarınızda triptik nasıl bir rol oynuyor?

Giannoni: Özel bir neden yok, diptik ve triptik boyutunu bu sanat çalışması serisinde kullandığımdan, büyüklüğü 4 dev diptik gerçekleştirdiğim ve 200 x 600 xm bir boyut kullanmayı tercih ettiğim Roma, Palazzo delle Esposizioni’deki son sergimdeki kadar büyük olmadığından büyük bir tuvalde boyanabilirdi. O çalışmalarda, mevcut sergide sunulan çalışmalarla bazı elemanlar ve yapıların temelini kurabildik, gösterilerin her ikisinde de diptik ve triptik formatı, kapatılması mümkün bir kanada benzer yana eğik pano ile ortaçağı hatırlatır. caratherized by using vivid and intense colors while the poorest one was defined by less rich scale of color. From my desertation we could confirm the importance of the color for human being even if I have never thought to a symbology of color in my works.

I have not paid any attention to a psychological communication that probably came up later because I have not found my production and the construction of libraries and book on colors – as Hitten did in his books – but I probably steal the meaning of symbology of color from him.

Graf: In 2012 you did a show with four triptychs.

What role does the triptych play in your works?

Giannoni: There is no specific reason why I used the size of diptych and triptych in this series of artworks.

They could also be painted in one big canvas because the size was not as big as my latest exhibition at Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome where I realized 4 giant diptych, and I preferred to use a size 200 x 600 cm. You can find some elements and structures with the works presented in the current exhibition both shows the format of diptych and triptych remind the medieval board with the lateral panel that are like flap possible to close. This schema reminds my provenience, I am an Italian and I have this way

Giannoni: Transavanguardia’nın büyük bir başarı elde ettiği ve tüm uluslar arası ürünlerin resme döndüğü zaman – suluboya soyut üretimi bıraktıktan sonra – figüratif resme geri döndüm. Daha önce hiç kimse tarafından yapılmayan ve figüratif nesneyi inşa eden soyut malzemenin büyük bir kısmı tarafından karakterize türde bir resim yapmayı düşündüğümden her hangi bir diğer sanatçıyla bağlantılı olabileceğimi hiç bir zaman düşünmedim. of representation that comes from the idea of separation and dimension reverses in a sort of intellectual sensuality. In my paintings I feel the idea of separation as a seduction and a way to pay homage to Medieval and Renascence the paintings.

Graf: An oeuvre of an artist resembles a quest into the unknown, where certain questions regarding art and reality get investigated. Due to your experience, and the development of your work over the last 30 years, your ouevre acquired a certain maturity. Still, your journey is ongoing.

So, what do you think: To where it will lead you?

Giannoni: I get back to figurative painting – after leaving my watercolor abstract production – in the time when the Transavanguardia was having a big success and all the international productions were reverting into a painting. I have never thought that I could be linked to any other artist because I thought to produce a kind of painting that was never done by anyone before. Caratherized by those big part of abstract material that build the figurative subjects. This is not my case, I ve never need to copy anybody, I had a unique idea of painting – that somehow, was never made before – and I tried to follow my feelings, and some how I made it, still walking on my way.

Massimo Giannoni, önemli oranda medyatik gelişime sahip çağdaş dünyayla karşı karşıya kalmaktan korkmuyor. Sanatçı, aslında ressamlık gibi eski ve düzenli bir dil yoluyla karmaşık mekanizmaların iç yönünü anlamlandırmak için kitle iletişim unsurlarını toplar ve dönüştürür. Massimo Giannoni isn’t afraid of confronting the contemporary world with its great mediatric development. The artist, in fact, collects and transforms elements of mass communication in order to make sense of the interior of complex mechanisms by way of an ancient and articulate language like painting.

Actually, painting itself represents an instrument of analysis often overlooked and considered obsolete, that nevertheless is able to posses a new ability to study and interpret, thanks to that which many consider its limits, like th weight of the history which preceeds it, or the slow speed of its execution. Giannoni, not by chance, places his work in a closed confrontation with the medium of photography, which represents a source declared by his paintings and does not forget the artists of international fame, such as those of the great German school of Photography.

Nevertheless, this relationship doesn’t limit the quality of the work. Instead, it permits him to amplify his limits and his possibilities of representation, thanks to an articulate and layered operation that begins with a mediatic base and finishes with a new, elaborate density.

This is how the artist confronts the electronic simultaneity of the global world of today, united by the web and by satellite networks, and gives form to his vision of this simultaneous state with a painterly style.

That intentionally arrives at openly tactile outcomes that challenge that which many theorists consider the “tactile” nature of media electronics. In his apparently discordant representation of libraries, the feverish activity of the stock markets, of forests, or of the city, Giannoni’s intent seems to give a concrete nature to the images that cross into that simultaneous dimension, to give back a physical presence to

their immateriality, as if the shared reality at the end of a production circuit, and the diffusion and reception of the comunicative impulses could only be reelaborated, pondered, and re-created through the landscape through the sight and the hand of the artist. The artist choses, in fact, with great attention, the images he decide sto transform into paintings and he makes them undergo a refined operation of transformation, by way of a work that goes beyond the simple painterly dimension, in order to reach a broader meaning, as if the essence of an image were discovered through the flow and the accumulation of the paint of the canvas. This process of material manifestation represents, in this way, a type of simbolic itinerary that finds, in the density of the painting, its completion and the conservation of a depth that saves the work from that effemeral destiny that is riserve for most of the images of today. In this sense, Giannoni’s works (like almost all good painting) at first glance seems to suffer from their relationship with photography and typographic reproduction that they cannot yet document the lively vibration of their chromatic texture. But this problem is created by an invitation to overcome an eccessivelycrushed idea of the reproductibility of a work of an art and its necessary diffusion in the insides of mediatic channels to reach a simultaneously new and ancient relationship with the work itself; all the while

assuming a direct and empathetic contact between the viewer and the work. This could occur for those site-specific installations and video installations that assume direct access to the viewer inside the space that is governed and re-codified by them. The painting acts in a different way, given that both its support and surface function as barriers and filters – those which the Futurists sought to overcome, in their idea of destruction of boundaries and in their wish to place “the viewer at the center of the painting”. Giannoni uses two parallel solutions to stand in for this apparent limit: the perspective and the density of the paint.

These two elements become instruments to find a new connection between the sight and the “window” of the painting. The paint is richly thick, and it constitutes an element of an almost spatial junction between the world of the paintings and the world of the viewer. This becomes a meeting point between the great tradition of Western painting, that paradoxically flips its vocation, and as we have seen, becomes a method of dialogue and of creating a relationship with the electronic contemporary world.

In this context, also the perspectives in the works of Giannoni are not casual, but their construction appears to derive from a precise emblematic will to bypass the simple representation of a place or of a moment. This way, you can see how a re-linkable vision to a linear, humanistic perspective winds up the

works, which present libraries and forests, both natural and cultural spaces, centures-old territories of isolation and contemplation, where we will be able to look for an existential and psychological center (which is, perhaps, alluded to in the simboli “fire” of the perspective).

On the contrary, for the paintings which depict the stock markets and the city scenes, the painter uses arial, bird’s eyes views as if these realities were percievable only through a distant vision which does not enter directly into a relationship with the swarming of voices and bodies which inhabits these spaces.

Therefore, it is important to recognize how this type of perspective is able to enclose the presence of the human figures; it is as if the artist felt he was capable of representing humanity only from afar, keeping a deliberate separation between himself and his subject. In a certain sense, we can conclude that the Giannoni’s libraries and the forest were conceived as a sort of subjective element of the viewer, who, while observing the works, becomes a protagonist in them, as if he/she were actually walking between the trees or consulting the volumes of the books. The distance and the raised perspective of the stock market interiors and of the cityscapes, on the other hand, are depiced using a choice which abstracts them from their lively context, as though we were watching with a

hypothetical eye suspended in space, not involved directly in that which it is observing. Giannoni mediatestheis process while succeeding, however, in collecting the complexity of these simultaneous scenarios. This complexity is found directly in the painting, and it contains the most appropriate expression.

Thanks to a style modeled around its expressive and comunicative necessities, Giannoni’s painting, in its mosaic of united tactile pictoral fragments succeeds in understanding, in this way, the complexity positioned in the limitless labirynth of books, which, note by note, bibliography by bibliography, unites the volumes, the citations, and branches of studies, piecing together in following the invisible and limitless plots of thought and the intellectual search. nakçaları, çalışmaların ciltlerini, alıntılarını ve farklı dallarını bir araya getirerek kitapların sınırsız labirentinde konumlanmış bir karmaşıklık sunar.

A parallel complexity in enclosed in the grass, in the bark of the trees, in the rocks, and in the waters that unify microscopic and macroscopic worlds, the overlapping and densely-woven ecosystems that compose the scene: the risk that our living planet poses to us, and vice versa. Similarly, the dense vibration of the chromatic body of the paintings succeeds in paraphrasing the immense net of money flow, of business dealing, of positive and negative results, as though it were able to discover a secret logic in the traces of the streets and city squares, in the passerby and in the buildings, in the shadows and in the lights of today’s cities. So, it was perhaps inevitabile that Rome would become the protagonist in Giannoni’s latest works, which, with their rigorous “system” succeed in lowering themselves into the depths of an ungraspable city, recognizable maybe only from above, while searching to find a hidden sense in the presence of the buildings, in the stop-and-go urban movement, in its insertion of events and of contradictions, of existences and historic relations, networks of order and disorder, in its fears of its own inevitabile dissolution and in its hopes of a definite and splendid rebirth.

There are no longer walls that can be able to support, not even if they were boundary walls made of bronze, as those of the mythical Argo. There are no doors, even if armoured, nor double glazed windows, able to prevent this blinding light and this deafening noise from penetrating. There are no computer controls nor censorships able to prevent this contemporaneity, this reality, from invading our spot, be it too private, silent or isolated.

There are no cities, even if charged of history or preserved within their monuments and architecture, their frescos and their marble and bronze statues, from their museums and their churches, able to prevent this world to insinuate into the studio of a painter and leave a trace on his canvases, make use of its colours, imprison the agitations and anxiety of our times.

Not even if the city was that of Florence, not even if the studio was the one, immerse in the silence of a faraway place, of Massimo Giannoni.

Contemporaneity in art is a problem, in fact, the problem of our times, because it has not always been so. While art was sacred, contemporaneity wasn’t actually a problem. While art was historic, contemporaneity wasn’t a problem, as it was not in ideologically structured societies. Not even in abstract painting, typical modern trait, contemporaneity has never been a problem. The aim, in all these aesthetic regimes, was to make the sacred, history, ideology and abstraction contemporaneous.

Contemporaneity is a problem when it becomes a shortcut in itself, or even better a specific genre within a generic time, when the sacred, history, modernity and ideology are over, only our time remains, not supported by apparent structures that tell us how to move or step forward.

Yine de günümüzde her zamankinden daha fazla bir şekilde çağdaşlık bakımından fikir, öz, tanım dışında hiçbir soyutluk yoktur. Herşey çok değişken, kararsız ve çelişkilidir. Bugünün felaket ve olağanüstü haberleri bir önceki gerçekleşmeden yarınkiler ile yer değiştirmektedir. Bu değişken tarihte geleceğin yeri işgal edilmeye hazırdır ve şimdiki zaman, mevcut çağdaşlık, karasal Evrenin zaman ve mekanı içerisinde pozisyon ve tanımlamaların bir sorunu haline gelmektedir.

Massimo Giannoni’nin çağdaşlaşmaya bu anlamda değinmek istemesi önemli bir nokta haline gelmektedir, özellikle de bunu geleneksel anlamda yağlı boya resmiyle ve bu serginin eserlerine has bir konfigürasyonda yapmak istediğinde bu önem artmaktadır. Riskli ve potansiyel olarak kendini yıkıcı bir çarpışma: Usta Ressam resimlerinin tipik biçimlerinde yağlı boyada sabitlenmiş değişken bir olgu. Çağdaş olduğunu iddia eden bir ressamın böyle yapması için bilinçsiz bir farkındalık olması şarttır, bugünün bazı gözlemcilerine sorarsanız birini çağdaş olarak tanımlamak için yaşıyor ve aktif olması yeterli değildir.

To be or not to be contemporaneous nowadays is a matter of compulsory choices: are there any other choices? Even the State of the Vatican, the least contemporaneous of all States in terms of necessity, is analizing this matter in the artistic field: to open a Pavilion at the next Biennale of Venice, which is, whether you like it or not, still the mother of the biennales of Contemporary Art! And yet there is nothing so intangible, today more than ever, only an idea, an essence, a definition of contemporaneity. Everything too fluid, too unstable, too variable. Today’s news, yet catastrophic and spectacular, is replaced by that of tomorrow and even before this one takes place: the place of the future in this fluctuating history is ready to be occupied and the present, the being contemporaneous, becomes a problem of definitions and positions within time-space of our terrestrial Universe.

It’s in this sense that wanting to deal with contemporaneity for Massimo Giannoni becomes a critical point, especially when wanting to do it by the traditional means of oil painting and in the peculiar configuration given to the work of this exhibition: the triptych. A risky and potentially self-destructive collision: a fluid phenomenon fixed on oil in typical formats of Old Master paintings.

There must be a certain unconscious awareness to do so in a painter who claims to be contemporane-

şansına eriştim. Detaylı bir şekilde belirtmem gerekirse, tanımlamaya değer bulduğum Çağdaş Sanat sorusunu tartışan ve eleştiren The Art Horror Picture Show1kitabında bu konuya değindim.

Fransız Sanat Tarihçisi Catherine Millet bu gibi bir meseleyle karşı karşıya kaldığında en zekice cevapları veren kişilerden biri oldu. Çağdaş Sanatın yalnızca bir “cazibe kutbu” olduğunu belirtmiş ve “bundan ne azı ne de fazlasıdır” diye eklemiştir. Bu anlamda, zamanımızda mevcut aşkınlık ve işitsel durumlarını yutma yetisi olan daha iyi tanımlanmamış bir felaket ya da kara deliktir.2 Sosyolog Nathalie Heinich3’e göre, “çağdaşlık” geleneksel bir bakış açısında belirtildiği gibi tarihsel bir ana işaret eden bir kelime değildir.Aslında yalnızca üstesinden gelinmiş geleneksel bir bakış açısı ile Giotto veya Bernini’nin kendi zamanlarında yaptıkları gibi belirli bir tarihi anda faaliyet gösteren ve etkileşenler çağdaştır. ous, as for nowadays, according to some observers of the present, it’s not enough to be alive and active to call oneself contemporaneous.

I have already had the chance of speaking about the word contemporaneous before, and more specific, in a book, The Art Horror Picture Show,1 that discusses and critiques the question of Contemporary Art, concept which I believe is worth defining.

The French Art Historian Catherine Millet has been one of the sharpest ones when having to face such matter, stating that Contemporary Art wouldn’t be other than a “pole of attraction, nothing more and nothing less”, and by this meaning a sort of not better defined calamity or black hole capable of swallowing the instances of transcendence and aural present in our times.2 According to sociologist Nathalie Heinich3 “contemporaneous” is not, as claims the traditional point of view, a word that points out a historical moment.

Actually, only through a traditional point of view, already overcome, all those who operate and interact in a certain historical moment would be contemporaneous, as were Giotto or Bernini at their time.

Heinich claims that the traditional view is only “one” possible interpretation of the contemporaneous, over which not everyone agrees today, considering the contemporary as an art genre which doesn’t depend on when it was done but rather on how, by MARCO TONELLI Triptikler / Triptychs 33

Amerikan filozof Arthur Danto’ya göre “çağdaş” zaman içerisinde bir süreyi tanımlamaz, ancak hikayenin kaybolmasından sonra olanı ve sanatla ilgili ayrıcalıklı söylemleri tanımlar.Bu anlamda “çağdaş” bir stil değildir, ancak “stillerin kullanılma şeklidir”4, neticede sanat gelişimi derecesinin birlikte değerlendirildiği bir ölçüm birimi olarak anlaşılan stil eksikliği ile nitelenen bir dönemdir.Daha sınırlı ve üslup kriterlerine dayalı “postmodern” terimini kullanmak yerine, filozoflar çağdaş kelimesini tanımlamak için “tarih sonrası” terimini kullanmayı önerir.

Massimo Giannoni’ye triptik şeklindeki bu dört çalışma onun çağdaşlık kavramının şiirsel manifestosunun bir türünü temsil ettiğinden bunu resmettiği andan itibaren bu anlamda çağdaşlık anlayışına dair ne düşündüğünü sormak bir işe yaramayacaktır. İlk olarak, dört konunun seçimi,bu gibi ikili zıtlıkların oluşumunun gerçek tanımlayıcı niyeti olmadan, ensest bir birleşmeyle sonuçlanan zıtlıkların iki şizofrenik çiftidir.

Therefore it´s a precise type of art and in consequence, not all the living artists that exhibit in art museums, according to this innovative point of view, can be considered contemporaneous. There’s a difference between he who produces art in his own time (and is not considered contemporaneous) and he who produces art in his own time (and is considered contemporaneous), as if the latter were more real than the former.

According to the American philosopher Arthur Danto “contemporaneous” defines not a period in time but that which happens after the disappearance of narrations and privileged discourses about art. In this sense, “contemporaneous” is not a style, but “the way of using the styles”,4 all in all a period characterized by the lack of style understood as a measuring unit with which to judge the degree of art development. Instead of using the term “postmodern”, too narrow and subject to stylistic criteria, our philosopher suggests, in order to indicate contemporaneity, to use the term “post-historical”.

It would be useless to ask Massimo Giannoni what he thinks about contemporaneity understood in that way, from the moment in which he has painted it and because these four works in the shape of triptychs represent a sort of poetic manifest of his conception of contemporaneity.

ophrenic couple of opposites which end up mating incestuously, without there being any real illustrative intention of creating such binary opposites.

On one hand, a Stock Exchange Market and a big over crowded Piazza, or even better, shades dug out from the thick layers of colour. It’s difficult to choose topics more fluctuating and unstable in which the human presence is no other than a mere passage and the experience of our everyday life, something inexistent, connected to the fluctuating market indexes and valuations that don’t mean other than financial risks. It’s something typical of our times, of our historical moment. All the attention seems so strategically turned towards such a financial circus, a real farce such as a sneeze, a sentence or a momentary fright can provoke economical collapses of entire nations (or at least that’s what they make us believe). When the attention is not directed towards this financial merry-go-round, it points towards a scenery of piazzas full of outraged masses that protest and that can at times ruin regimes so stable to the point of seeming everlasting.

The Stock Exchange Market and the Piazza, two faces of the same coin (not by chance are they called “business squares”), moments of a contemporaneity that cannot be fixed in shapes nor numbers without experiencing a mutation from one minute to the other.

To this first couple, Massimo Giannoni opposes another: the Wailing Wall of Jerusalem and the Seeber bookstore of Florence. Both symbols of knowledge and of historical and cultural practices. Nothing apparently more stable, images that seem to be suspended in time, that speak about time and its passage, that cannot be called contemporaneous in the sense of Millet, Heinich or Danto but that, at the same time, are an incarnation of our history, our conflicts, the religions and hopes of the world, culture and knowledge, wisdom and memory. Here, the signs of time can be read, they are engraved in the thickness of the pages of books or on the rough surface of the stones of a wall. In Giannoni’s Stock Exchange Markets, for example, there seem to be architectonical blocks, streets and metropolis seen from above, as if they were sarcophagi of nuclear power plants made MARCO TONELLI Triptikler / Triptychs 35

Danto’ya göre çağdaş sayılmazlar, fakat aynı zamanda dünyamız, kültürümüz ve bilgimiz, bilgeliğimiz ve anılarımıza ait tarihin, çatışmaların, dinlerin ve umutların vücut bulmuş halleridir. of sealed concrete; in his Parisian square we will see excavated human figures as if a child’s finger had furtively removed the cream from the cake; in the Seeber bookstore some feeble shapes of books, vanished as ghosts, have left a trace of their disappearance. Messages that are at the same time dark and clear of a figurative unconsciousness of our times.

However (here the incestuous cross), if we knew that the Parisian square is actually the square of the museum of museums, the Louvre, and if we thought of the fact that the volumes of books are sold, this is where the flux of the square is related to the secular memory of ancient walls where millenary documents of human civilization (the museum) and that the stability of a bookshelf and of texts belonging to the wisdom of the past and present of mankind is not other than the fluid structure of a commerce, of a contemporaneous exchange. A certainly involuntary and not programmed incest on behalf of the artist, but anyhow underlined, as a hidden secret, beneath these poles. Today, the Seeber bookstore painted by Giannoni, no longer exists. The Wailing Wall of Jerusalem, host of prayers of every religion and creed magically suspending every form of contrast in the name of faith, it´s in vain to shut oneself into the endless secrets hidden in them.

Massimo Giannoni çağdaş olmak için resim yapmıyor ve eserlerini tarihe veya kalıcı yapma ihtiyacını hissetmiyor. O sadece resim yapıyor. Massimo Giannoni doesn’t paint to become contemporaneous and neither does he feel the need to include his work in the history or chronic. He just paints. Nevertheless, in his works we perceive the question of what it is to be contemporaneous and of how current history enters a painting, apart from the fact that the experience of a painter might still be able to express something actual. The thought of how to be contemporaneous and to not forget remaining as such, flows through his work as the sap of a tree in its trunk. It’s not a matter of being in favour or against oil painting, in favour or against contemporaneity, as long as these two positions remain fundamental when trying to understand the art of our times. In case they were, regarding the first example, we could definitely believe that oil painting could still be a sort of ethical and not only technical matter, as believed by some important contemporary painters such as Wang Yidong or XinDongwang, though in an exquisite realistic sense, illustrative and emotional. But is it still as such for us westerns today?

böyle olsalar bile, keskin bir realist bakış açısıyla tasvir edici ve duygusal yönden bakarsak, Wang Yidong veya XinDongwang gibi bazı önemli çağdaş ressamlarının düşündüğü şekilde yağlı boya resimleri sadece teknik bir mesele değil, aynı zamanda etik ile alakalı bir mesele de olabilir. As for the rest, it’s not important to discuss whether painting, in genre, is a way of narrating, symbolising or communicating our time and its dynamics, when contemporaneity is in itself fleeting and unpredictable. Is there anything less capable of representing it as oil painting?

The problem within the works of Massimo Giannoni is both aesthetic and ethic (to whom and why paint?), time regarding and iconographic (when and what to paint) and yet today it presents itself beyond these aspects, even protecting them. A way that renders the contents universal, presenting them in order to overcome them, making them manifest in order to perform another rite.

Over these four altars of contemporaneity, these four triptychs that have left an open door to the world and its claims, odours and colours, Massimo Giannoni celebrates painting, reassumes his own history through subjects represented in the past, he creates an identity which he hopes will go beyond the need of having to be contemporaneous today when this condition will no longer be called as such tomorrow (maybe “post”, “hyper” or “supra” contemporary?).

Triptik bir Ağlama Duvarı’nın değil, gerçeklik duvarının, geçici çağdaşlığın, bu çağdaşlığın canlılığını destekleyerek, ekstrem bir savunmasına dair varlığın, direnişin bilinçsiz bir onayı olur. Bu eserler de resimle birlikte zamanımızın ve estetiğimizin ajite ve uygulanmış bir yansıması olur.

Massimo Giannoni kutupluğu ne kazanan ne de kaybeden bırakır, triptik gibi geleneksel bir formun rehabilitasyonu da yoktur, çağdaşlık da hem övülmez hem de reddedilmez. Yalnızca günümüzdeki olası tek tarih biçimi buymuş gibi paylaşılacak özel ve mevcut bir tarihi anlayış vardır. tych, not to paint the scenes of a triptych but to fragment one single scene according to the formal sequence of a triptych. He understands that nowadays it’s impossible to paint a triptych and to make contemporary happen, he understands that he could not paint the ghost of a sequence or of a simultaneity as done by Francis Bacon in his triptychs (aim out of reach and therefore not viable by others). Massimo Giannoni takes the skeleton of a well-structured historical cage as that of the triptych and imposes it formally to his painting, almost forcing it and being forced by specific exhibitive conditions. This is a metaphor of a contemporaneity that invades us even with the door shut and when it’s impossible to forget one’s own history even when it seems unproductive and beyond fashion to narrate it.

The triptych becomes an unconscious way of affirming existence, resistance, not of a Wailing Wall but of a wall of reality, of an extreme defense of fleeting contemporaneity but also in favour of its vitality. And these works become a reflection, agitated and practiced with the painting, of our times and our aesthetic.

The polarity of Massimo Giannoni doesn’t leave winners nor losers, there’s no rehabilitation of a traditional form such as that of the triptych nor is contemporaneity celebrated nor denied. There’s simply a private and current historical sense that is to be shared, as if this were the only form of history possible today. If others and well-known thinkers have spoken of an end of art history and of history itself (Hans Belting in the artistic field, Francis Fukuyama in the historical one), the painting of Massimo Giannoni could perfectly be that what happens after the end of history but that continues being that what it has always been. There are no crucifixes nor enthroned divinities in the triptychs painted by Massimo Giannoni, but visions of our current days, visions that are not incarnated in mechanical nor technological grids as those with pixels by Cristiano Pintaldi or even more impressive but at the same time controlled as those by Davide la Rocca. Jean Clair yıllardır çağdaş sanattaki her türlü tapınma ve kutsalın kaybını haber veriyordu, bunların hakim olması gereken yerde pislik ve ekonomik yatırımın hastalıklı tutkusu vardı. Çağdaş sanatın bozulmasına dair bu vahiyimsi bozulma şikayeti belki de paradoksal olarak iyiydi ve gerçekçiydi, ayrıca geri dönüş yolu yoktu. Esas nokta bunun ötesinde başka bir şey hayal edebilmektir, çünkü zaman bu estetik kültürel bozulmanın, Fransız eleştirmenin de günümüzde açıkça belirttiği gibi bu “kültür kışının” ötesinde de devam etmektedir.Clair’den alıntı yapma nedenim hor görme değildir. Bodies that speak of facts that are not however simply those represented but facts of which the painter has had the direct experience while painting them, therefore not experiences of those represented facts (the original scenes are taken from photos “composed” and cut

by Giannoni). Not fleeting presences, but experiences of the fact of painting those composed scenes, these triptychs of contemporaneity celebrate a rite with no gods nor saints, they convert everything to the flesh of what they are made of, they don’t hold any mystery nor dogma other than that of the incarnation of an intention (that pictorial one) in a body as that of the painting.

And while Jean Clair has been denouncing for years a loss of every sense of worship and of sacred in contemporary art, where what would predominate would instead be the morbid passion of the excrements and the economical investment, this complaint of an apocalyptic deterioration of contemporary art and, paradoxically, also benevolent maybe also realistic and with no way out. The point is to be able to imagine something else beyond it, because time continues beyond this aesthetical cultural degradation, beyond this “winter of culture”, as the French critic fairly defines it today. I’m not citing Clair to be con-

nu bir şov haline getirseler daha iyi olmaz mıydı? İşte bu kışımızdan çıkmamız için bir yol.

Esas mesele “baharmışçasına” bir şeyler yapmaya devam etmektir. Benim fikrime göre, Massimo Giannoni’nin de yaptığı budur. It’s in fact thinking about him that I found myself, together with Giannoni, walking through the rooms of an exhibition5 dedicated to the power of finance, social and monetary prestige that were behind culture, the Masterworks and art of the Renaissance. Together with Giannoni we have actually asked ourselves if applying a similar reconstruction and a historical and artistic analysis to our moment would be a better option than that of complaining about a contemporary degradation. Instead of golden leaves, spices, elegant voyage bags, donor figures, wouldn’t it have been better if Clair and those who think like him approached auctions, curriculum of supra-collectors, contracts of gallerists, denouncing the income of superstar contemporary artists, and make a show out of it? Hereby a way to exit this winter of ours.

The point is in fact to continue doing things as if it were “spring” and I believe that this is the attitude chosen by Massimo Giannoni, a painter who doesn’t chain himself up, doesn’t save on colour and protects himself bellow the cupola of Brunelleschi but that at the same time lets the fable of contemporaneity invade him, making it beautiful even where dramatic.

It’s clear that in current art there is a problem of systems, from the time when art no longer trusts single languages nor specific media but their dissolutions or refusals. Everything is granted in a MARCO TONELLI Triptikler / Triptychs 41

And so shall be, otherwise why deny that for some it could be worth of a specific media discourse and that this shall also have a specific contemporary dimension? Isn’t this maybe what artists such as Massimo Giannoni search to do? If it weren’t as such, we wouldn’t be able to define as contemporary extraordinary painters which are internationally celebrated as Miquel Barcelò, Gerhard Richter or Cecily Brown! And yet the fact that the contemporaneity of the painting by Massimo Giannoni shall not only be generically confronted with another painting, but with the fragmented painting through an optical language not originally pictorial and with the media characteristic of another genre, in particular with that of some photographers as Andreas Gursky or Candida Hofer, that frame scenes that, for iconography and compositional motive, are similar to his, but to which they give a strong chromatic sense, well adapted to the paintings. It’s therefore in the encounter of the different media of painting and photography of this genre that we can find the idea of contemporaneity in Massimo Giannoni. It would be a vision of and about the contemporary reality, that of which painting has always been a window to the world mediated in our times by other windows, other structures and visual framings.

Painter of genres and subjects (why not? who isn’t?)

Massimo Giannoni, who has turned some subjects into his own specific and favourite genres (but still: why not? who doesn’t?), doesn’t choose them as metaphors or as a way to hide symbolic corpses, but as motifs, as ways, as instruments to anchor painting to the contemporary reality, that is then, selfishly, his reality. Massimo Giannoni chooses his subjects as alibis in order not to have to explain that which is not other than a spring time of painting, happily absorbed, exuberant, technically sure, probably uncertain and at the same time solid, even there where the empty plot emerges out of the canvas to reveal the thickness of such material. But at the same time his subjects aren’t indifferent to what they represent.

They are not scenes of destruction or violence, mediatically efficient and always to the effect of a col-

bir alan koymak, yokluğun yerine bir varlığın gücünü ileri sürmek içindir. Motives of cultural stimulations and not spectacular, the greatness of these works is given essentially by their corporeal and pictorial presence.

In that sense, the motives of the paintings by Massimo Giannoni cannot be indifferent.

For years Massimo Giannoni seems to have feared not the emptiness but rather the incorporeal, to the point of covering every single centimetre of his canvases, adding colour over colour. Now he leaves incorporeal spaces over the naked skin of the canvas, spaces not of doubt nor impossibility of finishing, but of light not painted: not to reveal secrets but to make space, to create breath, to propose the strength of a presence in the place of an absence. To re-propose, in a subtle way, a passion of his for the contradiction and polarity, and to reaffirm the value also mental of painting, beyond the physical one, or better before that physical one, his natural and unavoidable counterpart. In this passage zone and of solidness, flesh and skeleton, colour and naked canvas, Massimo Giannoni lives and allows contemporaneity to live in his work, through perceptible winces which, even with there being a lack of pictorial and plastic irregularities, they remain there to make the difference between living and shaping, experience and representation.

Biyografi

Empoli’de 1954 yılında doğan Giannoni, çalışmalarına yasadığı şehir Floransa’da devam etmektedir.

Yetmişli yıllarda Floransa Güzel Sanatlar Akademisi’ne devam etmiş, sınıf arkadaşlarının portreleri ile resimsel araştırmalarına başlamış ve bu eserler onun ilerideki olgunlaşma yıllarının izlerini taşımıştır. 1979 yılında Lubiam Ödülünü (Mantua) kazanarak İtalya Güzel Sanatlar Akademisi en iyi öğrencisi seçilmiştir.

Galleria Vivita (Floransa)’da (1985, 1987) 2 solo sergi açtıktan sonra 2 yıl geçireceği Avusturalya’ya taşınmış ve sanat çalışmalarına burada devam etmiştir. Bu zaman içerisinde prestijli galeriler ile çalışarak büyük boyutta kağıtlar üzerine suluboya çalışmalar yapmıştır. Aynı zamanda portrelere olan ilgisini devam ettirerek Sidney Modern Sanat Müzesi müdür yardımcısı William Wright‘ın komisyonun parçası olmuştur. Aynı zaman periyodunda uluslararası bir başarı ile sonuçlanan, Şikago ve Newyork arası gidip gelmelerini anlatan Transvanguardia serisine başlamıştır. Daha sonra deneyimlediği portreler ve suluboya çalışmalarını terk ederek, büyük boyutlarda yağlı boya calışmalarına başlamıştır.

Doksanlı yılların sonunda İtalya’ya dönmesi ile birlikte esas konusunu oluşturacak kütüphane, kitaplık, çalışma odası, kitapçı ve borsa piyasalari çalışmalarına başladı. İlerleyen zamanlarda ana konusu olacak bu eserleri sergilemek üzere, La Corte Arte Contemporanea Galeri, Floransa (1998) ve Seeber Kütüphanesi’nde (2000) sergi açtı.

2004 ve 2008 yılları arasında Milano’da (2004 ve 2007, Galleria Rubin), Breska’da (2005 ve 2008, Studio d’Arte Tonelli), Roma’da (2006, Galleria Il Segno, küratör Marco Tonelli) kişisel sergiler açtı.

2005 yılında Marco Tonelli küretörlüğünde, Roma Quadrenali, Fuori tema/Italian Feeling’e (Sergi Sarayı, Roma) ve 2011 yılında 54. Uluslararası Sanat Sergisi Venedik Bienaline (Venedik Sarayı,Roma), Roma Vakfı tarafından seçilen 10 sanatçıdan biri olarak İtalyan Pavyonu’nda) iştirak etti.

Biography Born in Empoli in 1954, he lives and works in Florence.

In the Seventies he attends the Fine Arts Academy of Florence where he begins his pictorial research through a series of portraits of friends and class mates that already show the traces later found in his mature works. In 1979 he is awarded with the Lubiam Prize (Mantua) and is chosen as the best student of the Fine Arts Academy of Italy.

After his first two solo exhibitions at Galleria Vivita of Florence (1985, 1987) he moves to Australia where he lives for almost two years, developing his artistic activity. In this period he attends most of the prestigious galleries and begins a production of water colours on paper of great dimensions. At the same time, he maintains his interest for portraits that will become part of a series of commissions, as that of William Wright, vice director of the Museum of Modern Art of Sidney. During the same period, he begins a series of voyages and sojourns between New York and Chicago related to his interest on the artistic scenery connected to the revival of painting that was emerging in consequence of the International success of the Transvanguardia. Later on, progressively abandoning portraiture and the water colour technique, Giannoni begins a large series of material oil paintings.

Back in Italy in the late Nineties, he concentrates in the representation of what will become his major topics: libraries, bookstores and stock exchange markets. He exhibits in Florence at the La Corte Arte Contemporaneo gallery (1998) and at the Seeber Library (2000), the latter subject of many of his canvases.

Between 2004 and 2008 follow various solo-exhibitions in Milan (2004 and 2007, Galleria Rubin), Brescia (2005 and 2008, Studio d’Arte Tonelli) and Rome (2006, Galleria Il Segno, curated by Marco Tonelli).

In 2011 Galleria Biasutti & Biasutti hosts the one-man show Massimo Giannoni, curated by Giuseppe Biasutti and in 2012, the artist participates in the group exhibition Stanze d’Artista organized

In 2015 he participates in the group exhibition Linee di confine (Boundary Lines), curated by Marco Di Capua at the Carlo Bilotti Museum of Villa Borghese in Rome.

The first one-man show of Massimo Giannoni at the Russo Art Gallery of Istanbul is the first major exhibition organized in the new spaces of the prestigious and historical Italian gallery.
