History In the Spring of 2018, the Hungerford Family of Medina, NY approached Resource:Art with the hope that the art consultancy could assist them in creating a cultural experience inside the former High School which, then purchased for redevelopment. PLAY/GROUND was created to bring immersive fine art experiences to the people of Medina and beyond, and to encourage tourism in the small rural community. With over 3000 visitors and countless positive feedback in its inaugural year, the decision was made to put on the event for a second time in the same space, with new artists and experiences.

Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center was established by Charles Clough, Robert Longo, Diane Bertolo, Nancy Dwyer, Larry Lundy, Cindy Sherman and Michael Zwack in 1974 in a converted ice packing warehouse in Buffalo, the Essex Art Center, which had been converted into studios for artists. The focus of Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center since its inception has been to produce a space that will accommodate artists from diverse backgrounds. Works from varying mediums, which include film, video, performance art, music, painting, photography, and sculpture, have come together since the beginning, to confront the prevailing social issues of contemporary culture. Resource:Art is a unique partnership that brings together the talents of three independent WNY gallerists: Anna Kaplan (Anna Kaplan Contemporary), Elisabeth Samuels (Indigo Art), and Emily Tucker (Benjaman Gallery). Kaplan, Samuels, & Tucker each have extensive curatorial experience and professional relationships with artists working in a wide range of media, including painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, fiber and mixed media works. Resource:Art also manages the execution of site-specific fine art and considers every project as a unique collaboration between the artist and the site, navigating aesthetic, formal, and functional concerns. Since October 2017, Resource:Art has managed The Corridors Gallery at Hotel Henry in Buffalo. FRIDAY NIGHT PREVIEW PARTY FEATURES: Torn Space Theater @tornspace

8:30 & 9:30pm Performances of Torn Space’s Auditorium (30 min) Gaps filled with screenings of video work by FLATSITTER Auditorium (30 min) was created for the occasion of PLAY/GROUND 2019 in response to the sited location on the stage in the heart of the building. You are invited to view the performance from the balcony on the second floor, presented at 8:30pm and then again at 9:30pm.

Auditorium is a site-based performance in traditional TST fashion. The experience focuses on bringing audiences to unexplored spaces, curating their experience, repositioning the familiar into unfamiliar territory, while crafting a series of visual moments that communicate with one another. In site-based works, the architecture provides the visual parameters, often stripped of their original function, and it’s the production’s job to provide context, so that the audience may connect with the space and performance in a meaningful way. Torn Space has developed past work within factories, grain elevators, a steam ship, a processing facility, a train terminal, a church, and now in this auditorium in Medina, NY where you find yourself.

Auditorium was written and directed by Dan Shanahan and Melissa Meola, and is performed by Justin Rowland and Johnny Toohill, with video work by Brian Milbrand, sound design by Justin Rowlan, lighting design by Frankie Napolski, and stage managed by Marisa Caruso.

Buffalo Aerial Dance (B.A.D.) @buffaloaerialdance Buffalo Aerial Dance (B.A.D.) is an aerial arts studio founded in 2014, and specializing in Aerial Silks, Lyra, Trapeze, and Corde Lisse. B.A.D. aerialists are known for blending acrobatic drama with artistic finesse, focused on fusing aerial arts and other forms of dance. For PLAY/GROUND 2019, performers include Jess BG and Cortney Chyme on aerial trapeze, and Hannah Lippencott and Erica Cope on aerial silks.

1 Allan Wexler + SACRA

Field Office: Young Builders Bookmobile Libraries hold the building blocks of culture. Located on the exterior of the building, this “Field Office” travels into neighborhoods offering inspiration and insights. Meaning “a branch office away from the firm’s main office”, it draws in families and individuals to ignite a curiosity about our built environment by offering a selection of specially chosen books and toys about architecture, building, and construction to be appreciated on site.

Allan Wexler has worked in the fields of architecture, design, and fine art. He creates drawings, multimedia objects, images, and installations that comment on and alter perceptions of domestic activities. Allan is a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome, and a winner of a Chrysler Award for Design Innovation, George Nelson Design Award and the Henry J. Leir Prize from the Jewish Museum. In 2016, he received a Guggenheim Fellowship. Absurd Thinking: Between Art and Design, a monograph on Allan’s work has recently been published by Lars Müller.

Society for the Advancement of Construction Related Arts (SACRA) is the flagship program of Assembly House 150 (AH150), a design and construction incubator, experiential learning center, exhibition space and event venue in Buffalo. SACRA is a comprehensive, 15-week career training program in carpentry and woodworking that provides skill-building, work readiness and job placement services to unemployed and underemployed men and women. AH150 was founded by artist and educator Dennis Maher to create new educational opportunities in art, design and construction through experiential, hands-on, community-based learning.

2 Russell Facemire @russellfacemire

Stage-Set for Don Bizarre Occupying the entrance to PLAY/GROUND 2019 is an installation based on an unwritten graphic novel, entitled “Don Bizarre.” Said graphic novel was invoked by an author in the artist’s circle, but never finished, nor truly started. The artist, one Russell Facemire, being unable to access the story (said story being long forgotten) enlisting the help of Pasquale, his current studio partner, forms a stage set from used materials, manifesting, through these, the ghosts which circle the phantom story. The artist hopes to realize, through the execution of his Project, an otherwise inaccessible story by creating an environment conducive for the character “Don Bizarre” to manifest himself.

Russell Facemire is an emerging artist from Braxton County, West Virginia. He is a registered artist-member of West Virginia’s Tamarack Foundation, and his works, including paintings, drawings, comics and performances, have been featured in several group shows, and two solo exhibitions. Russell is currently working towards an MFA degree at SUNY Buffalo, where he shares a studio with its friend and collaborator, Pasquale.

Do You Think My Head Is Too Big This durational, larger than life, experimental puppet show, will be ongoing for the entire PLAY/GROUND weekend, with new Acts beginning at half past every hour. Performers include Avye Alexandres, Dorothea Braemer, Joel Brendan, Anthony Brown, Thea Duskin, Lindsay Griffith, Kristen Kelley, Carl Lee, Justin Leis, Evan Moritz, Peachy, & John Santomieri.

Kyla Kegler studied at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Art Academy of Weissensee, Berlin, receiving her BFA. Kyla went on to study at the Art University of Berlin, receiving her MA in Solo/Dance/Authorship, and most recently completed her MFA in visual art at University at Buffalo in 2018. She has exhibited and performed extensively in Berlin, Buffalo and NYC.

4 Nate Hodge @masiori

Medina Green Abstract painting has taken over every available surface in the former locker room. Acrylic, house paints, salvaged wood and panels, inks and aerosol are all used to transform every inch. The artist’s painting practice is process driven and his site-specific projects unfold in an organic way dictated by the unique nature of the space. The location becomes a central element to the project and provides a structure for marks to grow into and out of, creating a harmony between site and the visual language of the painting. This installation is a chronicle of the relationship developed with the space.

Nate Hodge is an artist living and working out of Brockport, New York. In 2013 he received his BFA from SUNY Brockport and his MFA from the University at Buffalo in the spring of 2015. He has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Maurice J Moss award, the Elliot Painting award the Lillian Fairchild Award. He has created installations and murals regionally, including projects for the college at Brockport, MCC, the WallTherapy program, and the Memorial Art Gallery.

5 Caitlin Deibel @caitdeibelstudio

Just Visiting In a remote corner of PLAY/GROUND, in the surreal space of the former locker room showers is an immersive, interactive light installation created with an overhead projector and locally foraged flora, inviting a meditative experience focused on rebirth.

Caitlin Deibel is a multi-disciplinary conceptual artist living and working in Buffalo. Raised in the country outside of Buffalo, Deibel has always possessed a kinship with the natural world, an inherent part of her education and work. She earned her BFA in Fashion Design with a minor concentration in Communications from Syracuse University and soon after graduating in 2009, moved to New York City. After five years of working in the fashion industry, she relocated to Los Angeles to create visual art, with the intention that her art should help others. Deibel is the founder and editor of LINCOLN Magazine (@lincoln_magazine).

6 Robin Whiteman @robinwhiteman

Kenosis This installation explores the notion of containment, spaces within spaces, filling, emptying...etching the passage of time. Exquisite small sculpture takes over the nooks and crannies of a former locker room area, creating an enticingly surreal environment.

Robin Whiteman’s ceramic work has been shown across the US. Currently, work can be seen in this year’s Chicago Art Expo, Stoerpunkt in Munich, Germany, and Amanyangyun, Shanghai, China, later in the Fall. In 2018, her work was purchased for the permanent collection of the Memorial Art Gallery, shown in a solo show in the Hudson Valley, and exhibited at Aqua Art Miami.

Robin lives in the hills of upstate NY with her husband, daughter and goats. She received her BFA from RIT’s School for American Crafts.

7 Claire Ashley @clairehelenashley

Celestial Boulders (Unseen Organs) This installation mines the language of painterly abstraction, monumental sculpture, slapstick humor, and pop art to transform mundane materials into inflatable painted sculptures and performative props. The artist works with inflatable sculpture as the surface for painting to live and breathe, becoming a tattooed skin of sorts on a kind of hybrid body. These sculptural paintings are animated at night by light. The inflatable form is especially compelling, as it exists in two states - both as flaccid skin and taught volume - metaphors for our bodily processes: inhaling/exhaling; taught/wrinkled skin; flaccid/erect organs etc.

Claire Ashley’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in galleries, museums, and site-specific installations, performances and collaborations. Originally from Edinburgh, Scotland, Claire is now Chicago based, and teaches at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the Department of Contemporary Practices, and the Department of Painting and Drawing. Her work has been featured on blogs such as VICE, Hyperallergic, and Artforum, and in magazines such as Sculpture Magazine, and Art Papers.

8 Ani Hoover @anihoover

Shade Garden The well worn stairwell serves as an ideal setting for a celebration of post consumer materials (mainly plastic bags, thrifted lampshades, and lighting hardware). In this installation, the artist cultivates these neglected materials, transforming them, and in the process creating an unconventional oasis of light and shadow.

Originally from St Joseph, Missouri, Ani Hoover earned her BFA from Missouri State University and her MFA from American University.

Though her early work focused primarily on painting, her more recent focus has expanded to include fiber, sculpture and installations using recycled and unconventional materials. The recipient of many awards and residencies, Ani’s work has been featured in numerous exhibitions regionally, and nationally, and is included in numerous private and public collections, including, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Burchfield Penney Art Center, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, among others.

9 Julian Montague @montagueprojects

Hallway Paintings (Additions & Mutations) The artist’s distinct visual language in mural form dramatically changes the hallway. A series of monumental paintings as a sequence of towers animating the blank spaces between the doorways were begun last Fall for the inaugural PLAY/GROUND. This year, through selective destruction, and further painting, the forms have swelled, expanded, and crept around the corner. The result is an immersive, dynamic engagement with the space.

Julian Montague is known for his photography, design, and installation work, which often explores the peripheral features of the domestic and urban environment. Julian has exhibited throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. His work has received attention from Artnews, Art in America, Frieze, New York Magazine, The New York Times, The Toronto Star, the BBC World Service, and many others. He is represented in the collections of The Albright-Knox, The Burchfield Penney, Delaware North, The Margulies Collection at the Warehouse, and The Norton Museum of Art, as well as numerous private collections.

10 Rich Tomasello @richtomaselloart

Safe Space An expansive installation of manipulated school-associated objects made from the artist’s signature cardboard and white plaster. Over 150 students form the Kenmore, Town of Tonawanda, and Starpoint Central school districts were included in the creation of these objects. The installation addresses the fears and anxieties of growing up in American schools where lockdown drills are commonplace and students and teachers alike must choose between Run, Hide, or Fight.

Rich Tomasello is from Buffalo New York. He earned a BFA in Illustration from the University at Buffalo and an MA in Art Education from Buffalo State College. Rich’s mixed-media work has been featured on The Huffington Post and has been shown in many group and solo exhibitions including: Into Action in Los Angeles, Truth to Power during the 2016 Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Erie Art Museum, the Burchfield Penney, Memorial Art Gallery, and Politicon in Pasadena.

11 Ulysses Athwen @ulysses_atwhen

Hegemony’s Arrow The Erie Canal is re-imagined as a contemporary cultural space for performance and dialogue in a project and performance that seeks to create community and cultural connections across the Empire State (NY) beginning with Buffalo to Medina. Interior and exterior spaces are connected through live audio/video feeds and audience engagement between an outdoor boat sculpture and the installation inside the school. Follow the path down the stairs to the left as you exit the classroom to the door which leads you outside to activate the installation from ground level!

Ulysses Atwhen (né d. Olivier Delrieu-Schulze) is a curator and multi-disciplinary artist. He holds a BA in Cultural and Interdisciplinary Studies from Antioch College and studied as a Dean’s Fellow in the Emerging Practices program at the University at Buffalo. His artworks have been shown at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Germany; MAP Baltimore, Maryland; Herdon Gallery, Ohio; and the Burchfield Penney, UB Art Galleries, Big Orbit Gallery and Squeaky Wheel in Buffalo. He has performed with Steina (Vasulka), Tony Conrad, Genesis P-Orridge, Reactionary Ensemble, and 404 Error, among others. He is the founding member of Trans Empire Canal Corporation (TECC), a Buffalo-based collective responsible for the Burchfield Penney’s multi-year project “Cultural Commodities: As Exhibition in Four Phases,” informally referred to as the “art barge.”

12 Keith Lemley @k_lemley

Symmetry Breaking This installation combines geometric objects with light and architecture. The artist references current scientific research that connects disparate parts of the universe through underlying geometry- his aim is that you will leave his installation thinking about everyday materials in new ways.

Keith Lemley received his MFA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, in 2010. Since then he has had solo exhibitions every year at venues including LMAKgallery (NYC); Mixed Greens (NYC); Urban Glass (Brooklyn, NY); 1708 Gallery (Richmond, VA); The Sculpture Center (Cleveland, OH); Redux Contemporary Art Center (Charleston, SC); The Soap Factory (Minneapolis, MN) and many more. Keith’s work has also been included in shows at the Museum of Modern Art (NYC); Family Business (NYC); Dowd Gallery (Cortland, NY); Trestle Gallery (Brooklyn, NY); Los Angeles Center for Digital Art (Los Angeles, CA) and more.

13 Marquis Burton + Tara Sasiadek @tenthousandpoetry @tarasasart

Wave and Shore This installation encourages participants to pause and take in fresh sensations, stretching time where we frequently rush through it, ignoring the world around us. By engaging a sense of wonder, the artists seek to provide a soothing environment for healing and reverie.

Tara Sasiadek is an artist, philosopher, and entrepreneur. She has studied philosophy, painting, and human development, and received her MFA in Visual Art from the Vermont College of Fine Arts. She is a founding member and past President of non-profit Emerging Leaders in the Arts Buffalo, and serves as Vice President to the Buffalo Society of Artists.

Marquis “Ten Thousand” Burton is a spoken word poet, educator and curator. Working with Shea’s Performing Arts, C.A.O. (Community Action Organization), Say Yes Buffalo and other non-profit and educational institutions, he has taught young writers to discover their voice through poetry while celebrating their stories for more than a decade. He has represented Buffalo in National Poetry Slams for the past decade and has been the official team coach for two years. Marquis has also held the position of Curator of Poetry Talent for Buffalo’s Music Is Art Festival for the past 6 years.

14 Sara Di Donato @saradeedo

If These Walls Could Talk Painted life-size images of girls from different eras are arranged in balancing acts and contortions, engaged in female-identified activities and rituals. They are caught at various thresholds—between youth/adulthood, innocence/experience, public/private, past/present. They exist in what Foucault calls a heterotopia—a space within or between spaces. This all takes place in the liminal space of the former bathroom, where for almost 100 years girls have learned the ropes of navigating the journey from girl to woman; a space still inhabited by the traces and residue of historical gender ideas. This installation makes clear that the performance of girlhood in the present is a reverberating echo of the past, yet constantly fluid and transforming.

Sara DiDonato was born in Naples, Italy, where her mother performed as a contortionist in a small traveling family circus. She received a BFA in Painting from the University of Iowa, and an MFA from the State University of New York at Albany in 2002. Her drawings and paintings have been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions nationally and regionally. Sara’s work has been reproduced in New American Paintings and in the Stone Canoe journal published by Syracuse University Press. She currently teaches painting and drawing at the State University of New York College at Brockport.

Beat Drop The pathway once traveled by countless students is transformed by an intriguing infusion of the unexpected. Curious forms, both foreign and somewhat familiar, placed in unexpected settings transforms the commonplace into the extraordinary and sparks the magic of imagination.

Lee Hoag is a multimedia artist whose current work focuses on found object assemblage sculpture. Born in Arizona, he received his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, and an MST from Rochester Institute of Technology. Currently living and working in Rochester, his work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including in Leipzig Germany, where Lee created a new work for Kopf 2000, an invitational exhibition at Freiluftgalerie Stotteritz outdoor sculpture park. Earlier this year, you may have experienced Lee’s work at Buffalo Arts Studio.

Cave of Crystals An immersive installation in the stairwell comprised of kinetic sculptures inspired by underground mineral caves. This project is focused around the transformation of matter, from its natural state to its streamlined variety of sub-products and makes apparent the exploitation and bastardization of a particular mineral: Gypsum. This installation continues the artist’s ongoing investigation of space, form, movement, time and thought, often in relationship to the human body.

Alicia Marván (Mexico/USA) is an artist and designer dedicated to contemporary and experimental practices. She has participated in over 100 art exhibitions and projects, many of which have received support from cultural organizations and academic institutions in Mexico, USA, Canada, Chile, Uruguay, Brasil, Portugal, Germany, Czech Republic, The Netherlands and South Africa. She is the founder and director of the Guapamacátaro Center for Art and Ecology in Michoacán, Mexico (guapamacataro.org).

Betwixt Obsessive, meditative, intuitive, and repetitive cuts form patterned passageways and shadows that invite the viewer to become part of a surreal space, allowing you to be seen and unseen in the same moment.

In this installation, the viewer is revealed and concealed at the same time, and for an instant you may become part of the in-between. The artist considers her creative act as “drawing with the blade”- her cuts in these large-scale words create a unique language animated by lights, shadows, and the movement of people.

Kari Achatz is an artist who lives and teaches in Buffalo. Kari holds a B.S in Art Education and a minor in Painting from Daemen College. She also holds a M.S in Art Education from SUNY Buffalo. Kari has been teaching visual arts since 2009, and currently teaches at Nichols School. Kari works primarily in photography, often hand cutting and layering her images, calling the finished works “photo sculpture.” She has exhibited throughout the WNY area including CEPA Gallery, Hallwalls, The Burchfield Penney, The Lipsey Architecture Center of Buffalo, and The Tower Gallery at Daemen College. Kari is in the collection of the Albright-Knox, as well as several private collections.

The Field The space invites interest and investigation, rewarding the viewer by allowing them to enter an environment that cultivates excitement and fantasy. This space is meant to entice the viewer’s curiosity, and “Welcome” them into a setting that is both familiar and fantastical. The installation directly responds to our surrounding environment using everyday experiences as a conceptual starting point. Often these are framed instances that would go unnoticed in their original context.

Colleen Toledano is a studio artist residing in Buffalo and an Associate Professor of Art at Buffalo State College. She holds an MFA in ceramics from Ohio University (2005). She was a recipient of the Evelyn Shapiro Foundation Fellowship in 2008 at The Clay Studio in Philadelphia, PA. and the 2005 Philip C. Curtis Artist-In-Residence in Ceramics at Albion College, Albion, Michigan. Her work has been exhibited in Winter Solstice IV (Westchester, NY), The Studio: An Alternative Space for Contemporary Art (Armonk, New York), The Clay Studio and the Mutter Museum (Philadelphia, PA), The Sculpture Center (Cleveland, OH), Kasia Kay Art Projects (Chicago, IL) The State Museum of Alaska (Juneau, AK) and many more. She has lectured widely and participated in residencies across the country.

Moonlight Text and image are brought together to broadcast the idea of moonlight as an idealized, celestial object.

The sculpture at the heart of the installation makes use of a carefully chosen vintage (1970’s) typeface, which is filled with a detailed photograph of the full moon. The conceptual loop at play in the logic of this installation is that sunlight reflecting off of the moon has been captured photographically and is now being broadcast once again; this time as moonlight reflecting on the water.

Adam David Brown is an interdisciplinary artist based in Toronto, Canada whose work is frequently generated by investigations into science, language, and the passage of time. He explains, “I am drawn to the idea that things begin to vanish at the moment that they appear.” He has exhibited his work in Canada, Europe, Central America and the United States and has been recognized

by The Canada Council of the Arts, The Ontario Arts Council, and the Toronto Arts Council. His work can be found in the collections of: The Art Gallery Of Ontario, Bell Canada, TD Bank, The Bank of Montreal, Cadillac Fairview, The Ivey School of Business, The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, Logitech, Ryerson University, as well as numerous private collections.

See Friday night performance schedule on pg. 2 Founded in 2003 in the historic Adam Mickiewicz Library and Dramatic Circle on the corner of Fillmore and Paderewski on Buffalo’s East Side, Torn Space Theater (TST) presents original performances, re-interpretations of classic works, site-specific works and WNY premieres of internationally recognized, contemporary drama. TST has emerged as the most prominent interdisciplinary theater company based in WNY, working with a cross-section of the community and local artists to create multimedia performances that draw material from the leading edge of the global avant-garde. Torn Space has garnered attention for hosting its annual RESPONSE: Performance Series, which brings internationally-renowned artists to present regional premieres of their work, and develop new projects with local collaborators that travel within and beyond WNY. FLATSITTER is a digital media and performance collective featuring Kyle Marler, based in Buffalo, Joshua Tree, CA, and Oaxaca City, Mexico. Derivative Process The auditorium projection booth provides the perfect setting as the artist creates an installation of enveloping shadows that interact with screen prints on a variety of surfaces, including plastic film, video projections, and the viewer. The imagery depicts the interwoven and interdependent relationships of economic and social systems, and serve as visual data maps to model the nature of networking networks.

Surrounded by the work, viewers become a focal point in the network model, drawing awareness to their own position and significance in these systems Born and raised in South Korea, Mizin Shin received her BFA in printmaking from Hongik University, and her MFA from the University at Buffalo. Currently a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Rochester, she is also a co-founder of Mirabo Press in Buffalo (@mirabopress.com). Additionally, Mizin has been the recipient of numerous awards, and her work has been selected for inclusion in many regional and national institutions across the United States, and can be found in a wide selection of public and private collections. Her work is currently featured in The Corridors Gallery at Hotel Henry: A Resource:Art Project (on the second floor stairwell of the hotel).

Abandon A dramatic sculptural installation depicts a shipwreck with the aim of giving the viewer an unmitigated view of disaster after it has already come and gone. Visitors are able to walk among the wreckage and see an ocean floor unimpeded by water and silt. This installation brings the viewer into contact with the unexpected and the fantastic.

Evan Hawkins was born in Richmond, VA. He studied printmaking at SUNY Buffalo (BFA) and pursued interdisciplinary studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (MFA). Most recently his work has been shown at Abel Contemporary Gallery in Belleville, WI, and Big Orbit Gallery. His work is included in various private and public collections including the Burchfield Penney, and the Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

24 Kristiina Lahde @kristiina_lahde

In The Fold Assembled together are 1000’s of delicately folded sheets of standard white paper, arranged in a grid entirely covering the walls; the various fold lines create a play between shadow and light that shifts between regularity and chance, creating an elegant, rhythmic, repetitive quality. The artist uses commonplace materials and objects to produce her work, obscuring their original functions through folding, cutting, and rearranging. In this classroom setting, the materials take on added significance as the weight of the history that exists within the space merges with materials used to create the installation.

Kristiina Lahde is an artist from Toronto, Canada. Her conceptual practice focuses on material investigation and process. She received her BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. In 2018, her solo exhibitions included In and Out of Order at OBORO in Montreal, Out of Line at MKG127, Toronto, Unfolding at the Art Gallery of Hamilton, and in 2019 Extraordinary Measures at the University of Waterloo Art Gallery. Her works are held in several private and public collections including the Canada Council Art Bank.

The Artist’s Dream An environment that simulates the experience of being in a dream, wherein things seem real, but not right.

Viewers are inside a tangible dream. To enhance the dreamlike atmosphere, the room does not conform to physical reality. The classroom is a modified Ames room, which distorts perspective, so people seem to grow or shrink as they move from one side to another.

Bruce Adams is best known as a conceptually based figurative painter who works in various figurative painting styles. In exploring painting, Bruce peels back the layers of meaning inherent in making and viewing art. Formally trained in art education at Buffalo State College, Bruce extended his education as an artist through his involvement in Western New York’s contemporary art scene. Bruce’s work also includes installation and performance art, and he has years of experience as an art educator, and more recently as an award-winning critical writer. He has exhibited extensively locally and nationally, and his work is included in numerous private and museum collections including the Albright-Knox, Castellani Museum, UB Anderson Gallery, and Burchfield-Penney.

26 William Quintana + Christa Trautman @artplaygroundny

Into the Void Here is an opportunity to return to a child’s world of wonder. Imagine opening a door only to encounter a totally new experience; something that is not what you expect when you leave the familiarity of the school hallway. A set of six telescoping, brightly colored boxes replace the traditional four walls. The bright hues are meant to entice users to explore the space further and immerse themselves in the unknown well of color.

William Quintana and Christa Trautman have been collaborating on projects of various scale since 2014. Each holds a Masters of Architecture from the University at Buffalo, and together they bring a strong ability to conceptualize and implement projects from conception to construction. They are interested in using everyday construction materials and methods to create elements of wonder and surprise in everyday life.

PLAY/GROUND Gallery & Lounge A major mission of Resource:Art is to support living regional artists through the exhibition and sale of their work. Nearly all of the artists who created installations for PLAY/GROUND also have a fine art practice.

Rolling Thunder

Rolling Thunder is a performative installation featuring sculptures that are animated by skateboarders. The sounds and energy of skateboarders thrashing about the room are a complement to the boldly painted ramps and other aesthetic elements which fill the space.

28 Jozef Bajus @bajus.jozef

Rays of Light Repurposed slides filled with captured images of unknown places and times, strung in ray-like strands dramatically envelope the classroom space and serve as a metaphor for our collective memories. “Our memory is our coherence, our reason, our feeling, even our action”(Luis Bunuel).

Jozef Bajus is an award-winning mixed media artist. Originally, from Slovakia, Bajus received his MFA from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design, (AFAD), Bratislava, Slovakia (1985). During 1990 - 2001 he was Head of Fibers Program at AFAD and since 1990 he has held positions of visiting scholar, instructor, and coordinator at various colleges and programs in the United States and abroad Currently, Bajus is an Associate Professor at SUNY Buffalo State College, and serves as the Coordinator of the Fibers/Design Program.

His career has earned him numerous prestigious awards and recognition. Recently he has been the recipient of the Burchfield Penney’s Langley H. Kenzie Award. Bajus’ work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions, nationally and internationally, and is in many public collections. His artwork is also included in private collections in Europe, North America, Japan, and China.

29 Amanda Besl @amandabesl

Persephone An ethereal forgotten greenhouse suggests the simultaneous quality of a space separated by time in which some lives are misplaced while others flourish. A physical descent past cryptic botanical ghosts that peer through steamy Wardian cases leads you to an abandoned glasshouse glowing from withina variable TARDIS, out of place yet somehow familiar. Nature left to nature’s own devices, but trapped within a sheltering and suffocating space. Are the contents languishing within or bursting to escape their confines? Could a mirror absorb and store what it sees replaying the scene internally? Could every face that ever looked in be simultaneously looking back? This installation is a nod to the Victorian obsessions of collection and control as nature’s wonder becomes tangled in a warp of lore and weft of biological science.

Amanda Besl’s main studio practice is focused on painting and drawing. She has shown widely in both WNY and New York City, and in Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and Russia. Amanda holds an MFA in Painting from the Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from SUNY Oswego. Her work is part of several notable private and public collections including the Burchfield Penney; Nichido Contemporary, Tokyo, Japan; the Burger Collection, Hong Kong and the Tullman Collection, Chicago. Amanda works in the Arts Department at Nichols School in Buffalo as an Upper School Visual Arts teacher. She finds inspiration in the plants she obsessively tends, which provide props for her seemingly languid and slightly insidious still life worlds.

Rolling Thunder Rolling Thunder is a performative installation featuring sculptures that are animated by skateboarders. The sounds and energy of skateboarders thrashing about the room are a complement to the boldly painted ramps and other aesthetic elements which fill the space. Much of the visual art found on the chalkboards and walls reference the science, attitude, and ‘surfer-vibes’ of skating culture. This installation can be experienced in two ways: viewers can watch live skateboarding performance (see schedule in the center spread) from demarcated zones in the installation and you will be welcome to explore and touch the sculptures during non-skating times.

Tom Holt is an illustrator from Carmel, NY. Living and working in Buffalo, Tom’s life revolves around skateboarding, his cat, video games, and other influences that find their way into his creative practice. While well on his way to completing more than 100,000 drawings, Tom is not afraid to explore and tackle other mediums like spray painting and site-specific installation. He is a co-owner of the Pine Apple Co in Buffalo’s Allentown neighborhood (@pineapplco).

Quincy Koczka is an artist, designer, builder, and lifelong skateboarder from Buffalo. With a background in architecture and a passion for woodworking, he spends his time turning bowls, building small models, and playing around with pieces of trim work. If he’s not in the wood shop, he’s likely to be found riding his board at a local skatepark.

31 Bethany Krull @bethanykrullsculpture

The Canary is Long Dead Within the mysterious confines of a janitor’s closet, the artist creates an urgent call for action. Cataclysmic effects of climate change and related events are devastating. The poignant tableau asks, “do we possess the boldness and ingenuity to act with the required urgency, or will our fate follow that of the canary.”

Bethany Krull is a Buffalo-based sculptor whose porcelain and mixed media animal sculptures aim to illustrate the complex and often complicated relationship humans maintain with the rest of the natural world. She received her MFA from the School for American Crafts at RIT, and went on to numerous residencies, including Genesse Pottery, The Armory Art Center, Goggleworks Center for the Arts, and the Archie Bray Foundation. Her work has been included in many regional, national, and international exhibitions, and is included in numerous prestigious public and private collections. Bethany is the artist responsible for the incredible alligator installation at the foot of the stairwell in PLAY/GROUND 2018.

Undulation The Zen garden-like installation exists as a carefully composed arrangement of objects within a physical space, intending to encourage a meditative state. An escape from the frenzy that often surrounds us.

Born and raised in Medina proper, Kathryn is an accomplished artist, teacher entrepreneur, and world traveler. She is CEO and founder of Modern Minders Creative Childcare and Staffing, a company which strategically places private educators and creative candidates with families in New York, Los Angeles, and abroad. Kathryn received her BFA from Buffalo State College, and a Masters in Secondary Education from North Arizona University. Her work has been featured on CSI New York, and included in exhibitions at the Burchfield Penney, and Go Art Orleans County.

33 Michael Bosworth @aesthetocrat

Newton’s Clock The elements of a pinball machine are deconstructed and exaggerated to create a series of interactive works. The viewer is invited to engage with the installation-- you are the one who will initiate a mechanism that is designed to keep a ball in motion as long as possible. The act of playing pinball is connected with the human struggle against time in this multi-dimensional installation.

Michael Bosworth is an artist and educator based in Buffalo. Currently a professor at Villa Maria College, Michael received his MFA in photography from the University of New Mexico, a BFA in Art and a BA in English from the University at Buffalo. His work has been exhibited widely in WNY and beyond including in The Other New York Biennial (Syracuse, NY), Beyond/In WNY (Buffalo, NY), Amid/ In WNY (Buffalo, NY), and at Sean Kelly Gallery (New York, NY), Hallwalls, the Burchfield-Penney, Visual Studies Workshop, Big Orbit Gallery, CEPA Gallery, and the Albright-Knox.
