CREATIVE WAYS TO SUPPORT CULTURE IN OUR CITY GIFTING HIGHLY APPRECIATED SECURITIES If you have stocks, bonds, or mutual funds that have increased in value from the time of purchase, why not donate these appreciated securities directly to the Hallwalls endowment? As a donor, you can avoid paying capital gains tax on the appreciation, and you may even be able to take a tax deduction for the donation. As a non-profit organization, Hallwalls can accept these gifted securities at their full market value without being subject to taxation, thus maximizing your gift. It’s a win for everyone! As always, be sure to consult your tax advisor for individualized tax advice.

QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTION If you are age 72 or older, the IRS requires that you take annual withdrawals called Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) from your tax-deferred retirement accounts. These withdrawals count towards your taxable income, which can push you in to a higher tax bracket or even reduce your eligibility for certain credits and deductions. When planning your IRA withdrawal strategy with your financial advisor, you may want to instead consider gifting all or a portion of your RMD by making a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) to Hallwalls. Thanks to the QCD provision in the Internal Revenue Code, you can transfer funds (up to $100,000) directly to Hallwalls from your IRA, thus excluding the funds from your taxable income entirely. Again – everybody’s situation is a little bit different, so be sure to consult a tax/financial professional.

CORPORATE MATCHING GIFTS Does your employer offer a “gift matching” program of any kind? Many corporations are encouraging their employees to contribute to the causes they care about by offering to “match” gifts up to a certain dollar amount. If you are already making donations to Hallwalls, it’s worth having a conversation with your employer to see if they offer a match of any kind. If so, your gift will have an even greater impact to Hallwalls, and your employer will likely receive a tax incentive for their donation. If your company doesn’t have a gift matching program – who knows? Maybe your conversation will inspire them to start one!

HALLLWALLS STOCK GIFTING INSTRUCTIONS You can make a gift directly from your portfolio in just three simple steps: 1) Please alert Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center that you will be making a gift by transferring stock via email (Emily@Hallwalls.org) or phone (716-553-8483) This is an important step as your stock gift will arrive in our account without identification. Please include a mailing address so that we may send you an acknowledgment letter.

2) You or your broker can then electronically transfer your gift of stock directly to the Hallwalls Inc account at Fidelity Investments: DTC#: 0226 to Hallwalls Inc - Account Number: 646-572560 Fidelity Investments C/O Landmark Wealth Management 2410 North Forest Road, Suite 101 Getzville, NY 14068 3) Once your gift is processed, a tax receipt will be mailed stating the name of the stock(s), the number of shares, and the date it was received by Hallwalls Inc. Your tax advisor can determine the value of the gift for tax deduction purposes.
