The Edward: Partnership Proposal

PARTNER OVERVIEW Resource:Art (R:A) is a unique partnership that brings together the talents of two independent WNY gallerists, Elisabeth Samuels and Emily Tucker whose most recent collaboration is Raft Of Sanity, a new gallery space which opened in September. Samuels, & Tucker each have extensive curatorial experience and professional relationships with artists working in a wide range of media, including painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, fiber, and mixed media works.

Resource:Art also manages the execution of site-specific fine art and considers every project as a unique collaboration between the artist and the site, navigating aesthetic, formal, and functional concerns.

Emily Tucker Principal of Resource:Art (R:A), grew up in the art gallery her parents founded in 1970. After spending years working in the financial world of New York City, Tucker took a job at Macklowe Gallery on Madison Avenue. In 2010, at her parent’s request, Tucker returned home to Buffalo take over the family business.

She has used her vast and varied experiences in New York to expand the family business to an international market.

In addition to her work with Benjaman Gallery, Tucker was a founder of the fine art consultancy Resource:Art with the mission to take art out of the white box gallery and into public spaces. R:A maintains a contemporary gallery space on Niagara Street in Buffalo, NY with a pop up location in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

R:A also does a variety of public art including a large-scale juried art installation event, PLAY/GROUND, which draws thousands of visitors and supports the work of over 30 artists each year.

Tucker serves on the Erie County Arts & Cultural Advisory Board, and the board of The Buffalo Center for Arts & Technology, where she is chair of special events.

ELISABETH SAMUELS PRINCIPAL-IN-CHARGE

Elisabeth Samuels is a director/curator, painter, educator, and currently Co Director/ Curator at Raft of Sanity, which maintains a brick and mortar gallery space on Niagara Street, and a pop up location in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

In addition, Samuels is a founding Principle at Resource: Art, a fine art consultancy whose mission is to take art out of the white box and into public spaces. R:A projects include initiating exhibition programs in unexpected venues, utilizing the power of art in support of community, & creating Play/Ground, an expansive, immersive juried art event which has included international artists and thousands of viewers.

Born in Chicago, she received an undergraduate degree from Indiana University, studied at The Art Institute of Chicago, and the UNC program Figline, Valdarno, Italy. She received an MA in Art Education and an MFA in Painting from the University of Wisconsin Madison.

Elisabeth moved to Buffalo in the mid 80’s, and has since been involved in a wide variety of efforts, galleries and projects aimed at connecting artists, community, and collectors..

PARTNER OVERVIEW Dome Art Advisory is an art consulting firm started by Brooke Leboeuf.

She took her first trip to Paris with her late father Michael, where they visited the Dôme Cafe, a famous haunt of writers, artists and expats of the 1920’s including Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway uses Dôme as a setting in his seminal work The Sun Also Rises.

Both a favorite author and favorite book of Michael’s, Dôme seemed a fitting tribute to him and his love of reading, travel, history and the entrepreneurial spirit. Michael started his own real estate company when he was the same age, inspiring her to create this company.

BROOKE LEBOEUF DIRECTOR

EDUCATION

Before starting Dôme, Brooke was the Art Director for K Art, an art space focusing on Native American contemporary art. Prior to that she was a consultant for Rich Products Corporate Art Collection.

She has worked as the manager of two privately held art collections in Buffalo, New York: each collection held over 400 works.

She has worked at the Albright-Knox Gallery as the Project Coordinator for the multi-venue arts exhibition, Beyond/ In WNY 2010 and as the visual arts curator for Buffalo Arts Studio.

Brooke has a BA in Art History from Hobart and William Smith Colleges, and an MA in Art History from The University at Buffalo with a certification in Museum Studies.

She did an extensive study abroad with New York University’s Gallatin School, in Florence Italy, which focused on Italian Renaissance art, architecture and literature. Brooke has interned at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center, Buffalo, NY and UB’s Anderson Gallery, Buffalo, NY

PARTNER RECOMMENDATION AND FEE STRUCTURE

The Edward: A Contemporary Gallery and Historical Archive As an alternative to Art Alley our suggestion would be to name the space The Edward: A Contemporary Gallery and Historical Archive. This is an homage to Edward J. Barcalo, the original founder and chairman of the Barcalo Manufacturing Company. There is an existing space in Niagara Falls called Art Alley with a collection of murals created by regional artists.

Recommendation Within the long corridor space, a specific central area is designated for the contemporary gallery. This area should be treated with drywall on either side. We feel strongly that the level of contemporary art we would curate and exhibit in this space should not have to compete with the architectural elements. Instead, designated areas on either end of the space, surrounding the central gallery, should remain raw. A permanent exhibition about the history of the space, neighborhood, and region could be created and installed on one end, while the other end holds a site specific piece created by an artist for the unique surroundings. This installation could be permanent, or a budget could be established to change the installation up to three times per year to coincide with the changing exhibitions.

Our team would curate, organize, and install three unique exhibitions per year with a fee (described below) for each show. Included in that charge would be all the elements of a world class contemporary gallery, including delivery, installation, signage, vinyl, public relation services, and a social media and web presence. We would discount our curatorial work by 50% with the consideration that sales may be possible. This fee could be renegotiated after the first year. We would activate the space with exhibition openings, artist talks, and other community engagement initiatives throughout the year.

Fee and Cost Structure The hard costs and curatorial fees would not exceed $3,900.00 per exhibition, and would be due two weeks prior to installation. This fee is for 3 art consultants who usually charge $100 per hour each for their time and expertise. We are anxious to work together on this project, and are willing to do so at a reduced rate and offer free services.

DISCOVER NIAGARA BENCH PROJECT NIAGARA FALLS NATIONAL HERITAGE ASSOCIATION, NIAGARA FALLS, NY

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Resource:Art (R:A) was hired by the Niagara Falls National Heritage Association (NFNHA) to manage the proposal process for an arts bench along its tDiscover Niagara Shuttle route. R:A invited 4 artists to create proposals for the initial bench, and helped select the final artist Ellen Steinfeld. Plans for additional benches with a public call for work were placed on hold at the onset of the pandemic.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Inside the vast expanses of the second floor of The Hotel Henry, Resource:Art has launched and maintains a rotating exhibitions. Each quarter a group of 6 or more artists have a chance to hang their work inside this unique space.

Often artists actually create work specifically for the unique spaces of the Hotel.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Inspired by musicians in Italy performing impromptu concerts from their balconies, reinforcing the knowledge that art brings joy and engagement, Resource:Art reinterpreted the experience to suit the Buffalo community.

A curated collection of 22 artists created extraordinary installations in the windows, porches and front yards of their homes to provide a safe distancing opportunity for the community to feel connected.Viewable for 1 week, people were invited to walk or drive by these unique art interventions.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION A large scale curated pop up event, creating an immersive art experience providing engaging art installations meant to inspire the whole family.

Drawing thousands of people over 3 days, Play/Ground transformed an historic former school building in Medina, NY. More than 30 artists from Western NY, Chicago, and Toronto, filled school rooms, hallways and outdoor spaces with art installations, live music, performance, theater and childrens activities.

THE CHECK IS IN THE MAIL ABC- AMEGA / Buffalo, NY PROJECT DESCRIPTION This commissioned piece was created specifically to have a unique and direct connection to the firm, which specializes in credit to cash solutions.

After our consultation with the client, Jozef Bajus created an extraordinary installation that not only provides opportunity for visual engagement in a corporate setting, but also involved the firms employees as they collected discarded junk mail that was then used by the artist to create the arched bands, entitled “ The Check Is In The Mail”.

SITE SPECIFIC INSTALLATIONS PATINA 250/ Buffalo, NY PROJECT DESCRIPTION Addressing the clients need to create unique and visually arresting statements, on both the exterior of the building, as well as the elegant interior space,Resource:Art worked with artists Sarah Fonzi and Fotini Galanes to develop plans resulting in the installation of a large scale sculptural facade, and an intricately rendered wall mural specifically commissioned for each setting.

In addition existing work by artists Jozef Bajus and Ani Hoover were selected to add to the visual experience.
