Fata Morgana:
a type of mirage, that produces multiple overlapping images that actively change and distort creating the deceptive appearance of distant objects.

The work that I have been developing over the last twenty-seven years has been primarily concerned with issues and ideas that surround and make up the contemporary city. One of my central activities is exploring different ways and means to transform a viewer’s perception of “place” using forms of architecture, forms of storytelling, forms of mapping or all or any of the above.
Fata Morgana is a new body of work about Vancouver that is inspired by Cedric Price, a British architect, particularly his notion of movement in architecture, despite the contradiction of immobility of built forms. His visionary thinking contributed to the development of new philosophies about architecture, time, and space within the city and influenced many young architects.
I have had long term fascinated with the notion of movement in a fixed structure. I have used collage’s characteristics of disruption and distortion to confuse the positive and negative space within the picture plane to try and create optical movement. This exhibition brings together 10 years of my studio practice and my observations of the city. These works are informed by my daily observations of the urban form, and how spaces and places interpolate as one moves through them, where points of views are constantly shifting and revealing new perspectives.
