From the Editor Dearest Readers (I feel like Lady Whistledown!!), What a strange month it has been and, as predicted, busy! As you all know, I stay out of all things political in here both nationally and locally – point of principle - but just sometimes, I have to shake my head publicly and then go back to try and deal with, like most of you I’m sure, the worsening cost of living crisis, rising costs of food, heating etc, nevermind the costs of trying to run a business! Our 5th paper price increase of the year has landed this month – it’ll be a strange month when we don’t get one! And what is being done to help the – you know – constituents?? Still, onwards we trundle in our daily lives and let’s hope that the powers that be in whatever capacity, notice the cliff edge before we drive over it at full pelt! Anyway, speaking of being ‘shaken down’ on the way in and the way out – we went to Centre Parcs for the previously mentioned Cousins ‘Sten do’ (stag and hen do – Sten is the nicer version!) and jeez, I felt like a fatted calf being shuffled from one financial pilfering zone to another!! Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate that it works brilliantly from some people. However, I’m not sure it’s for me anymore. For example, nobody can come as a day visitor anymore (so all the people who were part of the wedding brigade could not obtain a day pass – it’s a thing of the past since covid apparently!) and if you left the site (which you could do freely btw), crikey me, if you came back in, well, I haven’t felt like that since a check point in Egypt (only missing the sub machine gun!), your answers had to be swift, accurate, personal and without hesitation! I mean, it wouldn’t be so bad if I hadn’t seen that particular ‘gatekeeper’ 4 times that day alone.

Also – and this one has really stuck in my gullet – I sold a kidney to obtain a 3hr spa session in the evening which began at 6pm. Obviously, when you can’t get in your villa until 4pm, you have a mad dash to get your car, follow the snaking line of cars to get somewhere near your villa, unload and drive your car back to the car park, then collect your bike and head over to the Spa. I can’t think why but I had Benny Hill music in my head during that particular event #stressful…..you need a spa after that ordeal! Anyhow, you get chucked out at 9pm, get out your wet gear, walk into the centre cos you’re hungry, only to find that everywhere stops seating people at 9pm, you can’t get a takeaway from the 17 items (yes I counted) takeaway list because you should have booked a slot in the afternoon, the supermarket is not open to sort yourself out AND you obvs can’t get a Deliveroo or just eat or anything external because ‘you shall not pass!’ I haven’t been told what time to go to bed since I was a kid and even that was negotiable – ask my parents! Anyway, because of various other disasters before we left home - egg and cheese omelette with a slice a bread it was #rocknroll. Ultimately, a fun time was had by all ….. until 4 days before the wedding and I’m on crutches!!!! See you all next time,

Our Oceans are in Danger When you look at a satellite image of our planet, you may wonder - as I do - why we have named it Earth, given that the vast majority of the surface is covered by water. Any extra-terrestrial flying past could be forgiven for thinking that the beautiful green and blue globe below them was a water world. Planet Earth is 71% covered by oceans, and it was in these very oceans that, until recently, scientists believe life itself developed. However, newer research suggests that the first single cell organisms developed in “muddy pools” on land and not in the depth of the primordial oceans. The scientific debate is still open, and no doubt will switch back and forth between muddy puddles and the ocean depths as the origin of life, but one thing does seem clear - water was necessary for life on this planet to begin. Sadly, given the very clear indications that water, and thus the oceans that cover the planet, are vital to life’s existence, we humans have done a pretty poor job of looking after our rivers and seas. We’ve overfished, hunted and killed our close cousins, the whales, to dangerous levels, and allowed pollution to enter the oceans, seas and waterways of the world. A quick internet search revealed that there are thought to be 5.25 TRILLION pieces of plastic rubbish currently polluting our oceans. 269,000 tons float on the surface, while some four billion plastic microfibres per km2 litter the deep sea. I hadn’t even heard of plastic microfibres, so had to look that up too…they are described as very small thread-like fibres that can come from both natural and synthetic fabrics. By 2050, ocean plastic will outweigh all of the ocean’s fish! These plastics can have a massive impact on life in the seas; fish and other sea life can ingest them, causing digestion problems which pass up the food chain and

ultimately to us - and that’s before factoring in chemical and heavy metal pollution. The floating debris blocks out the sunlight, which prevents light from reaching corals and plant life, thus inhibiting their growth. Statistics show that as much as 27 per cent of monitored reef formations have been lost, and as much as 32 per cent are at risk of being lost within the next 32 years. Sitting in our inland homes, it is very difficult to see how we can do anything to improve this dire situation - it feels like anything we do try will be a mere “drop in the ocean”, but it shouldn’t stop us from trying to do our part should it? There are some steps we can all take… • Reduce your use of single-use plastics • Support legislation to curb plastic production and waste • Recycle properly • Avoid products containing microbeads (found in some household and beauty products) We only have one planet, we need to look after all of it - including the oceans, seas and rivers.

All Around the Shire Recollections of a Simpler Time

During our reminiscence sessions, these are always the items which are guaranteed to produce a grimace and a chorus of “Oooh, I remember using Izal” followed by floods of memories of freezing cold outside privies, newspaper on string and the dreaded slippery toilet paper. In theory, there was a rough side and a smooth side but, either way, it didn’t do the job. Outside toilets could be either shared with other families or one per household. It was my dad’s job, as a small boy, to cut up newspaper into rectangles and hang on a big nail on the door of the outside loo.

Post-war sanitation meant that new houses began to have indoor plumbing fitted as standard and the problem with trying to flush newspaper was that there were continual blockages. Thank goodness for the arrival of soft toilet paper which appeared in our shops in 1942. However, the high cost meant that many homes could not afford the luxury until the 1960s or 70s. Our reliance on soft toilet paper today is evidenced by panic buying at the beginning of lockdown during the recent pandemic.

This is one occasion I don’t yearn for days My husband has a story which originated from his relatives in gone by when we had to manage with shiny the North East but is replicated in families up and down the medicated toilet paper or when newsprint was country. It goes like this: the latch didn’t work very well on the outside toilet, so you had to sing hymns to let people know imprinted on bottoms. the toilet was occupied. If it was a quick job, it was “Onward Christian Soldiers”, if it was a bit longer, it was “Fight the Good Fight” and if it was a long job, it was” Through the Night of Doubt and Sorrow”. Kazuo Ishiguro often uses an outsider’s view to look at how human beings live and love. He did it with the unforgettable Never Let Me Go and he’s got it bang to rights again with his latest novel the Klara and the Sun. Klara is an Artificial Friend – an AI created to be a companion for lonely children. Which means she has to learn first-hand what motivates humans, how they behave towards each other and what their faults and joys are. The Sun powers Klara, but is also a God-like figure with the power to change lives. This probably sounds like a sci-fi approach – and in a way it is. But it asks questions about how our species is going to deal with the new inventions and systems we are creating. But that’s only part of the story. Ishiguro has previously won the Nobel Prize for Literature and the Booker and this book returns again to his ongoing exploration of what it means to exist as people with emotions thoughts and memories. Given all that - which sounds very serious - it’s quite entrancing, very engaging and a really easy read. And it stays with you long after you have finished reading it. For this reader always one of the marks of a good book.

DAD’S ARMY IN THE NAPOLEONIC ERA PART TWO

A Prototype Dad’s Army As with many part-time soldiers, it is easy to be disparaging about troops that see no action. So, there’s a strong tradition of ridiculing these wouldbe soldiers, the original Dad’s Army, if you like. They signed an agreement like any other conscripted soldier – a rare 1803 volunteers’ paper isn’t something you see too often. There were certainly comical elements to their history. They were often satirised in contemporary prints about their heightened concern with their uniforms and distinctly un-martial qualities. The Loyal Hackney Volunteers’ uniform included a bearskin hat with a feather, and bespoke buttons inscribed with “Loyal Hackney Volunteers”. Volunteers chose more expensive cloth and colours for their coats too – the Sussex Yeomanry selected a dark green jacket with black velvet collar and cuffs. There’s good evidence in local archives for the Volunteers spending a lot of time, and money, on their uniforms. An example comes from Carlisle record office, concerning an officer who had been rather ambitious with the measurements for his uniform breeches and had to send them back as they were too tight for him to wear.

There uniforms were their pride! In the absence of an overt military role – they were waiting for an invasion that in the end never occurred – other ways were sought to define themselves as soldiers and distinguish them from the civilian population. Their outward appearance, at least for a few days a year, and public display in uniform became the means to do this. Outside of the big garrisons in London, Edinburgh, and Dublin, parades were rare before the 1790s, but this changed during the war. After 1815 these part-time soldiers were not needed anymore, and units were disbanded. Gradually they passed from an ever-present component of British life into obscurity. The relief at the ending of the wars in 1815, and the public celebrations and memorials focusing on the great battles of the conflict, meant that the Volunteers were largely ignored.

Pinxton & South Normanton History Group PINXTON WHARF - PART TWO LY 1900 PINXTON WHARF EAR

Pinxton Wharf can rightly claim to be the first area in the village to become industrialised. Likewise, The Reverend D’ Ewes Coke can claim to be the architect for establishing Pinxton as an industrial community. All his predecessors would claim to have been ‘landed gentry’. D’ Ewes Coke was born in 1747. His most informative years would have been those when the country was rapidly changing from largely being an agricultural society into an industrial one. Today, Pinxton has no major roadway outlet to its west; unlike in the past when it had both canal and rail. With the end of the mining industry, Pinxton Wharf is reverting to its original state. Although there are plans to re-establish the line of the canal, this will be for leisure and tourism purposes. Although deep shafts had been sunk in several areas in the Parish before 1788, the first of Pinxton’s deep mines was Sleights No. 1 pit. It was a major undertaking in its day. Because mining in PInxton had primarily been a part-time occupation, No. 1 shaft was sunk at the same time as twenty cottages (Meadow Row and Nether Meadow Row) to house experienced incoming mineworkers. Building dwelling

properties for keyworkers associated with the development of a business park or similar, is regarded as a modern phenomenon. Reverend Coke repeat this action a few years later with the building of the Pinxton Porcelain manufactory. This was built in between November 1795 and April 1796, to house the experienced and skilled ceramics workforce required for the specialisms required to make and decorate porcelain at that time. The factory building was built with four cottages attached to each end of the building for workmen transferring from the Derby porcelain factory. Revered Coke’s first mining venture was the sinking of a mine shaft with the Hodgkinson brothers, who were experienced mining engineers. This was located about forty metres south of Wharf Road, at its junction with Pool Close. It is the first documented account of a steam engine being worked in Pinxton. It was essential to pump water from a sump excavated in the shaft bottom, to keep the workings dry. The opening of the Pinxton Arm of the Cromford Canal in April 1795 resulted in many other new industrial and commercial activities. These included, lime burning, hostelry, warehousing and the celebrated Pinxton porcelain manufactory. The Pinxton factory has been aptly described as ‘one of the most important happenings in the history of British ceramics. It provided an opportunity to the celebrated William Billingsley to make porcelain paste to his own recipe. Billingsley is also regarded as one of the most outstanding decorators of floral patterns, and English landscapes. He was also an exceptionally skilled gilder. Pinxton Wharf’s decline started with the closure of the canal which was hastened by advances made in rail traffic.

W E I V ' A 'C I’ve just finished watching the World Snooker Championship. The greatest player of all time, Ronnie O’Sullivan has won the title for the seventh time so far. He is, without doubt, a genius in his field. It got me thinking. What is the hardest thing to achieve in sports/games? I’m thinking of accessible games. Things that any of us can contemplate doing. So, what is the most impressive of these three? A hole in one playing golf? A 9-dart finish? A 147 maximum on the snooker table? Golf is the most frustrating of games. The little white ball sits stock still, smirking at you... mocking you... defying you. You have 14 clubs from which to select and none of them really want to emerge from the bag fearing embarrassment. But, standing at the tee on a par 3 (if you’re Rob Green or Gary Bennett) a par 4 then one club reluctantly emerges with the aim of hitting the little white ball into the tiny hole around 300 metres away. Does anyone ever aim for hole, or do they aim for the green hoping to get close enough to score a two or a three? I don’t know for sure. When you stand in a pub and ask for the darts from behind the bar, what are your expectations? Do you expect to hit the board? I know some who can’t. Did anyone else go to a party at Sue and Paul Chambers’ house about 3 years ago? They are still waiting to have their wall replastered. Do you expect to hit a treble 20 or even a 180?

What is the most difficult?

Most of us have tried our hand at pool in the pub, but how many have ventured into the snooker hall? Compared to a pool table, a snooker table looks like a football pitch.The baulk line and the black spot could be in different time zones. Trying to pot a ball which is close to 12 feet away looks, on the face of it, close to impossible. So, to pot 36 balls on the spin in the right sequence takes something special.

My conclusion Let’s start with a statement of fact. I LOVE sports but have precious little practical ability. I’ve had the odd throw at a dart board. The dart board doesn’t move. The throwing distance doesn’t change. There’s no weather to deal with and I once hit a 180!! I’ve tried playing golf too, over many years, but I have never hit a hole in one. My nearest would have been about two feet from the hole. However, I know quite a few people who have. I’ve also, on occasion, attempted snooker. My best ever break, some years ago, would have been mid30s. That’s not much to go on...but it helps with my conclusion. Hole in 1? 5% skill.... 95% luck 9 dart finish? 100% skill.... 0% luck 147 in snooker....100% skill... 0% luck. But the skill required is SO much greater. So, a 147 is hardest in my opinion. What’s yours?

5-MILE CIRCULAR WALK FROM HOMESFORD TEA ROOMS, ON THE A6 NEAR WHATSTANDWELL

This month we welcome a new recruit to our walking Pantheon, Say Hello to Bailey (affectionately known as Bailey Boo) who has volunteered his Mum and Dad to re-walk this classic walk. The walk starts and ends at Homesford Tea Rooms at Whatstandwell, which is a fantastic place for a bite to eat. It looks like Bailey and his family had a great time. A lovely walk for you and your dog! This walk is fairly flat and should take around 2-2½ hours to complete. There is a range of terrain, with some muddy, uneven sections, which may be slightly overgrown. There are also a few sections of road, so take plenty of care and make sure you wear appropriate footwear.

START: HOMESTEAD TEA ROOMS A6, WHATSTANDWELL, DE4 5HJ 1.

Standing with your back to the Tea Rooms, turn right along the main road. After passing a 50 MPH sign and just prior to a sign board reading ‘Conservation Crafts’ turn sharp left and back on yourself to join a signposted footpath going gently uphill.

Follow the path with a dry stone wall on either side. After a short distance pass by some houses on your left and then continue straight ahead to enter some woodland. Continue for some distance and then the path bears to the right. Now follow the path with a dry stone wall on either side until reaching a road.

Turn right and continue along the road for a short distance. Then turn left to cross over a stile which is set back a bit into some woodland and continue along a footpath going uphill. After some distance pass through a gap in a stone wall. Ignore the path on your right named Kings Lot path going steep uphill and continue straight ahead for a short distance to cross over a stile.

Continue along the path staying close to the edge of the woodland and keeping a dry stone wall on your left. After some distance cross over another stile and stay close to edge of the woodland with a dry stone wall on your left. Continue for some distance until coming out of the woodland, passing through a large wooden gate and onto a lane.

Turn right along the lane heading uphill. Continue for some distance until passing ‘Yew Tree Cottage’ on your right. Shortly after, the lane splits into two. Take the right fork and then after a very short distance bear right again to pass to the right of a stone carved with the name ‘Watfield Farm’.

Continue steep uphill, pass over a stile and then through a metal gate. Shortly after pass over a third stile and into some woodland.

Continue straight ahead with a wall on your right and eventually pass through a gap. Continue straight ahead for a short distance and then begin to descend sharply. On the way down the hill pass through two more gaps and then into an open field.

Cross the open field, pass through a gap and onto a road. Cross straight over the road and continue straight along a lane sign posted ‘Bridleway’. Continue along the lane for some distance and then pass through a metal gate. Continue straight ahead for some distance and pass through a second metal gate.

Continue straight ahead until reaching a T junction. Turn right and immediately pass through a metal gate. Continue for a short distance and then follow the path around to the left. Continue for some distance until reaching a finger board sign. Bear left and uphill following the sign for ‘High Peak Trail’.

After a short distance ignore the path bearing left and steep uphill and bear slightly right passing by a wooden bench on your right. After a very short distance turn sharp right onto a trail sign posted for ‘High Peak Junction’. Continue for some distance going downhill until passing through a tunnel underneath a road.

After a short distance pass a railway carriage on your right and then continue with a canal on your left. Continue straight ahead until passing ‘The Wharf Shed’ on your left and then after a short distance turn left onto a footpath sign posted for ‘Ambergate’.

12.

Continue straight along a footpath with a canal on your left. Eventually pass over a railway bridge and then continue with the canal on your left for some distance until reaching a tunnel. Just prior to reaching the tunnel turn right onto a footpath sign posted for ‘Homestead Cottage A6’.

13.

Continue through some trees for some distance and then turn right to cross over a river bridge. Continue to pass through a tunnel underneath a railway line and then continue to follow a tarmac lane back to a main road.

14.

Turn right along the main road back to the tea rooms.

Rabbits require large amounts of space with grazing areas, access to outdoors and dry, well ventilated indoor areas meaning the usual hutches you can get from stores are usually not appropriate. Playhouses, sheds or even aviaries can be converted to be much more suitable accommodation for your bunnies. Rabbits need to be exposed to natural light to prevent vitamin D deficiency, so supplements or time outdoors needs to be factored into their daily lives, especially for house rabbits. Suitable housing is also necessary to prevent health problems such as upper or lower respiratory disease. Therefore avoiding small, dusty and dirty environments is vital while ensuring there is suitable weatherproofing to avoid damp.

Rabbits are highly social animals and due to being prey creatures, without a buddy to watch their back, a rabbit may never fully relax. However, bonding is a complicated procedure which can change for each pairing – therefore patience is key. A fast bonding can take as little as 2 weeks whereas more complicated ones can take as long as 3-4 months or, on rare occasions, 6 months to a year.

Feeding: The diet of a domestic rabbit should mainly consist of three things: • Hay/grass (timothy hay being the preferred type) • Rabbit pellets • Mixed leafy green vegetables/herbs Hay and grass should make up the majority of the rabbits diet (a minimum of a ball of hay the same size as the rabbit or larger a day) but a handful of leafy greens/herbs and a tablespoon per kg of ideal bodyweight of pellets will lead to a well balanced diet. Treats, vegetables and herbs can be given but must be given in moderation and new food items should be introduced separately – one new item per week to allow time for any intolerances to show. Long term changes to the rabbit’s diet should made slowly over the time of 4-6 weeks to allow their sensitive digestive system to adapt appropriately and reduce chances of an upset stomach.

It is important to note that both rabbits should be neutered before introducing to them to reduce hormonal influence. Bonding should be started a month after neutering to allow for enough hormones to leave the other rabbit interested enough without going overboard. A second cage will be needed near the original cage alongside neutral spaces for both rabbits to interact. Introductions should be gradual and closely observed at all times.

Vaccinations and Health Checks: Your rabbits should be fully vaccinated every year. There are two vaccinations available; a combination vaccination covering Myxo (myxomatosis) and RHD1 (rabbit haemorrhagic disease) and a single dose for RHD2 (a separate strain) – both are important and should be given 2 weeks apart from one another. The combination vaccination can be given from as young as 5 weeks old whereas the single dose vaccine has to be given from 10 weeks. These vaccines need to be repeated yearly to ensure full coverage. Frequent health checks with the vet will help to assess your rabbit’s general growth and care. It is important to monitor how much your rabbit eats, drinks and poos to make sure you can spot any potential problems early on. It is also a good idea to get your rabbit used to being handled and having their paws touched which will make health checks and nail clips generally easier and reduce stress levels during vet visits.

BULLS Rugby Football League Club

Bolsover Bulls is now entering its 4th year since formation. During this time we have gone from strength to strength and are now in a position where we have high quality and consistent coaches as well as a multitude of fantastic children. We offer rugby for Cubs (3-6 year olds) on a Sunday 9.30-10.30, U8s (Y1 and Y2) Tuesday 6-7 and Sunday 10.30-12, U10s (year 5 and 6) Tuesday 6-7 and Sunday 10.30-12 and finally U14s (year 8 and 9) Tuesday and Thursday 6-8. All coaches are qualified and DBS checked. This year has seen support from the council allowing for the pitch to be improved with a new drainage system and has also seen the club have rugby posts erected, which are available for people in the locality to use outside of training times. The past month has seen the club primaries return to playing competitive games at all age groups. The first of these saw the visit of Bassetlaw Bulldogs and what a fantastic morning it was. Roughly 60 children all

playing matches with smiles on their faces showing rugby is well and truly at home in South Normanton. The Bulls have also hosted Immingham Wasps at the Jim Sims Memorial ground showing the draw to the club from teams further afield. These games have proved to be a success with all coaches, players and parents, once again showing the talent, dedication and resilience of players across the primaries section of the club. Bolsover Bulls u14s also made their long awaited debut in the Yorkshire Junior League. The u14s have found it tough playing teams who have been playing and established longer as well as playing all games on the road whilst waiting for the delivery of the posts. Tough it may be, but each of the lads and coaches have really done the club proud. We are yet to see the u14s give up and despite playing some games with less than the full complement of 13, they play to the final whistle and often show true grit and determination whilst flying the Bulls flag in Yorkshire.

Some Interesting Stories (from George’s missus)

During the peak of the Pandemic, with both George and Gill, his wife, being vulnerable and shielding, I wasn’t able to get round to see my old mate as often as I’d like. However, to help them out in those especially difficult times, I’d go into Alfreton once a week, to get their groceries from Tesco. I was happy to do this – I may grumble occasionally but do like to help out when I can – particularly as it gave me the chance to really get to know Gill. Like her husband, she has plenty of tales to tell. In Gill’s case she often kept me amused as I stood on the doorstep after dropping off the weekly shop. These were, of course, strictly socially distanced conversations, and I make the point just in case our hapless PM reads this, thinks I broke the law, and offers this as evidence in his ongoing attempt to defend the indefensible! In between debating e.g. the relative merits of Heinz Baked Beans to Tesco’s own brand, complaining about the price of broccoli or of how difficult it is to get proper custard powder these days, she told me of how she missed her time as a primary school teacher at a local Roman Catholic school. She maintained that whilst the work was demanding, with class sizes significantly greater in her day, the children responded to her teaching and working life was, by and large, a joy. “Every day, I’d come home from school with a smile on my face”, she would tell me, as she recalled some of the, often inadvertent comic responses she would get from her classes of 7/8 year olds. Here’s a couple I thought I’d share with you.

The children had been asked to use their imagination to try to create a picture of someone or something that they had heard about, but had never seen. As Gill went around the room encouraging the children to be creative, she came to Janet, a bright but precocious young lass, and was intrigued. “What are you drawing Janet?” she asked. “It’s God”, was the prompt reply. Gill, somewhat puzzled, thought for a moment, before saying, “Very good Janet, but I’m not sure that anyone really knows what God looks like”. “Well, they will in a minute,” was the confidently speedy response.

On another occasion, Gill had been discussing the Ten Commandments, limiting herself to those that she felt were relevant to children of that age. After asking the class why they thought that the requirement to ‘honour thy father and mother’ was justified, she was pleased with the resulting sensible comments, as they showed a level of maturity that belied the age of children. Encouraged by this, in an attempt to widen the debate, she asked if anyone knew of a Commandment that advised on how to treat brothers and sisters. Quick as a flash, Daniel, who had two younger brothers and a baby sister replied inquisitively, “Is it, thou shall not kill?”

Marvellous meadows of the summertime

The Peak District and Derbyshire are famed for their wildflower meadows – although traditional hay meadows took a bad knock during the 1970s and 1980s with around 95% destroyed by intensive farming. Nevertheless, in recent decades there has been a gradual but perhaps accelerating recovery in many areas. There are newly created sites on restoration areas but also farming grassland, which in the era of reduced fertilisers is beginning to recover. The first signs are generally the emergence of fields of tall, golden meadow buttercups and followed by swathes of oxeye daisies. Orchids may follow along with other less common flowers. A great place to see this is on the National Trust estate at Longshaw and close by the Grouse Inn at Froggatt. Over the last few years these have developed into glorious flower meadows and full of birds, bees, and butterflies too. We even had curlews breeding there a few years back and in the evenings a barn owl’s ghostly appearance is not unusual. The types and variety of wildflowers in a meadow depends on various key factors, but mainly soil conditions and then the timing and intensity of management. Ideally a traditional meadow is cut in early spring and then left to grow and flower through the summer. It is then cut as ‘the sward’ in mid to late summer and then grazed to remove the ‘aftermath’. This is the way such areas were managed across Britain and much of Europe for centuries. These are ‘eco-cultural’ features mixing nature and people’s management in an intimate process though the annual pattern of the seasons. The result of management and of low input of nutrients (i.e. no application of artificial fertilisers) perhaps

restricted to the spreading of ‘muck’ each year. During the summertime the flowers have chance to grow to maturity, bloom, and set seed, and are then harvested as hay. For livestock be it cattle or horses, such hay is tastier, richer, and more nutritious that say ryegrass hay which is bulky but problematic because its quality is low. Interestingly too, the meadow plants are powered by networks of underground fungi called ‘mycorrhizas’ which form an invisible network interconnecting plants roots and enabling nutrients and water to be shared throughout the community. Soil conditions include the amount of organic matter from decomposing plant material, associated nutrient, but also water. Wet meadows have a particularly distinctive and rich flora with wonderful fragrant flowers such as meadowsweet, common fleabane, purple loosestrife, marsh marigold, and in spring, lady’s smock. Scarlet pimpernel appears and then disappears where there is a little disturbance – maybe a tractor rut or a molehill. On drier sites and where there is less grazing then meadow cranesbill thrives; a marker increasingly of meadow communities along roadside verges. Butterflies thrive in the meadows with common blue favouring areas with bird’s-foot trefoil and other members of the pea family. However, the annual hay-cut can be an ecological shock-wave and so insects like butterflies also need the uncut edges and corners, and rough areas alongside hedgerows.
