From the Editor Hello Readers!!

Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback regarding last month’s front covers & the mags in general, it is hugely appreciated. I have said before, feedback (preferably positive where possible!!) is always welcomed and keeps our little team motivated to keep trying different things. When we receive a lovely e-mail, like we have from some readers this month, it truly lifts us all and I am so proud of our team & how they’ve all remained positive over the last 18 months, so thank you, it’s nice to be nice!

I will do an introduction editorial to the team once we’ve got the website up and running. I’m conscious that I keep mentioning team members & it’d be better to put a face to a name! However, I think it’s fair to give a special mention to Danielle regarding the feedback on the mags, as she has and is continuing to do a sterling job on the community engagement aspect of Voice Magazines – all these new articles, are pretty much down to Danielle’s vision for what people would like to read more about….so much so, I think she’ll be looking for some support soon!

Mr Emily & I went on our hollibobs, whilst the rest of the team supported our very own Paul during his boxing debut for an Ultimate White Collar Boxing event in Pride Park. Paul originally signed up around November 2019 for the event in April 2020 but for obvious reasons, he has had the date scheduled and rescheduled a good 3 or 4 times! This has been a nightmare for him, not least as he’s been having to stop and start his training. Anyway, it finally happened on the 11th September, the team donned their glad rags and I speak for all of us when I say that we couldn’t be any prouder of his performance and his resolve to keep picking himself up, start training again

and stand up in the ring. He raised some fantastic money for cancer research with some of our lovely advertisers supporting him both by donating and attending. Watch out Anthony Joshua, Paul is coming for your crown!

The Voice ladies also had a fabulous outing this month to the Somercotes Cineroom to see ‘Little Women’. What an absolutely fabulous initiative and really well done to the organisers, we all loved it – read our thoughts in this months Swanwick edition or online. It’s ‘Cruella’ next!

In other news, it’s the Christmas editions for the next two magazines – and no! I still haven’t sorted any Christmas shopping out…..I tried…..and then the moment passed again!!! Anyway, get your adverts and events in, the team are waiting to hear from you!

HERITAGE OF BAKEWELL

The Old House Museum is tucked away on Cunningham Place behind All Saints Church.

Once known as the Parsonage House the museum is one of the oldest buildings in Bakewell. Over the years the meaning of the word parsonage has changed, so whilst nowadays we would think it referred to a house for a clergyman in the past it meant a person of importance, ie a lay rector, local agent or tenant.

Christopher Plant, agent to landowner Ralph Gell, occupied the house during the early 1500s. Mr Plant collected tithes, taxes of the day, a tithe being one tenth of the annual produce of a tenant.

In 1777 Richard Arkwright took a lease on Parsonage Yard, to use as accommodation for workers from Lumford Mill. At one time 5 families lived in the building. Later Edward Cunningham, the workhouse master, bought the Parsonage House and presumably this is where the name Cunningham Place originates.

William and Mary Pitt moved in to the Parsonage House in 1880, their photographs hang in the kitchen to this day. Lucy (nee Pitt) was ‘daily help’ and lived with her parents on Bagshaw Hill. She recalled that their cottage roof caved in after a particularly

heavy fall of snow. Lucy and her sister were sent to stay at her grandmothers in the Parsonage House. She talked of hearing footsteps in the middle of the night although she wasn’t frightened.

She wondered why a portion of wall jutted out and the sisters tried to imagine what might lay behind it. This unusual feature was later revealed to be the Garderobe, a toilet to you and me.

Although occupied until 1951 by 1952 the dwellings were considered to be slums. Miss Harrison, who owned the buildings, was unable to bring the houses up to the standard required and a demolition order was put on Cunningham Place.

Charles Bradbury a local builder whose mother had lived there when she was a girl, was an amateur historian. Charles carried out his own investigations into the buildings. Having revealed features concealed for generations he believed the buildings to be of historical importance.

A number of experts were enlisted to save the building. Unable to have the demolition order lifted they did win a stay of execution enabling a Historical Society to be formed with the aim of preserving the Old House. In October 1954 the building was finally listed, thus protecting its future.

Violet and Bernard Harrison generously donated the Parsonage House to the newly formed Bakewell and District Historical Society in 1955.

The museum opened to the public May 1959 and remains open to this day.

Sailing through the pandemic It has been said, during the Covid19 pandemic, that ‘we are all in the same boat’ but better to say: ‘we are all in the same storm’, our boats vary considerably and so our experiences of the storm! Chesterfield & District Beekeeping Association (CDBKA) has been in existence since 1947. Current membership stands at over 200 which is a record for the Association. Members have a wide range of age and experience, very few of whom meet the stereotypical beekeeper image –white, male, retired and bearded!

Many are women, and young working people are now joining, thanks to the now-raised profile of bees and pollinators.

We are a friendly bunch, with the experienced beekeepers always happy to give advice on the issues that can flummox newer beekeepers, or ‘newbees’ as we affectionately call them. Our region covers the South Yorkshire border down to the Matlock area taking in parts of Nottingham and Mansfield, however our base is Hasland, near Chesterfield. We have a small apiary where we teach and groups of ‘newbees’ who can gain ‘hands-on’ experience before they have their own bees.

One of the Association’s main aims is education of both beekeepers and the public.

We run beginners courses each spring for beekeepersto-be as we believe it’s important to know how to manage the bees BEFORE doing the exciting part of buying the first hive and bees. Support is continued with mentoring and further training sessions and workshops.

Many people don’t know the difference between honeybees and bumble bees which makes our volunteer swarm collectors very busy during the swarming season.

They are contacted usually via the BBKA interactive map. Swarm collecting provides an opportunity to share knowledge as people are usually very interested in what is happening with the bees.

At local summer fairs and shows we spend the day chatting to people about honeybees. One or two members also give talks and presentations to local schools and groups, sometimes with bees included!

During the season our apiary managers welcome members of the public to don a bee suit (which we loan them), open up the hives and invite them to take a closer look at our bees. Most find this closeness a little scary but fascinating.

Honeybees are our passion and this is what we want to share with the non-beekeeping public. Not so much to encourage them to keep bees themselves but to care about them, and help by planting the right flowers in their gardens, reducing their use of pesticides and understanding what bees and all other pollinators need.

Slimming World Recipe Chicken Tikka Rogan Josh Slimming World are famous for their fakeaways and their curries are some of the best. Whether you are on plan or not this is packed full of flavour and will leave you feeling full and satisfied!

Serves: 4 Ready in: 50

Method:

Syns per serving: FREE

1. Put the chicken in a bowl, sprinkle with the tikka curry powder and toss to coat well. Set aside.

2. Put the garlic, ginger, coriander, remaining spices and 100ml water in a small food processor and blitz to a paste (or use a stick blender and a jug).

Ingredients: • 4 skinless and boneless chicken breasts, cut into bitesize chunks • 2 tbsp medium tikka curry powder*

• 2 tsp ground cumin • ½ tsp garam masala* • 4 tsp ground coriander • 1 tsp smoked paprika • 1 large onion, diced • 4 tbsp tomato purée

3. Place a non-stick saucepan over a medium heat, add the paste and cook for 5 minutes. Add the diced onion and tomato purée and cook for 5 minutes or until soft, then add the sliced onions and peppers to the pan and cook for 10 minutes.

• 4 garlic cloves, chopped

4. Reduce the heat to low, add the chicken and cook for 15 minutes or until the chicken is cooked. Add the passata, stock cube and 200ml boiling water and cook for a further 10 minutes.

• ½ small pack fresh coriander

5. Stir in the yogurt, bring back to a simmer and serve with plain boiled rice and Speed veg.

• 2 tbsp medium curry powder*

• 1 chicken stock cube, crumbled

• ¼ tsp chilli powder

• 2 tbsp fat-free natural yogurt

• 5cm piece fresh root ginger, peeled and chopped

• 2 large red onions, sliced • 2 red peppers, deseeded and cut into chunks • 250g passata

Halloween - Spooky or Commercialised?

Who doesn’t love Halloween - well, ME for one! That could be because I am in the (err umm) slightly older age bracket and simply don’t get what amounts to the Americanisation of the day…I mean, giving kids carte blanche to knock on doors and expect sweeties cannot be a good idea - surely?! But taking a step back from the sugar fuelled fest of today, who knows the real reason we mark the 31st of October?

The origins of what we now know as Halloween are very ancient indeed, dating back to the pre-Christian Celtic peoples of Britain (and Northern Europe). The feast of Samhain (which is actually pronounce ‘sowain’) marked the end of their year sensible really as it’s the end of the growing and harvesting season and the beginning of the winter months. It was seen as the most important one of the four quarterly “fire festivals”.

At that time of year it was thought the veil between the living and the dead thinned, and the souls of the dead would return to visit their homes and families. As evil spirits and otherworldly beings could also breach “the veil” at this time, people would dress up in animal and monster costumes to confuse the potential visitors and avoid kidnap. Individual hearth fires would be allowed to die down and communal bonfires would be lit for roasting sacrificial cattle, the people would feast (whilst ensuring a share was left for the spirits, ancestors, and faery folk!) and a flame from the bonfire would be used to re-light their hearth fires.

When the Roman’s invaded Celtic lands they incorporated their own gods, Feralia, commemorating the passing of the dead, and Pomona, the goddess of the harvest. The advent of Christianity saw attempts to transmute Samhain into a Christian celebration, and in the 5th century A.D. Pope Boniface moved the festival to May

13th as a day to commemorate saints and martyrs. Funnily enough, this didn’t stop the fire festivals and so in the 9th century Pope Gregory moved the festival back to the original time of year, calling the day (1 November) All Saints Day. The day before became known as holy, or hallowed eve, which eventually became Halloween (een being another word for eve).

Some of the traditions we see today can be traced back to the original Celtic Samhain, dressing up for example, whilst “trick or treating” may have derived from early Scottish and Irish traditions of going from door to door singing songs for the dead in return for “soul cakes”. Hollowed out and carved turnips with candles inside, known as Jack O’ Lanterns (after a legendary character) originated in Ireland and were taken to the US by immigrants who switched to using readily available (and easier to carve) pumpkins.

Would Halloween be such a feature in UK life, particularly for children, without the influence of the US? Personally, I think not - it certainly wasn’t prominent in my childhood… although that was many moons ago!

What do Bakewell Town Football Club look for in the ideal coach?

In particular we are looking for someone who understands a child’s cognitive development. To many trainee and qualified teachers this makes complete sense. Think of this outside of the context of football coaching and more in the way of teaching and your own school experience. Think of the environment that Schools create for 5-8 year old children. Primary schools often use sand and water and discovery methods of learning.

Think back to when you started to learn how to read and write at primary school. You started by learning your alphabet - your letters - your A-B-Cs. You learned sounds or phonics and put letters together to create small words. Cat, Mat, Hat and so on. Simple basic learning bricks. Once we learned letters we learned words and then constructed sentences, paragraphs and stories and careers.

Schools build upon concepts. They teach the building blocks in the early stages of learning as described above and as the children cognitively develop they are capable taking complex GCSE’s, A-Levels and then degrees. This learning goes on over a period of time from age 5 - 18 for GCSE’s - that is 13 years!

Teachers create a positive environment where children feel safe, secure, happy and positive about learning.

So, this is the very straight forward question. Why do some volunteer coaches think that children aged 8 12 should be learning and understanding advanced concepts that seasoned professionals are still trying to master?

I have witnessed coaches

screaming at children to get into space - the child in question intelligently asked the coach - “where is the rocket coach - how do we get into space!” I’ve seen a coach scream at a 7 year old in an attempt to take a safe thrown in - “down the line” - the poor kid dropped the ball and ran down the line!!

The coach then lambasted the Child - who do you think was the dumb one?

Some parent coaches come with their own hidden agenda. They want to fulfil their own unfulfilled dreams.

Broken dreams of being a professional footballer or World Cup winning manager! Some of them have a different agenda to “recruit” a championship-winning side a team that goes undefeated all year long.

At Bakewell FC we have a “kidriculum” devised by over 500 experienced professional FA coaches and created

by Dr Russell and his team. Every coach at Bakewell FC gets a set of activities and coaching drills that make up a Child centric and developmental program that enables every Child in the program to develop and grow to their maximum potential.

Book Review Fans of TV show Pointless will know and probably love Richard Osman’s sly wit. And it comes shining through in his Thursday Murder Club series of novels which have become a huge word of mouth success. People love them.

There’s a new one out – The Man Who Died Twice - which is probably why we’re seeing a lot more of Mr Osman at the moment, but a good place to introduce yourself to his characters is the first book in the series – which goes by the title of The Thursday Murder Club.

Four friends, living in a quiet retirement village, meet once a week to try to work out unsolved murders. A bit like bridge, but with added drama. Then a brutal killing happens on their doorstep and they step up in ways no-one could foresee.

The story may sound simple, but the twists are brilliant, the characters are perfect and it’s full of wry British humour at its best – it’s the kind of book you would imagine Mr Osman would write. Basically this book is a great feel-good experience. It’s clever, crisp and warmly written and will leave you smiling. Just as well he’s penned another then, and with more promised.

The motorway is 193 miles (311 km) long and was constructed in four phases. Most of the motorway was opened between 1959 and 1968.

There had been plans before the Second World War for a motorway network in the UK. Early ideas were put forward by Lord Montagu to build a ‘motorway like road’ from London to Birmingham in 1923, but it was a further 26 years before the Special Roads Act 1949 was passed, which allowed for the construction of roads limited to specific vehicle classifications, and in the 1950s, the country’s first motorways were given the government go-ahead.

The M1 was Britain’s first full-length motorway and opened in 1959, passing through the Derbyshire countryside. The early M1 had no speed limits, crash barriers or lighting, and had soft shoulders rather than hard and was a very different scene to the one we know of today.

The Derbyshire section of the M1 involved many local communities either losing land to the new road or being part of the workforce and companies they constructed it. Farm fields were suddenly divided or in some instances farm buildings were completely razed to the ground.

Communities from Harthill, Killamarsh through to Pinxton supplied labour and plant to support the companies such as Bowmer Kirkland, Tarmac and Laiang., JC Balls haulage, and many others.

Diverse communities - Polish, Irish, Hungarian and Italian labour worked on the Derbyshire stretch alongside traditional communities associated with steel and mining that lay in the path of the new road.

Many former employees of companies who worked on the M1 construction are now in the mid seventies and have a wealth of archival memories and stories that need collating and recording for the future. East Peak CIC are looking to celebrate this rich cultural story in a forthcoming project.

It may feel like we’re heading towards less activity in the garden, but there’s actually loads to do this month.

Tidying things up before winter is a given, but some areas deserve more attention.

Pot up tender perennials so you can put them somewhere out of the reach of frost.

Rake leaves from ponds and clear out debris and weeds. Leave all this on the side of the pond to allow creatures to climb out and back into the water. If you have tender water plants get rid of any dead leaves and sink the plant into a bucket or tray of mud, leaving in a protected light place over winter.

If you want to plant conifer hedges or shrubs which keep their leaves over winter, do it now while the soil is still warm.

Top Tip

For winter and spring colour plant up winter pansies, primulas, cyclamen and winter heathers. Hopefully you’ll have your daffs and crocuses in by now, but there’s still time to put in lily, allium and crocosmia bulbs for spring. Tulips go in next month.

Take saucers away from under pots or containers and raise them up on crocks or feet to prevent plants becoming waterlogged and minimizing the dangers of the containers cracking from frost.

Clustering pots also helps protect them from ice damage.

The autumnal fungi gently emerge Fungi are part of our ‘invisible biodiversity’ and in many ways make everything else happen in nature and ecology. Fungi breakdown or decompose dead animals and plants and without them many ecological systems would not work. What’s more, these decomposition activities are vital to release much-needed nutrients for plants and animals to thrive. However, there is much more to fungal activity than this. For example, without the power of these microbes we would not have bread, wine, or beer, which would be a great shame. However, we would also be without antibiotics provided by Penicillium fungi and incidentally, there would not be any smelly blue cheeses either. Nevertheless, there is much more since largely unseen fungi infect the roots of great trees and it is they that help the tree take up essential nutrients and water from the soil. Wefts of fungal hyphae envelope the tree roots and in exchange for sugars (made in the tree’s leaves from sunlight and carbon dioxide from the air), the ‘mycorrhizal’ fungus pumps mineral nutrition back into the living plant. Other fungi support the growth of wildflowers and grasses in meadows, especially in the limestone dales of the Peak. Yet other species power the common heather to domination of vast swathes of our region’s uplands. Amazingly, much of this activity goes on unseen. We sometimes do spot the familiar ‘mushrooms’, and especially so in late summer and autumn. However, it is worth remembering that what you see here is virtually the just the ‘flower’ of a flowering plant. The serious business end of the fungus extends more widely and sometimes vastly, and is the hidden hyphae that power the fungal ecology. Out of sight, out of mind; but this may be a problem since many important fungi are suffering because of climate change and the way that we manage our wider environments. This could be bad news because if they are compromised, then so will we be.

It seems that whilst fungi are not always appreciated (and yes, they do cause diseases in humans, in our animals, and in our crops for example), they are hugely important in very many ways. Adapted to many different modes of life and with varying ecologies, fungi come in a great variety of shapes, forms, and colours. Some fungi such as brackets on old trees like oak, beech, and birch, are very large and often long-lived. Others mushrooms on acidic grasslands especially are brightly coloured, sometimes almost day-glow; pink or orange waxcaps that break down dead leaves and other organic material in the soil. Others are tiny yellow, needle-like fungi, which may be mycorrhizal on green plants. A great place to find some very special ‘mushrooms’ is in the grasslands around the Peak District Eastern Moors and especially on the National Trust’s Longshaw estate near Fox House.

Head into oak-birch woodlands and you may find the appropriately named ‘stinkhorn’ fungus; a jelly-like ball that matures into a rude-looking and smelly organism. Another familiar species is the red and white ‘fly agaric’ a hallucinogenic species taken by Vikings to make them fearless in battle but which can have very nasty side effects too.
