Rewilding the Highlands
Nestled in the breathtaking Scottish Highlands lies the Alladale Wilderness Reserve, a stunning natural paradise spanning over 23,000 acres.
The result of over two decades of tireless conservational efforts, this once-Victorian estate has been transformed into a thriving ecosystem that provides a safe haven for various native species. In addition to the opportunity to bask in the peaceful tranquillity of the reserve and partake in wild outdoor pursuits, visitors can also witness firsthand the incredible impact of conservation efforts on preserving the natural world.
With over one million trees planted since the estate was purchased by Paul Lister 20 years ago (funded by the fortunes from his multimillion-pound furniture business MFI), this monumental effort has allowed back the actual native trees like Scots Pine and fulfilled Paul’s longing desire to recreate the ‘Caledonian Forest’ that once covered this whole area.
The reserve is set amid epic landscapes, surrounded by beautiful mountains, forests, and rivers. During spring, guests can indulge in the spectacular view of the bright-yellow fields of gorse and Scotch broom. By autumn, the misty clouds cascade down the steep cliffs of the glen, accompanied by the vibrant purple heather that flourishes on the valley floor and hills.
The reserve is home to various native species, and visitors can expect to see iconic golden eagles hunting high over the mountain ridges, along with red squirrels and pine martens clambering about the trees. Paul has even partnered with the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) to save the Scottish wildcat - with several enclosures for the species on the reserve. Kittens are transferred from the reserve to RZSS’s breed-andrelease centre at Kincraig, where the population is bolstered, ready for liberation into the wild.
Sitting proudly in the heart of Alladale Wilderness Reserve is the elegantly restored Victorian lodge and private residence, sleeping up to 14 guests, and located at the end of a 12-mile singletrack road along the Carron River. Offering the ultimate privacy and relaxation, its surrounded by birch and Scots pines.
The River Alladale meanders its way through the reserve and to the first of Alladale’s exclusive-use luxury lodges: Ghillie’s Rest, a remote two-bedroom hideaway with underfloor heating. A little further along you reach Eagle’s Crag, a private cottage for up to eight guests, where firewood and underfloor heating await. Deeper into the heart of the reserve, seven miles from Alladale Lodge, and only accessible by a 4WD vehicle is Deanich Lodge. This former hunting lodge is one of the most remote places to stay in Britain – located in a place where Alladale’s red deer gather and close to where the golden eagles nest, making it possible to be genuinely ‘off-grid’ and wholly connected with nature.
You may like exclusive use of the entire estate (available for private hire of up to 26 guests). No matter how or where you choose to stay, Dream Escape will arrange unforgettable experiences for you in the local area and at the reserve, guided by Alladale’s highly knowledgeable rangers.
Activities range from a guided nature walk of the reserve to a spot of fishing in the rivers and lochs for brown trout, or perhaps an afternoon spent foraging, plucking mushrooms, herbs and berries from the estate. Get hands-on at clay pigeon shooting, or learn about the plants and wildlife from the nature experts who live and work at Alladale. For cycle enthusiasts, there are 15 miles of tracks to enjoy on the reserve's mountain bikes, or you might prefer to opt for four wheels on a Land Rover guided experience around the estate. Expect to witness wild Atlantic salmon returning to spawn in the River Carron and jumping clear of the water at Glencalvie waterfall. You might even get the chance for a close-up encounter with an iconic long-haired Highland Cow.

Less than an hour’s drive from Alladale, you can play a round of golf at The Dornoch Royal Golf Club, one of the leading courses in Scotland, with its Championship Course or the Struie Course; Visit Dunrobin Castle, an impressive French- style castle and the most northerly major castle in Scotland, where aerial flying falconry displays are part of the entertainment in the extensive and beautiful gardens; and lose yourself in the Cairngorms National Park, known for its stunning scenery and wildlife.
You might also enjoy a venture on Paul’s ‘Whisky Trail’ to tour the legendary Glenmorangie, Dalmore and Balblair distilleries. Or, on your return to Alladale, you might prefer an exclusive on-site private tasting hosted by local expert Charles Reid.

Highlights at Alladale Wilderness Reserve
Walking & Hiking
Alladale’s bluffs and remote Highland glens offer a wild spectacle for hikers of all skill levels. Walk through the most northerly stand of original old-growth Caledonian forest, take a stroll over to the historic Croick Church, or hike up to Alladale’s middle ridge for a once-in-a-lifetime view of both the East and West coasts of Scotland. Guided walks are available for different fitness levels.
Nature Watching
Over the years, Alladale's rewilding programme has led to an increase in species that can be observed. Look to the skies for golden eagles, search the stony tops for ptarmigan and hares, while keeping your eye out for our native red squirrel and black grouse. This is a landscape in recovery, where nature is returning.
Fishing
Alladale offers world-class brown-trout fly fishing. Try your hand along one of their two rivers with dozens of pools, or explore one of the many glacial lochs. If you are a keen fly fisher, or interested in giving it a try, Alladale is the ideal place. For the beginner, you can book an informative guided fishing session with a ranger.
Photography
In nature lies inspiration. Photographers of all skill levels will be awed by Alladale’s panoramic glens, the untamed rivers, the old-growth and recovering forests. You can capture images of red deer stags on the mountains, Atlantic salmon leaping in the waterfalls, or set out onto the reserve at first light to capture the remarkable landscape at sunrise. Away from light pollution, Alladale is one of the best places for astrophotography in the UK.
Mountain Biking
For competent cyclists, Alladale has over 15 well-maintained mountain bikes, and six e-bikes available, allowing you to enjoy miles of stunning Highland scenery. Cycle to Deanich Lodge along Glen Mhor to get a taste of the rough beauty and solitude Alladale has to offer. Explore the track along Glen Alladale and experience its majestic surroundings.
Foraging
Alladale’s peaty bogs and old-growth woodlands are a cornucopia for the budding forager, and depending on the season, you can also discover a wide range of wild mushrooms. Led by Alladale’s foraging guide, this experience is a fantastic way to appreciate nature’s gifts.
Wild Swimming
Reset your mind and body with a wild swim in one of Alladale’s lochs, or dip into the Carron or Alladale River; the water really is some of the purest you will find anywhere in the UK.
4wd Reserve Tour
On an expertly guided tour of the reserve, you’ll venture down both of Alladale’s reforested glens and soak up the impressive views. You’ll learn about the restoration work underway, visiting the reforestation areas and spotting native wildlife, all in the company of Alladale’s skilled and knowledgable rangers.
