Dealers examine Twitter’s advantages

Each month we ask members of our National Advisory Council (NAC) a question or questions on a current hot topic. Tis month we asked, “Do you use Twiter to connect with your customers? If you are using Twiter, are you doing it or do you have a member of your staf take care of the tweets? How ofen do you tweet, and what kinds of things do you post? Do you think this form of social media is important to the success of your business?” Here are some of their responses. 1. We do not use Twiter currently; however, social media is very important and the dealers using it currently are ahead of the curve. 2. We are just beginning to investigate Twiter. 3. We currently do not use Twiter on a daily basis; however, as we expand our social media footprint Twiter will be something we will make use of on a daily basis with more than two tweets being made daily. 4. All tweets I do myself, but this will be handled in the near future by some Millennials on my staf who are more in touch with the social media. Social media is one of the fast-growing contact points to get more people, more of the Millennials’ generation and some others who are online, in touch with us.

What’s on your mind?

We also asked our NAC what was on their mind. Tey responded with:

Since the countervailing tarif on tires produced in and imported from China, it seems the only thing China has lef to sell competitively is medium commercial truck tires. Subsequently, we are seeing the market becoming saturated with imported Chinese truck tires at remarkable price levels (akin to the late 1990s). These low prices are extremely atractive to both the wholesaler and the end-user. Due to this we’ve seen some atrition in our traditional market share and it’s worrisome to this independent dealer who struggles daily to survive! Tripp Lee, General Manager Frasier Tire Service Inc. Sumter, S.C.

Prices on Chinese tires have come down but have not sparked any interest in sales. Jef Cohen, Co-owner Traction Wholesale Center Bensalem, Pa.

Commercial or medium truck tire pricing is very aggressive as dealers and distributors may be siting on some inventories. Jon Shields, Branch Manager Carroll Tire North Atlanta – C33 Marieta, Ga.

Website readers chime in

Readers of Modern Tire Dealer’s website comment on news items and articles. Here are a few examples.

Excellent article by Wayne Williams in the April issue of MTD titled “Counter culture.”

Wayne is spot on... treating the customer right, and understanding the dynamics of good sales practices, really shows in his “Counter culture” approach. Well done. George McConnell, Engineering Group Manager, Full size Truck Paint Operations, Retired General Motors Warren, Mich.

I’d like to comment on an item on your website titled “Online tire sales afect tire registration.” With our software system, we just put Department of Transportation (DOT) numbers on the invoice and it goes to CIMS Tire Registration and it’s done.

I feel these online tire suppliers should have to do the same! To me it’s just part of taking care of your customers! Dean Biddle, President Dean’s Tire Pros & Auto Care Chesterton, Ind.

For more information on the company Biddle uses, see CIMS’ website at www.cimstireregistration.com. – Ed.

With the frst round of raising the duties on Chinese tires, the price of all tires went up. Tat was for a defned period of time and was not extended.

Tis new decision looks like it’s a forever thing with no date of expiration. Jon Jafess, Former Tire Dealer

Former President of the New York Tire Dealers Association
