Allartisbuiltonthefoundationofthelineandthe countlessconfigurationsitcreates.Thelinethathas lengthwithoutbreadthorthickness,thatbendscurves, mingleswithotherlines,overtakingthem,overlapping them,andthus,whendrawnbytrainedandcultivated hands,createsbreathtakingimages.

Sincetimesimmemorial,fromtheancientcavepaintings tothehoaryartsofEgypt,China,LatinAmerica,through theRenaissancetothisday,allgreatartistshavetreated drawingthelinewithutmostsanctity,almostreligious reverence.DaVincehaslefthundredsofdrawingsof variouselements,describingtheirfunctionsanduse. Goya,Picasso,Matisse,Modigliani,Dali,andKlee(he alonehasleftasmanyas18,000drawings),wereallpast mastersinthedrawing.Theywereallkeenlyawareofthe crucialroletheirdrawingsplayedintheirartistic endeavour,inprojectingonpaperorcanvas,withthe helpofcolororwithoutit,theirthoughts,theirresponses totheoutsideworld,theirinnersenseofdesign.

Unfortunately,mostPakistanipaintersdonotseemto paymuchattentiontothisbasicdiscipline.Similarly, mostartschoolsignoreitandencouragetheirpupilsto takestraighttopainting.Thepupilsthemselvesseemto welcomethispractice,forgettingthatonemustlearnto standbeforeonecanwalkandonemustlearntowalk beforeonecanrun.

Asaresult,theyremainblissfullyignorantoftheprimary importanceofdrawingtotheirworkorwhateverthey perceiveittobe.Theurgeforquicksuccessweighs heavilywiththem.JamilNaqshisoneofthosefewartists inPakistanwhostillbelieve,andverystronglysothatthe rootsofgoodvisualexpressionlieinone'sexpertisein drawing.Hehasgonethroughthemill,literally.Hehad hisearliestlessonsasachildgrowingupintheculturallychargedatmosphereofhisfamily.Hisfatherandhis friendswereartisticallycultivatedpeopleandhisfather delvedintominiaturepaintinginadditiontohisother artisticpursuits.Theaestheticambianceofhis householdencouragedJamiltotaketovisualartsin earnest.Then,asayoungman,hewasfortunatetoserve outhisapprenticeshipundertheguidanceofUstad Sharif,thegreatminiaturistofmoderntime.Thisbrushed uphislinedrawingandtodayhecanbedescribedas probablytheonlypainterinPakistanwhogivesasmuch, ifnotmore,importancetodrawingastopainting.Infact, sincehisearliestdaysasanartist,hehasnevergivenup drawing.Hisfameasoneoftheleadingpaintersoftoday neverdistractedhimfromhisfirstlove—drawing.

Acollectionof300drawingsthathehasgiftedtothe FriendsofJamilNaqshFoundationhasthreeseries,each of100drawings.Eachoftheseriesistobeputonpublic viewingatthenewlyset-upJamilNaqshMuseumin phases.ThefirsttogoontheshowistheWoman andHorseseries,aglimpseofwhichonewasableto havetowardstheendof1998inthe'JamilNaqshpays TributetoMarinoMarini'exhibition.

ThedrawingsinthisseriesbeartestimonytoJamil'srich imaginationandhisabilitytoprojectitonpaperina mannerthatthetwosensuousfiguresappealbothtothe viewer'saestheticsandhissenses.Thetwolinearfigures aredrawnindifferentpostureseachdrawingpresenting adifferentambiancethantheotherincountless variations.Herethefiguresmingleandmergetobecome onewhole;theretheyseemtoexudeakindofenigmatic hostility.Butgenerallyspeaking,theviewergetsthe overallimpressionofaperpetualfascinationthetwo protagonistsinthedrawingsseemtohaveforeachother.

Jamilhasbeendrawinghorsesforaboutfourdecades. Heisfascinatedbytheenergyagilityandbeautythe horserepresents.Hehasmadeseveralhundred drawings(someenlivenedwithdashesofcolor)ofthis animalwhichhasenchantedpaintersdowntheages.A wholegenerationofEuropeanpaintersdevotedalmost theirentireworkinglifetopaintinghorses.MarinoMarini, oneofthemostcelebratedsculptorsofthiscentury,drew horseswithakindofdevotionwithwhichthe RenaissanceartistspaintedtheMadona.InhisWoman andHorseseries,Jamilshowsasimilarcommitmentto projectinghisimagesinalltheirvariousfacets—a commitmentthatmakeshisdrawingsaworkoftruly greatart.

ThesecondistheWomanandPigeonseries,asubject thathasbeenclosetoJamil'sheartforyears(someofthe drawingsinthisseriesdatebackto1965orearlier).Here, asinhisremarkableWomanandPigeonpaintings,Jamil hasdrawnthetwofigures(occasionally,therearetwo pigeons)asachallengeindesign.Hehasreligiously studiedthelovelyfeatheredcreatureandthefemaleform forayearwhichenableshimtodraw—andpaint~them intheirmultitudinouspostures.Thepigeoninhalfflight, thrustingforwarditschestwithitsneckpulledback regally.Thepigeoncourtingandcaressingthefemale figuresensuouslyandthelatterrespondingequally sensuously.Theirsisaheavenlyrelationship.The drawingsaremostlydoneinpenandink,but occasionallyJamilusesthepencilaswell,and sometimesabitofcolorwashwhichgiveshisdrawings anextradimension.

ThethirdistheAngelseries.Thosewhohavebeen watchingJamil'sprogresswithhisPigeonandWoman serieswillnoticeanewelementhere.Hislinesareas immaculatelydrawnasinthisearlierwork,buthis imageryhasundergoneaqualitativechange.Elements fromthepigeonandthewomanaremergedinamanner thatmystifiestheviewerandholdshisattentionforlong spells.Jamilhastakenextraordinarycareinaesthetically creatinghaloedimagesbymixingpartsfromthetwo figuresorsuperimposingeachother.Thisserieshasa highlythematicvalueimpregnatedwithmessages.Some maynotappreciatethisdidacticelement,buttheywould stillfindthesuperbaestheticvalueofthesedrawings highlyengaging.

Naqsh,Pakistan’sdistinguishedmodernmaster,wasborn inKairana,UttarPradeshinIndiain1939.Despitehavinga largefamily,Naqshprefersspendingtimealone.Hewasa manwholivedforhisart;hespentallthetimehecould painting,forhoursatastretch,seldomleavinghome,and withasenseofurgency.Anavidreader,hisbooksserved asthefoundationsofhislifelongcuriositywithartand aesthetics.

Hisjourneyfromayoungboytothemasterhebecamewas enduring,startingduringtheemergenceofPakistanin 1947.Aswithalotoffamiliesduringthattumultuous period,Jamil'sfamilygotseparatedandwhilehereached Pakistanwithhisolderbrothers,theywereneverreunited againwithhisfatherwhowasleftbehind.Raisedwithout parentstoguideandprovide,hefacedhardshipand struggleearlyinlifebutremainedsteadfastandpositivein thefaceofadversities.

Atagefourteen,Naqshbeganatwo-yeartrekhometo Kairanatofindoutwhathasbecomeofhisfamily,onlyto findouttheirhomeasheremembersitnolongerexisted. Thisexperiencewilllaterlendamelancholicnotetohis works,evokingadeepfeelingoflongingandnostalgia. ThisjourneyendedinLahore,whereheenrolledatthe MayoSchoolofArtsandCrafts,andwherehislifelong affairwithartstarted.

TheyearsoflearninginLahorecametoanendin1954; whenhedecidedtomoveandsettleinKarachi.Particularly skilledandgifted,hewasofferedajobinthestudioofa leadingadvertisingcompany,offeringmaybeforthefirst time,aregularincomethatenabledhimtopurchasemuchdesiredartmaterials.Thethrillofthis,fromthemomentof arrivinghometounpackingofthematerialshebought withhisveryfirstsalary,wasneverforgottenandwould oftenbecomparedwiththerecognitionandhonorshegot laterinhiscareer.

Naqshremainedintrinsicallyafigurativepainter throughouthiscareer;thehumanformgavehimthe greatestaestheticsatisfaction,andhisgeniusinfocusing onasinglesubjectandrecreatingitinavarietyofforms wasindisputable.Bythemid-60s,Naqshhadevolveda distinctivepersonalstyle.Thefemaleformbecamea leitmotif,juxtaposedwithpigeonsinaninspiredcoupling.

Throughtheyears,countlessopportunitiestoexhibithis workabroadcamehisway,whichhedeclined.Hehad strongconvictionsthatanartistmustworkouthis aestheticsandknowwheretheyarecomingfrom;andthat theymustfirstberecognizedandunderstoodinhis environmentbeforeventuringfurther.Thus,therecurring motifscenteredonculturaltraditionsinhisworksandthe occasionalappendingofsomethingnewtothem.

WhileextremelysuccessfulinPakistan,Naqsheventually decidedtomovetotheUKtofocusmoreonhisart. Despitehisinitialreservations,hisworkshadbeen exhibitedextensivelyinPakistan,India,theUK,andthe UAE.Hereceivedmanyhonorsandrecognitions,among themaremedalsandawardsfromthePakistanArtCouncil, Karachi;theMinistryofCulture,Pakistan;andtheArts CouncilofPakistan.In2003,aretrospectiveofhiswork washeldattheMohattaPalaceMuseuminKarachi,arare honorforalivingartist.

TheartistpassedawayinLondononthe16thofMay2019 afterasuddenandbriefillness.

4.1. ArtianaprovidesanassuranceonbehalfoftheSellerthateach artworkofferedatauction, isagenuineworkoftheartistlisted. Artianaguaranteestheauthenticityofsuchartworkforaperiodof sixmonthsfromtheauctionclosingdate Authenticityinrelationto artworksshallmeancomplianceoftheartworkwiththedescription providedonthe website, particularlywith referencetothename oftheartist, title(ifany)oftheartwork, date, theschoolofart (ifmentioned), dimensions, medium, etc.

Intheunlikely eventthatwithinsixmonthsfromthecloseofan auction, itisproved bytheBuyer, tothe reasonablesatisfactionof Artiana, thattheitem wasnotauthenticandif, inArtiana’sopinion, thiswouldhavesignificantlyimpactedthe WinningBidfortheitem, Artianashallbeentitledto rescindthesale Insuchan event, the SellerwillbeliabletorefundthepaymentfortheitemtotheBuyer,

through Artiana.Theitem inquestion willsubsequently be returned totheSeller.

Allsuchclaimswillbehandledonacase-by-casebasis, andinthe caseofanauthenticityclaimin relationtoanartwork, examinable proof, clearlydemonstratingthattheitemisnotauthentic, willbe required. Suchexaminableproofshouldbeprovided byanestablished andacknowledgedauthority Artiana’sdecision, with regardstosuch claims, shallbefinalandbinding.

4.2 Theaboveguarantee giveninclause4.1shallbesubjecttothe followingconditions:

•TheclaimismadebytheBuyerasregisteredwithArtiana(the benefitoftheclaimisnotassignabletoanysubsequentownersor otherswhomayacquireorhaveaninterestinanyoftheProperties)

•ThePropertyisreturnedinthesameconditionthatit wasinatthe timeofdeliveryofthePropertytotheBuyer

•TheProperty wasindisputablypurchasedthroughArtiana

4.3. InthecaseofPropertieswhichhavebeencategorised by Artiana asPreciousObjects,Artianaprovidesanassurance, onbehalfofthe Seller, thateachpieceshallcomplywithcharacteristicsorfeatures mentionedintheDescriptionofthePropertyintheAuction CatalogueforaslongasthePropertyisinthepossessionofArtiana. Allcoloredstonesunlesscertifiedmayormaynotbetreatedfor enhancements. ItisthereforeadvisableforBuyersorpotentialBuyers ofsuchProperties, toinspectthePropertypriortoBiddingorprior toshipmentorBuyerpickupfromArtiana.

4.4. InthecaseofPropertiessuchasantiquitiesoritemsofhistorical interestwhichhavebeencategorisedbyArtianaasCulturalArtifacts, Artianaprovidesanassurance, onbehalfoftheSeller, thateachobject ofantiquarianorhistoricalinterestorsignificancehasbeenacquired withoutviolatinganylocalorinternationallaws.

Intheunlikely eventthatitisprovedthattheacquisition, provenance and/or ownershipofsuchCultural Artifactsofferedatour Auction issubjecttoalegaldispute, theBuyershall keep Artianaindemnified fromanysuchlegalproceedings.

4.5. Inallcases Artiana retainsthe righttoconsultwith, atthe expenseoftheBuyer, uptotworecognizedexpertsinthefield (suchexpertsbeingmutuallyacceptabletoArtianaandtheBuyer), toexaminethePropertyunderquestionbeforedecidingtorescind thesaleandoffertherefundundertheaboveguarantee Theopinion oftheexpertsshallnotbebindingon Artiana.

4.6. Inthe eventoftheSeller’s failureto refundtheproceedsasstated inthisclause, theBuyershall returnthePropertyto Artianaand authoriseArtianaasitsagenttoinitiatelegalproceedingsagainstthe Seller Anysuchstepstakenorlegalproceedingsinstituted by Artiana, againsttheSeller, shallbeatthecostoftheBuyerandArtiana’s liabilityshallbelimitedasperClause5.1.

5.1. Artianahasanobligationto refundtheSalePricetotheBuyer onlyuponrecoveryofsuchamountsfromtheSellerandinthe circumstancesdescribedinClause4above(AuthenticityGuarantee). TheBuyerindemnifies Artianafromanynon-recoveryofsuch amountsandagreesthattheyshallnotholdArtianaresponsiblein casesuchamountsarenot recoverablefromtheSeller Artiana providesinsurancecoverageonsoldLotsforsevendaysafterthe Closing Timeoftheauction Afterthatperiod, oronceaLothasbeen collected(whicheverisearlier), theLotwillbeentirelyatthebuyer’s risk. Damages, lossesorlossin valueofanyartworks(including frames)incurredduringshippingandtransitarenotcoveredasper theinsurancepolicytaken by Artiana. IncasetheBuyeroptsfor transitinsurancecoveragearrangedforbyArtianabyanyoftheir insuranceproviders,Artianashallnotentertainanydirectclaimsfor damageorlossduringshippingandtransitandthese wouldhaveto bedirectedtosuchinsuranceproviders; Subjecttotheauthenticity guaranteeabove, neither Artiana’ssuppliersnor Artiana, noranyof Artiana’semployeesoragents, shallbe responsible, eitherforthe correctnessofanystatementsastotheauthorship, origin, date, age, attributesorgenuinenessofanyPropertyinthesale, orforany mistakesintheDescription, orforany faultsordefectsinthe Properties, orforanyotheractoromission, whatsoever Artianaoffers noguaranteeorwarrantyotherthanthelimitedassurancecontained intheauthenticityguaranteeabove.

5.2. Itisstatedandagreedthatthe rescissionofthesaleandthe refundofthetotalSalePricepaid bytheBuyeristhesole remedy thatmaybesought byaBuyer, andsuch remedyisexclusiveandin lieuofanyother remedywhichmayotherwisebe availableunderlaw. Noimage, illustrationorwrittenmaterialmaybeusedor requiredwithoutthepriorwrittenpermissionofArtiana Artianaand theSeller(s)makeno representationor warrantythattheBuyerofa Propertywillacquireanycopyrightorother reproduction rightsinit.

7.1. Artianamay validlyservetheBidder/Buyerwithlegalnotice, if required, undertheseConditionsofSale by:

•SendinganemailtotheemailaddressdisclosedbytheBidder/ Buyerto Artiana; or

•SendingacouriertotheaddressdisclosedbytheBidder/Buyer toArtiana.

7.2. Suchlegalnoticeshallbedeemedtohavebeenproperlyserved:
