Personal Statement MA Architecture and Urbanism

After entering the discipline of architecture, I was immediately overwhelmed by the pursuit of building technologies. China's rapid urbanization has created many construction needs, resulting in many new technology stacks that lack of carefully scrutinized. With the advent of the technological revolution, new materials and structures have become designers’ targets. Balancing technological innovation with the essence of architecture is a consistent theme in my design approach. As I understand it, this perspective aligns with the focus of the MA Architecture and Urbanism Program: Exploring the frontiers of architecture and design, with an emphasis on the latest technological advances, and utilizing professional knowledge and research techniques to showcase architects' contributions within their field, framed by the urgent challenges posed by rapid urbanization and climate change.

ICELAND VISITOR CENTER

As the urbanization trend continues to accelerate, architects must address the challenges of an increasingly complex and interconnected world, from environmental sustainability to urban planning and social dynamics. Just as the complexity I was facing in the renewal project of Ritan International Business Center, which included many unreasonable architectural spaces, a chaotic flow of people and logistics, a lack of vitality, etc. I attempt to seek the most appropriate technology and materials to solve the actual needs of the site and re-establish a balance between tradition and the future, between people and the environment. In this project, I used data analysis and machine learning to enhance decision-making and simulate the data through the Wool algorithm. This further optimized the transportation network and also formulated the initial spatial structure. The final design not only revitalized the local business but also created an attractive public space. In terms of construction details, I used parametric modelling in structural design establishing a logical relationship between the structural members and the building skins and forming a "botanical outer epidermal structure". This is not only to explore the relationship between the richness of holes in the outer skin and the daylight illuminance but also to be able to convert 2D patterns into a 3D structure that meets the construction requirements. I believe there is an urgent need to rethink the excessive dependence on technology and superficially showing off skills. Eye-catching shapes and extraordinary compositions do not lead to the core of architectural design. Instead, the key to architecture lies in applying the acquired knowledge and technology to address the challenges arising from contemporary urbanization development. As Mario Botta stated: “Architecture is the most sacred work there is in the built environment because it transforms a condition of nature into between the architecture and the environment.” It should be emphasized that I do not resist new technologies, but I believe that architecture should return to its essence. Technology could provide people with the most appropriate solutions between local needs and global development trends (whether high-tech or low-tech). Therefore, I hope to have the opportunity to study in the MA Architecture and Urbanism program, work with an international body of experts to explore the frontiers of advanced architecture and design, and their convergence with science and technology, and gain a deeper understanding of the role computation plays in complex design synthesis. In my future research and design, I am eager to explore how to promote the proper use of technology in architectural design that considers diverse cultures and the natural environment. By doing so, I aim to empower architectural resilience and affordance. The future is here. Please let me shape it.

The fundamental strategy of Critical Regionalism is to mediate the impact of universal civilization with elements derived indirectly from the peculiarities of a particular place. It is clear from the above that Critical Regionalism depends upon maintaining a high level of critical selfconsciousness. It may find its governing inspiration in such things as the range and quality of the local light, or in a tectonic derived from a peculiar structural mode, or in the topography of a given site. Cliff & Sea

Critical Regionalism

Site: Raynisfjara, Iceland CORE

auditory This project is situated at Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach in Iceland, where its unique natural landscape became the primary focus of my initial design. The concept of embedding architecture along the cliffs was formed through an examination of the site's geology, envisioning the surrounding steep rock walls and expansive sea views, and enabling visitors to perceive the site from multiple perspectives. The indoor spaces within the museum area, woven with the interplay of light and shadow, offer visitors not only convenient access to the local scenery, with nearby accessible rock formations and sea-facing observation platforms but also provide a place for inner reflection. In the visitor center area, after exploring local woodcraft techniques and combining them with China's Song Dynasty 'through-tenon arch construction technique,' a steel and wood hybrid structure in the shape of the Chinese character ' 人 ' ('ren,' meaning 'people') was eventually developed. This craftsmanship practice is also referred to as 'Small Materials, Large Structure'.

The plan primarily takes into account three main landscape orientations, namely inland lakes, coastal black sand beaches, and marine areas.

The three main control axes generated by the surrounding mountain terrain determine the architectural form's flow on the site.

The building control line is determined according to the trend of hills on both sides, and the central axis is added to connect with the main path to the site.

6.Gallery and Observation Deck

Within the architecture, the key consideration is to balance the relationship between the existing mountain and the structure itself. The integration of the building with the mountain creates a unique local landscape for visitors to experience during their exploration.

In the exterior of the building, gallery are arranged around the structure from two starting points, intersecting at the edge of the cliff to create an observation deck, allowing visitors to have a panoramic view of the entire coastline.

Timber Roof Structure The steel and timber structure roof located at the Visitor Center has a maximum span of 20 meters, with both steel and wood components working together as structural elements. In the timber structure section, reference was made to the Song Dynasty's through-tenon arch construction technique, with the theme of the wooden structure units inspired by the Chinese character ' 人 ' (meaning'human'). The individual timber members have a cross-sectional size of 100mm×100mm. The timber elements are primarily connected through joinery, with some areas utilizing frictional connections, allowing for easy disassembly and reusability. This approach, which allows for large structures to be created using small materials, is known as 'xiao liao da gou'(meaning'Small Materials, Large Structure') in traditional Chinese construction methods. 11

The Theory of Wool Algorithm The analogue model finds the minimal path system, that is, the system connects a distributed set of given points, thus the overall length of the path system is minimised. Each point is reached but there is a considerable imposition of detours between some pairs of points. The system is a tree (branching system) without any redundant connections. Frei Otto, Apparatus for computing minimal path systems, Institute for Lightweight Structures (ILEK), Stuttgart, 1988 Depending on the adjustable parameter of the thread’s sur-length, the apparatus – through the fusion of threads – computes a solution that significantly reduces the overall length of the path system while maintaining a low average detour factor. Marek Kolodziejczyk, Wool-thread model to compute optimised detour path networks, Institute for Lightweight Structures (ILEK), Stuttgart, 1991

Commercial In the process of form exploration, I used the canopy shape as a reference prototype. Starting from the initial point, after passing through each point, there was a branching at ±5°, proceeding from the initial branching point to the connecting line, and finally simplifying to create a specific area. QUESTION

Site: Ritan, Chaoyang District ,Beijing, China

This project is located in the economic hub of Beijing, Chaoyang District. The existing structure on the site was the Ritan International Trade Center. Despite its prime location in a prosperous and demographically diverse area, my initial impression upon entering the site was one of economic stagnation and chaotic circulation. After conducting a study of the site's surrounding functions and analyzing the demographics of the population, I decided to revitalize the site's energy through commercial activation while exploring new approaches to the development of a future international residential and commercial complex. By employing the theory of the 'Wool Algorithm' within parametric design, I examined the factors affecting the site's surroundings and interior, simulating pedestrian paths during various key time periods throughout the day. This information served as the basis for redefining the site layout, effectively addressing the issues of passive public spaces and disorganized foot traffic. Furthermore, during my exploration of topological studies, I used parametric techniques to iterate apertures, thus transforming the planar forms into organic facades, representing an exploration of future community morphology.

This project involves the renovation and design of the former Beijing Heavy Electric Machinery Factory. Situated in the old industrial area of Fengtai District in Beijing, the central challenge of this design was to balance the preservation of industrial heritage structures with their adaptive reuse. After analyzing the distribution of surrounding residential areas and the demographic composition of the population, the idea emerged to transform the industrial plant into a comprehensive sports and recreational complex. After assessing the current state of the factory and envisioning its future functions, the original structural frame of the factory was retained while the brick exterior walls were replaced with ETFE movable membrane frameworks. This not only allowed for a diverse combination of functions within the building but also provided a flexible space for presentations in the auditorium on the east side, further aligning with the "youthful" demographic structure of the surrounding area.

This project is situated on a hillside surrounded by a temple, where the owner, driven by a unique pursuit of Zen Buddhism, acquired this site for their retirement. Standing on the hill, the cool breeze temple in front, the Zhengguo Temple at the mountaintop, and the cluster of temples at the foot of the mountain left a deep impression on me, thus providing the basis for the project's design axis. After numerous interactions with the owner and a profound understanding of Zen Buddhism, the design strikes a balance between meditation and living patterns, while harmonizing with the surroundings and topography. Drawing inspiration from the elements of Japanese Wabi-Sabi design, the fusion of cast-in-place concrete and wooden lattice windows creates a distinctive play of sunlight within the interior. Living here allows one to truly experience the Zen philosophy of 'Seeing one's nature and becoming a Buddha directly points to the human mind.
