MASTERS’ THESIS

ENVIRONMENTAL POTENTIAL

I completed my Master in Architecture with distinction at the University of Pretoria in 2015 with a dissertation focusing on the contestation of the most prestigious and honoured building in Pretoria, the Union Buildings, and challenging social and past political notions and intercepting with a new programme that embraces collectivism. Realising the need for a broader knowledge of architecture and all its complexities related to heritage, I am pursuing a second Masters degree in Conservation in the Built Env for 2020 . I joined SAOTA in 2016 and was tasked as part of the production team, with international projects mostly based in the US and abroad. I have held a lecturing position at Vega School of Branding in Cape Town for the undergrad programme, and I am currently a tutor at the University of Cape Town’s Architecture School.

The disparities of South Africa force us as architects to not only consider areas highly developed and self sufficient but to also look into informal settlements to trying to create formalised spaces in the aim of bettering lives.

GVMNT PRINTING WORKSHERITAGE

The house has a singular unifying butterfly roof that soars above the second floor level. The residence offers an indoor outdoor experience, and allows both to blur into each other. The setting is well suited for a vast pool area to enjoy views to the city

ARCHITECTURAL INTENT The intention of the project is based on shifting people’s perceptions. The architecture plays with the notion of heights, dark and lights, scale and shifted perceptions, and openness and closure. The user will have to confront such spaces, to be able to test himself regarding the history.

v

Programme A film academy for the production of pasts. A virtual reconstruction of history and memory. The history of South Africa is re-enacted through dead presidents, leaders, politicians. This could even play out to form dialogues between old street names and new street names. Shifting perceptions is an experimental project, based on overlaying. By blurring boundaries, we metaphorically shift perceptions, to allow for users to understand and accept both black history and European history. This is a place that reconstructs history, reconstructs histories of architecture and histories of the culture of South Africa. The connection between this and church square is heightened by the use of holograms, activating street corners where spaces are un-programmed, and creating virtual routes and tours leading people to and fro church square. The un programmed spaces allow for vendors and hawkers to take charge of this, and use to their advantage to draw in tourists for his small scale enterprise.

v

Vision Relationships between memory and history in the public realm, insertion of an idea in the streetscape generates a conversation or influence a point of view. A visual narrative, as well as sensorial spaces. To blur the boundaries between realms, to define spaces without physical boundaries but rather shifting from space to space without noticing it has different accommodation. Creating soft thresholds for the inclusion of everyone.

The Old Government Printing works subjugated black history, and denied any kind of story denoting to the black man’s history. With this suppression of knowledge, the new function or programme gives leeway for the same apartheid regime to give answers as to who they are and what they did to be able to do right what was once wrong. To be able to listen to what everyone has to say

v Christiaan Barnard performed the first heart surgery. A new mixed use building is proposed for future use. How can we commemorate what was once a world renowned setting for a heart transplant, but soon to be become a distant memory?

v

CITY PARK FACADE

The proposal becomes a ‘facade memorabilia’ of articulating the heart beat rate, and allowing it to live with the building and play with the elements of the earth to force the building to dance to the rhythm of the skies.

This was a study to generate a house by first exploring structure and allowing the functions and ordering of the interior spaces to be framed around the structural system. The structural integrity allows for an open plan space. The most important element of the home- the fireplace receives prominence and made sculptural. More importantly the importance to maintain a plan-to-elevation relationship was crucial experiencing the form vertically and laterally.

NOTES Construction

170

To achieve a seamless finish of Natural Stone between the central structural wall and the stairs finish, a concealed steel stringer is inserted to the framework, of which the treads will be bolted to, which comprise of steel sections.

0' - 1"

The stringer would either come pre-fabricated with integrated welded steel treads or with integrated lugs which can be used to accept individual steel treads. The latter scenario may suit the phasing of the work.

0' - 2"

F02

F02

Each tread can be clad individually with mitred stone sections.

F01

Underside of tread can be clad in a much thinner finish of stone, to save cost and minimize depth/thickness of tread.
