Big day: Students discuss their results

Students among the country’s best again FOREST GATE Community School posted outstanding GCSE results this year – once again putting it among the best performing in the country. More than half of pupils at the school achieved grades 7-9, the equivalent of A* and As under the old grading system. The government benchmark Progress 8 score, which measures progress between starting and leaving school, was plus 0.95, close to a grade higher than expected. More than three-quarters of students, 76 per cent, scored grades 9-4 in maths and English, the equivalent of a pass mark under the old system. Last year, the school was ranked sixth-best in the country and out-performed all other schools in the borough. This is the first time the exams in England have been graded from 1 to 9, after reforms were put in place to make the tests more

challenging. Associate Headteacher Ms Whelan said: “It’s another excellent year for the students at FGCS. Yet again students who have come to our school leave with, on average, one whole grade better than other schools. “Thanks to the hard work and drive of

students and staff we are consistently able to ensure students exceed their potential year after year and leave us with some of the top results in the country. It is life-changing for the students and their families and a boon for the local community. I am very proud of what this school continues to achieve.”

Brave Alison achieves top grades Alison Bocosa Roca scored high grades despite suffering from a heart condition that saw her miss three exams. She achieved the 7, 8 and 9 grades require to study A-Levels in September. She thanked the school for helping her through the stress of exams. She said: “I am pleased to have done

so well given the circumstances. It was a stressful period but the school were amazing at helping me come through it. “I am now looking forward to doing A-Levels and continuing my studies. “I will be sad to leave Forest Gate Community because it is such a good school.”
