is all about showing up. Time to tentatively step away from our screens for longer than we’ve recently dared and relish in the tangible and physical offerings that we’ve all missed so much. In addition to our headquarters at the Greve de Lecq Barracks, the newest jewel in our crown, ArtHouse Jersey at Capital House, is a multipurpose exhibition and performance space that will enable us to share work and experiences in the very heart of St. Helier. Our hope is that it will make our work far more accessible than it’s ever been.

So read this highlights programme, absorb the details and begin to harass your friends and families to make some memorable arts & culture plans and memories for 2022. Heaven knows, we all deserve it.

Arthouse Jersey Team Message

We’ll continue to explore important topics that affect the lives of our collective community, from unconscious bias (What Do You See? by The PappyShow) to inclusion (Home) and the health of the environment (Skipton Big Ideas: Where Waste Meets Design), while continuing to invest in and showcase artists of all mediums from right across the Island and around the world (everything else!). We truly believe that there is something for everyone in our programme, with even more great surprises lined up for later in the year.

Arthouse Jersey Pop-Ups ‘ArtHouse Jersey Pop-Up’ is a series of six pop up art exhibitions featuring local artists scattered across the year that take place at our HQ. The project invites people to ‘pop up’ to our HQ at Greve de Lecq Barracks to enjoy the work of artists in our unique exhibition space. It also offers visitors the chance to get a better insight into artists’ work and practices and perhaps purchase something special.

The Starving Artist By Ally Zlatar The Starving Artist is an art exhibition where Canadian artist Ally Zlatar shares her collection of paintings that focus on her experiences of living with disordered eating.

The exhibition will be open to the public with workshops and talks within schools and targeted community groups also taking place.

Exploring how the making of art suggests the human condition is more complex than is currently understood, Zlatar examines the notion of the individual experience by focusing on the themes of illness, vulnerability, and authenticity of one’s lived experience.

ArtHouse Jersey at Capital House is a brand new, multipurpose arts space for St Helier. Nestled behind The Royal Square and next door to St Helier Town Church, the ground floor of this Brutalist building will be run and programmed by the ArtHouse Jersey team, throwing their knowledge and passion into the content and offering the Island a brand new space for arts and creativity in town. Expect visual arts, dance, music, drama, film, poetry and everything else in between. There will be content to see in the space all year round, so as well as reading this programme be sure to keep checking in on www.arthousejersey.je to keep an eye on what’s on, what's coming up and the opening times for all events and exhibitions.

8 APRIL- 21 APRIL (Tuesday - Sunday) 10am - 4pm Le Moulin de Quétivel

The exhibition has been kindly been supported by the National Trust for Jersey.

Until You Became Me is an exhibition exploring how water connects us to each other and our environments.

The artists will create an immersive space which invites visitors to consider themselves as bodies of water, constantly in flux and intimately connected with others and with their surroundings.

A collaboration between local artist Karen Le Roy Harris, London-based artist, Miriam Sedacca, and London-based musician, Heather Ryall, the artworks featured will include sculpture, installation, performance, sound and film. After touring water and tidal mills in Stroud and London, the exhibition will arrive at Le Moulin de Quétivel, the only working historical water mill on the Island.

Jason Butler: One To One We live in a frenetic world of social media, instant messaging and global connectivity. Many people find it difficult to take a moment to stop and reflect. Maybe, like most people, you’ve been to an exhibition or museum, but not felt like you’ve really ‘seen’ or connected with any of the work inside. And maybe you’ve found yourself wondering how people can get so excited about a particular painting or artwork when it leaves you feeling nothing. If so, this exhibition is for you.

Jason Butler: One To One

ArtHouse Jersey is providing the opportunity for people to spend time one-on-one with a sensational piece of art without any noise or distractions. Having been granted exclusive access to Jason Butler’s latest extraordinary collection of paintings, we will be showcasing a selection of this work, whilst providing viewers the opportunity to spend an extended period of time in complete solitude with one canvas. There is no secret or trick. In Jason’s work the different layers, textures and colours continuously shift. The more that you look, the more you will see. Your own imagination will bring the painting to life.

POP UP EXHIBITION

Nina Zeach & Lexie Taylor Our spring pop up will be a collaboration between Nina Zaech and Lexie Taylor. Nina creates minimalistic paintings and linoprints, her optical and abstract art being influenced by childhood memories having grown up in the Swiss mountains with parents who were artists. Nina explains that her work comes from the past and explores how memories shape later life. Lexie completed a BA Fashion Design degree in 2021 and her art is also inspired by memory. She combines digital media and hand drawn illustrations to create her designs. Using these skills, Lexie set up a print design business that was launched in October 2021.

Home Exhibition The ‘Home’ exhibition is the culmination of the work of three artists of Portuguese, Polish and Romanian descent who undertook a residency in Jersey early in the year.

Natalia Kalicki (Poland), Cliff Andrade (Portugal), and Dana Olarescu (Romania) came to Jersey to learn about, research and explore the lived experience of their compatriots living within each of these three significant local communities. The artworks they have created were inspired by what they experienced in Jersey. Their artworks and their testimony will inform the briefing of Gabriel Pitcher whose mural will adorn the Normans building (find more information further on).

POP UP EXHIBITION

Victor Guerin & Bethan Watkins Victor is a qualified mechanical engineer who has always been interested in production processes and precise craftsmanship. His art is a blend of his attraction to nature, colours, spaces, and techniques. Bethan is a painter and a poet. Her work follows the theme of ‘ living earth’ with oil and acrylic paintings showcasing nature’s and human consciousness. Both artists will be in attendance all weekend to talk to visitors about their work and processes.

13 JUNE 2022 ONWARDS

Home Mural Home is a large-scale public artwork that will adorn the facade of Normans builders merchants from 13 June 2022. Covering the 600m² frontage of the iconic Normans building, the mural, created by celebrated artist Gabriel Pitcher, will use this giant canvas will be inspired by the ‘Home’ residency project of our Polish, Portuguese and Romanian communities' experience of living here in Jersey. The work is being created in response to the ’Home’ residency which saw three artists, one from each country, get to know and understand the experiences of their compatriots who have chosen to make the Island their home. The ‘Home’ mural is a celebration of Jersey’s immigrant communities' contribution to Island life, and the modern, multicultural place that we all call home. Gabriel is an exciting street artist with experience and expertise in telling the story of a community through his murals that have been commissioned all over the world. His paternal roots link him with the parish of Grouville. He will be assisted by a number of local muralists who will help him bring the wall to life over a two week period in June.

This large-scale mural is produced in partnership with Wood Street Walls CIC, who have created murals across the world with renowned artists in support of not for profits and local community.

SKIPTON BIG IDEAS

Where Waste Meets Design What opportunities are we missing to successfully utilise waste in Jersey? Can we throw away less, place greater value on what we already have and give unwanted items a second life?

Where Waste Meets Design

With support from Skipton International, ArtHouse Jersey invites Islanders to engage with the work of local and international artists and designers, who use waste as their primary material, whilst they work directly within the exhibition space. Over a five week period, these makers will be producing one-off art and design pieces and inviting the community to take part in workshops. Collectively we will build a rich, thought-provoking exhibition from waste. We will consider the challenges we face, how we can be more mindful in what we consume and the impact our consumption has on the environment. Keep an eye on www.arthousejersey.je for details.

Lindsay Rutter Lindsay Rutter is a ceramic and mixed media artist who recently completed a degree in design as a mature student. She views art as a meditative process which she uses to explore relationships, sexuality and mental health, all influenced by travel. For example, her Bali pot series explores the end of a relationship whilst traveling in Indonesia, whilst her ceramic and print designs were inspired by the contrast of architecture and street art in Kraków Poland. PAUL JOHN KILSHAW

Entr’-Acte Variations Paul John Kilshaw is renowned on the Jersey art scene and has done over forty solo exhibitions, locally and internationally. This year, as Paul is turning 75, he has painted and drawn for 62 years. He gained his degree in 1968 at the Manchester College of Art where he found his love for abstract expressionism. This exhibition will focus on a series of large-scale oil paintings created during the pandemic. The symbolism of these abstract works was influenced by his experiences and emotions surrounding Covid-19. They record Paul’s inner thoughts about the spread of the virus and the isolation of lockdown.

The Map Of Wonders Exhibition This exhibition will be a celebration of the work undertaken by primary school children in Jersey during The Map of Wonders project and beyond.

The Map of Wonders is the first project within the Genesis Education Programme, a joint partnership project between ArtHouse Jersey and the Government of Jersey’s Department for Children, Young People, Education and Skills (CYPES). The project is currently rolling out its second series of films and content in schools across the Island. Each series has had its own very distinct themes. Series 1 focuses on tales and folklore from Jersey’s past, while series 2 focuses on celebrations around the world and Jersey communities.

What Do You See? by The Pappyshow

Presented by ArtHouse Jersey in partnership with Royal Bank of Canada

“What do you see?’ is a new piece of theatre devised by the celebrated contemporary, physical theatre company, ‘The Pappy Show’. The piece explores diversity, inclusion and personal unconscious bias. What Do You See? by the Pappyshow ArtHouse Jersey

Directed, created, designed and performed by a whole community of London based representative voices, it embodies the company’s belief that the most diverse rooms are the richest and most likely to thrive. This work celebrates the diverse identities of ‘The Pappy Show’, and builds on the research they have been carrying out with different community groups over the past three years, including time spent in residence with ArtHouse Jersey. The show aims to provoke a wider discussion on how our individual life experiences have led us to seeing the world through a particular lens. It provokes questions on stereotyping, equity, noting the varying privileges our lives are built upon and the different starting points each of our audiences have. Artists in Residence ArtHouse Jersey

This initiative sees talented local artists matched with charities to offer creative activities and inspiration to their clients. The project comes from a recognition that artistic activity enriches our lives in simple yet profound ways. Jersey is blessed with many talented creatives and when selecting artists to act as creative facilitators, we seek to match an artist’s unique skill set to the particular needs of the partner charity. Our partners for 2022 include Mind Jersey, La Passarelle and the Jersey Deaf Society. We are open to working with other charities to marry more artists with deserving community organisations on Island.

Roaming Soundtrack You may already be aware of Roaming Soundtrack, a project that saw ArtHouse Jersey invite celebrated DJ and festival promoter Rob Da Bank (creator of BESTIVAL) to curate a soundtrack of six pieces of music written by a variety of established music and spoken-word artists to accompany iconic Jersey vistas. The locations, listening posts and music are still very much in place so if you haven’t yet taken the audio visual adventure, we invite you to take a bespoke music journey around some of the Island’s most beautiful locations, whilst immersing yourself in stunning nature and evocative sounds.These tracks are available to download from most major streaming platforms. FUNDING FOR ARTISTS

We provide financial support to local artists of all disciplines for skills development and the creation of exciting new work. Over the past year we have invested in visual arts, drama, dance, filmmaking, sculpture, music production and more. Local creatives as well as artists with links to Jersey are welcome to apply. There are four rounds of funding each calendar year: 1 February, 1 May, 1 August, 1 November. WORKSHOPS

You Me & The Sea Workshops: You Me & The Sea ArtHouse Jersey

You Me & the Sea is a series of art based workshops for groups of children aged 8 and 11. The workshop curriculum was designed by Jacque Rutter with support from Karen Le Roy Harris and has benefitted from the input of the Senior Adviser for Curriculum (CYPES) Kate Sugden. The project aims to reach children who stand to benefit the most from participating. Some have been selected because they show particular promise in the arts, whilst others because ordinarily they’d not have the opportunity to be involved in such an initiative. The project has been designed to encourage students to build confidence, harness their imaginations and work as a team.
