ArtHouse Jersey: A taste of 2021

We’d be lying if we said that ArtHouse Jersey, much like every organisation on our fair isle, wasn’t thrown by the arrival of COVID19. But despite the very obvious challenges, we have managed to remain positive and look for opportunities as well as navigate around restrictions. Islanders need art and creativity and we’ve tried to produce a largely pandemic proof programme for 2021. These are our current plans to deliver arts-for-all in Jersey; a riot of vibrancy, inclusion, innovation, quality and dare we say... a little fun. Read on to learn more about Skipton Big Ideas, an mammoth interdisciplinary exhibition inviting local and international artists, architects & designers to collaborate in creating three dimensional art; Sound of Colour, an audiovisual collaboration culminating in a spectacular music and projection extravaganza; and Roaming Soundtrack, a bespoke listening project curated by DJ & festival honcho Rob Da Bank where Jersey’s nature and specially commissioned music combine. We exist to serve our community and throughout the year we will be working with schools through The Genesis Education Programme, connecting with the elderly

Our crystal ball is a little smudged right now, so do be sure to subscribe to our newsletter and keep checking in on our website and social media channels for all the latest news and developments on these fantastic projects. Here’s to 2021!

through Cake & Cabaret and offering our inclusive performing arts project, Mavericks. Our work with Paper Dialogues continues to tour the world and closer to home we’ll be showcasing some of the most exciting local artists at our HQ at Greve de Lecq Barracks over the year.

ArtHouse Jersey Pop Up #1 with Jodie Carney & Nick Partlett ‘ArtHouse Jersey Pop Up’ is a new series of pop up exhibitions featuring local artists. The project invites people to ‘pop up’ to our HQ at Greve de Lecq Barracks to enjoy the work of artists in our unique exhibition space. It also offers visitors the chance to get a better insight into artists’ work and practices and perhaps purchase something special. The first of the year sees Jodie Carney and Nick Partlett share

the space, hosting an exhibition of specifically selected, natureinspired paintings, drawings and glass work. The viewer will be able to explore the work from all angles, in a graceful, delicate and relaxing environment.

February at Greve De Lecq Barracks: Juliet St John Nicolle Exhibition Juliet St John Nicolle, who was diagnosed with Autism when she was 50, has a long standing passion for art.

She was awarded artist support through the ArtHouse Jersey Funding scheme and will be creating new print works for this upcoming exhibition at ArtHouse Jersey’s HQ at Greve de Lecq Barracks, alongside work she has created since lockdown and her 30 exhibition books.

Memory Boxes A key focus for ArtHouse Jersey is to make the arts accessible to all, but how can you create memorable and magical experiences for people who are not able to leave their homes? The only answer can be to deliver the art to their door …

Up to twenty five prototype boxes will initially be produced, which will tour directly to people’s homes in the cold winter months of January and February. Working with our partners from Cake and Cabaret we will be particularly targeting those who fall into the ‘more vulnerable’ category of the covid-scale and are currently living in isolation. The boxes are built to last and can be recycled and replenished so we expect them to bring some cheer to hundreds of people.

If you know someone who might truly benefit from this bespoke experience then please contact emma@arts.je to register for a place.

ArtHouse Jersey has commissioned Thomas Buckley (the lead artist behind ‘Society of Cocktails’ and an associate of the Royal Shakespeare Company) to design bespoke ‘memory boxes’ that can be delivered directly to people’s homes and ignite all of a recipient’s senses to bring a story to life. Whilst they will cleverly employ technology through sound, projection and augmented reality, they will feel tactile and will be simple to use. Each will contain packages with scents and objects to add a visceral connection to the narrative being told.

ArtHouse Jersey Pop Up #2 with Bianca Padidar & Ariel Luke The second ArtHouse Jersey Pop Up exhibition brings together two female artists, Bianca Padidar and Ariel Luke.

Children’s Creative Retreats We’re delighted to welcome the return of this project which was designed in direct response to an identified need from key experts from the Department of Children, Young People, Education and Skills (CYPES) for there to be a more equal provision of cultural and creative activities for children across the primary sector.

We wanted to offer children an opportunity to discover their own creative skills whilst celebrating those of their peers in a dynamic and stimulating environment. Supported with a grant from the One Foundation we will be able

Award-winning textile artist Bianca Padidar will showcase work from her ‘Memory on Cloth’ collection, which is a mixture of cyanotype photo prints onto fabric and a collection of indigo dyed shibori cloth. Both methods are only possible using the air and the sun to reveal the imagery of patterns. Her work brings to life a personal ‘memory on cloth’ that is reminiscent of the complexity and beauty of the natural environment.

Ariel Luke studied at Wimbledon School of Art. She then exhibited with the young contemporaries at the Royal Academy and at other venues in London. For the next decade she concentrated mainly on screen printing and showing at several galleries in London. She has also shown her work in Sydney, Bahrain, Hong Kong and New York. This Pop Up will see her screen prints come to life, giving space for the local community to enjoy.

to offer this unique opportunity to over 100 students attending St. Helier primary schools. Keep an eye on our website www. arthousejersey.je for more details and dates of the 2021 edition of Children’s Creative Retreats.

Mavericks Roaming Soundtrack ArtHouse Jersey has invited celebrated DJ and festival promoter Rob Da Bank (creator of BESTIVAL) to curate a soundtrack of up to six pieces of music written by a variety of established music and spoken-word artists to accompany iconic Jersey vistas.

We invite you to take a magical, bespoke audio journey around some of the Island’s most iconic, beautiful locations, while immersing yourself in stunning nature and beautiful sounds. These tracks will be available to download from a major streaming platform.

The needs of children requiring extra care can be overlooked when it comes to after school clubs or activities as the care and support required often makes facilitating a regular class difficult. ArtHouse Jersey approached Jessie and Thanda Mutero of ‘A Little Extra Love’ and funded a specialised training course that equipped them with the skills needed to offer accessible and inclusive performing arts classes for islanders.

‘Mavericks’, was subsequently designed by ‘A Little Extra Love’ to remove barriers to entry, while also inspiring a new generation to discover the transformative power of artistic expression. Open to children with disabilities, special needs or in need of any additional care, from 6 to 18, the classes take place at Mont à l’Abbé school and are supported financially by Enable Jersey.

In 2019 ArtHouse Jersey met with representatives from Enable Jersey and Health and Social Services about making participation in the arts more accessible to all young people.

ArtHouse Jersey Pop Up #3 with Will Lakeman May’s ArtHouse Jersey Pop Up invites Jersey-born writer and photographer Will Lakeman to our HQ at Greve de Lecq Barracks. Will uses colour photography and image manipulation to tell unusual stories while exploring the subliminal landscape of his dreams and senses.

His pop-up event in 2021 will showcase parts of a large project that reinterprets our fading memories of Jersey landmarks and the strange rituals conducted by people who cannot bear to leave the past behind. The event is planned to feature interactive elements in the form

of a game, as Will is also writing a role-playing game set in a fictional island that just happens to resemble Jersey. There will also be a sensory element to the event, evoking the smells and textures of our half-remembered past. The show will include some work produced in collaboration with artificial intelligence.

Genesis Education Programme (The Map Of Wonders) The Map of Wonders is the first project within the Genesis Education Programme, a partnership between ArtHouse Jersey and the Government of Jersey’s Department for Children, Young People, Education and Skills (CYPES).

The programme seeks to improve the wellbeing of school children today, by encouraging communication and relationship building through creative collaborative work, all the while raising the standard of arts and creative education across all of Jersey’s primary schools. The Map of Wonders was launched in Autumn of 2020 and spans across the entire academic year until June 2021. ArtHouse Jersey has produced seven films that set out quests for children and their teachers, all drawing inspiration from Jersey’s past and rich folklore tradition. The films are presented by locally born performer and funny-man John Henry Falle AKA

‘The Storybeast’ who brings each story to life, meeting expert witnesses before handing over to an array of brilliant artists who guide the students through tasks and crafts. These include making treasure from the Le Câtillon Hoard to meeting fantastical beasts such as the native crapaud and the St Clements Bull, and exploring the saving of our planet through the magic of the Island’s hedgerows. These seven stories promote our heritage, environment and culture to the children of Jersey, enhancing their sense of connection to their surroundings and therefore, sense of belonging. They are fun too of course and provide teachers with plenty of resources to explore each topic further.

Visit the Genesis Education Programme page over at www.arthousejersey.com for the latest project news and to see examples of these wonderful films. ArtHouse Jersey

The Dinosaurs Are Coming! An Exhibition by Lulu MacDonald Fine artist and sculptor Lulu MacDonald is returning to her childhood home of Jersey to present her installation exhibition ‘The Dinosaurs Are Coming’, commissioned by ArtHouse Jersey, along with an accompanying outreach programme of community workshops.

Exploring what it means to be living on the brink of multiple extinctions, the show examines the toxic love affair of both cherishing and grieving the ground. Caught between two stools, the show juxtaposes our paradoxical urges to give back by rewilding the earth with our capitalist ‘take take take’ mindset as we grapple with various global crises.

The exhibition narrates love stories, both harmful and healthy, to illuminate the reality of our current predicament. Orbiting the installation will be a number of outreach workshops which will explore how, by changing our physicality and the way we take up space in the world, we can empathetically transform.

ArtHouse Jersey

ArtHouse Jersey

20

In a world bearing the brunt of the climate emergency, a pandemic and escalating natural disasters, the artist asks: “How, in this painful moment of loss and transition, can this be an opportunity for change?” In her academic reflection ‘Somewhere Between A Rock And A Hard Place’ and throughout the

installation, the artist suggests that we should resign ourselves to becoming compost – not a complete death – but surrendering our struggle as a gesture back to the Earth that we’ve hurt. For the artist, this is activism in its most raw form; decaying organic material which goes on to foster, nurture and fertilise future crops.

ArtHouse Jersey Pop Up #4 with La Folie Collective Managed by ArtHouse Jersey, the Shell House at La Folie is tucked away amongst the old harbour setting of St Helier, providing dedicated studio spaces for local artists, This Pop Up will unite ArtHouse Jersey’s creative hubs, bringing work from the artists who call La Folie home to our Greve de Lecq Barracks site.

With a mix of different artists, this Pop Up will bring together a wide range of mediums and styles in one exciting mix.

Cake & Cabaret Cake and Cabaret is a portable cabaret show with high tea for the over 65’s touring the Island’s parish halls. During 2020 ArtHouse Jersey delivered a digital ‘Covid-19 safe’ version of the hugely popular series, that was delivered directly to the homes of elderly Islanders living independently in the form of specially-produced DVDs.

With the ongoing support of the One Foundation, in 2021 we fully intend to return with our physical variety shows, enabling easier access to high quality entertainment for older Islanders, providing the chance to have fun and socialise in a welcoming environment while enjoying a professionally produced show. Full details will become available through our website www.arthousejersey.je and your nearest parish hall!

ArtHouse Jersey Pop Up #5 with Conor Daly The fifth ArtHouse Jersey Pop Up of 2021 will see Connor Daly showcase his incredible project, ‘Spatial Visions’. The work invites the viewer to consider a different perspective to every day form.

Connor Daly is a British photographer based in London, UK, originally from Jersey. He graduated from the Arts University Bournemouth in 2017 with a BA Hons in Photography. Between 2018-20, he worked as a freelance assistant to a variety of commercial photographers, whilst pursuing his own projects, notably Spatial Visions (2017-present) & Inner Spaces (2019). His work reflects upon a continually evolving critical language, exploring a collective & individual experience of the human condition. Of his work Daly says “When I make pictures, I look for something that is beyond what is immediately apparent. I explore the instances where familiarity meets the unknown, by which the viewer may experience a sense of intimacy, as well as awe and a transcendence of the self.” ArtHouse Jersey

Skipton Big Ideas Skipton Big Ideas is the centrepiece of our 2021 programme. It is an installation exhibition on a scale and level of ambition unlike Jersey has ever seen before!

We will be transforming the already reverential interior and grounds of the St. Helier Town Church into a bespoke gallery featuring sculpture, light, augmented reality, sound and interactive installations. Expect pieces that you can step inside of, walk through, play with and that perhaps make you feel provoked, inspired, challenged and even enlightened. The exhibition will be open to all and free to attend thanks to the generous sponsorship of Skipton International. Back in the covid-free days of 2019 ArtHouse Jersey commissioned over 40 local and international artists, architects and designers

to create work that responds to the world they see around them with a particular focus on identity, sustainability and accessibility. When the exhibition had to be postponed in 2020 it gave the artists more time to reflect on these themes and how they relate to this new world that we see around us as we continue to adapt to life in a pandemic. Some of these themes may have had less air time in recent months with the coverage being focussed on covid, the elections, Brexit and social unrest, but they still speak to the heart of our challenge as a community and feel even more pertinent and universally relevant now than ever before.

Sound Of Colour Sound of Colour is our ongoing experiment with sight and sound, which will culminate in a spectacular music and projection extravaganza, coming to Jersey in the autumn of 2021.

ArtHouse Jersey has commissioned internationally renowned projection designer and creative director Akhila Krishnan to create a visual spectacle unlike anything the Island has seen before. Akhila has worked on projects for the London Olympics Opening Ceremony, Somerset House, Channel 4 and The Sydney Opera House, to name but a few. Originally from India but now living and working in London, her work explores the possibilities that technology offers to take narrative and story-telling beyond the screen, bringing it into live spaces via shared experiences.

ArtHouse Jersey

30

The final piece created by Akhila, exploring themes of identity and sense of place, will be projected onto the ceiling of the St. Helier Town Church, amongst the installations of the Skipton Big Ideas exhibition, transforming the space with stunning visuals and transporting the audience beyond the walls of the venue for a truly ‘one off’ experience. The projection will be accompanied by a unique, original score by a soon-to-be-announced, Jersey born producer and composer, featuring special guest musicians.

Tickets will be limited so be sure to look out for announcements through our newsletter and on social media.

Paper Dialogues to tour the USA Since we brought the spectacular ‘Paper Dialogues’ exhibition to our shores, transforming the St. Helier Town Hall into a bespoke exhibition space in 2016, ArtHouse Jersey has commissioned Jersey-born artists Emma Reid and Layla May Arthur to add their own interpretations of the ‘dragon’ to the original works by Professor Xiaoguang Qiao and Karen Bit Vejle.

Throughout 2019 all of the works were displayed at the Museum for Papirkunst in Blokhus, Denmark, gaining both critical acclaim and delighting tens of thousands of visitors. In 2021 this exhibition will begin its tour of the US with its first stop at the Nordic Museum in Seattle from October 2021 until February 2022 when it will

travel to the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis from February until July 2022 with further stops being planned from there. Needless to say that this is an exciting opportunity for all of the artists involved and we are delighted for our commissioned work to be reaching such broad new audiences.

ArtHouse Jersey Pop Up #6 with Danny Booth Danny Booth is a Fine Art graduate whose practice embraces an extensive range of materials and techniques including mixed media, painting, drawing and sculpture. As well as his Fine Art practise Danny also has been involved in many community based Arts projects including set design, murals, public art installations and workshops.

Danny’s work takes inspiration from nature and his personal experiences whilst walking. Although the work is made at a later date in the studio memory is an important aspect of the work. Expressive marks and thick impasto paint are built up frantically to convey the textures and depth of the landscape. Although the work is figurative in nature abstract forms appear through the mark making and layering process he applies to the surface.
