LOT 62 Persian Stone Idol

Iran, Caspian Sea region, late 2nd to early 1st millennium BCE

Carved greenstone steatopygous figure.  Large hips indicate this was most definitely a type of fertility idol.  Her headdress is deliberately cut with a vertical slit to allow for the placement of additional ornamentation.

Storage Jar, Hare’s Fur Glaze

ca. 960 to 1279 CE

Also known as Jian ware, the subtle colors and humble origins of the glaze were said to embody Zen aesthetics and thus were favored by monks.  Hare’s Fur glazed pottery of this form/scale is exceptionally rare to find; while popular throughout the Song Dynasty, it was typically used for handheld tea bowls.  29”H.

Cast-brass statue of the wrathful deity known as a Heruka manifesting as Yab Yum with the female deity Vajravarahi.  Yabyum, literally meaning “man-woman,” is the portrayal of the tantric sexual embrace between male and female divinities and represents the pacification of spiritual polarities.

Central Java, ca. 9th century CE Estimate: $60,000 - $90,000

Volcanic stone.  Elephant-headed deity known as the “Remover of Obstacles,” who sits atop a tiered lotus base while holding shallow cups in each outer hand.  Esteemed as one of the principal deities of the Hindu pantheon, the first son of Shiva and Parvati, Ganesha is known as the Lord of Plenty or the god of auspiciousness, highly revered as the regulator of all obstacles with the power to create and remove them.  45.27”H, 400 lbs.

Burma (Myanmar), Shan culture, ca. 17th to 19th century CE

A human skull section used as Kapala in both Hinduism and Tantric (Vajrayana) Buddhism as a ritualistic vessel.  Made to hold offerings, often to wrathful deities, made from human remains that were given a sky burial - the body stripped by birds and other animals until only bones remain.

South Dakota, Harding County, Hell Creek Formation, Cretaceous, ca. 68 to 65.5 million years ago.

Probably from one of the main toes, and is a staggering 9.5” along curve from root to tip, holding this in one’s hand - it is about the size of a heifer cow horn!

An incredible fossilized piece of dinosaur anatomy, the dome from the skull of a Pachycephalosaurus. These were bipedal herbivores with small forelimbs, and they are widely known for their thick skulls.

Of grand form depicting a stylized jaguar in all its ferocity.  A pair of drilled suspension holes on the temples enabled this mask to be worn, perhaps with ceremonial or ritual connotations.

Veracruz Stone Palma (Marker for Ballgame)

Gulf Coast of Mexico, ca. 500 to 700 CE

Estimate $13,000 - $19,500

Carved by hand, in the form of a bird- perhaps an eagle or a wild turkey.  The shape fanning gives this form its name - a palma from the frond shape of palm trees.  The athletes from Mesoamerica played a ballgame while wearing a hip yoke with a palma-shaped fan made of leather, wood, or rubber to protect their chests from the impact of the hard rubber balls.

With a globular olla on verso and an incredible effigy of a priest on front, both connected via three large tubes and thick handle.  The priest presents in a nearly full shamanic transformation into a serpent being, with serpents comprising the hands, flooding out around the olla rim, and line the broad skirt flanges with two-headed versions. The removable whistle head of the larger figure presents snakes on his brow, headdress, eyebrows, and tongue to create an amazingly detailed presentation.

Fine 19th C. Cree / Ojibwe Beaded Cloth Bandolier Bag

Native American / First Nations, Northern United States / Canada, Great Lakes Region

Purely ceremonial and prestige items for decoration.  The beadwork was done by women while men generally wore the finished piece across one shoulder and resting at their hip, and they were popular amongst many Woodland tribes and traded with Southern and Plains tribes as well.  Superb beadwork!

Midewiwin Bag

Native American / First Nations, Northern United States / Canada, Winnebago / Ojibwe, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE.

Made from an entire otter - the neck slit as main opening with a cowrie shell drawstring - the tail and limbs decorated with cloth a beadwork.  Men wore the bags with the head looped over a belt.

Hawaiian royalty often valued specific calabashes - even going so far as to name them after royal individuals - and until the early 19th century they were reserved for elites in society.  In the Hawaiian language, the word koa means “fearless warrior.”

19th C. Hawaiian Octopus / Squid Lure

North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, Maui, Hana, ca. 19th century CE. Estimate $5,500 - $8,500

Used by dipping the hook into shallow water and shaking it up and down. Jostling motion would entice an octopus to wrap its tentacles around the hook end, then fisherman would pull lure upward so as to pierce creature’s hard beak, soft body, or one of many tentacles.

Anton Prinner (Franco-Hungarian, 1902-1983).

A rare and complete ceramic chess set by transgender modernist Anton Prinner, with all 32 pieces, 11 of which are marked Prinner or Vallauris on the base.  Kings, Queens, Bishops, Rooks, Knights, and Pawns present with playful poses, Egyptian iconography, as Prinner had a passion for ancient Egypt, and nude bodies, most with visible genitalia.
