- Land reclamation site

Project Azure, located on the La Mer South Peninsula in Dubai, is an exclusive beachfront development that spans approximately 175,000 sqm. The project, which includes a 60,000 sqm area dedicated to both hotel and residential components, is designed to offer a unique luxury experience that integrates upscale wellness and lifestyle amenities. The resort comprises 100 hotel keys, 20 hotel villas, and 33 branded residences, all set within a landscape that draws inspiration from the diverse geography of the UAE. The landscape design integrates natural and historical elements, incorporating xeriscaping and traditional irrigation systems to create a sustainable, eco-conscious environment. The overall design narrative emphasizes topographical changes inspired by the work of Alexander Von Humboldt, blending luxury and sustainability to craft a seamless experience that highlights the natural beauty of Dubai.

In my role on Project Azure, I worked closely with a team of six colleagues to develop the landscape design from the concept stage, ensuring that the design intent was maintained throughout the process. I collaborated directly with the architect and marine engineers to shape the peninsula, preserving the integrity of the landscape while integrating various elements, such as the marine edge and site levels. I played a key role in developing the planting strategy and enhancing the user experience, ultimately delivering the 100% Concept stage design pack on schedule. My involvement was critical in translating the design vision into a cohesive and sustainable landscape that aligns with the high standards of this luxury development.

My work on this project:

75 LONDON WALL, CITY OF LONDON- 2024

Client: Dubai Holdings

Status: Planning and coordination - Ongoing

Overview:

- A retrofit of an existing 90’s era office building

- Addition of 7 levels with outdoor terraces

- A new public realm space and community facilities

Located in the heart of the City of London, the existing building serves as the foundation for a transformative landscape architecture project. The proposal introduces a new public space, named Prior’s Garden, along the building’s southern edge. This space features a series of stepped seating areas and planters, forming an outward-facing amphitheater that opens onto the newly pedestrianized Winchester Street.

The architectural enhancements include the addition of seven new upper levels, which are crowned with extensive and intensive green roofs. These roofs are complemented by outdoor terraces of varying sizes, each adorned with architectural freestanding pots, raised planters, seating elements, and mature trees set amidst lush plantings. The terraces are configured to offer panoramic 360-degree views of London.

The design principles for the new public realm are inspired by the historic Walbrook watercourse, which once flowed through the site. This element is reinterpreted as a wayfinding feature within the space. The public square incorporates interpretive art as a focal point, enriching the pedestrian experience. These elements reflect the natural form of the original river crossing through the site and are executed in hardy, robust, and contemporary materials that harmonize with the surrounding environment. This interpretive theme may be expressed through paving, planting, or a standalone piece of art.

My work on this project:

- Ground floor public realm concept and design development

- Upper terraces design development

- Urban Greening Factor calculations across 13 levels

- Client meeting and coordination with other diciplines.

- Client presentations

CANADA WATER EASTERN DOCK EDGE, SURREY QUAYS- 2024

Client: Art-Invest Real Estate

Status: Planning and coordination - Ongoing

In April 2022, Andy Sturgeon Design was invited to a design competition for the Eastern dock edge and selected by the clients. During the competition stage, we presented our initial ideas to the London Borough of Southwark, with an aim to create a unique landscape and a clear narrative for the public realm,

Our team have taken inspiration from the history of the site to form a narrative that is sensitive to both the existing and historical context of the area. This part of the city has been defined by the presence of the water for centuries – most recently as a commercial dock. Change has also defined this part of London - from marshland, to dockland, to today’s masterplan vision.

We have taken these elements of water and change to develop a landscape narrative associated with wetland landforms. Wetlands, like river valleys and beaches, are a changing landscape made up of a series of complex layers that interact with each other. The character of a wetland changes with rising and lowering of water levels. These changes are sometimes transient, sometimes more permanent. Different plant communities are drawn to these varied surfaces, further altering and defining their character.

Surfaces that were once submerged become exposed and contract, causing desiccation cracks. We have used these crack formations to create a dynamic landscape language that responds to both the narrative and the architectural DNA of the area.

The result is an iconic and unique landscape sculpted out of a series of layers and zones. Much like the ground planes of the buildings, this landscape will form an extension of the public realm, folding out into the dock, a landscape that changes through time as it merges with the water.

-Concept development

-Site layout development.

ZONE 01 - MARGINAL

ZONE 02 - RIPARIAN

ZONE 03 - ABSTRACT NATURE

ZONE 01 - MARGINAL

Much like a wetland the planting and trees will change as the ground level rises. Zone 1 will contain species closely associated with water, some being upright, others drifting across the water plane. All will bring foliage, colour, and create habitat at this lower tier.

ZONE 02 - RIPARIAN

Zone 2 will represent the transitional riparian zone often found between water and land. This landscape typology often contains highly diverse flora and fauna and is an important habitat that is becoming increasingly rare.

03 - ABSTRACT NATURE

Finally, we see Zone 3, the uppermost level, as an abstraction of nature. These areas will be physically disconnected from the water body and therefore water loving plants would not be suitable. However, it is important that the planting relates to the waterfront character. Ornamental, perennial grasses will be mixed through the species rich planting to a create reed like character along the promenade.

THE OTHER HOUSE RESIDENTS CLUB, BELGRAVIA

- 2023

Client: The Other House Propco 3

Status: Stage 3 - Ongoing

In April 2023, Andy Sturgeon Design have been appointed by The Other House PropCo 3 to provide a landscape design for the proposed development at the former Belgravia Police Station. The Other House is a chain of boutique London apartment hotel and members clubs. This development includes a ground floor courtyard as well as an upper level outdoor amenity terrace with a bar and restaurnat facilites.

The design of the courtyard centred around an existing TPO tree located in the middle, which provided a fantastic opportunity in terms of design elements but significant challances to achieve the desired levels which connected the elevated FFL of the building and the public realm adjacent to the site.

The proposed planting palette reflects the landscape concept and the microclimate created by the buildings. The intent with the ground floor courtyard planting is to create a lush oasis. A layered approach to planting will be achieved though a selection of a variety of species, and their contrasting attributes - both in terms of scale and form. These species will also be suitable for low light levels below the canopy of the existing tree.

Glimpses of tree ferns will be visible from the restaurant and guest rooms. These Soft Tree Ferns enjoy these protected places and will be underplanted with shade loving ground covers and ferns. The street front will incorporate a layering of evergreen perennials to provide a soft, sculptural and year-round greening to Buckingham Palace Road.

My work on this project:

- Design development from concept stage

- Winding organic ramp and railing design

-Courtyard layout development.

- Site modelling

- CGI rendering

- Meeting with the client and preparation of client presentations

NEWCOMBE HOUSE ,

ROYAL BOROUGH OF KENSINGTON AND CHELSEA - 2023

Client: The Other House Propco 3

Status: Stage 3 - Ongoing

Andy Sturgeon Design have been appointed by Beltane Asset management to provide a landscape for the proposed development at Newcombe House, located in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea.

Together with my colleagues at Andy Sturgeon I have been working with Squires & Partners Architects and the rest of the consultant team to develop a brief and a high quality landscape design as a public amenity to accompany this office development and public realm.

The Newcombe House Development presents a unique opportunity to enhance the tree-lined character and overall quality of the public realm in Notting Hill Gate. By introducing new street trees and preserving the existing ones, the landscape proposal will contribute to unifying the green corridors along Bayswater Road and Holland Park Avenue. This development strategically integrates a series of external spaces designed to create inviting public open areas, benefiting both visitors to the building and the broader community, thereby reinforcing the natural and cohesive aesthetic of the area.

50 STRATTON STREET, MAYFAIR,

LONDON - 2023

Client: Lazard Asset Management

Status: Stage 4 - Under construction

50 Stratton Street is undergoing a comprehensive retrofit, including refurbishment and extension of an existing office building originally constructed in 2002, situated in the heart of Mayfair, adjacent to Green Park Station. This nine-story development features additional terraced upper floors are designed to reduce embodied carbon while providing enhanced outdoor spaces. These terraces, located on levels 6 through 9, include a sky lobby and rooftop terrace that promote well-being and expand green space. Raised planters extend across the entire span of the parapet, with vertical greening strategically incorporated to maximize greenery while avoiding louver walls and M&E extractions. Benches and trees are integrated into additional raised planters to further enhance the upper levels.

For this project, I oversaw the production of the Stage 4 construction detail package, working closely with the architects (Stiff + Trevillion), M&E consultants, suppliers, and other members of the production and client teams. My responsibilities included developing construction details for various hard landscaping elements on the terraces, such as pedestal paving, as well as integrating raised planters, irrigation, and drainage systems into the balustrade and parapet elements. This approach ensures that each unit can be easily removed for maintenance while prioritizing the longevity and health of the planting. The construction detail package was submitted at the end of 2023, and the project is currently under construction.

BANSTEAD PLACE, BANSTEAD SURREY-

2020

Client: Birchgrove

Planning authority: Reigate and Banstead

Status: Technical Design stage

Overview:

- 54 Extra-care apartments

- Site area: 2.23 hectares

- Grade II listed refurbishment

Birchgrove is an assisted living operator that provides accommodation and care to elderly residents who prefer to rent in retirement instead of owning property. The development provides aspirational, independent living apartments together with integrated care for elderly people in Banstead. Demolition of the existing 1980s extensions the benefits the area by securing the long-term restoration and maintenance of the historic buildings and landscaped grounds of Banstead Place. The proposal further enhances the existing heritage setting, including an on-site arboretum and orchard by restoring the landscaped gardens closer to their historic design intent. One example of this is restoring and making use of the existing ha-ha wall at north edge of the site opening up a vista over the adjacent landscaping following the demolition. The use of traditional materials such as flint and brick as well as retaining historic wallgarden features creates a visually respectful transition from historic to modern buildings. Our proposal works closely with the principles established by the extant planning permission secured by Cousins & Cousins Architects with a Colvin & Moggridge landscape strategy in January 2020.

About extra-care :

Extra-care developments provide modern assisted living units comprising of 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom apartments, with a range of on-site services and communal facilities. The apartments are only available for weekly rent to people over the age of 65.

My work on this project:

- Site modelling + CGI rendering

- Adapting site plan and landscape plan for the revised design

- Site visits

LOWER MILL, EWELL SURREY- 2019 -2020

Client: Birchgrove

Planning authority: Epsom and Ewell Borough Council

Status: Completion expected early 2022

Overview:

- 53 extra-care apartments for over 55s

- Historically sensitive

- Riverside location

- Site area: 0.27 hectares

This historically sensitive site which includes an 18th-century millhouse and outhouse, sits on the bank of Hogsmill River benefiting from woodland views immediately on the opposite bank.

The scheme provides independent living for the elderly, with day-to-day care in the form of assistance and domiciliary care tailored to occupants individual needs.

The new development replaces an existing 1980s office block making the site viable for the future residents and staff who will be inhabiting the space.

To maximise the potential of the site the landscape strategy follows its prolonged shape and steep topography which dictates the footprint of the proposed buildings.

In order to enhance the riverside activity space the proposal centres around a “waving” communal decking area spanning across the length of buildings 1 and 2 which is overhanging the river bank. This improves the clear field of view along the river in both directions as well as increasing the overall surface area to be used for social interaction and leisure. In situ, raised planting beds around the deck-area seating elevate scented planting closer to the users of the cafe and the communal space.

The restored riverbank features new tree planting with water tolerant alders and marginal planting closer to the water’s edge.

My work on this project involved:

- Site modelling + CGI rendering

- Site plan and landscape plan

- Hard + Soft Landscaping plans

PRIVATE GARDEN, WILLESDEN

LONDON- 2021

In 2020 I started taking private commissions. This project - a family garden at a private home in North London has impressive vista across a water reservoir. The client required a social space on a brand new, 10 x 5m timber decking platform elevating the “end of the garden” area over a steeply declining topography.

Additionally, the client wished to highlight and revitalise the planting borders with a vibrant and seasonally focussed herbaceous planting scheme, a compact and tidy raised food growing area was also required where an existing one was in need of attention.

My design solution was to start with creating a strong identity for the 2 existing areas of the garden which would in turn complement the newly built decking area.

Reworking the site levels on the central area established a distinct, flat central lawn area, encircled by the “recalibrated” planting border edges. The planting scheme utilised a previously established fruit tree and tall shrub planting to create dappled shade and background structure.

Additional features include a fire pit, glass gazebo with coffee table style seating, dining area and raised planters to protect against falling over the deck edge.

The site is currently at planting stage with hard landscaping elements completed.

PRIVATE GARDEN, CROUCH END

LONDON- 2021

Another of my private clients is a couple in their early 30s, who recently purchased a terraced house and are in the process of building a modern extension as well as a full renovation of the property.

The brief was to create a contemporary gravel garden within the newly formed square courtyard formed by the glazed and black timber clad extension. The courtyard includes a light-well with access out from the master bedroom.

The clients were very meticulous about the brief and the potential design options they wanted to explore. The design process of the potential stepping stone options involved a variety of patterns with alternating sizes and orientations.

The client required a design for a stepped access from the light-well directly into the garden as well as proposals for introducing more planting into the light-well with hanging and standing planters. I proposed a series of compact hanging planters under the single stringer stairs to create additional planting space with Muehlenbeckia complexa poking through the step gaps. A free-standing multi-faceted, corten steel planter will house an Acer shirasawanum in order to contrast the brick facade of the main house and light up the space as it grows out of the lightwell corner.

The project is currently on site.
