Coinciding with the COP26 summit this November, 26 TO ZERO presents the artwork of twenty-six premium, contemporary artists who have each responded to the call to support the work of The Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill. The artists have each created exclusive pieces, for an online, charity auction in partnership with Zero Hour and online art gallery DegreeArt.com. The handpicked artworks lots, which start from £150.00, all explore the theme of: ‘Our Future. Our Planet’. To support the work of the Zero Hour Auction, artworks have been endorsed by many charity supporters, including MPs, who are backing the bill. “I often use nature (plants and flowers for my work) and imply a symbiosis-like relationship between humans and natural world in my works. I believe we have a responsibility to take care of our planet and understand nature and how we can be part of it in harmony. The two works I present show this concept: the rib cage has blood vessels that resemble roots or branches while the skull with purple flowers tells a story of symbiosis between man and nature.“

“Climate in general (and more specific the impact of men on nature) is the main theme of my work.” Esther Schnerr is a painter based in the Netherlands. From a young age, she had a great talent for drawing but becoming an artist was not in line with her background. After 30 years of working in management and finance, she decided to start a second career in the arts. In 2020, she obtained a master's degree in painting at the Classical Academy of Painting in Groningen (Netherlands).

JOANNA GREEN

“I believe in nature and saving our planet.” Since gaining my 1st degree in Art, I have been steadily painting, showing and selling my pieces in various galleries and art fairs both in London and nationally. I am a descendent of the artist "John Constable" although my painting style is quite different, less classical though still figurative and more influenced by French Impressionism, Degas, Monet and Cezanne in particular.

I am currently living in London, and I have a studio in my Victorian house, where I create all my paintings. My work is usually inspired by beautiful places I have visited and interesting faces I have observed.

“The work I am submitting focuses on the changes in climate due to less air pollution during the first UK Lockdown. I feel it is important to share this work to a wider audience to raise awareness of climate change and how, by our collective actions, we can help to slow down or reduce the effects of climate change.” Kelly Jenkins is a contemporary painter and textile artist based in Hampshire. Starting from an interest in contemporary visual media, such as the internet. Her meticulously embroidered paintings reflect graphically the complex world we now live in. Her current series explores stitched data visualisations, where she reveals to us another way of understanding our reality and takes a critical view on human experience and existence.

When a national emergency was declared concerning the Covid-19 outbreak in early 2020, families around the world began to stay home to stay safe. LAURA FISHMAN “The daunting concept of climate change can be hard to process emotionally; it’s easy to be overwhelmed when confronted with a plethora of scientific statistics. As an artist I can help envisage and experience that which is hard to come to otherwise contemplate. In 2018 I visited Iceland which left a profound and indelible impact on my views about climate change and inspired a new creative direction in my artistic pursuits. I witnessed first hand glaciers shrinking, ice breaking and rivers surging. Iceland opened my eyes to the immediate effects of climate change and how it impacts the landscape. My work aims to explore the issues of rising temperatures, natural disasters and rising sea levels. I strive to show the beauty of the transforming landscape, celebrating with hope what is still here.”

RESERVE: £2,700.00 ‘Glacier Blue’ is from my series of paintings inspired by my visit to Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier, on the south coast of Iceland. This Glacier is among the biggest of the dozens of glaciers that descend from Vatnajokull ice cap, which loses an average of 100 to 300 meters in length annually. Scientists predict that glaciers may largely vanish in the next 100-200 years. I wanted to capture the melting ice, which was beautiful and sublime yet equally disturbing, knowing it’s from the effects of climate change.

RESERVE: £2,070.00 Scientists have been warning for years that rising temperatures will make dry conditions for wildfires more common in some parts of the world and, in other places, trap more moisture in the atmosphere, leading to heavier rainfall during storms. This was predicted in climate science decades ago, everything we worried about is happening now, even faster than the previous most pessimistic estimates.

LUCY STEVENS “My art practice focuses our relationship with the natural world. My most recent work in collaboration with The British Trust of Ornithology and Leicestershire & Rutland Wildlife Trust explored the effects of climate change on migratory birds. The new collection of mixed media artwork was informed by scientific research to demonstrate declines in bird populations and changes in bird behaviour due to extreme weather conditions. "The two artworks I've submitted reflect the songs and habitats of the Blue tit, a common bird found across the UK and the Lago Sparrows, which is endemic to the Cape Verde archipelago near western Africa.”

LUKE WALKER Luke M Walker views his practice as an inquiry into memory, time, distance and materiality with each series of works being an opportunity to discover something new, through experimentation, exploration, chance, the collection of data and other records of his personal progress through the environment, whether a city or somewhere further afield. It is an attempt to discover the role of a Landscape Artist today. Much of his work derives from exploration, primarily through walking. This can involve collecting specific data on walks; the length, the pace, the altitude or number of steps etc. and translating the data into a painting which become physical representations of the momentary act of walking itself. As an Artist and co-founder of the Wilderness Art Collective: a group of artists, writers and film-makers who's work explores aspects of the environment and landscape; we feel we can help promote, highlight and encourage positive change through the work we choose to make.

‘Datascape 008 'Inverted World' 14.12.16 La Garde Freinet to Collobrieres, Provence, 12.5 miles’ 76 x 101 cm Oil on Canvas Ready to hang This work documents a walk across a mountain range in the South of France that I undertook around 5 years ago. It was a perfect late Autumn day and I experienced a beautiful cloud inversion from the top of the mountains with the plains below enveloped in the mist. The colours of the piece reflect the colours of the landscape on that special day. Sadly in August this year a huge wild fire went straight over this mountain range destroying over 7000 hectares of land, damaging very important habitats and leading to the loss of several lives.

RESERVE: £1,200.00 As with my last piece, this work also documents part of the Massif du Maures. A walk along a mountain ridge above the village of La Garde Freinet in Provence, South of France.The three lines from the top; represent my elevation, the actual drawn ridge and the speed at which I walked it. I've been walking this ridge for over 40 years and know every step of it intimately. In August this year, this ridge was aflame for the best part of 3 days and nights, with the village below 41 completely cut off.

LYRA MORGAN

“I feel 'at home' in 3 places....in and with nature, in my studio and in water. This planet is home to us all, the only planet we have available to us to enable life. Sometimes even Mother Nature needs some TLC and we owe it to 'her' to give her some! Finding different ways to represent water is an ongoing theme in my practice. I am fascinated with its transient nature and ability to take many forms whether it be a formed yet formless cloud or a flowing river.” Lyra Morgan’s ‘statement’ paintings evoke the calmness she feels when she creates them, transforming the spaces we live in. Through her love of colour, she creates atmosphere by working in layers with mixed media and a unique non-brush technique making her pieces one of a kind. Each piece is instinctively balanced in composition and is created organically and by Lyra being free enough in spirit to allow each work to build through a cycle of evolution.

Even if we are in a city, we are not separate from nature, we share the same light, we share the same colours, we share the same skies. This piece recognizes that we have a window to do what we can in whatever way we can (small steps or big gestures) to enable a more harmonious, sustainable existence with nature in the future.

“I would love through creativity and using my art, to contribute towards and support a movement, which aims to safeguard our future and planet. As with so many across the globe who are passionate about protecting the natural world and health of our ecosystems, I too am deeply disturbed by the destruction and disintegration of so much life on earth. The correlation with, and effect on, our own well-being and ultimate survival of humanity is brutally clear. I believe Art and inspiration can be part of the world’s mission to self-heal. It can help remind us of the sublime beauty life offers and channels in all its various forms, colour and expression.”

“It suggests a sense of urgency and motion - dancing for survival echoing the ephemeral nature of life on earth and its rhythmic interconnection. The ghostly images illustrate the fragility of that web/our ecosystems..how so many species are hanging in precarious balance, fast becoming extinct or already extinct. RENE GONZALEz Rene Gonzalez is a London based artist of Latino background who was born in Montreal Canada, though he lived in Costa Rica by the age of ten before moving to the UK in 2012 to undertake a BA in Fine Art Painting at City & Guilds of London Art School.
