ANNE ALLEN, “A Present for Isla, (detail), Acrylic on Vellum, 8 x 10 Inspired by Isla’s drawing, KinderKlasse, The Lexington School

Time flies when you’re having fun! So much so that it’s hard to believe this is now the fourth year of our producing REIMAGINE. And this is truly one of Arts Connect’s ‘funnest’ programs.

Drawings submitted by elementary school children from ten of Fayette County’s schools – public, private and parochial, with different schools invited each year – have inspired the 40 artworks in this year’s exhibition.

Kentucky artists select from a vast smorgasbord of student drawings.

One of the early joys of this program is reviewing the students’ work and seeing the nascent talent, the whimsy, and the themes evidenced in the work of these young artists. It’s possible to see all art styles – still life; portraiture; abstract; expressionism; narrative; surrealism; cubism; realism; pointillism and more… A veritable visual feast of choices for sure!

Even more remarkable is how our Kentucky artists can take a simple line drawing and whip it into something visually extraordinary – a work of awesome art! Here again this year we have a broad representation of local artists working in their preferred medium - wood, metal, collage, mixed, assemblage, oil, acrylic, paper, clay, photography and fabric.

Our primary focus in this program has always been the school children. Our intention is to encourage, recognize and nurture the artistic talents in our emerging young artists by elevating their work to gallery exhibition status and giving them credit for being the source of inspiration.

This is a fundraiser. Proceeds from the auction are divided between the participating schools for classroom art supplies, the artists, and Arts Connect as the program administrator. We are hopeful that the bids will be generous. Arts Connect wishes to acknowledge the founder of the REIMAGINE program, Lori Barnett, who successfully produced it from 2014-2019 as part of her Creative Alliance for Arts Education nonprofit organization’s efforts. Sincere thanks, as well, to the Living Arts and Science Center who have again graciously agreed to host this exhibition. They also provided installation expertise and shared other resources with us for which we are very grateful.

Much credit and appreciation also to our art educators who are such an important part of this effort. Long may they champion the cause for arts in schools! This year’s teachers have been involved since the onset, organizing and submitting work from their students and then staying engaged as the program advances.

But most of all we want to thank this year’s artists. It’s always fun and exciting to see the work that results from the inspiration of a simple drawing. Imagination is a fine thing, and this year’s artists have it in spades! Thank you all for so willingly participating in this feel-good, win/win/win program. We love you!

Once Upon a Table: The Owl and His Curse

Water-Based Media on Canvas, 20 x 16 Value: $375

“Owls have been popping up in my imagery the past few years. The wisdom, vision, and magic of these marvelous nocturnal birds may be the reason. Seeing all of his prey running around him while he is unable to chase them is the root of his crabbiness.”

LAVON WILLIAMS was a Kentucky Wildcat basketball star in college, known widely by Kentucky fans as part of the legendary team that won the 1978 National Championship. After college, he played professionally overseas before returning to Lexington where he worked at a local middle school as a teacher’s aide, a mentor, and a coach. Somewhere in all that activity, as he matured, he was driven and compelled to produce art. It became an obsession. LaVon’s work has a “culturally-specific vocabulary” that is both edgy and austere with an emphasis on the importance of music, from jazz to blues to sacred, with sculpture from small to very large. lavonsfolkart@aol.com
