This lovely sestertius of Nero shows the emperor in the traditional ceremony of the adlocutio, the solemn address given by a general to his army: he is standing on a high platform, bare-headed and togate, with the Praetorian prefect behind him, and he is outstretching his raised arm towards his cohorts – here represented by a group of three praetorians – as if appealing to their sentiments, raising their enthusiasm or beckoning for silence. In the background to the whole scene is a pillared building which may as well be a depiction of the praetorium itself, the headquarters of the praetorian guard. These soldiers were the backbone of the Emperor’s strength, therefore it comes as no surprise that Nero chose to dedicate them this reverse type. In doing so, he followed the example of his uncle, Caligula, the first to introduce this iconography; many other emperors followed his example, from Vespasian to Trajan, from Marcus Aurelius to Maxentius. One of the most famous artistic representations of the adlocutio is the remarkable marble statue known as Augustus of Prima Porta, which can today be admired in the Braccio Nuovo of the Vatican Museums in Rome.

As Rome’s population increased during the Ist century, so did its demand for food and goods. Both Julius Caesar and his adoptive son Octavian Augustus had considered building a maritime port at Ostia, but the expected costs were so daunting that the idea was shelved for a few decades. Some years later, a great famine during the reign of Emperor Claudius led him to dust off the old project, indeed a very ambitious one: the construction of a massive seaport, 3 km north of the mouth of the Tiber. Unfortunately, Claudius didn’t live to see the completion of the harbour, which was inaugurated in 64 AD, during the reign of successor, Nero. There are several variants of this famous reverse type, all of which show a very artistic presentation of the harbour, bustling with activity: some ships (their number varies from seven to twelve) occupy the central area, while the outer border is a circular depiction of the breakwater and warehouses. The harbour’s pharos, surmounted by a statue of Neptune, is depicted toward the top of the coin, whereas at the bottom is a personification of the river Tiber, reclining and facing to the left, holding a rudder and a dolphin.

The grandiose construction programme pursued by Nero and its outstanding outcome must certainly have been popular talking point in his day.

In all likelihood, Nero would have much preferred to be remembered as an artist and performer rather than as emperor of Rome: in fact, no sooner had he taken the imperial office than he sent for Terpnus, the greatest citharoedus of his time, in order to foster his musical vocation, which he thought very highly of. Suetonius, perhaps exaggerating the emperor’s zeal, reports that Nero neglected not even the most gruelling – and bizarre, we may add – exercises that artists were in the habit of following in order to preserve or strengthen their voices, such as lying on the back with a leaden plate on the chest, purging and vomiting, and avoiding certain kinds of food. “Hidden music counts for nothing”, Nero used to say, quoting a Greek proverb: he felt his artistic talents were a wonder to be shared, and that’s why he would often pose as a professional (much to the senate’s disgust), perform before the public, and submit to his judgment. He longed to be represented in the guise of a musician and lyre-player: «He had a coin too struck with the same device», Suetonius writes (Suet. Nero, XXV 2): in fact, the image of Nero citharoedus appears on a number of Neronian coin types struck between 62 and 65 AD; our as is a fine and emblematic specimen of those issues. On the reverse, Nero is depicted as Apollo, the god of Music and Poetry, playing the lyre. This type is a straightforward statement of divine attributes in Nero, but it does not represent actual deification: what the emperor desired was to be associated with Apollo’s role as musician rather than as a deity. It is well possible that these coin types were based on actual statues of Nero in citharoedicus habitus, erected in order to celebrate the emperor’s citharodic image throughout the empire.

The upper class, who was highly critical of the emperor’s artistic activities, passed down to posterity the image of Nero who, possessed by his insane love for music, watches from above the dreadful spectacle of the city burn to the ground as he performs one of his own compositions, the Capture of Troy: the episode, recalled by Suetonius (Nero, XXXII 2) and later echoed by Tacitus (Annals, XV 39, 3) and Cassius Dio (LXII 18, 1), was, in all likelihood, a malicious rumour, dictated by the senator’s aversion to Nero’s excesses.

This exceptional sestertius, bearing a strikingly realistic portrait of the emperor, celebrates the closing of the Gates of the Temple of Janus in the Roman Forum. Traditionally, the doors of this shrine were left open in time of war and kept closed when the city was at peace; in all of Roman history until the reign of Nero, the Gates of Janus had been shut perhaps five or six times – and, not surprisingly, three of them date back to Augustus, who carefully crafted the image of his principate as that of a revived “Golden Age” (aurea saecula) of peace and prosperity. According to Suetonius (Suet. Nero XIII 1-2), this meaningful event, which consecrated Rome’s protectorate over Armenia, took place again in 66 AD, on the occasion of Tiridates’ visit to Rome; the first monetary issues depicting the temple of Janus, though, date from 64 AD, as attested by the inscription on the obverse TR(ibunicia) P(otestas) XI. It is probable that the ceremony, having been originally celebrated in 64, was formally repeated in 66 to coincide with the third centenary, which fell precisely in that year, of the first closing of the Gates in 235 BC by the consul Titus Manlius Torquatus.

The reverse of the coin shows the front of the temple, with a latticed window and a garland hanging overhead. The inscription, running clockwise around the coin, hints rather clearly at the Res Gestae Divi Augusti, a propagandistic record of his deeds that Augustus himself wrote and had widely publicised: the same terminology Augustus uses in connection with the closing of the temple of Janus is here consciously evoked in the formula PACE P(opuli) R(omani) TERRA MARIQ(ue) PARTA IANVM CLVSIT (cfr. Res Gestae 13). By quoting the exact same words that Augustus had employed in his Res Gestae, Nero wanted to imply that, by bringing peace back to Rome with his great diplomatic triumph involving Tiridates’ submission to Roman rule, he was in no way inferior to his illustrious predecessor.
