INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES NEWSLETTER Hello Toros! Academic Internships are a great way to gain practical experience in a professional setting before you graduate.

The Center for Service Learning is open all summer to help you during your career development process. Whether you are a freshman just finishing up your first semester or a senior graduating in May, it is never too early or too late to begin planning for your future career. What better way to explore opportunities while boosting your resume than to obtain an internship. In this newsletter, you can find a variety of internships. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ALCOHOL & DRUG PROGRAMS INC. Southern California Alcohol & Drug Programs provides treatment services to deaf and hard of hearing persons through Awakenings - a fully accessible residential recovery program. Opened in November, 1988, Awakenings was the first residential drug abuse treatment program for and by deaf and hard of hearing persons in the United States.

Awakenings provide a six to 12month long treatment program delivered entirely in American Sign Language for Deaf men and women. Located in Whittier, the program facility consists of four separate apartments with a total of 14

residential beds for men, and women. Awakenings added an additional ten transitional and permanent housing beds via a HUD grant.

VALENCIA BERNARD Did your internships help you find employment or allow you to feel more confident entering the workforce? Yes. Although Jumpstart was working with early childhood it built my confidence in managing and observing different behaviors. It also motivated me to apply for employment with a similar age group. The director of the residential counselors that I interviewed (Maryam) expressed how much she liked the Jumpstart program, and its mission, which was a plus. Although my new job is working with teen moms I felt that Maryam gave me a huge opportunity to transition from working with early childhood to working with teen moms, and their children. Also, during the interview she asked a few scenario questions. Based on my training and experience from Jumpstart, I was able to relate the trainings I got from Jumpstart to my responses to the scenario questions. Because the type of job is hands-on, my past experiences provided similar situations that I wouldn’t have been able to relate to otherwise.”

If you had the opportunity to intern with Jumpstart again, would you do it? “Yes, and I would apply as Team Leader. When I was the “team leader for a week” I really enjoyed the role and what it entailed. Things such as standing in front of the classroom and directing the session of the week, although it took a little more time commitment, I really felt like it was fun and not a challenge at all.”

Being an athlete, and being really busy, did your internship take time away from your academic and athletic work? If so, how did you manage this? “No, I felt like it did not. Time management was one of the elements I got out of my internship training. And, I really took that into consideration and made myself a weekly schedule so in addition to traveling for track, and track meets, and homework I managed to have a schedule that allowed me to give the appropriate attention to everything I was a part of so I could perform effectively on and off the track.”

It’s important to note that Valencia obtained her new job thanks to her success and track record in her internship.

WHAT OUR INTERNS ARE SAYING?  In a recent focus group of 41 interns, 90% agreed that their experiential learning activity (internships) related well to the course curriculum.

CSUDH JUSTICECORPS The award-winning California JusticeCorps program recruits, trains, and places over 270 undergraduates and recent Chief Justice poses with group after accepting the 2014 Education Pipeline Award on behalf of JusticeCorps graduates in court-based self-help centers.

2014 marked the 10 year anniversary of the California JusticeCorps Program and the 20th anniversary of AmeriCorps.

Most recently, JusticeCorps was honored for its role in cultivating and educating a more diverse bench and bar by the California State Bar Council on Access and Fairness, with its 2014 Education Pipeline Award Trained by legal experts in family and housing law, students will assist clients with legal info and do advocacy work at self-help center. Must commit to 300 hours of service; may receive stipend.

 In a recent focus group of 34 interns, 85% agreed they had a better understanding of their classroom curriculum as a result of their internship.  In a recent focus group of 34 interns, 95% agreed that students from other courses would benefit from this type of experiential learning.  In a similar focus group of 46 interns, 82.60% agreed that this experience affected their thinking about the community (or agency), its problems and or the solutions to the problems.

Did your internships at CSUDH support your future goals?

Attending CSUDH was a wonderful experience. It helped build on my networking skills, and ability to jump into any experience. I believe every opportunity is worth trying whether it is something an individual continues to purse or decides to move onto a different path. The internships at CSUDH really helped for my future goals particularly Jumpstart. Jumpstart is well-known in the educational community, and gives an individual the upper hand when applying for other internships or employment opportunities.

Did your internships prepare you for USC social work?

Do they relate to your current fieldwork?

My first year internship placement was at El Rancho Unified School District where I was titled as a Mental Health Intern Counselor. The previous internships definitely helped prepare me for USC School of Social Work. Although this was a co-curricular requirement for Human Services, I realized upon entering my new internship placement (at the graduate level) that I had slightly more experience than other classmates because I did three semesters of internship, rather than one.

What is some advice you can give to students considering internships?

When going for an internship push for a placement that gives you as much experience and training as possible. The ability to have an array of knowledge working in different areas is something employers consider when hiring individuals. If your placement offers on-going training and gives you the option to participate, go for it. One never knows what they will learn, who they will network with, and the benefit they may receive from such opportunity. Same goes for any events and activities on campus. Something that may be free at CSUDH could cost you once you have graduated. Don't miss out on an opportunity that can be beneficial in the long run.

CSUDH RECEIVES PRESIDENT’S HIGHER EDUCATION COMMUNITY SERVICE HONOR ROLL’S TOP HONOR, THE PRESIDENTIAL AWARD California State University, Dominguez Hills believes in academic excellence, community service, and the core values of liberal education. Community engagement is infused throughout CSUDH’s mission statement and strategic plan.

In 2013, Business Insider ranked the school sixth in the nation using President Obama’s criteria of accessibility, affordability, and outcome. Washington Monthly has ranked Dominguez Hills as the eighth best master's university in the nation for "contributions to the public good." The Carson City Council has also presented the university with several awards for community engagement and regularly collaborates with the school on community events.

Service Summary Sixty-five percent of CSUDH students engage in service learning, both through the formal curriculum and the university’s service learning hub, the Center for Service Learning, Internships, & Civic Engagement (SLICE). As freshmen, all students who elect a First Year Experience with a service component participate in courses with defined community service elements throughout their collegiate career. Through SLICE, students regularly volunteer to mentor youth on topics ranging from college preparation to negotiation and conflict resolution. SLICE houses the Jumpstart for Young Children Program, the JusticeCorps Program, and the Volunteer Center. The Center also maintains a space for additional projects, such as packaging donations for the homeless and collecting necessities for soldiers, or for facilitating reflection sessions.



Our specialty at “Al Bel” is rehabilitation. We have rehabilitation physicians who work closely with our in house rehab team as well as our attending physicians. The goal of our rehab physicians is to ensure that each resident achieves optimal rehab levels. We have a proven track record of successful outcomes and pride ourselves in delivering excellent rehabilitation as well as excellent patient care.

We provide 24-Hour licensed nursing care and are capable of providing IV therapy, hydration, and pain management.

Tell me about your internship experience? My internship experience with Jumpstart was amazing, and very helpful. During Jumpstart I connected with so many amazing individuals who not only shared similar passions for children (as myself), but also individuals who worked over time to make sure that our children were getting the best out of our program. By helping contribute to the children’s educational growth, I took part in closing the academic gap within lower SES areas such as Compton, CA. Watching many of my partner children come in on the first day of Jumpstart not knowing how to hold their pencils, write their names, speak another language confidently, name classroom materials, and even color’s was no doubt intimidating. However, because of the amazing Jumpstart staff that provided us with support and resources needed to be successful in the preschool classrooms (along with my dedication) I was able to facilitate a consistent growth within their academia. I would definitely do Jumpstart all over again if I could.

What skills did you gain from this experience? I enhanced my communication skills through working with the teachers and my CSUDH team at Chester Head Start. I also learned team building skills along with leadership skills. There were times were (as a Corps member and team player) you were required to perform many task throughout the program other than Corps member duties and it helped me become a better organizer, and leader.

Are you interning anywhere next semester? I will be a Case Manager for Long Beach Rescue Mission. I am thrilled!

What are your goals after graduation? I will apply to graduate school for my Masters of Social work, fall 16’. I hope to build my own nonprofit focused on adults who were incarcerated and at risk youth in Low SES community particularly black and brown bodies. Often times when we are at risk and or being released from incarceration a label of “trouble, danger and criminal,” is attached to us by society. With my nonprofit I hope to help the adults continue to make a steady transition back into society through connecting them with their families, providing them with resources regarding jobs, housing, rehabilitation and education etc. In addition, the children will also have a place to receive help with homework, and become exposed to many forms of art, dance, music, ones culture and begin preparation for college.

Changing Spirits Recovery Program is a social model, community based 180day residential program targeting Native American men, over 18 years of age, who have a desire to recover from alcohol or drug addiction.

Changing Spirits Recovery Program is a Non-profit program that does not discriminate or deny services based on race, ethnic background, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, or the ability to pay.

BETTER LEARNING FOR ALL STUDENTS TODAY in a safe and constructive environment.

The Bridge to College Program provides high school students with opportunities to build on specific skills for life after high school such as how to register for college, apply for jobs, and where and how to hone their professional development skills.

Our desire to inspire youth to choose positive and lifechanging opportunities led to the creation of the following three distinct programs for which BLAST is known and which aim to ensure support for all age groups.

Our Academic Mentoring Program matches college students to participate in one-on-one mentoring with a child at one of our partnering sites and focus on building personal trust and support to foster the child's academics, future thinking, and character development.

BLAST also operates its own after-school program for children who are residents in a housing development in north Long Beach. Our dynamic program invites the children to experience hands-on participation and understanding of topics such as health/wellness, academics, and technology

JUMPSTART The Jumpstart Solution Jumpstart’s research-based, cost-effective program trains college students and community volunteers to serve preschool-age children in low-income neighborhoods. Through our proven curriculum, these children develop the language and literacy skills they need to be ready for school, setting them on the path for lifelong success.

How Jumpstart Works Jumpstart sessions take place two days per week, for two hours each time. Each session revolves around a core storybook and one book serves as the focus for two sessions. The paid internship program is highly competitive and preference is given to graduate students and highly-qualified juniors and seniors in undergraduate programs. READING PARTNERS Few cities have captured the world’s imagination in the way that Los Angeles has. From Hollywood and celebrities to famous architecture and internationally renowned cuisine, Los Angeles is a captivating city. But the reality for too many of Los Angeles’ kids is far from glamorous. One in four children in Los Angeles lives in poverty. With only 47% of third graders reading proficiently, their chances to break out of this cycle of poverty are slim.

Reading Partners wants to change that. We’re working alongside parents, teachers, and school leaders in Los Angeles County to equip all students with the skills they need to succeed. Since our launch in Los Angeles in 2008, we’ve grown from serving three schools to providing our innovative literacy intervention program in ten schools in 2012-13.
