Hugh Greer
2nd Place Winner
Landscape artist Hugh Greer started painting when he was six years old. This activity was the mutual decision between Greer, his parents, and his teachers to keep the firstgrader ‘busy,’ which was another way of saying ‘out of trouble.’ “It proved to be a win-win for everybody,” Greer says with a smile. Little did they know, the budding artist was embarking on an award-winning career in fine art.

Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, Greer graduated from Kansas University with a B.A. in industrial design and spent 40 years creating architectural renderings before he began painting landscapes full-time. His beautiful, realistic scenes allude to his architectural training, as seen in the barns and houses which he often incorporates in his paintings.
The Wichita-based artist’s work attests to his natural talent and keen eye in the use of color, light, and composition, and these are the elements that inspire his choice of subjects. “When I’m choosing what to paint, what draws my attention is the way the light dances off a subject, light against dark, and color. Generally, I use local color, but sometimes I like to enhance it to make the work more visually striking,” he explains.
Greer’s work is a testament to his love of the Kansas landscape. “I find Kansas beautiful,” he says. “Just like I find the Rocky Mountains beautiful, and the high deserts of New Mexico and Arizona. I try to express my love for all these places in my paintings.”
Greer participates in shows and exhibitions, but when he’s not painting, he mirrors his six-yearold self and keeps busy (although with different activities). “My favorite pastimes are bass fishing and model trains,” he says. “I also like to get a big bag of vitamin M&Ms and drive around the country. I’ve gotten lost more than once.” n
