About Art Start
Since 1991 Art Start has used the creative process to nurture the voices, hearts, and minds of youth from communities that have been historically marginalized, offering a space for them to imagine, believe, and represent their creative vision for their lives and communities.
Through consistent workshops with long-term community partners, including youth organizations, schools, alternative sentencing programs, and transitional housing residences, art becomes the starting point of a larger life process, and the start of larger conversations about the future of our communities.
Founded and headquartered in New York City and operating Milwaukee since 2017, Art Start has become an award-winning, nationally recognized model for using the creative arts to transform lives. Through its three main programs, Creative Collectives, Creative Connections, and Public Exchanges, Art Start engages thousands of youth and community members each year. Art Start meets youth where they are, supports them in identifying and building upon innate talents, wisdom, and lived experiences, and maintains platforms for voices to be heard and people to be seen through the process of their own creative self-determination.
ACERCA DE ArT STArT

Art is a powerful tool to reflect on our lives, and to take the lead in creating our own narrative about who we are and how we show up in the world. Similarly, a family portrait can help us define and redefine who and what makes a family. The Art Start Family Portrait Project seeks to provide this creative affirmation of the love, hope, and loyalty of families navigating some of life’s biggest challenges. Through the medium of portraiture and storytelling, a parent’s love, a child’s dreams, and an unbreakable bond of mutual understanding is framed, allowing families to see themselves from this holistic perspective.
The Art Start Family Portrait Project builds upon the relationships Art Start has been honored to build with each child and their caregivers through our year-round STEAM-based afterschool arts program. We’re grateful to have been welcomed into each young person’s life as educators, and into their hearts as witnesses to their family portraits and stories of special memories, happiness and hardship, of migration, motherhood, and their dreams for themselves and each other.
This project also builds upon Art Start’s engagement model of Transformational Relationships and Healing Centered Engagement that promotes self-awareness, holistic developmental learning practices, and a growth mindset for youth experiencing transitions in their lives.
As one community united in creativity, we’re proud and grateful to the young people and their families who trust us with their stories, the contributing photographers and artists, our sponsors, community partners, staff and volunteers. Our collective belief in the power of art to transform lives propels the Art Start mission forward. Together, we are not just changing the narrative; we are rewriting it with each stroke of a paintbrush, each beat of a drum, and a shared belief that creativity is each individual’s unique expression that the world is made better by witnessing.

The importance of strong family bonds has been well documented by child development experts over time. A family can provide love, support, stability, comfort, predictability, and develop the confidence and courage in children to venture far. Early on, based upon family bonds or lack thereof, children develop attachment styles that play a major role in how they navigate future relationships and the world at large. When I reflect on the portraits in this project, I see strong families, firm bonds, and relationships that are at the center of the life of each person. With a foundation created by the presence of a loving family, life’s challenges can be faced with courage and faith that things will get better. The stories and photographs held in this book are a testament that a family’s strength comes not from predictable conventions but from the unifying bonds that root each other in love in the face of life’s joys and challenges.

I want my daughters to achieve their dreams. I want my daughters to know that we, their parents, have been very brave.
By Zachary Maxwell Stertz 2026
Me siento feliz. Veo nuestra unidad y nuestro amor mutuo.

Jocelyn (Mom): The experience of having our picture taken was very beautiful. I feel happy. I can see our unity and our love for each other. `
We are from Ecuador. We feel happy because we have achieved things we never imagined. To be in this country with family is not easy, especially arriving with children. My husband is working and is not in the picture, but we’re happy that we are united. He is a cook in a restaurant. We enjoy Ecuadorian food and pizza. My daughters are learning English in school. They also like to have fun, draw, write, and play.
It is hard in this country for Latinos, but I see my daughters adjusting to the culture here, the studies and the language. We are all adjusting, but it is difficult for us adults to learn a new language. It is easier for them since they are in school. I am so proud of them. They are smart and will achieve their dreams.
If I could give advice to a younger version of myself, I would say to stay close to God and always do the right thing. God is everything to us. He is the motivation that helps us get up each morning. He takes care of us and is with us in the good times and the bad. Each day I try to right my wrongs and do things the right way so we can achieve our goals. We have faith in God. I want to tell all the families at the residence that this is a temporary situation. God will open doors for all of us, and we will achieve our goals. I want my daughters to achieve their dreams. I want my daughters to know that we, their parents, have been very brave.

Edison (Dad): We’re a family of five, plus our turtle, who is not in the photo. Our dream is that perhaps one day we will return to Peru and own a home. The most important thing is that we are together as a family and have good health.
The kids play soccer with me in the park. They are not enrolled in an academy, but they play at school. It’s been interesting being in America. It’s different from Peru. The people are different. Here there are more work opportunities and a better future for the children. I want my children to be professionals. The brothers love each other.
I’m not a perfect father, but I try to teach them by example, to give them values, to be just, and to do things right. I am a serious person. When I am with family and people I know, we can laugh, but I am generally serious and I stay close to my family.
Katia (Mom): It hasn’t been easy, but it has not been terribly sad. It is not good to live in the pain of the past. It’s not easy, but we are committed to our family.
With my children I am loving. I try to give them the best, to talk with them, to give them advice, and to prepare them mentally for adolescence.

Me gusta ayudarla. En la escuela me gustan las matemáticas. De pequeña, era la mejor estudiante.

Ivis (Mom): In this photo I see a beautiful family. We have been through a lot, but every day we get better. I see beautiful, happy kids. We are always grateful. We have been in different shelters, and my daughter asks why we need to move so much. But she is happy here because we have a kitchen.
I would love to tell the families here to never give up. There is so much persecution nowadays, and we have been through too much to stop now.
Marinque (Dad): When I look at our portrait, I see a family that has remained united despite difficult times, with a desire to move forward. We have been in New York for four months. We thank God that we have found good people to help us.
I am proud that we have love and respect for each other. Despite the challenges, we remain positive and grateful. I feel happy that we have our basic needs, that my children are speaking English, and that we are at peace in this country. We strive for stability.
Mathias (Son): My dad says I will be a good defensive soccer player, a defender who protects the team. I have been speaking English for one year. My dad understands a little, but my mom not so much. When we go somewhere, my mom asks me to translate. I like helping her.
In school I like math. I was the best student growing up.

Me siento bendecida. Hemos luchado, pero hemos intentado salir adelante. Nos alegra la comunidad de esta residencia.
Me considero una excelente madre y una buena persona. Mis hijas son muy cariñosas. Me abrazan y me dicen cuánto me quieren. Estamos felices.
Me habría hecho sentir mejor conmigo misma. A veces tomamos malas decisiones.

Luz Mary (Mom): I love this photograph. This is the first time I’ve had this experience. I wanted a family photo to place on our dinner table. This is an opportunity you don’t see every day. I am so happy.
I am so proud and feel so fortunate to have my children and my family. I feel blessed. We have struggled, but we have tried to move forward. We are happy for the community here in this residence.
I consider myself an excellent mother and a good person. My daughters are very loving. They give me hugs and tell me how much they love me. We are happy. My eldest daughter is not in the picture, and my husband is at work, so they are not in the photo.
If I could turn back time, I would have studied more. It would have made me feel good about myself. Sometimes we make bad decisions. I tell my daughters to study. The more one studies, the more the mind grows. You have better perspectives, and life is different.
When one doesn’t study, one can feel beneath others. I see how important studying is. When one doesn’t know or study, one becomes dependent and can end up with nothing.
I want my daughters to grow up without violence. To study, study, study!

No quería escuchar. Mi madre regresó a Honduras.
Estamos agradecidos. La gente de aquí es buena. Ellos son nuestros guías.

I would have been a different person if I had stayed in school. I was rebellious. I didn’t want to listen. Bruce (Dad): This is our first-ever family portrait. This is a big family, and I am happy. I never thought we would have so many kids.
When we take pictures nowadays, it’s usually for social media, taken with a phone—not like this. This is worth a lot of memories.
I was born in Manhattan and raised in Queens. Life was better back then. Now people think they have freedom, but they don’t. Social media takes away from how people react with each other in person. You think you know someone, but you don’t. People share a lot of stories online, but in person, they share nothing.
I want my kids to know to be themselves. Don’t have jealousy or hate within you. Be yourself. Be happy.
Emily (Mom): We grew up on the same block and have been married for fourteen years. No matter what situation we are in, our family sticks together.
I would like for us to find a house so that we can grow together, and my children can find their way in life and know they will always have a home.
In our generation, houses were affordable. Now you need to earn millions to buy a home.

Sean ustedes mismos. Sean felices.
