Marcel Dyf (1899 - 1985)
Born Marcel Dreyfus in Paris in 1899, Marcel Dyf emerged as one of the last great inheritors of the French Impressionist tradition. Though he initially trained as an engineer, his true calling lay in paint, and by his early twenties he had devoted himself fully to art, establishing a studio in Arles in 1922. The light and colour of Provence would leave a lasting mark on his vision, shaping the lyrical sensibility that became his signature - shown throughout this exciting collection!
Largely self-taught, Dyf drew inspiration from the great masters while developing a style unmistakably his own. One distinguished by radiant colour, fluid brushwork, and a remarkable ability to capture atmosphere. His paintings celebrate the beauty of the French landscape, from the flower-filled fields of Provence to the lush riverbanks of Brittany and the quiet elegance of Parisian gardens. Equally admired are his sumptuous floral still lifes and intimate portraits, many inspired by his wife and muse, Claudine, whose presence brought warmth and grace to much of his later work.
Dyf’s career flourished internationally. He exhibited at the prestigious Paris Salons; including the Salon d’Automne, Salon des Tuileries, and Salon des Artistes Français. He gained devoted collectors in London and the United States through his long association with Frost & Reed. His works found audiences across Europe and America, admired for their timeless romanticism and their continuation of the Impressionist love of light, movement, and everyday beauty.
Today, Marcel Dyf is celebrated as one of the final poetic voices of French post-Impressionism. His paintings remain highly sought after for their elegance, luminosity, and enduring charm - these are works that invite the viewer into an idealised France of blossoms, sunlit paths, and serene femininity.
