Tony Forrest.

Tony Forrest is a British wildlife artist whose richly textured oil paintings have delved into the wilds of Africa and India for over three decades. Originally hailing from the West Midlands, he developed a fascination for painting from the age of about seven and later transitioned in his twenties into wildlife art after being profoundly moved by the work of David Shepherd. Forrest has travelled extensively on safari, his first to Kenya’s Tsavo West National Park, to capture animals in their natural habitats, often working from his own photographs taken in the field. His passion for painting thickly applied oils allows him to emphasise the physical presence of animals like elephants, hippos and buffalo, imbuing his canvases with the tactile sense of mud, tusks and creature bulk. Throughout his career, Forrest has exhibited in prestigious venues in the UK and USA; including the Mall Galleries in London and the Safari Club International convention in Reno, earning acclaim as one of the UK’s finest living wildlife artists. Beyond his art, he is deeply committed to conservation: he has donated paintings to charities such as the Born Free Foundation, Tusk Trust and Africat Foundation, helping raise thousands of pounds for wildlife protection. Today based in Cornwall, Forrest continues to seek new safari experiences and painting opportunities, always driven by the belief that his work should place the viewer face-to-face with the realities of the natural world.

Richard Smith (b. 1955)

Richard J. Smith was born in Luton, Bedfordshire, UK in 1955. He studied illustration at Luton School of Art to a high standard and graduated with a diploma in Technical & Scientific Illustration. He was soon offered a job as a medical artist at the John Radcliffe teaching hospital in Oxford. In 1978 he was painting for galleries as a full time artist with his depictions of wildlife. He has gained an international reputation for his work and is best known for his superb paintings of fish and water. He has exhibited at prestigious galleries such as the Tryon Gallery and W. H. Patersons in London, The Sportsman’s Edge Gallery in New York, The Call of Africa in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and the Everard Reed Gallery in Johannesburg, South Africa. Richard has exhibited his paintings at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum in the USA and the Natural History Museum and Tring Museum in Britain. He has sold at all the major auctions houses in London, such as Christie’s, Sotheby’s, Bonhams and Phillips. In the latter part of 2007, Richard was commissioned to produce several fish paintings, for the Sultan of Oman. Callaghan Fine Paintings has commissioned a series of life size bronze birds. His works include British birds such as the elusive Snipe sitting atop a fence post and the beautiful Little Blue penguin, a native of New Zealand. His works are all studied from life whilst either out in the field or in a museum with taxidermy. With incredible attention to detail Richard has breathed fresh air into this medium.

Tobias Martin (b. 1972)

Tobias Martin was born in 1972 in Wiltshire, 12 miles from Stonehenge. Influenced by his idyllic rural upbringing, and the forces of nature and magic that permeated his childhood surroundings, these works have something of the mystical about them. Each piece is approached with precise observation and an acute interest in the minutiae of the subject matter, manipulating the material with a delicacy and lightness of touch. Despite being realised in heavy materials such as bronze, the resulting piece achieves a sense of movement and character that conveys the essential spirit of the animal.

Inspired by the work of Grinling Gibbons and Alfred Gilbert, Martin combines centuries old techniques with modern technology and materials. He has sculpted professionally for artists, film sets and exclusive interiors, as well as participating in numerous shows internationally including in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Switzerland, Turkey, UAE, UK and USA.

Ben Waddams.

Originally from Buckinghamshire, Ben is now living and working in Shropshire. He has lived in the States for many years on several different occasions and travelled in search of exotic wildlife across Central America and Africa.

Ben has a strict process to ensure each painting is of the absolute best quality he can produce, not just in artistic form but the habitat and environment of each subject he paints.

‘I feel I must know my subject intimately. I try my very best to study the species in the wild. I research its habitat, speak to experts, read books, study maps, try to understand its natural history, visit its environment, sketch it and photograph it. All this happens before I even think of picking up a paintbrush.’

An avid conservationist, Ben believes in putting true value on the natural world. His passion for wildlife shines through every single painting he creates, making the pieces come alive. In his own words, he wants his paintings to become ‘windows into the natural world. My aim is that they invoke a stirring in the minds of their audience and in turn my hope is that the audience themselves will be inspired to seek out and help protect the species in my paintings and of this planet.’
