Tell us a little about yourself and how you got to where you are right now?

I'm Rhonda, 23 years old, and was born and raised here in Brownwood. I enlisted into the Navy and served for 4 years and 8 months on active duty, which took me all over the world, including living in Italy for 3 years. After my time of service ended, I decided to come back home and enjoy the college life.

So, how did the ROCK experience get started?

I spent the last year of my service time in Whidbey Island, Washington and figured out about the painted rock movement there. That group was already highly established, and well over 28,000 members. When my time in the service ended, I moved back here and was disappointed that my hobby would essentially be coming to an end. I did a little research and saw that Brown County Rocks existed, but it only had 1,800 members and wasn't much of an active group. I messaged the original creator, Amanda Biggs, and asked her if I could help with the page, and as fate would have it, she was actively looking for someone to completely take it over. It all fell into line, like it was meant to be. I became the “head admin” on May 30th, 2018 and in 3 short months, the page has grown by 2,700 members, and is now at a staggering 4,500+ members.

What is the purpose now of people painting, looking for and hiding ROCKS? The original idea behind the movement when it first began, was just a random act of kindness. It started with someone randomly painting rocks and just leaving them around for others to find in hopes that it would make their day. The purpose now is still derived around acts of kindness, the only difference is, there's now a fanbase and social media is involved. Because of those two implementations, the movement has turned more into a community event and less of a “random act”.

About how many do you anticipate on doing this on a daily basis and where are they hiding and finding ROCKS? To p u t a nu mber on that is difficult. I usually spot families participating daily just when I'm driving downtown or past parks, so I know the number is high. Like mentioned, downtown Brownwood is a common location, along with the bigger parks in Brownwood, Early, and Bangs. The library and depot are pretty popular as well. There is also a trading post located at Moore Printing Company at 407 Fisk Ave in Brownwood. Many people love coming in and swapping out their rocks with another rock someone else left on the post.

What is one of your favorite stories about this little hobby for people?

I don't yet have a favorite story, but I will say that I absolutely LOVE when people recognize me in the stores or wherever and say “You're the rock lady!” They usually go on to tell me how much their family enjoys it and different experiences they've had with the hobby. It can get pretty stressful managing a rapidly growing group, but the positive comments and stories I'm told by the members makes it well worth it.

Is this a nation-wide movement or just in our little neck-of-thewoods?

It's definitely a nation-wide movement. Just about anywhere you go in the United States, there's a rock group for that local area. Some groups are only hundreds of members, others are in double digit thousands! This has even spread internationally, I've heard of many different rock groups in other countries. I don't have much knowledge about those, but I know they exist.

How does someone get involved in this opportunity, does it take money?

The simplest way to get involved, is to head over to “Brown County "ROCKS" (Texas) #325Rocks!” on Facebook and join the group. Money is only required when buying the paint, supplies, and rocks (if you choose to buy instead of f ind). It's a relatively inexpensive hobby that is certainly worth the small cost.

It keeps people active by hunting and hiding the rocks, helps them socialize by joining in with people who share a common interest, and keeps the creative juices flowing, not to mention it's a great stress reliever.

What is something that you would like to tell us that we have not already asked?

I would like to thank the businesses that have joined in and helped make the group more rewarding. A lot of the growth is thanks to them. Also, a huge thanks to the members involved for keeping the group active and fun. I may be the admin, but this group is nothing without them.

with Debbie Morelock Tell us a little about yourself and how you got into yoga?

I earned my degree in Holistic Nutrition in 1994 and then started teaching Yoga in 2002. Back in the early days there were not many people really interested in alternative healing choices for them. I have seen a great shift in this over the last few years, and that is why I decided to move my studio to town from the bed & breakfast. I wanted to be able to offer not only yoga but nutritional wellness classes to more people that have that interest. I am passionate about helping others live a more healthful life style.

Where is your studio located and what do you love about it?

Chandler downtown next to Steve's Market & Deli. I love the beautiful space that we have created for a yoga community to come and unstress from a busy life, enjoy fellowship with likeminded folks and become healthier through a yoga practice and wellness classes.

If I have never participated in yoga before what would I expect on my first visit?

We p refer for all our students that have no knowledge of Yoga to come to our beginner classes.

This will give them a foundation for learning each pose, how they might need to modify it for their body and then feel confident in moving into any of the other classes that we offer.

The beginner class is just a few weeks long or they can attend as long as they feel necessary to be ready for other classes.

If I am a seasoned yoga enthusiast, what could I expect at Blue Steel?

We have several certified teachers who will be offering classes in Traditional Hatha Yoga, which is the base of all yoga,

Yin Yoga, which is a deep stretch yoga to open up muscles and tissue in the body, Slow Flow yoga which is just a little faster pace of the same Hatha poses and everyone's favorite, Restorative Yoga. This class is offered at special times and is a class that you simply stay on the floor and do slow movements to rest and restore the body.

How do you see the art of Yoga benefitting your life?

Yoga has been a part of my life that has helped me in maintaining a healthy active lifestyle. As we age, it is important to keep our bodies flexible and moving, the old saying if you don't use it you lose it is very true.

Joints start to stiffen since we don't rotate them, arthritis sets in because we become sedentary and then all the organs start to slow down and shut down. Everyone can benef it from a consistent yoga practice; I think it is most beneficial if you do it consistently like twice a week or more.

We a r e a v e r y w e l c o m i n g community of yoga folks, and we welcome everyone to come and at least try it, our environment is fun and lighthearted. We are ver y tentative to helping out those that might have weight or physical issues that may take them longer to do some p oses. We have all sizes, shapes and ages that participate in our classes.
