We had a conversation with Steve Harris and Steve Puckett, the “Steves,” of Steves' Market and Deli, est.

11/26/96, in Historic Downtown Brownwood. The conversation twisted and turned much around the love of the community and people of Brownwood and any number of off-the-wall moments outside of Brownwood that circled back around to Brownwood.

“What got y'all to Brownwood?”

Harris: I was born here, but not raised here. I grew up in various places around Texas. After spending some time in Puerto Rico working, I came to visit my mom for Christmas and that is when I met Steve P. Puckett: Eckerd Drug Store…..I had been transferred here and was working at Eckerd's and met Steve H. “What do you like best about the deli?”

The environment of the space with all the colors and nuances and character here. We've long been cheerleaders for the preservation and revitalization of Downtown Brownwood. With only room enough for six tables (18 total seats), this historic 1928 building provides the opportunity for us to have “church” every day. We've resisted the urgings of many people over the years to grow larger because of that very fact. There is a spiritual moment with

interacting with people, preparing and serving food that helps nourish our spirit which is very much a gift to us.

What do your patrons like best about the deli?

Food, environment, service, family environment, fresh food. It's not unusual to have some traveling groups of people that have read about us (in Texas Monthly or other periodical where their food and community activism has been noted) and found their way to the Deli.

This punk rock Band from Japan, Peelander-Z was just a lot of fun to meet and serve their “to-go” lunch.

If you were to describe your “style” what word would you use?

Eclectic…. When you look at all the dining area's walls, shelves, windows, and exterior you will see an amazing co l l e c t i o n o f va r i o u s pictures, accolades, and

mementos. Everything means something to us, whether it is a picture of close friends/family or people we admire and draw inspiration. You will see the same eclectic vibe when looking at our menu and either seeing the variety or reading their descriptions.

Our “style” comes from our travels, various friends and living our life knowing that everyone has value.

When you see our care for animals, our desire for green space all around the deli it shows in our style.

Where do you get your menu ideas?

We start with the bread and go from there, and we have great partnerships, like the one we've fostered with Ben E. Keith from day one. We will often take inspiration from the individual that we are naming the item a f te r a n d th e n c r e a te th e sandwich and accompanying items around that thought.

Read our menu and you will understand.

As we were wrapping up the interview I wanted to get away from the talk about food and the great space they have created inside and outside of the deli. So, I asked them one question with two parts for the answer.

What is your favorite spot here in Brownwood (apart from the deli) and if you could change anything from your lives, what would it be? Thinking for just a short m o m e n t t h e y b o t h a n s we re d : th e S p u rl o ck homestead, Greenleaf Cemetery, Lake Brownwood State Park, Riverside Park and frankly, we don't want to change anything about what we are doing. We love Historic Downtown Brownwood, and we love the atmosphere that we have created here. As our great friend, Kay Leipzig, once said to us, “Be the change…..”

Laugh & Cry with

CRIMES OF THE HEART This tragicomedy relates the story of the three Magrath sisters, Meg, Babe, and Lenny, who reunite at Old Granddaddy's home in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, after Babe shoots her abusive husband. The sisters were raised in a dysfunctional family with a penchant for ugly predicaments. Each has endured her share of hardship and misery. Past resentments bubble to the surface as the sisters are forced to deal with assorted relatives and past relationships while coping with Babe's latest incident. Each sister is forced to face the consequences of the "crimes of the heart" she has committed.

Crimes of the Heart will be performed at the Ly r i c T h e a t re i n h i s t o r i c d o w n t o w n Brownwood. The Lyric Theatre is at its core a community theatre. Originally opened in 1914 as a vaudeville theatre, as the years marched on, the space became a place for silent movies, then later, the talkies. During the 1940s and WWII, the 1000-seat auditorium was filled each night with soldiers from Camp Bowie and local townspeople crowding into the theatre to watch movies. Just prior to the restoration/remodel of the Lyric, contractors found layers of carpet on the stairs to the balcony that indicated each remodel of the Lyric theatre. The initial Prairie-styled architecture and dĂŠcor transitioned into the iconic artdeco style. After closing (as a theater) in the 1950s, a dress shop took up residence until the current restoration took place. Though the iconic art-deco-styled sign and marquee returned to the exterior, the interior was returned to the Prairie style. The local non-

profit Lyric Performing Arts Company raised over $4 million to bring this jewel in the heart of the historic downtown district back to life.

Plays, musicals, movies, conferences, meetings, concerts and even one wedding have happened inside the space since the grand reopening took place in December of 2014.

With over 15,000 people filing through the doors each year, the events at the Lyric are only financially possible because of the local talent's willingness to volunteer their time and abilities to bring some wonderful productions to the stage.

Crimes of the Heart is a wonderful production that will have you crying, laughing and sometimes just a bit irritated as characters come to life on the historic Lyric stage. Make sure to bring some cash as the intermission provides the opportunity to have some authentic frozen gelato from the Turtle Gelateria or pick up some mouth-watering gummie-blossoms bursting with flavor. Tickets are modestly priced with balcony seats at $12 and orchestra (floor) seats at $15. The Lyric is a must-see when in Brownwood and you will not be disappointed!
