A.M.P.ING

WITH JONATHAN DUNLAP

Jo n a t h a n , te l l o u r re a d e r s a l i tt l e b i t a b o u t yourself/family/history? I'm 33 years old, born and raised in Central Texas. I had the privilege of growing up in Brownwood and meeting my wife Brittany here as well. We have been married 8 years in July and have a wonderful 4-yearold daughter named Olivia. What is your day job and how did you get into the art scene here in Brownwood? By day I am a Graphic Designer and Illustrator at ASAP Creative Arts, we are a Custom Print & Design shop located here in town. Getting tied into the Art Scene locally was actually very easy. I already had several friends involved in various capacities around the area, and with the help of fellow artist Fred Spencer I was able to find many ways to contribute of my time and talents. I know that you are a musician yourself – how do you express what music means to you? Yes, of the many hats I have worn in life, I have been a musician longer than anything else. I began playing guitar in my teens and never looked back. Over the years, discovering what music is to me has been a very interesting journey. Music has meant different things to me dependent on my involvement with it. As a fan, music is a vicarious adventure with likeminded individuals. As a profession, music is my way of looking through the other side of the kaleidoscope and saying what needs to be said in the most unique way I can. How did AMP get started and what keeps it going at the Art Center in Downtown Brownwood? AMP began in the spring of 2016 and our mission has been the same from day one, a monthly event

2 ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

showcasing local artist in as many arenas as possible. We a c h i e ve t h i s w i t h t h e i d e a o f b u i l d i n g a community of artists that enjoy and respect each other's craft. With this kind of support system we can grow and encourage artists of all ages and mediums all the while growing the arts scene itself. AMP is kept going through the continued support of the Brownwood Art Association and through a strong network of attendees and musicians alike. What type and variety of musicians/music is experienced at these gatherings? Brownwood is home to a very eclectic collection of musicians and on any given night you can get a very clear picture of that. We have had everything from blues, jazz, and classical to country, rock, and folk music. We try to keep all of the above contained in the acoustic format as to make the evening enjoyable for all attendees. The Art Center is a special place – what is it like for these “concerts” so-too-speak? The Art Center is an invaluable asset to our community and we are working to increase awareness of its existence so that the Brownwood Community can benefit from all it has to offer. With that in mind we follow a “listening room open mic” mentality. We keep the Art Center's special “vibe”, so to speak, by having all seating pointed stage-ward and having the attendees keep the conversation to a respectable volume. We do this in an effort to give the musicians a captive

audience to connect with and to give everyone else the chance to appreciate and enjoy the performance. What would a typical person attending AMP experience on one of these AMP nights? Art in the traditional senses of painting, drawing, and sculpture are always on display within our BAA monthly exhibits. Art in the musical portrayal is steady through the evening with a growing and diverse group of musicians from every background imaginable. We have recently been partnering with various food trucks in the area, not only to provide you with a relaxed Thursday evening of entertainment, b u t a l s o to b r i n g dinner to you. Our event is for all ages, so you can bring the whole family! With a ver y laid back atmosphere, you can participate, create, or you can just unwind with family and friends. Do you have a personal favorite style of music and if so, why? Put simply, no. As I have grown as a musician and a person I have found every style of music to be enjoyable for their own unique reasons.

FamilyJune 2nd Day 325-643-6376 FB @LehnisRailroadMuseum 700 E Adams St • Brownwood, TX 76801

Do the groups have to audition to play at the event? What are the ground rules for those that would want to be a part of the evening by playing at the event? Our roster is built on a first come first serve basis with the length of your set being determined by the amount of performers for the evening. There is no audition process; we only ask that performers respect the family atmosphere and our venue. It also is completely free to attend or perform! Any thoughts you may have that have not been addressed in the previous questions? Brownwood is growing, and its continued growth is entirely dependent on the support of our local community. We encourage everyone to get out and support everything going on around you. AMP is one of many events that happen monthly at the Art Center, but we are also one of so many more that happen every day in our local area. Art, Music, Theatre, and Food are just to name a few. Get out, get involved, and support so we can see this positive community progress through! The Art Center is located at 215 FISK AVENUE in Brownwood, Texas. AMP is the 3rd Thursday of EVERY month from 6-9pm AMP and all other regular Brownwood Art Association events are free of charge and open to the public.* Go to www.brownwoodart.com for more details. *Muse & Merlot is a special monthly event with spots available at signup for a fee.

ARTISAN ORIGINS

Meet Rebecca Morelock

What is your history here in the Brownwood area – nothing elaborate just a sense of who you are for the readers? I have lived in Brownwood for the better part of 18 years. I have worked many places, including 3 coffee shops, multiple food establishments, I was assistant innkeeper at Star of Texas B&B, taught yoga, and I have baked and sold artisan breads and pastries out of my home under the Texas Cottage Law for the past 6 years. What made you want to get into this Artisan opportunity? I started the Artisan Market 2 years ago this September, as a way for myself and other local artisans to sell their crafts and for the community to have a way to come together and support the local makers. How many artisans do you have each gathering and what types of artisans are they? We began our first season with only 5 or 6 vendors. This season (our 4th) we have had on average 25 vendors! We have a wide variety of artisans, bakers, soap makers, jewelry makers, custom hand painted signs, lavender, honey, leather goods, kombucha, canned goods, custom walking sticks, nonprofits, knit & sewn items, metal art, vegetables, watercolors, hand-crafted outdoor/indoor décor, pottery, plants, and more. Lots of different things!! Do the same artisans come each time? Yes and no. We have a good number of regular vendors that come almost every market. Then we have others, who set up as they can. I'm not strict on how often you set up, life happens and things come up. I'm just happy to have them there when they can be! If an artisan would like to participate what do they need to do to be a part of the soiree? Our #1 requirement, is that what you are selling is homemade, baked, hand-crafted, or grown/harvested. We are a 100% “artisan” market (of course, there is some flexibility).

6 ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Small-batch, high quality. We have an excellent group of vendors who care passionately about what they are offering the community! Direct message The Artisan Market Facebook page, email theartisanmarketbwd@gmail.com, or call/text 325-9989-2600 to inquire about becoming a vendor! You have had several locations over the past but have now landed on the fringes of the historic downtown district – how is that going for ya? We have been located in 3 great locations! We began at the awesome little run-down gas station across from Brownwood Decorating, then set up in the empty lot beside the Salvation Army, and we have now ended up in St. John's beautiful lot beside the church. We love the partnership with St. Johns! We donate a percentage of our fee to the church for the food pantry (or as needed). They have been ever so gracious with letting us use this space and we hope to be here for many markets to come. Do you have entertainment at the twice-monthly events and if so, how does one get “picked” to entertain? Actually, we have been trying to get live music from the very first market on, and have had a few people play here and there, but this is the first season we have had a line up of bands and singers! We have had the 9th Street Band, Zac & Nem, and Tifani Ann Music so far. We would love for more people to come perform! They can private message the Artisan Market Facebook page, email theartisanmarketbwd@gmail.com, or call/text 325-998-2600 to inquire about playing. What does the future look like for the Artisan Market? I see the Market only getting bigger (within the restraints of the size of the lot) and better, with lots of live music, maybe some food trucks, possibly a different schedule for when we will be setting up to better accommodate our vendors and the community. What would you like our readers to know, that the previous questions have not addressed? I love my vendors, because they work hard on their craft. They spend many hours, lots of money, a lot of energy to create things for YOU. Our Market will only be successful if the community shows up to support it! Even if you don't buy stuff, just having a good f low of people come through is so encouraging, knowing that the community supports us. We appreciate everyone who comes out! 9am-noon, 2nd and 4th Saturdays through June (until its super hot!)
