A PEEK AT

NATHANA’S

WITH TONYA LINDEMAN

Tonya, tell us a bit about yourself – family, how you got to Brownwood…. I was born and raised in Lubbock, Texas but moved to Brownwood to attend Howard Payne University and be near family. I attended HPU for a year and actually was a Business Major until I met the love of my life, Bill. I can honestly say he has been on this adventure with me every step of the way and I'm beyond blessed he chose to put up with me!! We have one daughter, Katie, who is married to Keal and 2 grand babies who we absolutely adore. Before Nathana's Nathana's on South Broadway is a hopping place – tell us how Nathana's came into existence. I was the Director Of Student Activities at Howard Payne for 10 years. Little did I know that job was preparing my heart for the adventure I was about to take. I purchased Nathana's in March of 2008 and this year we celebrated our 10th anniversary. The f irst year of business I remained at Howard Payne to build my business, but after a year decided to dive head first into Nathana's. I was a risk taker, and excited to build what I knew Nathana's could be. Through my job at HPU I was able to meet so many friends, and students who I have remained in contact with, some who have worked for me, and now shop with me. What is the most popular part of the Nathana's experience. When I think about what Nathana's was when we first purchased it, I'm beyond humbled on all it has become. When we first purchased Nathana's it was solely a tanning salon with 6 tanning beds and two part time stylist. It didn't happen overnight, but with hard work, support from my family, friends and love from my community, we have expanded into another side of our building with hair 8 stylist masseuse, 7 UV beds, 1 spray booth, airbrush tanning, makeup provider, and a gift store area full of the most unique gifts in town and clothes for all ages. At Nathana's you get the full experience at a classy establishment. From the tan, to the hair, makeup, massages, head to toe outfit or even the perfect gift. We truly think about 2 ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

women and what their needs are. We know women are busy in running a household, to having a career, and chasing children, so providing a salon that is able to provide everything in one place for them really sets us apart from the rest. Being a successful retail shop owner in the “online world” can be a significant challenge these days – what do you do to address dynamics like one sees today? Yo u w i l l a l w a y s h a v e competition but now so more than ever, especially with the rapid growth of the online world. Instead of letting it get us down, we a d a p t a n d u s e i t to o u r advantage. The fact that customers are still choosing us, they are choosing us to stay local, motivates us to provide a customer experience unlike any other. When someone shops online they don't get a friendly face, or immediate help if something is wrong with the product. At Nathana's we pride ourselves on customer service and the full shopping experience. What are your plans for the future of Nathana's? When asked what our future plans or growth would be I think it would be to make interior updates. I want to have all the new and upcoming equipment and a fun inviting atmosphere. We want to continue to stay up with new and latest trends. From products to equipment. I want my employees to have what they need to provide the best ser vices. How do you like being in a historical downtown shopping district like Brownwood? We are so blessed to live in a town that supports downtown businesses, and a city that promotes the area. When having a business in downtown it's so

much more than just your business. Your part of the history, your part of the experience and your able to truly welcome visitors to our community. A downtown area is always the core of a town, it's where visitors come, it's where you host community events and the list goes on. So, to be a part of the downtown area, it's a true blessing and we are honored to be a part of it and the Brownwood community. I enjoy working side by side with my competitors and Love the help we give each other. It's not about us it's about our customers and what we can provide for them.

Frozen Treasure Rescue!

Family August 4th Day Here's your chance to answer a question you know we should have asked but didn't get to. I work with some amazing ladies and call each one of them my friend. We are like a family and I want them to feel comfortable and want to come to work. I tell each of them I want to treat them the way I would want to be treated. I come from a long line of working women in retail. The Staton blood runs deep in Brownwood. My grandmother Margie Staton was the founder and owner of The Glamour Shop. My Aunt Mary Jane Holland and cousins Brenda Goodwin and Sherrie Martin have been great role models and instilled a customer service work ethic. I love my family and friends and appreciate everything they have done for me but I give all the success and glory to God

BROWN COUNTY

MUSEUM OF HISTORY

with Wanda Ferguson

1. How did you get to your position as the BCMOH? I jointed the Museum Board in 2006 when Bill Hamilton was President and Ron Watson, with the City of Brownwood was assisting with the marketing. In 2014, we started planning the 75th Anniversary of Camp Bowie ---a week long celebration with HPU and Tarleton assisting with symposium and demonstrations, and 36th Infantry Band performing in the Lyric Theater. In 2015, I retired from Early Chamber of Commerce and was hired as fulltime Museum Director. I'm not from here but I am envious of the rich history that is here in Brown County. 2. Tell us about how the Museum came be here in Brownwood. In 1981 when the new jail was completed and prisoners were moved, the County Judge Ernest Cadenhead and the Commissioners Court were discussing tearing down the Old Jail and making a parking lot. Pat Coursey addressed the Commissioners Court several times and appealed to them not to tear down the building that the historical value of it was extremely high and citizens and Brown County Historical Commission would look down on such action by the County Commissioners. After some negotiating, Pat Coursey and the Commissioners Court agreed for the Brown County Historical Commission to lease the Old Jail for $1.00 a year for 99 years. A Board of Directors was formed and fundraising began. Action was to ask for $1,000.00 donations to become a sustaining and a lifetime member of the Museum. They raised over $60,000.00 in 1982. The Museum Board had a Gala to celebrate the new Museum beginnings with Citizens National Bank hosting and Kroger Grocery Store donating the food and drinks. Each donor has a brass plaque on the wall in the Old Jail. 3. What are some of the special displays that one will find the museum? Medical exhibit: - There is a large area of Dr. Mollie Armstrong's facts and artifacts. She was the first woman optometrist in Texas & opened her office in 1899. In our Native American exhibit there is a replica of the Comanche Tipi plus bear skin and buffalo hide. Also, 5 cases of projectiles and spear points plus other Comanche artifacts. The Pioneer Exhibit:-- one room log cabin fully furnished, wooden wagon used in 1880's, one room school house built around 1904 by the second black family in Brown County for his 10 children to begin with.. Camp Bowie Exhibit is really the crème de la crème with 10 cases of artifacts and photos, plus a German Howitzer Canon, M1 Rifle, complete field radio setup and more!

6 ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

4. What is your favorite exhibit and what is the most popular exhibit with guests I am really proud of Dr. Mollie Armstrong- she was smart, strong willed, put herself through two courses on optometry in order to get her license, convinced Gov. Ma Ferguson to help get legislation passed to require that those who would fit and sell glasses had to have license issued by the State. Her son, Richard Armstrong, was the band leader of the Old Gray Mare Band for years. She also started several organizations around Brownwood like Brownwood chapter of Local Business and Professional Women and she was Director of Brownwood Chamber of Commerce. And more Most Popular –with children under 5 it is our KIDZ ZONE which is older items that they can touch and play with, also a sand pit to dig up tiny fossils. Young at heart-- the favorite is the BIRDSONG MINIATURE CIRCUS that has lots of moving parts including animals. With the guys--- it is CAMP BOWIE EXHIBIT-brings out the patriot spirit by looking at their sacrifices and heroism. 5. When is the Museum open and does it cost to attend ? Hours of Operation Thursday-Friday: 10:00 am to 2:00 pm Saturdays: 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Special tours are available Phone: 325-641-1926 Admission is $3 – Children under 5 admitted free 6. what is something that you would like to say that we have not asked? We need your readers! We need volunteers even if you are not from Brown County, if you can research, file, organize, categorize, talk to visitors, sweep the floor……whatever your talent- I am sure you'll find a place with us. You can make your own hours, dress comfortably and see first hand artifacts that walk through the door almost every week. We would like to be open more days and with additional volunteers, that can come to fruition. Drop by or call at 325-641-1926.
