Stanford Beer Library - Deconstruct the block A new library for Stanford Beer in John Moores University

Deconstruction the block: Volume analysis-points, lines, areas and intersections Limitation In a limited and rigid site, the design is difficult to give an interesting form, coupled with a variety of requirements, which makes the design more disciplined. When looking at the design brief, the building needs to function as exhibition, cafe, library and office space, but due to the limited site, it seems difficult to make changes and inspirations in the building form and space arrangement. Strategy Deconstructionism has infinite possibilities to release forms and masses, and it can be dismantled with points, lines and areas. In this design, it deconstructs the space, site, and function, and releases the logical connection between inherent features, breaks the modularity of the requirements in the building, and provides each individual people with free choices in every posibility.

01

Aresa: The site is between two university buildings, which form several areas with the garden on campus.

Lines: Circulation, ramps, stairs, roads and borders form lines which intersect at specific angles.

Nodes: Extract the entrance, plants, necessary facilities, the waiting points, then a diagram of the points can be presented.

Composition: Pull areas into volume, and generate lines to surfaces, move points to form lines and finally frame a mass.

02

Sight Analysis Window opens to the green space to ensure the scenery and privacy. The ramp determines the main entrance and entry method.

Ramp and reception Determine the basic form of the ramp, reorganize the reception block, and use the steps to plan the circulation area.

03

Boundaries and Steps Defining the floor steps then clean the boundaries , and deformate the basic mass.

Complete details Add basic components, walls, partitions, pillars and windows to deepen the sense of deconstruction.

Circulations

Reception

The main staircase is connecting the exhibition hall and library floor, while a lift is arranged next to the entrance.

The reception block faces the garden area. This area is divided into a closed reception room and a viewing window straight to the ramp.

Coffee shop The cafe is divided into indoor and outdoor sections. The coffee window is opened at the end of the ramp. Still, there is a coffee counter indoors.

Lecture theatre Visitors can enter the lecture room from the exihibition hall and after the lecture, they can consider going to the library on the upper floor.

04

05

Express the Function Ground Floor The office space is arranged half-underground as it is not in the choice of visitors in the entire system but still one of the functions in the building. And because of this characteristic, its entrance is attached to the lobby on the first floor, so that office and the staff can guarantee the highest privacy in the building. First Floor As a floor that takes into account the functions of cafe, reception and lectures, it needs strong tolerance and diversity of arrangement. Designed in a semi-opened space, the coffee shop also assumes the function of transition with outdoor seats and indoor tables. The exterior part is connected to a polyline ramp which leads people walked in from the garden and other university buildings around. Then, when enter the building, they are free to chose where to go. The lecture? The exihibition? Or just have a nice book to read? Second Floor Reading and exhibitions are arranged on this floor, but there is no clear boundairy between the two parts. 06

Ramp Design There are four nodes: starting, linking, shifting, and ending in the ramp design, which combine the relationship between lines and points. Starting point in to the yard. Linking a platform for stay. Shifting the turning of the direction and touching the boundary. Finishing Transition to interior. 07

Floor Connection and Circulation Lecture Room The ladder of the lecture theatre functions as part of the staircase to the upper floor. Thus, the lecture theatre has some chioces for people that attend the lecture, if you want to continue the exihibition tour, you are free to go upstairs from the staircase at the back. If you want to leave the lecture room or back to the cafe, just go through the door where you came in. Circulation The moving line is designed to along the moving up steps of the building form and divided into two parts, the stair system and the lift system. The stair system inclunding the main staircase in the middle of the first, connecting the office space and the third floor, and the stair at the back of the lecture theatre, which is only the way for visitors enter the exihibition hall. 08

Plan composition The first floot consist of outdoor part and indoor part, the main curculation is starts from the ramp, and end by the ramp finishing with leading crowd flow into the exihibition hall. 09

Section Form and Choice The role of deconstruction and reorganization in form and function can be clearly seen from the section. The stepped form roughly divides the function, and at the same time it does not affect the user's free choice between the functions. Apperance and Function The design breaks down the building's components into parts, and then reorganizes them into new ones to show the free appearance that matches the scattered function in the building. Windows, doors, pillars and staircases are the embodiment of this kind of thinking. 10
