Editor’s letter...

The route has now been confirmed for the Olympic torch in Doncaster! The route will capture the heart of Doncaster and there should be plenty of opportunities for spectators to get a glimpse of the famous torch!

We have published the route from Connisbrough to Hatfield, street by street in this month‘s arrow. There is so much to celebrate this year with both the Olympics and the Queens Diamond Jubilee and Doncaster council want to hear your plans. If you have organised a community event no matter how small, Sally Dean wants to hear about it. Sally‘s details can be found on the news pages.

Barnburgh & Harlington Annual Village Carnival Barnburgh & Harlington Annual Village Carnival takes place on Saturday 16th June on Church Lane Recreation Ground. THE DON GORGE Since reporting our concerns about the new proposal for the Fish Pass and Small Hydro Scheme at Lower Sprotborough in December, no further information has been received. A recent meeting of the Don Gorge Strategic Partnership reported that no plans have yet been submitted and, until they are, we are unable to make our feelings known.

In the meantime, the Community Group has been trying to make progress on the parking problem. There are two possibilities, both on the left-hand side going up Nursery Lane.

We feel it is essential that more parking is provided as the visitor rate is increasing year on year and the environment is being spoiled in the process, with grass verges broken down, etc, but of course visitors would have to be willing to use these new sites even though they might be a litle further away. It is noticeable when visiting other heritage sites that local authorities have co-operated to enforce specific parking areas by implementing parking restrictions and this may also be necessary.

The current closure of the hairpin bend and Mill Lane has been proving difficult for those who usually travel to Warmsworth across the River Don at this point, but progress is being made and hopefully all will be back to normal by the time you are reading this. Certainly, the work was necessary and the footpath, which was in dire need of repair, will be a vast improvement for walkers.

Just a remainder that we now have a Blog where items relating to the Don Gorge are published on a regular basis.

One site, near the small pond, is owned by about twenty different people, all of whom have to be contacted before it can be used as a car park. So far their reactions have been fairly positive. If this was agreed, there is a good chance that our volunteers could do most of the work necessary, though it would need fencing and gating. A woodland walk could be created to enable safe access to the riverside.

The other possibility is a small piece of land just beyond the Boat Inn car park. Lafarge have donated this land for the purpose of car parking, but more work would probably be needed to make this site usable.

I am sure you will be aware this is a very important year for us all as we are celebrating not only the Queens Diamond Jubilee in June but also the fantastic news that the Olympic Torch Relay will be coming to Doncaster later on in June, in readiness for the events across the UK. Yorkshire Main Commemorative Trust The management committee and the trustees feel it‘s an appropriate time to offer a further update on the progress of the commemorative project.

The Edlington NUM Banner was recently returned to the village after 25 years in storage and it‘s now displayed on a permanent basis in the Martinwells Centre.

We would like to express our thanks to the community of Edlington and to the teachers and pupils of year five from Edlington Victoria primary school. The presentation and poetry on the day was outstanding and we have received excellent feedback from the community of Edlington. A number of retired miners were present during the presentation and became quite emotional during the children‘s recital of the poem. The Edlington NUM banner is part of the history and industrial heritage of our village, many thanks for making this a very special occasion.

Following concerns raised by members of the community regarding the open access to the Community Centres grounds and the potential security issues around the protection of the Commemorative project, we are pleased to announce that we have been successful in obtaining a substantial grant from Wren Waste Recycling Group, Landfill Communities Fund to provide fencing around the perimeter wall and access gates .The fencing project will be aesthetic but will also offer a measure of security. The necessary brick work and the fencing project will commence in the near future (march 2012).

The local Dolomite Quarry at Warmsworth has donated a large piece of limestone which will be the plinth for the mining statue. The plinth is now in place thanks to the support of Local Councillors and the DMBC local neighbourhood team. The statue has been sculpted and now requires casting in a composite material with a finished bronze effect. We are currently seeking a sponsor/s for this part of the project. The title of the mining statue will selected by trust members from names suggested by pupils from local schools.

Work will also commence in the near future on the Commemorative Garden project adjacent to the Community Centre with opportunities for members of the community to purchase and plant a memorial tree to a loved one. Further details to be published in the near future.

We will also be announcing our spring fund raising events in the next few weeks, please follow our Facebook site and newsletters for regular updates.

Individual members of the Trust continue to meet the administrative costs of running the Trust, postage, printing, telephone and transport etc these costs are quite substantial.

The Commemorative Trust is community led and we continue to seek support and sponsorship to complete the project, many thanks for your support to date.

Karmaclay in Warmsworth opened in February 2012. It is Rebecca Stamford-Pyle’s second studio, her first being at Elsecar Heritage Centre in Barnsley.

Rebecca is from, and still lives in Warmsworth and it has always been a dream to open a studio in her hometown. Rebecca say‘s ‗When the old cottage came available I just knew it was perfect for my craft venture.

The cottage is very quaint it has been a pet feed shop, Trevor Millers Television shop and my Granddad believes it was a coach house many moons ago, so you can imagine the feeling it has inside.‘ Up until June 2011 Rebecca was a solicitor in Leeds, but being a single Mum to two young children made it very difficult to achieve a healthy work life balance. This forced Rebecca to follow her real ambition which was to provide a place where adults and children alike would come to be creative, express themselves and have time to relax together. Rebecca made a brave decision and established Karmaclay at Elsecar, the concept worked and Rebecca now hopes her new studio in Warmsworth can also be a great success.

Rebecca explains how it all works, ‗a customer will pick their pots, pick their colours and then get painting. Once they have finished I glaze and fire their piece in the kiln and they can then collect it a week later. We also do commissioned pieces that we paint as gifts for birthdays, weddings, christenings etc . We have hosted many a birthday party/christening/ hen party and even though I am biased I can truly say that they are great because they are a little bit different and all the children can sit and talk rather than running off. Plus they get their pot to keep a week later which is a great addition to a party bag.

Karmaclay also do baby prints in clay so parents have a memory of their baby's tiny hands or feet forever.‘ Karmaclay can also visit schools, nurseries and out of school clubs or they can host team building events or attend residential homes. They regularly attend ward m3 in Sheffield Children's Hospital to paint with the children and their siblings.

The studio is open 9.30am-4.30pm WednesdaySaturday and 10.30am-4.30pm on Sunday.

The studio is open every day in school holidays including the Easter break.

WARMSWORTH CRICKET CLUB Warmsworth Cricket Club was founded in 1877 and is still going strong today some 135 years later; we have teams ranging from Under 11 through to Senior. The 1 st and 2nd Teams play Saturday Cricket in the Ben Bailey Homes South Yorkshire Senior Cricket League Div 2 and 4.We have a thriving Junior Section and a 3rd eleven playing on Sundays in the Barnsley and District Sunday League. Coaching is carried out under the supervision of ECB qualified coaches and we are always on the lookout for new players both at Junior and Senior Level.

The club has a Licensed Bar with Sky Sports and is generally open every night, Sunday lunchtime and for the matches during the season. The Club is a member‘s only club but we welcome visitors and new membership applications. Membership for both playing and non-playing members runs from 1st April to 31st March.

We are currently in the midst of fund raising to try and replace the flat roof which after many years of patching up is now beyond repair. We are hoping this will be replaced with a tiled pitched roof at the end of the 2012 Season. If anyone would like to help with fund raising or make a donation please get in touch.

The club can be booked for Birthday Parties, Funerals etc, numbers are limited to 80 and there is a small charge for the hire. We will provide staff to man the bar for your event.

A Woman’s Work...

Elizabeth Crawshaw was born in 1776 in Yorkshire. She married her husband John who was 5 years her senior and by the year 1799 and at the age of just 23, she was a farmer of over 150 acres at Warmsworth.

My wife often likes to point out the various hardships she endures as she juggles being a mum, a wife, a house-wife and a full time employee. I try not to argue with her on this as 12 years of experience has taught me to bow to her superior knowledge on the subject. Let us think though, for a few paragraphs, about the workload of Elizabeth Crawshaw and how she managed to successfully run a farm and a family in the early 1800s.

The land that Elizabeth farmed was not her own.

She rented it from William Battie-Wrightson Esq. As with all landlords, occasionally there would be rent increases and for this to be administered fairly, a valuation of the property had to take place.

One such valuation was undertaken in 1799 commissioned by Battie-Wrightson and is a fantastic insight into the extent of Elizabeth‘s responsibilities. As landlord, he leased out a total of four farms in Warmsworth. Elizabeth‘s farm was one of the larger estates and consisted of Croft, Pickhill, Lime Kiln Close, Low West Yard, Spittle Yard and Common, Ridding Close, Wood Nook Close, Beck Close, Great Wood Nook, Glebe in Turnpike Close, Burr Flatt, Middle Field, Don Field, and Church Field, to name just some of it.

The whole estate was surveyed at 150 acres, 1 rood, 28 perches (or today, 150.425 acres) and the yearly rental value was £151 4s 0d (or approximately £9000).

Some of the place names that are listed above are still hinted at today with road names such as Glebe Street, Common Lane, and Croft Road. Middle Field is now the site of the huge Warmsworth quarry just off the A630 Sheffield Road, and Church Field is now the extensive housing estate which has Tenter Lane as its spine.

It is unclear to me without further research exactly where Elizabeth lived although the survey does make mention of a rather large house with outbuildings and a yard. Under closer scrutiny I would guess that the area immediately surrounding Warmsworth Hall was its location, one of the reasons being, that Lime Kilns are mentioned and there were such kilns on land adjacent to the Warmsworth Hall around this time.

Certain restrictions were placed on the lease and one such is as follows: ―Elizabeth Crawshaw should be allowed to have no more than 24 acres of enclosed land in tillage (or ploughed) at one time, which will complete a regular round of fallow (uncultivated) with the field lands. She may change the other enclosed land by taking up and seeding down, but should not plough High and Low West Yard, Lime Kiln Close, Crofts, and the Don Ings‖.

She also had Tithes to pay, on top of her rent which amounted to somewhere in the region of £30 (£1,700) per year.

Later in life, she and her husband John, although still living in Warmsworth, had handed the running of the farm over to their Daughter, also called Elizabeth. This Elizabeth was a single parent to Edward age 14, Eliza age 13, Catherine age 10, and Jessy age 7. She did have help from her Father (now 70 years of age!) and from 3 female and 3 male servants, all of whom are listed in the 1841 census, a luxury that my wife wishes for from time to time.

As we try to imagine farming in those times, we think of horse-drawn ploughs and jolly plough boys taking for lunch of bread and cheese under the shade of a stately oak tree, warm summer days in the great Yorkshire countryside.

This couldn‘t be further from the truth. It was a life of hardship and toil as Elizabeth‘s father would tell us if he were here now.

There are those of us that complain from time to time at the thought of retirement age increasing and of the responsibilities that go hand in hand with providing for our families but, spare a thought for Elizabeth and her Father, John. While ever there was breath in their bodies and they were physically able, they worked the land in Warmsworth in order to put bread on the table for their families.

Olympic Torch Route The Olympic Torch will pass through Doncaster on Tuesday 26th June on it‘s way from Sheffield to Cleethorpes.

The route starts at Connisbrough and works it‘s way through Doncaster towards Hatfield.

Torch Bearers will share the task of running through Doncaster and many schools and businesses will be involved in this historic moment. Many thousands will be expected to line the route to catch a glimpse of the famous torch. Many people have asked ‗what happens if the flame goes out?‘ Apparently this had happened many times before and it is simply re-lit! The torch has travelled in the past both in air and under water and remained alight.

Below is a copy of the proposed route on Tuesday 26th June 2012. Let‘s hope the flame burns brightly for Doncaster!
