your new Arrow! For those of you who have not heard of The Arrow, we are a small group of local community magazines which focus on village life.

The Arrow started in 2005 with The Branton & Auckley Arrow and we now have seven magazines which are distributed monthly, in and around Doncaster. It was quite an emotional occasion. The banner followed the life of the Branch at galas, demonstrations and funerals. It is part of Edlington‘s industrial heritage and now it has a new home in the heart of the village. ―It was great that Caroline Flint could come and spend so much time with us. MPs are very busy people, but it raised the profile of the event and people really appreciated it.‖

Caroline Flint MP and local councillors joined local NUM members this week for the unveiling of the Edlington NUM banner, which is to be put on permanent display at the Martinwells Centre.

Said Caroline: ―People in Edlington know what this banner represents – and the journeys it has made. I met men and women today who found the ceremony very moving and want the history of the NUM Edlington Branch and the Yorkshire Main colliery to be remember. This historic banner‘s new home at the Martinwells Centre will remain a living reminder of the history of this community.‖ Said Frank Arrowsmith, Chair of the Yorkshire Main Commemorative Trust: ―It was a brilliant event and the Victoria pupils‘ poetry was fantastic. It was great to meet some old friends from as far afield as Blyth in the North East and Nottingham.

by Frank Arrowsmith and Jimmy Kelly from a dusty Doncaster Council archive. The Martinwells Centre will now be its permanent home.

A Great New Event for 2012 Runners from across the country and even beyond will be hitting the streets of Doncaster next May as the town will be hosting its first mass running event for many years. The Brooks Run Doncaster 10k takes place on Sunday 13 May and will see people taking part in a 10k which will start and finish at the famous Racecourse and taking in the Markets area, Town Centre and Town Fields.

The event promises to attract participants from across the UK and even runners from abroad. A Corporate Team Challenge will also feature in the event, with teams of 3 or more employees from the same firm competing to win the Corporate Shield.

Following the 10k event will be a Community Challenge Family Fun Run for children and families, with all finishers receiving a medal and certificate.

Julian Moorhouse of organisers, Metres to Miles said ―We are delighted to be working with the council to bring this event to Doncaster. The response has been tremendous since we opened entries last week. We had hundreds of people register in the first 36 hours, with entrants coming from London, Cumbria and even one entrant from the Isle of Man. It really is a great year to get the event off the ground, 2012 is a tremendous year for sport in UK and this event is for everyone‖.

Councillor Cynthia Ransome, Cabinet Member for Communities said: ―The event promises something for all, from the Family Fun Run to the more competitive races - each taking in some of the wonderful open spaces that we have in Doncaster.‖ The event has attracted sponsorship from global sports brand Brooks, and UK Marketing Manager Mike East was delighted to come on board as title sponsor for the event for the next two years ―We have been looking for a

War Horse Review by Hannah Cousins “Separated by war. Tested by battle. Bound by friendship.”

War Horse, directed by Steven Spielberg, tells the captivating story of the firm friendship between man and beast. The Great War approaches, and threatens to break the bond between Albert, a young farmer boy, and the temperamental thorough-bred horse Joey.

After Albert’s father sells Joey to the soldiers enlisting war horses, Albert enters the British Army, and Joey is sent to France. A harrowing yet inspirational chain of events unfolds, plunging the two deeper into the world of war, before the strongest ties that hold them back are broken by the perpetual power of love.

War Horse is based on the children’s book by Michael Morpurgo, of the same name, which was published in 1982, and has received many nominations and awards for the amazing portrayal. The film appeals to both young and old, and is a must-see in my opinion. The film is a tear-jerker, but also has a few laughs within the script, which enhances the skilled acting from the cast, consisting of talented newcomers and veterans of drama. War Horse highlights Spielberg’s exceptional gift of directing, and deserves to be added to the rest of the acclaimed Spielberg classics.

When I think of the village of Barnburgh, I think - ‘Cat and Man’.

I would be very surprised if you haven’t heard the tale of Percival Cresacre and the wildcat.

Legend has it that Cresacre was riding on horseback and wrestling with a large wild cat right up to the Church. In the end they killed each other at the same time and the blood still stains the church steps. It seems to me that this story has stuck to the village like glue much the same as the ‗Hickleton Skulls‘ and ‗Sir Walter Scott and Sprotbrough‘.

Legends are fantastic little pieces of history based on nothing but hearsay. The Cat and Man legend is a fantastic example of a cross between Chinese whispers and a fisherman describing how big his catch was. I wouldn‘t at all be surprised if the original story went something like this:

“Percy was riding home one night when Mrs Smith’s moggy startled his horse and caused it to rear up. Percy was thrown to the ground and sprained his ankle, THE END”!

Personally, I much prefer to delve into the sort of history that is based on the facts and there is a lesser known story from Barnburgh which is far more factual. It concerns the ‗More‘ family.

That part of the Cat and Man tale which is true is the family name. The Cresacres did indeed inhabit Barnburgh from 1281 as the family had moved to England to be with their King, William the Conqueror. The Cresacres were the Lords of Manor of Barnburgh right up until 1528 when, because of a distinct lack of male heirs, Annie Cressacre, who had inherited the estate in 1512, was married to John More at the age of 18.

John was the son of the famous Sir Thomas More, Henry VIII‘s trusted chancellor, who, like many of his closest advisors and family, met his doom at the Kings hand. He had earned the trust of the King over a great many years so that by 1517 he was instrumental in quelling a London uprising against

foreigners. In 1518 he became a member of the Privy Council and was knighted in 1521. He was made Speaker of the House of Commons in 1523 and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in 1525. He stood up to the King in 1527 when he refused to endorse his plans to divorce Katherine of Aragon, however, despite this rather large difference of opinion he was still trusted enough to be made Lord Chancellor of all England in 1529.

Despite earning the highest of regard from King Henry it did not end well for Sir Thomas, as, when it started to go Barnburgh Hall wrong, his fall from grace happened quickly. By 1532 he had resign through ill health, although the true reason was probably more to do with the Kings desire to break from Rome and create his own Church of England. He refused to attend the coronation of Anne Boleyn in 1533 which came to King Henry‘s notice. From that point on, Henry had it in for him and he was implicated in all manner of foul deeds. He was eventually imprisoned in the Tower of London where he was tried and found guilty of treason for which charge he was beheaded on 6th July, 1635.

Annie Cresacre‘s husband, the afore-mentioned John More was a Catholic, just like his father Sir Thomas. This meant that they had to be secretive about their religion and there was even a Priest Hole in Barnburgh Hall.

The More‘s went on to live at Barnburgh Hall and to be Lords of the manor until 1822. After that time, the fine country residence passed through various hand until eventually, the Coal Board, who were in residence at the time, decided it was suffering from terrible mining subsidence and so had to be demolished in the interest of public safety. It has since been speculated that the reason given for the demolition was nothing more than an elaborate excuse to get rid of a building that was becoming increasingly more costly to run and repair.

Road Surfaces Dear readers, Urban roads can be more slippery than country roads as the coating of oil and rubber on the streets becomes more polished by the constant traffic, Take care in dry weather but remember that a light shower (especially on a hot day) is likely to make road surfaces especially hazardous. Look for oil spills on the road in places where cars stop regularly (junctions, traffic lights etc). Unfortunately, grip is often reduced where it is most essential.

High friction compounds (like shell grip) are applied to road surfaces near hazards and accident blackspots (roundabouts, junctions, traffic lights etc). Be aware that moving from these high grip compounds to a normal Tarmac surface can unbalance a car particularly in the wet, on bends and when travelling too quickly.

Finally, slippery spilled diesel is very common on bends, roundabouts and tight junctions near petrol stations. This is especially dangerous to motorcyclists so allow them plenty of space.
