Welcome to the November issue of The Sprotbrough Arrow.
What a fabulous 2018 we have had with regards to the weather! It’s late October and I am looking out of my window at a beautiful blue sky and a sunny, warm morning. Climate change or just chance… who knows? I am hoping it’s just chance, it has been a treat unlikely to be repeated for some time. Last month I asked for information on local 24 hour defibrillators. If you are aware of any please let me know so I can keep a permanent feature in the Arrow on the whereabouts. The deadline for the December issue of the Sprotbrough Arrow is Wednesday 14th November. The December issue will be delivered the last weekend in November. Best wishes Michelle Sidebottom Mobile: 07795 387937 email:michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk www.arrowpublications.co.uk

Richmond Hill Primary School News from Sept/Oct 2018
Welcome to the Richmond Hill Tea Room! We recently held the first ever Richmond Hill Macmillan Coffee event and celebrated the creation of the Richmond Hill Tea Room, which raised a whopping £566 for Macmillan Cancer Support! Staff and ambassadors worked together to create our tea room, which was stocked with all of the gorgeous cakes, biscuits and buns that our pupils/families had donated. We are incredibly grateful for the support we have received and have been delighted by the response to the event, which would not have been possible without the hard work of our pupils, staff and community. Our ambassadors were absolutely wonderful throughout the day, putting all of their energy into making sure our guests had the best time possible and doing the school proud! Thank you to Mrs Hutton, who donated beautiful floral centrepieces for our table decoration, and to everyone who donated their home baking, money and time to the cause! Bloomin’ Lovely Creations for St. Mary’s Our pupils recently made some lovely paper plate flowers for our good friend Rev. Barraclough, of St. Mary’s Church, which were to be included on a beautiful float made for Creation Fest! We would like to thank Rev. Barraclough for inviting our Year 6 classes to come and learn all about her work in the church. Alongside learning about the church, pupils took part in a scavenger hunt and art activities, and thoroughly enjoyed their visit! We’re also very excited to start another year of assemblies with St. Mary’s fabulous ‘Open The Book’ group, who have a long standing tradition of providing fabulous stories and assemblies to assist in our RE topic work!

Choir Dazzle at the Racecourse A small group of choir members were recently selected to perform at the Doncaster Research Conference, held at Doncaster Race Course. The group joined with choir members from Woodfield Primary, Town Field Primary, Bawtry Mayflower, Bessacarr Primary and Hungerhill School to create the Doncaster Research Choir. The newly formed group had attended two rehearsals at Town Field Primary prior to the event and performed at the beginning of the afternoon, garnering amazing praise and comments from all in attendance, who all commented on how fantastic they were! Well done, Doncaster Research Choir Time for Tea! We recently had our first ever Afternoon Tea with the Principal, in which a group of pupils were invited to have tea, biscuits and a catch up with our very own Mrs. Secker. The inaugural group were comprised of Year 6 pupils, who had all gone above-andbeyond in their home learning for their current WW2 topic. Pupils had baked traditional treats from the 1930’s, created Anderson Shelters and even done some family research, uncovering exciting artefacts from their family trees. One pupil even brought in a family member to give a first-hand account of life as an evacuee! Well done to the pupils involved!

Community News People Power!
Local resident Dave Glover joined forces with Warmsworth Parish Council to do battle with the ongoing problem of HGV lorries taking a ‘short cut’ when the A1 was closed or busy. The HGV’s were passing through Sprotbrough village and over the bridge to Warmsworth. The bridge, a 150 year old structure that is grade 2 listed and has a maximum weight limit of 7.5 tons was slowly crumbling due to the bombardment of lorries. This became a real problem last year, so Dave started a campaign to try and stop the lorries altogether. A group was set up on Facebook where locals who spotted a HGV sneaking over, would take photos and post them on the group. Dave would then contact the owner of the lorry and point out the weight restrictions on the bridge as well as the Warmsworth Parish Councillor Clarissa Jackson and issues of broken tree branches caused by the Sprotbrough resident, Dave Glover in front of a new sign lorries as they traversed down Mill Lane on the Warmsworth side of the river. Dave says “most were very helpful and they promised to advise all their drivers”. Unfortunately, this did not improve the situation so Dave decided to join forces with Clarissa Jackson from Warmsworth Parish Council, and Cynthia Ransome from Sprotbrough Parish Council. Between them all a plan was hatched to have all the signage brought up to date as the current signage was 25 years old and out of date making it difficult for drivers outside of the UK to understand. Clarissa worked on the signage on the Warmsworth side (A630) with her Parish Council, with Dave and Cynthia looked after the Sprotbrough side. Numerous meetings with DMBC followed until finally an agreement was made to change all the signs from the A1 junction at Warmsworth, and new signs from the Barnsley road Turn off on the A1 (A635) into Sprotbrough Village. The new signs would follow right up to • • Wallpaper Hanging Boat lane. The new signs Specialist would sport the latest • • Emulsion & All ‘International picture’ type Est. 1988 information making it much Paintwork clearer for HGV drivers to • • Clean & Tidy Work see and understand.
PAUL WHITE DECORATOR
• • Reliable & Trustworthy • Quality Work at Reasonable Prices
Hopefully this work will put • an end to the HGV problem and the bridge and local roads will be free from the heavy lorries coming through. Now the signs are in place, we all hope the old bridge over the River Don will stand for another 150 years.

School News from Copley Junior School Harvest Festival at St Mary’s Church It was lovely to see so many parents and relatives at our Harvest Festival. Our theme this year was ‘A pizza as big as the sun’ and children recited the poem, with each class adding their item to the pizza, e.g. tomatoes, mozzarella, olives and telling us many fascinating facts about them, including the food miles taken to transport these foods to the UK. As usual the children’s singing was fantastic, especially for our favourite ‘Harvest Samba’ song! We are very grateful for the huge number of donations given on both days, which were displayed on every table and ledge all around St Mary’s. All our donations were taken to Doncaster Foodbank, where they will make a big difference to many local families. I know helpers at the Foodbank are very grateful for our support. Young Shakespeare Company – Children in Year 5 and 6 thoroughly enjoyed a performance and workshop session of ‘Macbeth’ led by the Young Shakespeare Company. This provided children with a really inspiring and engaging first experience of Shakespeare.

Dog training – rain or shine! Thanks to a generous grant from Support Adoption For Pets, the local RSPCA Animal Centre can offer dog training and behavioural support all year round in all weathers. The new canopy completes a big investment in training facilities at the South Yorkshire Animal Centre, Bawtry. Over the summer, the Doncaster, Rotherham and District RSPCA Branch held a very successful six-week training programme open to the public. Now sessions can be held rain or shine. Support Adoption For Pets – a charity established by Pets at Home – has been very supportive of the work of the RSPCA Centre to rehabilitate dogs rescued from cruelty or neglect. Laura Messenger, Grant Funding Coordinator at Support Adoption For Pets, said: “It is a real privilege to help an organisation that works so hard to care for and re-home pets in need. They are doing a superb job, and the effort the Rescue Centre puts in is an inspiration.” There are many ways to help the Animal Centre’s mission to rehome and rehabilitate animals. You can volunteer, donate cash or goods, sponsor an animal pen through Safe Haven and support events. There are charity shops at Bawtry, Rotherham, Rossington and Thorne and now an eBay shop. The Animal Centre has a pet shop on site for all your requirements, and provides a pet cremation service and a memorial garden for your beloved pets. – find out more at www.rspcadoncasterrotherham.org.uk

Doncaster Community Arts (dart) are running a project to share Doncaster’s cycling memories, can you help?
Doncaster Cycling Stories aims to encourage people to share their memories of cycling in Doncaster. Do you remember cycling to work for your first job? Balanced on a friend’s handlebars as a kid, or taken a date out cycling? Did you ride the red shale track in Brodsworth, or visit Uppadines Cycles in Balby? What was your first bike? darts (Doncaster Community Arts) is looking for submissions for their project Doncaster’s Cycling Stories. It wants to hear about people’s most memorable or challenging trip on a bike, their greatest achievements, funniest stories or fondest recollections. You don’t need to live in the borough or be a serious cyclist to contribute – as long as the story has a connection to Doncaster, darts would love to hear it. Submissions are open to everybody. The project will run over 2 years, and a new film will be designed at the end of the project to bring people’s memories to life in a creative and engaging way. This will serve as a legacy of the project, and tour in summer 2019 to ensure as many people as possible have the opportunity to discover Doncaster’s cycling stories. You can find out more about the project, read some existing submissions and submit your own stories at www.cyclingstories.org. Alternatively, stories can be emailed to cyclingstories@thepoint.org.uk. The idea for the project came about from Doncaster Wheelers Cycling Club’s desire to preserve and record cycling memories for future generations. It is funded by the Heritage Lottery fund and managed by darts with support of Heritage Doncaster and Doncaster Council. Amy Knowles, Projects Coordinator for darts, says: “We are really pleased to have received support from Heritage Lottery Fund to create a new film celebrating Doncaster's Cycling Stories. We can't wait to find out more about this interesting part of Doncaster's heritage and would encourage anyone with a tale to tell, no matter how big or small, to come forward and share
