Community News Sprotbrough Christmas Lights A Great Success!
Sprotbrough Christmas Lights were switched on during a fun evening on the green on Saturday November 30th with around 700 people turning out to see the new village lights display. A large new tree donated by Brittains beverages had been hauled into place by workers and volunteers from DMBC and had to have extra assistance from a cherry picker to help dress the tree with lights. The large tree at the top of Boat Lane, sponsored by Sprotbrough Country Club and the Liz and Terry Bramall foundation was wrapped in bright white lights and looked absolutely magnificent! The Doctor’s Surgery had their lights on too as did the Church, making the centre of Sprotbrough something to behold. The celebration began with the ringing of the church bells. Ridgewood School Band then provided an excellent foot tapping performance and the young vocalist got everyone clapping. Copley School Choir turned up in large numbers to sing traditional carols and the Little Theatre Players performed for the huge crowd. Beth Dobing, local successful GB athlete did the honours of counting down to the switch on. So many other people supported the event, including Otto’s with their big muffin bake and some parish councillors sold raffle tickets . Sprotbrough parish council also provided funding for the road closure. The large crowd enjoyed mulled wine, buns, mince pies hot chocolate and chocolate coins and Santa’s. The marquee was once again provided by Keith and Dan who did an amazing job. The highlight for the children was the arrival of Santa with Doncaster Went Valley Lions who also made a collection for their good causes. The lighting event is planned to be bigger and better and we intend adding more lights to make Sprotbrough Christmas Lights the “Go to” pre-Christmas event next year! As promised we donated 10% of all money raised to a children’s charity helping us begin to focus on local good causes. Now our small group begins planning for 2020! A very big thank you to everyone for their help, hard work and support, including those who stepped in at the last minute. Same time same place next year!

Here we are into a new year, so let us see what the next 12 months brings. We sincerely hope it will be a happy and healthy one for you all. The new CT scanner unit at Doncaster Royal Infirmary should be up and running in March. It will be exciting to have the new unit finished and for you all to see where your generous donations have gone. At the time of writing (early December) our Memory Tree was in full swing with many memories already attached to the Christmas tree outside Boots. We will let you know how much we collected in Frenchgate Centre for our prostate cancer appeal next month. Our thermometer on the website, which registers the amount of all donations already received since April last year, totalled almost £42,000 at time of writing so we are steadily getting to our goal of £150,000. We are still collecting scarves, unwanted jewellery and any items for raffle or tombola prizes. If you have any items please contact us at 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), second floor (lift available), Room 209. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk. We are still in desperate need of volunteers to be on our informal fundraising committee and/or to help out with administration. Please do contact us if you can spare a few hours on a regular basis and come along for an informal chat – you will be made very welcome.

DANUM PROBUS CLUB danum probus.co.uk Danum Probus Club is an organisation for men who have retired or are semi-retired from their profession, business or other employment who want to maintain a social network with others who have similar interests. Danum Probus Club meets on the first and third Mondays of the month at Town Moor Golf Club, Bawtry Road, Belle Vue, Doncaster starting at 10 am. At this meeting we have a speaker, their subjects covering a wide variety of interests. (see www.probusonline.org/danum for the ongoing programme). Ladies and guests are invited to the Club’s Spring and Autumn Lunches and also to the Annual holiday which is usually in late June or thereabouts. Members also have their own lunches in mid summer and December. In the summer months the Crown Green Bowling Seaton play on the Armthorpe Community Centre greens. The Speaker on Monday 18 November Keith Lumley gave a presentation about the Normandy Landings which took place on 6 June 1944 entitled “Breaching the Beaches and Landings and Beyond”. This fascinating talk took us through the years of planning involved in the linvasion, not only the military operation itself, but also the huge amount of intelligence work done to wrong foot the Germans into thinking that the invasion would come at other locations. In addition to the invasion itself, Keith spoke about the Commanders, both military and political, on each side and how their own personalities had affected the result. He said that Eisenhower was selected as the Allied Supreme Commander not for his military virtues, but because he was a great diplomat who was able to get the “glory seekers” such as Patten and Montgomery to work together. Steve Parker and two of his colleagues took us through the history of Drax Power Station from its beginning as effectively two coal burning stations with three turbines each, to the ptesent day when it had four turbines driven by burning biomass to raise steam and two tuning coal when needed. The biomass mostly originates in North America, where waste timber eg branches, sawdust and thinning, material which was formerly burned to get rid of it. This is now pelletised and shipped to the UK, and then transferred by rail on a Just inTime basis. Development works taking place, along with Leeds University, into carbon dioxide capture. In January our speaker on 6 January is Roy Gunson with “The Uncertainty of Mr Heisenberg” the on the 20th we will hold our Annual General Meeting. Any interested men who would like to come to these meeting as a visitor to see what we do, with a view to joining if you like us, please call either Des Parks (01302 856188), George Kirk (07808191211) or Geoff Firth (01302 849734) for more information or come to a meeting and introduce yourself to the President or Secretary at the front table.

November 30th Sprotbrough; Three Christmassy Events – One Great Day! The weather kept fine and many folk came to one or more of the three events on 30th November. From 10 – 3pm St Mary’s Christmas Fayre took place with Santa opening proceedings before seeing youngsters in his Grotto. It was a successful day with busy stalls and games and with a Christmas Café in the Stable serving food and a cuppa. At 5.30 pm Sprotbrough Christmas Lights were switched on and, at the same time, the Festival of Trees opened in the Church. Here, in the lovely old building with music and lights were twelve trees, all sponsored by local schools, businesses, groups, etc. and decorated differently. A great day for the community in Sprotbrough!

Doncaster Rambler’s – A Misson Meander
The thing about Rambler’s local Thursday walks is they’re always on some-ones door step, and today was mine, which meant a lie in. Arriving in good time, on the green in Misson, it was great to see the usual gathering of faithful wonderers, all braced against the wind. Intriguingly Brian our walk leader had brought a guest along, whose milking parlour we would visit on route. Suitably impressed the ten of us set off north out of the village, then turned right towards Birkhouse Farm, and onto Brickyard Lane, then a short diversion took us to the farm. We were told the mixed herd visible in the distance, produced organic milk of the highest standard, which when processed was sold to America. They were one of only a handful of farms in the country able to do this. As we continued our walk Brian explained that much of the area had become flooded in recent weeks, and we would witness for ourselves the results. So it was as we looped round to follow the river Idle back to Misson, acre after acre of flooded fields, some under a metre of water, came into view, and rough estimates suggest it with be March before these fields are dry. It will certainly be worth another visit then, because for a short five mile two hour local walk it hard to beat. Thank you Brian For more information about the Doncaster Ramblers and future activity please visit our Home Page and download full copy of our walk programme https://www.doncasterramblers.org.uk/walks/walksprogramme-printed-version.html And follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/doncasterramblers/ where GPS Maps of many of our past walks can also be found

New Year tails Roxy is a 10-year-old Boxer cross, and she has been at the RSPCA South Yorkshire Animal Centre for 157 days. Roxy is a sweet girl who loves to be around humans; she likes a good run playing with tennis balls. The team promoted Roxy on social media platforms but it seemed that for no good reason Roxy would be spending Christmas at the centre. Every animal gets a Christmas dinner and a stocking full of toys and treats, but it’s just not the same as having home comforts. Then one day a gentleman arrived and very quickly it became clear it was a match. The week before Christmas Roxy was rehomed with her new family. This is just one example of the many RSPCA rehoming stories. Centre staff and volunteers appreciate each and every person who rehomes an animal. Remember your local RSPCA animal centre when you are looking for an addition to the family. During 2019 the RSPCA at Bawtry rehomed over 900 animals. As the charity is self-funded, it is the support of local Doncaster and Rotherham communities that keep the place going. Your local RSPCA team thank you for your support – and wish you a Happy New Year.

Happy New Year from everyone at Copley Junior School! Christmas was celebrated at Copley Junior in a number of ways including Year 5’s nativity; Year 6’s performance of ‘The Wizard of Copley’; a very busy Christmas Fair; carols to celebrate the Christmas tree lights switching on in Sprotbrough; a choir performance at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Christmas Jumper Day in support of ‘Save the Children’; a ‘Christmas Experience’ for Year 3 at St Mary’s Church; Christmas workshop activities for Year 4 at the Methodist Church; Christmas parties; Christmas lunch; Christmas disco and a traditional carols and readings service at St Mary’s Church. Our Year 5 pupils impressed everyone with their wonderful singing as they presented a lively nativity themed performance, ‘C-H-R-I-S-T-M-A-S spells Christmas’. The Year 6 performance of ‘The Wizard of Copley’ had something for everyone – fantastic acting, super singing, wonderful dance, humour, slapstick comedy, high tension, the triumph of good over evil and, of course, a happy ending! It was wonderful to see the children’s enthusiasm, confidence and enjoyment.
We were surprised and delighted to find a wonderful assortment of beautiful knitted angels tied to our school fence, so kindly provided by some Christmas fairies from our local churches. The children loved them! All the angels soon found a new home with excited children from Copley. Thank you for providing a moment of reflection about the true meaning of Christmas, sharing information about Christmas services and giving such a lovely surprise to the children.

Year 3 ‘Christmas Experience’ at St Mary’s Church We are very grateful to members of St Mary's Church for organising a wonderful afternoon workshop session for both Year 3 classes to help them learn more about the Christmas story. Children moved around the different 'stations' meeting the angel Gabriel, finding out more about the journey to Bethlehem, meeting one of the shepherds and a wise man. They took part in activities at each station including craft and dressing up. The children learned many new things about the Christmas story. Thank you to Reverend Amanda and everyone at St Mary's Church for providing such an enjoyable afternoon of learning! Express Events Over the last few weeks we have welcomed many parents/ carers and relatives into school to share in the children’s learning. As part of their project on ‘Predators’ Year 3 designed and made some wonderful models. These were displayed to create our gallery together with fabulous art, writing and science work. As part of their work children also created life size paintings of a tiger and a fossilised skeleton of a Triceratops made out of modelling rock and lots of white paint! We look forward to sharing more news soon. Best wishes,
E.A. Crayton Head teacher

Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club. On Sunday 15th December Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club marked the end of a successful year with a couple of walks in the Peak District and lunch at the Old Hall in Hope. The two walks on offer were slightly shorter this month to give time at the end to change ready for a lovely meal and a couple of pints before heading home. Our 9 mile A-walk started from Hathersage, up a steady climb to Thornhill, onto Aston, then across the Killhill railway bridge where we made our way around Losehill Hall. It was then down the Hollowford Road into Castleton. From Castleton we had about a 45 min walk along the river back to Hope. Not a strenuous walk, but enough to give us an appetite ready for our lunch. Our B walkers started in the village of Shatton for their 7 mile walk and followed paths and tracks through Thornhill, Top Croft, Aston and Birchfield Park, before heading via Spring House Farm and passing Losehill Hall and the Hollowford outdoor activity centre to reach Castleton. After a short stop in Castleton, the walkers descended into Hope to reach the Old Hall Inn. Our 2020 walks programme is just about ready and we plan to start the year off with a walk on 12th January around the Yorkshire Sculpture Park area. On 9th February, we're off to Southall in Nottinghamshire. What better New Year Resolution than to get out and about in the fresh air and enjoy our beautiful countryside with like minded people? If you fancy joining us, search Doncaster Pathfinders Walking Club on Facebook or checkout our website www.doncasterpathfinders.org.uk."
