Welcome
to the January issue of
Sprotbrough Arrow
I am writing this editorial as Boris Johnson has just announced we are moving to number 4 of the Coronavirus alert level. The message is to work from home if you can, covid passes are needed for indoor venues and the wearing of masks is essential in shop's, churches and other indoor settings. I hope that however ever your Christmas turned out, that you were able to spend it with the people you love.. Thank you to all the amazing Arrow delivery team for continuing to do a brilliant job delivering your magazine each month. I would also like to thank the advertisers who support the Arrow and everyone who provides community information including updates from our local schools. The February issue deadline is Wednesday 19th January 2022. The magazines will be delivered the last full weekend in January. Happy New Year Michelle Sidebottom Tel: 07795 387937 michelle@arrowpublications.co.uk arrowpublications.co.uk

Community News RETIRED – ACTIVE – BORED If the answer is “YES” to the above then DU3A is for you. Doncaster U3A is a non-profit charitable organisation which provides activities and interest groups for retired and semi-retired people in and around Doncaster. We have been operating for 27 years and currently have around 300 members. We offer more than 30 interest groups ranging from “active” groups such as walking, tenpin bowling and walking cricket, to more sedentary groups such as languages, history, quizzes and art. The groups are all led by our members, for our members. Since the end of March 2020, most of these groups have been unable to meet at their usual venues, however, using digital technology, we formed various groups on Zoom. This proved to be highly successful, with about 16 groups meeting this way. Over the last couple of months many of our groups have restarted meeting up, at their various venues. If you are interested in knowing more information our website is: https://u3asites.org.uk/doncaster or to speak to someone please telephone 07735436176.

Can't praise Matt's work enough. He fitted a kitchen for us about 12 months ago and we were so impressed we invited him back to panel our staircase and landing. We were not disappointed. His attention to detail is second to none. Matt is a true perfectionist and we would highly recommend his excellent skills to anyone.
Margaret, Tickhill.

SPROTBROUGH LOCAL IS A WORLD RECORD BREAKER Dave Glover from Sprotbrough has recently entered the Record Books by setting 2 New World Land Speed Records at the Historic Pendine Sands in South Wales. The famous Sands are where Sir Malcolm Campbell set a World Record in his car Blue Bird in 1924 (146.16mph). Dave was somewhat slower than Sir Malcolm, with a top speed of 49.930 mph on his 124cc AJS Tiger motorcycle. Although not particularly fast on the road, on Sand this is a "hair raising experience like riding through porridge", Dave said. Two World Records were set by Dave on a weekend that was organised by the UK's Straightliners association, one record for the half mile stretch at 49.930 mph and one for the quarter mile, 49.727 mph. Another Record for a 'standard' production road bike under 124cc was 'almost' broken on the following day’s racing when Dave was only 0.03mph off Breaking another World Record set by French Canadian Gilles Pujol in 1994. Dave plans to return to Pendine Sands next year in the hope of securing that 3rd World Record. We the very best of “The 12wish him Please mention luck.

Sprotbrough Christmas Lights A Glowing Success
Beth Dobbin and Amelia Beckingham switch on the lights The weather forecast wasn’t good for Saturday 27th November; high winds, rain and sleet! Many events were being cancelled so the Sprotbrough Christmas Lights committee studied the latest forecasts and weather radar. It seemed Storm Arwen would subside in time for the Christmas lights “Switch-On” on the village green! They held their nerve and decided the event would take place, putting out a post on social media. The winds subsided and the rain stopped and the community gathered on the green as planned. Mulled wine was served, along with mince pies and hot chocolate. There were glow sticks on sale and everyone enjoyed Christmas songs performed by Vicky Wilkinson whilst awaiting the count-down to switch-on! At 5.30 pm focus turned to the large Christmas tree on the green. Beth Dobbin, our Sprotbrough born Olympic sprinter was joined by young Amelia Beckingham, Doncaster’s Junior Civic Mayor who attends Copley School. They had been invited to perform the “switch-on”. The two placed their hands on the plunger as the crowd joined the countdown. Down the handle went and, with a big cheer, on came all the lights on the Christmas tree, the trees in the Churchyard, the trees around the surgery and the large tree at the top of Boat Lane. Then Santa arrived in his sleigh courtesy of Went Valley Lions and stopped to greet all the gathered youngsters, eager to see him. A wonderful and heart-warming community event, thanks to the support of generous sponsors! David Mears, Sprotbrough Christmas Lights

NEWS FROM RICHMOND HILL
Cracking Christmas Well here are our fabulous winners of the Richmond Hill Christmas Cracker Competition as part of our Advent countdown. What wonderful entries we have had. Congratulations to Charlie in Nursery and Isobel in Year 6. Both have won a £20 gift voucher for Waterstones.
Dashing towards Christmas From Nursery to Year 6 our children have all taken part in a ‘Santa Dash’ around the school site. There have been PE activities to complete in order to collect clues hidden around school. A lovely active morning has been had by all.
St Mary’s Christmas Tree Festival There was some beautiful artwork from our children as they celebrated their favourite places around Sprotbrough, which they then used to create baubles for our tree as part of the Christmas Tree Festival at St. Mary’s Church. The decorated baubles are stunning and the children thoroughly enjoyed selecting Sprotbrough landmarks for their inspiration.

Jumping into Christmas We have taken part in the NSPCC Christmas jumper day to raise funds for the charity. Well done to all our families for supporting this great cause.
Winter Wonderland We have been able to bring back Richmond Hill’s Winter Wonderland again this year. It has certainly been enjoyed by the school community and we hope the wider Sprotbrough community is enjoying this too. A huge thanks to all our donators to our Fundraising page along with the grant received from Sprotbrough Parish Council.

Year 6 Year 6 enjoyed a Zoom with the Royal Armouries for their Cornerstones topic. It was an absolutely fantastic experience. Our children viewed artefacts and were able to get involved in some role play to help them empathise with different figures from history. In the photos they were being trained as WW1 soldiers. They also looked at the British Empire's role in the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the legacy of slavery in WW1 and today. They were able to ask some really deep and thought provoking questions and went on to paint some wonderful merchant vessels.
Looking ahead to those long summer days! Well we’ve had a Christmas present come early at Richmond Hill for our Y6 pupils. After entering a competition to win a free residential by Mrs Williams, who organises all our visits, she was notified that we are the winning school! So our Year 6 children are going to enjoy a fabulous residential to Kingswood Peak Venture Activity Centre for free in the summer. We are all over the moon.

CHURCHES TOGETHER IN SPROTBROUGH
January Newsletter Hi everybody, firstly we wish to send all our readers our best wishes for the New Year. Also we wish to send our apologies for moving the Drive In Carol Service from Morrison’s to The Ivanhoe due to unforeseen circumstances. Despite the bad weather many did attend the Carol Singing which was an enjoyable event and hopefully will be able to repeated next year. This month we wish to concentrate our article on the very young in Sprotbrough and we have focused on 3 of these opportunities, Playtime, Sprotbrough Starz and Starting Rite. Keith Mears Chairman of Christians Together in Sprotbrough Playtime is a stay and play toddler group held at, and run by SMC. Those of you who have lived in Sprotbrough for a number of years will know there has been a stay and play group held on our premises for decades, and we are thankful for the legacy of those who have come before us, as we continue to provide a safe space for young families in our community. We are passionate about creating a space that feels like home, where children and adults are known and cared about, and community is created. Since returning after lockdown we have welcomed a new and smaller group of children (due to space restrictions) and they are enjoying playing, creating and getting a breath of fresh air in our grounds, whenever we can. If you would like to find out any more about SMC Playtime please email sprotparkplaytime@gmail.com Thanks, Sarah
Starting Rite

Sprotbrough Starz
meets every Tuesday term time at The Goldsmiths Centre on Sprotbrough Road. It starts at 9am and runs til 11am each Tuesday. It is run by volunteers and aims to provide a safe place for young preschool children to meet and play with others. A wide variety of toys and playthings are provided giving the opportunity for role play, craft work to extend the imagination and enable the children to practice fine motor skills, because of the space available ride on toys and slides are provided letting the children practice their motor skills. There is also a singing session which the children enjoy singing well known songs and those that are not so familiar. And in the midst of this is a relaxed snack time where the children sit together and share food. There are also a wide range of books available looking at Bible stories and the Christian way of life for the children to choose from and take home with them. Whilst the children are playing happily their parents and carers have the chance to talk to each other and the volunteers and so make new friends and discuss issues that are concerning them. Everyone is welcome to come along.

Doncaster Rambler’s Conisbrough Sprotbrough River View
Last time we did this walk, it was back in the summer, ten of us, in blazing heat. Today there were five, and the temperature had dropped. None of today’s crew had done the walk before so that was good, and me I just needed to remember not to miss that left turn.

The great thing about repeating walks, is you get a completely different perspective. The rustle under foot of autumn leaves, the greyness of the trees, the sun sitting lower in the sky. Autumn also brings a quiet tranquillity as nature’s pace slows. Mind you the police were active on their firing range, putting paid to any kind of silence. Anyway the route took us through woodland along the southern edge of the River Don passing under the Conisbrough Viaduct then through two metal kissing gates to eventually emerge at Sprotbrough Bridge, having stopped to admire the Weir first. The official coffee/snack break was taken near the Boat Inn. We picked up the trail behind the pub making sure we took the right hand path leading above the Sprotborough Flash. The area is popular with photographers but were told by one that nothing was happening apart from the odd heron “It’s too late in the day” he said “you need to get here at dawn, to see any action.” Moving on we eventually picked up the TPT which after a few minutes bought us to the magnificent sight of the Conisbrough Viaduct. Continuing up the side which is a bit of a climb, we continued left off the TPT on a metalised path. From here across the valley could be seen the iconic ruins of Conisbrough Castle. At a junction of paths we turned left to cross first a river the a rail bridge. Now getting back to the start meant walking up Station Road and following it round onto Dale Road. PR Please visit our website https://www.doncasterramblers.org.uk/ for latest information, including future activity. Also follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/doncasterramblers/ for details of past Rambler outings. Remember while out observe the Countryside Code and give way to other walkers.
