elcome to the February issue of the Sprotbrough Arrow. Well I do hope your January got off to a more motivated start then mine did! It’s the 18th January as I write this and I have just about got my mojo back! The weather doesn’t help but after the warmest year on record, we are becoming a little spoilt I think. Looking ahead, if you have any spare time to offer and like the idea of cleaning up our villages, DMBC are taking part in the ‘Great British Spring Clean’ on 3rd—5th March. If you would like to organise a group or find out more about this, please check the website www.keepbritaintidy.org or email stephen.racjan@doncaster.gov.uk before 10th February to register your interest. The deadline for the March issue will be Wednesday 15th February. The Arrow will be delivered the last full weekend in February. Over 1,500 animals rescued
The local RSPCA animal centre rescued, rehabilitated and re-homed 275 dogs, 442 cats, 405 rabbits, birds and small animals and 504 wildlife during the last year. This was achieved without Government cash or lottery funding – it was made possible by generous local supporters. Every day, the local RSPCA team based at South Yorkshire Animal Centre, Bawtry, are faced with cruelty and neglect. In the first few days of 2017 a little puppy was abandoned in an alleyway and left to die. He has been named Jack Frost and will need expensive treatments before he is ready for re-homing. Meanwhile, Ralph was the only surviving kitten dumped in a drain – his brothers and sisters sadly died before the RSPCA reached them. Ralph is now with one of the Centre’s foster carers. If you would like to support the RSPCA team, have a clear out and donate unwanted clothes, toys, bedding, curtains, books and bric a brac (phone 01302 719790 for a collection); or why not volunteer some of your time, there are loads of opportunities; or simply donate – text SYAC14 £10 to 70070 or donate online at www.rspcadrb.org.uk You can also keep up to date with the Animal Centre and all the news about the rescue animals, including Jack Frost and Ralph, at www.facebook.com/rscpadrb. The Centre is open six days a week 11am to 4pm (closed Wednesdays) and has a comprehensive pet store where all proceeds go to care for the animals.

Richmond Hill Primary Academy
Healthy Tree Richmond Hill pupils have been busy decorating our healthy tree with their healthy resolutions to walk to school or maybe to eat a healthier diet. Keeping Safe At Richmond Hill we place a great emphasis on helping our pupils to stay safe. We have E-Safety sessions to help to give our children an understanding about keeping safe on-line and the confidence to report safety issues quickly. We also recently welcomed members of the school nursing service into school to talk to our Year 1 pupils about feeling safe and feeling happy.
Bolts of Lightning Our Year 6 pupils represented Richmond Hill at the Ridgewood Pyramid Athletics’ Competition held at Dearne Valley Leisure Centre. The mini bolts of lightning achieved a very well deserved second place and were a credit to our school.

Cyber Crime and how to avoid it...
Cyber-crime is one of the fastest growing crimes both nationally md internationally. It affects major companies, small businesses and individuals. Major crimes involving large companies may often become a victim of cyber-crime but keep quiet about the crime as customers could lose confidence in the company if details were publicised. Small businesses could be affected to such an extent that they could lose customers, valuable and sensitive information or even cease trading. An individual could have their bank accounts emptied, have their computer infected by a virus and lose all their files or have their computer used to carry out a dedicated denial of service to a larger company. A few simple tips can help reduce the chances of cyber-crime happening to you or your business. Passwords can be cracked. Software is available that can assist criminals to crack passwords. Never Use Pets names Family members names Partners names Childs names Place of Birth Something related to your favourite sports team Nicknames’ Use a phrase including capital and lower case letters, a symbol and a number. I have used a four word phrase in a foreign language and included several symbols and more than one number Always • Keep a Clean Machine: Having the latest security software, web browser, and operating system are the best defenses against viruses, malware, and other online threats. • Ensure you have effective and updated antivirus/antispyware software and firewall running whenever your computer or mobile device is switched on. • Download updates to your programs and apps when prompted to do so … they often include security fixes. • Take great care about which links you click on in emails – they may be phishing. • Take great care about opening attachments in emails, even if they seem to be from people you know • Avoid suspicious website and torrent downloading. Many such downloads are not only against the law but also a major gateway for this type of cyber-attack. Sprotbrough Orchard News Our first few weeks back at Orchard have been as busy as ever. Firstly, we wanted to share with you the fantastic achievement of our Year Two children who put on an incredible performance at the end of KS1 Christmas concert. They performed on Tuesday and Wednesday morning of the last week of Autumn Term their adaptation of ‘A Midwife Crisis’ and did a fabulous job of remembering their cues and lines. We’ve definitely got some actors/actresses in the making! During that last week of term we also held our Christmas party and Christmas jumper day. Barney Maloney came to perform one of his routines on Thursday entertaining all our children from Nursery to Year Two with his cheeky antics. On Monday 9th January, a Space Dome came to school to present a show to the children across all year groups. They went inside the massive, air filled dome and watched a video of our sky at night. The photographs they were shown were real photographs taken from space by probes and the children were very excited. Following on from the Space Dome’s visit to school, the children have been finding out all about space. They have worked collaboratively making box model space buggies, sewing NASA space shuttles and sending BeeBot on a planet mission!

School News from Copley Junior School Birds of Prey visit Copley Year 3 had an exciting conclusion to their project on ‘Predators’, with a very informative visit by a local expert who brought a range of native and foreign birds of prey to meet the children. We learned many fascinating facts about these beautiful creatures and children were keen to take the opportunity to make new friends! Year 4 Training for the Roman Army To launch their new creative learning project on ‘I am Warrior’, museum staff from Murton Park visited school. Children enjoyed an exciting day full of activities including a themed presentation and interactive talk, illustrated with a wide range of authentic artefacts. This was followed with craft and artefact handling activities and an active session practising preparations for a Roman battle. By the end of the day, all children successfully passed their Diploma and are all now fierce members of the Roman Army! Year 3 Gods and Goddesses Children in Year 3 launched their new project on ‘Gods and Goddesses’ by dressing up as Ancient Greeks. Well done to all the children for your creative costumes.

Young Voices Concert Once again, our enthusiastic Year 5 and 6 choir took part in the Young Voices Concert at Sheffield Arena. After months of practising the sings and dances with Mrs Havercroft, the children were very excited to attend the afternoon rehearsal, followed by the concert itself. The whole performance with the dancers and vocalists along with the beat box crew was amazing, not to mention of course the incredible 5174 children in the Young Voices choir. We greatly appreciate that so many parents/carers and relatives were able to come in the evening to enjoy the performance. Well done to all the children for putting in so much effort to learn the songs and dance moves. As usual, the children were an absolute credit to the school with their enthusiasm and excellent behaviour. Homework Superstars We are delighted with the creative home learning projects completed by the children. For each project, children are given a choice of activities so that they can present research in their own way and can develop independent learning skills. Below are just a few examples from our recent projects on ‘Predators’, ‘Road Trip USA’, ‘Stargazer’ and ‘A Child’s War’. We look forward to sharing more school news next month. Best wishes, E.A. This lovely boy is Zeus, a 2 year old Whippet Cross. Zeus is such a friendly, affectionate, loving boy who adores people, and is so well behaved at the rescue – and good on the lead. He is great with other dogs, so could happily share his home. Sadly he doesn’t get on with cats. Zeus is neutered, fully vaccinated and micro-chipped. Unfortunately because of his colour, Zeus is often overlooked in favour of other dogs, and he really deserves a lovely home. If you would like to come and meet this smashing boy, please give Isle Rescue a call on 01427 728705
