Editors letter...

September certainly welcomed the early arrival of Autumn with cool windy mornings turning into warm windy days! I love this time of year with all the new colours outside however it would have been nice to have had one last month of ‗summer‘.

They say we are heading for a cold winter with snow again, if so we can expect snow

by November if not earlier!

Dog fouling Doncaster Council takes this problem very seriously, and is working hard to improve the cleanliness of the local area for everyone – including those responsible dog walkers that clear up after their dog.

What should dog owners do?

Responsible dog owners do not allow their dogs to foul public places. Ideally, dogs should be trained from an early age to 'go at home' in their own garden before or after a walk, rather than during. If dog fouling does occur away from home, the responsible owner will clean up after the dog. Any suitable plastic bag can be used, or special poop-scoop bags can be purchased from pet shops, veterinary surgeries or stores. Dispose of faeces in a poop-scoop bin or take the bag home. If this is not possible, as a last resort, double wrap the faeces in two plastic bags and dispose of in a litter bin.

How to Poop Scoop Simply place a bag over the dog mess and lift it whilst pulling the bag downwards. Or use two pieces of cardboard to "scoop the poop" and put it in the bag. Tie a knot in the bag and dispose of it in a poop-scoop bin or take it home for disposal. Your hands do not come into contact with the faeces.

Failing to remove dog fouling immediately is a criminal offence. Any person caught committing this offence in Doncaster will receive a £50 Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN), which could lead to a fine of up to £1000 in the Magistrates‘ Court if the notice is unpaid. Persistent offenders will not be given the option of a £50 FPN, as the Council will pursue a prosecution in court for such behaviour. Please note, there are exemptions from the legislation for guide dogs and those people with mobility problems that do not allow them to be able to remove their dog‘s faeces.

Dog fouling is not only unpleasant and unsightly, but it also carries harmful bacteria.

FUNDRAISING During last term pupils at Richmond hill took part in a Skipping event to support the British Heart Foundation‘s Jump Rope for Heart campaign. Richmond Hill raised a staggering £1,218.50 Well done and thank you to all those pupils who took part. Amazing!

Woodhouse Phoenix Presents Calendar Girls in Sept 2012 ―Woodhouse Phoenix‖ is a theatre group

attached to Hatfield Woodhouse Village Hall and raises funds for the hall by putting on productions such as pantomimes, cabarets and recently a highly successful production of ―Allo Allo‖.

The group is proud to announce that they have obtained a license to perform ―Calendar Girls‖ from 1st September 2012 at the Village Hall. As this is the first day that this play is released for amateur production, it will therefore be a national amateur premiere. The show is of course set in Yorkshire and is extremely funny with some poignant moments. A portion of the royalties paid by the group has already gone to Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.

I‘m sure you all know the story of how a group of extraordinary women, members of a very ordinary Yorkshire Women‘s Institute group, persuaded one another to pose for a charity calendar with a difference. The members of our group are keen to ensure that our production is a tribute to them.

We would be very happy if you would support us by coming to see the show. We will be giving updates nearer the time regarding casting and ticket sales.

SENSORY BUS As many of you may remember, after the loss of our son Christopher in 2006, the ‗Christopher David High bibic Memorial Fund‘ was set up and St Mary‘s Church in Sprotbrough adopted this as the nominated charity for their Lent Project in 2007. bibic is a registered charity and through it‘s intensive therapy programmes, helps children with neurological and genetic conditions such as autism, ADHD, Down‘s syndrome, developmental delay, cerebral palsy and many more. bibic became our lifeline when Christopher was diagnosed with non specific developmental delay and still remains a big part of our lives. To date, we (friends, family and colleagues), have raised over £10,000 and in April this year, we were informed that with the money, bibic had procured a large van which they were in the process of transforming into a sensory bus. The aim of this sensory bus is to travel the length and breadth of the country, providing support to families free of charge. The bus is not yet complete, it is awaiting a re spray and obviously funding is required to keep it mobile. We were asked to name this bus and chose quite simply, ‗Christopher‘s Sensory Bus‘.

As a family, we continue to raise awareness of the work bibic undertakes as sadly, it still remains undiscovered amongst many. Over the last few years, various events have contributed to the ‗Christopher David High bibic Memorial Fund‘ with the next being the ‗Bupa Great Yorkshire Run 2011‘, on 9th October.

Dear Reader, I hope that all those of you who frequented the races had a memorable and profitable experience. During Leger Week it is rewarding for a salon owner helping with customers‘ beauty preparations whilst hearing all about their outfits and then, afterwards, seeing their photos on Facebook.

But now the nights are drawing in, the temperature is lowering and it is that time of year when many of us cannot wait to put on our pyjamas early and relax in front of a warm fire drinking hot chocolate and watching television.

If this is you, the chances are that another treat that would appeal to you is a massage. Just the thought of one can make strong women go weak at the knees!

Massage is also something you can do yourself at home.

First it is wise – especially after a busy or stressful day - to take a relaxing bath. Next, using a little oil that can be found in most kitchen cupboards (for example, olive oil) pour a little into a cup-shaped hand and glide it along your skin. Always glide towards the heart – from feet to thighs and from fingers to underarm - as this will encourage your circulation.

Then, for areas where there is muscular tension present, using your thumb with circular movements, work over the area - not so deeply that you will be bruised the next day, but enough to ease any discomfort by releasing toxins and preventing a build up of lactic acid in the muscles. This is especially recommended after exercise to counteract aching muscles the following morning.

To aid digestion you can massage your stomach. Start at the lower right side (which is near the appendix) then work upwards with slow circular movements to just below the rib cage, continue across and then down the opposite side and repeat several times.

For a do-it-yourself reflexology treatment, apply some oil to your feet then put your knuckles to work kneading the soles of your feet in small figure-of-eight movements. Finish off with small kneading movements along the toes and either side of the foot.

Of course, if all that seems too much like hard work, we will gladly do it for you!!! A massage is a luxury treatment but with an affordable price tag - especially if a salon as offering a promotion, as I discussed in last month‘s issue. The hardest bit is deciding which one to have as the list is so long: Swedish full body or back massage, Aromatherapy full body or back massage, Reflexology, Indian head massage and Hot Stone massage - an especially amazing experience.

Many clients get the kids off to bed, take a shower and come down in their loungewear pyjamas for the last appointment at 8pm then they drive home calm, relaxed and fulfilled having had their little bit of ‗me time‘, a perfect way to end the day!

Doncaster Advanced Motorists Overtaking Continued

Dear readers, Police Advanced Drivers are taught a three-point overtaking method called the overtaking triangle. It defines the best line to take throughout any overtake manoeuvre and is the safest and quickest way to pass another vehicle.

In three easy steps you can combine this technique with excellent observation, anticipation and car control.

The Overtaking Position. Consider selecting a lower gear when your long-range observation indicates that an overtake may be on. Close in gradually to the vehicle in front until you achieve the ‗Overtaking position‘. Move towards the centre line to maximise your view. If the overtake does not come off, drop back again and return to a higher gear until the next opportunity arises.

The Take-Off Position. When an overtake opportunity arrives, move carefully and smoothly to the other side of the road to increase your view before you commit to the manoeuvre. All this takes just a second for the driver to assess. If everything is clear, accelerate quickly past the vehicle. If conditions are not right, drop back in behind the vehicle quickly and smoothly.

The Return Position. The final part of the overtake triangle returns you safely back to your side of the road, completing the manoeuvre. Steer your vehicle to the left-hand side swiftly and smoothly, and in as straight a line as possible. Take care and use your mirrors to ensure that you do not cut in too quickly on the vehicle you have just passed.

Two-Way Roads With three lanes.

Britain‘s dangerous three-lane roads have been much improved with the addition of white line systems, cross-hatchings and solid white lines. On some roads, particularly on hills, a solid white line is paired with a broken white line. This gives the uphill two lanes (so that slow traffic has a ‗crawler lane‘) and faster downhill traffic just one lane. However, where the broken white lines are on the side of the single lane, traffic in this lane is allowed to cross the line for an overtake where it is safe to do so. While the markings are clearly defined, you should always take care and maintain excellent observation on three lane roads, as other drivers may not have your appreciation of the system.
