Who would believe we would be basking in the Sun at the beginning of October and wrapping up in our woollies as we experienced our first frost by the end of it? Unbelievable!

Library Saga Draws to a Close.

Earlier this year protesters packed the Goldsmith Centre on Sprotbrough Road to demonstrate opposition to the closure of their local library.

Now, after a vigorous campaign it has been announced that DMBC will, after all, close the library, one of 14 across the borough to be sacrificed to achieve £1.2 million of savings.

The campaign to halt the planned closure has been led by Sprotbrough Library Action Group, set up out of the public meetings last year. The group has held charity mornings, public meetings and educational events at the Library but, it seems, all to no avail.

At a well attended and sometimes rebellious cabinet meeting on 12th October Mayor Peter Davies refused public and opposition pleas to be allowed to speak against the proposals and the Cabinet went ahead with plans to close libraries deemed too expensive to run. The decision was made following a series of delays as the council was forced to concede that moves to close the libraries had been made without the residents of Sprotbrough and other affected wards having been consulted about the withdrawal of their facilities.

In an exercise designed to fulfil their legal obligations the council sent out 65,000 questionnaires to sound out public opinion towards the proposed loss of their libraries, receiving over 7,000 replies. Political opposition from the majority Labour Group on the council also sought to stave off the closures.

Despite all efforts Mayor Davies argued that no alternative proposals had been put forward to save the expense of running the 14 doomed libraries.

The Mayor told supporters of Sprotbrough library sitting in the public gallery, ―I do not want to close libraries but nobody has come up with a way to avoid the financial drain that libraries make on the budget. I have to save £30 million that the government has withdrawn in grants to Doncaster, you don‘t.‖ Leaving the meeting a spokesperson for the Sprotbrough Action Group said that for months the Libraries department at the Council have failed

to disclose detailed costings for the building on Sprotbrough Road and insufficient attention has been given to other ways of financing libraries.

The library closure programme will be carried through in stages with Sprotbrough closing on 1st March 2012.

Eileen Harrington from Sprotbrough is to be presented

by Princess Alexandra at Buckingham Palace with the William Brooke Award on 2nd November for her charity work with Alzheimers. Eileen has been raising money for this cause for the last ten years by organising Garden parties, as well as carrying out speeches, talks, campaigning, attend meetings for elderly mental health as well as being Chair of Doncaster Dementia Forum and more. Eileen‘s husband had Alzheimers and this is her inspiration, he sadly died three years ago.

It’s been a long time since I wrote an update on the Don Gorge Community Group’s activities, but as we have something to celebrate this week I thought I should share it with you.

Our Conservation Volunteers have continued to meet on a fortnightly basis (next date Tuesday 18 October at 10 am at the Lock building on the island) doing all kinds of things to make the area more attractive, but towards the end of last year they began a new project. On the lane leading to Sprotbrough Flash and the woodland, there was a well with a pump which was used by the residents of Lower Sprotbrough until the 1920s. Since then, the site had become overgrown. It had been uncovered and investigated at various times over the years, but gradually it had become covered over once more. The volunteers decided to take it on as a project and so set about clearing it out again with the intention of sealing the well, which was beautifully lined with bricks, and building a cairn. Unfortunately, having started, the winter‘s snow and ice put a stop to it until the spring, but eventually on 19th April a time capsule was sealed inside and the topping out ceremony was performed. The cairn was topped with a stainless steel engraving of the photograph of it featured in Peter Tuffrey‘s book ―Sprotborough, Cadeby, Cusworth and Levitt Hagg‖. By July, planters had been made and filled with flowers to bring the project to an end.

With the aim of honouring the volunteers‘ commitment to the project and perhaps to gain a little publicity, we decided to enter it into the Community section of the Doncaster in Bloom competition. The award ceremony was held on the 12th October at the Mansion House and we attended with little hope of success as the judging took place only a few days after the flowers were planted and they really needed time to develop.

However, we enjoyed seeing all the other entries displayed on the screen and thought the photo of our cairn didn‘t look totally out of place amongst them, so crossed our fingers and waited.

Imagine our delight then when we heard the Don Gorge Conservation Volunteers Well Project named as the outright winner. Ken Green, one of the volunteers who had done a great deal towards the fulfilment of the project went forward to receive a certificate, vouchers for £20, an engraved trophy and a smaller one which we will keep after the larger one has been returned.

It‘s very satisfying for the volunteers to have their work recognised in this way as they work so hard throughout the year and we congratulate them on this very special achievement.

What’s Mr Dan juggling now?

Mr Dan has been a familiar face in our villages over the last five years. Carrying out workshops in schools, circus skill shows at local events and a regular feature at many a child's birthday party, he has become a popular and familiar face. The Arrow wanted to get to know a little bit more about the man behind Mr Dan, to find out where it all began and what Mr Dan is planning next...

When did you become an entertainer?

I began entertaining whilst studying theatre.

Inspired by street performers, I began entertaining at local gala‘s and attractions. When I first began entertaining in 1996, I was known as Dangerous Dan because I performed slightly dangerous shows, with tricks such as glass walking, the beds of nails and fire eating.

When did you start learning circus skills?

I could juggle as a boy and learnt extra circus skills like stilt walking in 2000. I had no teacher or Internet, I used books and practiced. I learnt as many circus tricks as I could to enhance my repertoire as an entertainer. In the same year, I helped to revitalise a children‘s project that had funding from Children in Need. The project had other workers who were skilled in circus tricks that I could learn from and the project is still running today. It is called the Sheffield Youth Circus.

What circus skills do you teach in schools?

Mr Dan‘s Circus workshops teach juggling, unicycling tight wire walking, diabolo, stilts, plate spinning, flower sticks, clowning around, pedal wheels and object balancing to children of all ages.

What do you do at parties?

I perform an entertainment show including juggling, unicycling, diabolo, plate spinning and giant circus ball. I also provide a disco with lights, party games, party dances, balloon modelling and the circus playtime; where children try circus skills such as tightrope walking, fun wheels, stilts and plate spinning. This two hour party package is called the circus party. There is a video clip of my party antic on www.mrdan.co.uk. We also can provide an animal act, magicians, face painters, discos, puppeteers and balloon modellers.

Your Circus skills parties and workshops show not only your own talent as a performer but also your ability to teach young children, where does this come from?

I qualified and then worked as a tutor at Doncaster College teaching performing arts and drama to post GCSE students. I enjoyed my time at Doncaster College and left to become a full time entertainer and in-school workshop tutor called Mr Dan.

What benefits do your circus workshops bring to children?

When children try circus skills, they are developing their hand and eye co-ordination and also their ability to balance. The most important factor of teaching for me is that the circus workshop are fun and safe.

Apart from schools and parties, do you carry out workshops anywhere else?

Our circus workshops go all over the UK. We are suitable for adult‘s corporate training days, recently working tutoring circus skills to vets and to the workers‘ of an oil company to enhance their team building training. Our workshops are also suitable for christenings, weddings and for community groups such as Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Scouts, Cubs and Beavers. We also deliver drop in circus workshops for shopping centres and events too.

What do you do at events? Have you had a favourite event that you have worked on?

For events I can perform stilt walking, balloon modelling, human statues and circus tricks like unicycling or juggling. My Silly Circus Show or my new Punch and Judy are also suitable for events. In 2006 I walked stilts at the World Cup in Germany which was a very memorable experience.

Tell me about your Punch and Judy show, why did you start this project?

I started swotting up on Punch and Judy because it is an interesting traditional art form from the 17th century that is now fading away. After two years of gathering information, building the booth and props, script writing and rehearsals, the shiny new Punch and Judy show was introduced in summer 2011. It has already been successfully received at parties, schools and gala events.

Dear Reader, I always feel that once Autumn arrives we tend to exchange our Summer wardrobe for our winter woollies, which invariably appear dark and a little drab looking compared to the bights, pastels and flowery patterns we have worn all Summer. Unfortunately, as the nights draw in our change of wardrobe all too often reflects our physical appearance and our mood!

Our skin becomes dehydrated because of the heating being turned on in the car, at work and at home. We tend to drink less water, favouring instead on the darker, cooler mornings a hot cup of tea or coffee. Hence our make-up doesn‘t appear to look as fresh and dry, irritated patches can form on our skin and extra tender loving care is in great need.

The two facial treatments options to explore nowadays are: the paramedical route, which will give deep long term results but does require regular commitment, or the beauty route, which will achieve less long-lasting results but is a pleasurable and easily managed experience.

Using good products at home will also be of a huge benefit. It is important to cleanse morning and night to remove all the dirt, debris and dead skin cells and, obviously, your make-up. Next toning the skin removes any excess oils and helps to close the pores.

Applying a day cream in the morning will protect and nourish your skin, and a sun block with a SPF of 30 will protect it from the winter sun, which is just as damaging as the summer sun. In the evening a night cream will feed the skin whilst you sleep. Also advisable is an eye cream, as this area of skin is more delicate than the face and needs a gentler product, and a peel or scrub product as well as a mask.

Doncaster Advanced Motorists Two-way Roads With Three Lanes Dear readers,

Britain‘s dangerous three-lane roads have been much improved with the addition of cross-hatchings and solid white lines. Double white lines must never be crossed and keep drivers going in one direction in two lanes and those in the other direction to one lane (there are exceptions to this rule. See the Highway Code) On some roads, particularly on hills, a solid white line is paired with a broken white one. This normally gives the uphill traffic two lanes (so that slow traffic has a ‗crawler‘ lane) and faster downhill traffic just one. However, where the broken white lines are on the side of the single lane, traffic in this lane is allowed to cross the line for an overtake where it is safe to do so.

While the markings are clearly defined, you should always take care and maintain excellent observation on three lane roads, as other drivers may not have your appreciation of the driving system.

Cross-hatchings separate potentially dangerous streams of traffic and drivers should know which ones can and which ones can‘t be driven on.

Cross-hatchings bound by a solid white line are there to separate carriageways or the approach to a motorway slip road. They should never be driven on unless there is an emergency or the police direct you to go there.

Crosshatched areas surrounded by a broken white line are used to separate traffic on some roads, which at some point may have had three lanes. You may enter these areas where you can see it is safe to do so.

These ‗hatchings‘ usually appear on roads with high accident rates. Take extra care when overtaking not to surprise other drivers who are not expecting anyone to drive in this cross-hatched zone. Refer to the Highway Code for more detail.

Dual carriageways are among Britain‘s most demanding roads, because, while the speed limit is the same as a motorway (70mph), there are many more potential hazards to deal with.
