Kingswood unveil Earth Centre plans Don Valley‘s MP Caroline Flint was one of over 250 people who visited the exhibition by Kingswood this week to unveil their plans for a new educational activity centre for young people on the former Earth Centre site.

St John's Hospice receives an air conditioner from Sprotbrough W I Recently, members of Sprotbrough W I Committee, (left to right) Betty Gibson, Janet Taylor and Olive Rimmer, were happy to help unpack an air conditioner at St John's Hospice. The unit was bought out of the donation given to the hospice after a successful afternoon tea last August. Sincere thanks goes to everyone who supported the event. Sprotbrough WI

A New Bus Service now runs every 15 minutes from 7am to 7pm. The service starts on 8th May and runs from Tennison Avenue and Anchorage Lane Estate into town. The return journey from town takes you up Sprotbrough Road, down Marlbrough Avenue, turning left on to Tennison Avenue and back up Sprotbrough Road.

Ms Flint, who had previously met with Kingswood to discuss their plans, said: ―Kingswood has a national reputation for its work with schools and young people, and many people hoped this site could have an educational use, so the reaction of residents I spoke to was very positive.‖ ―Kingswood seems very happy that they have a great site to develop. They will be keeping the existing buildings, extending the existing café and trying to make use of the environmental technologies work wherever this is possible. ―The plans for accommodation for 800 young people gives an idea of the scale and popularity of their centres, which explains why there will be 200 jobs created. I am excited that Kingswood‘s centres operate 12 months of the year, so the employment isn‘t seasonal.‖ Above: Caroline with Kingswood activity leaders, (l to r) James Hanson, Bernadette Hunt and Fiona Royles.

The last flying Vulcan bomber has returned to its former Cold War base. The iconic aircraft will spend the summer months based at Robin Hood Airport, the former RAF Finningley that was the home of the Vulcan in the 1960s. The deal could be the first stage in the development of a visitor centre that will eventually be linked to a facility to inspire the next generation of engineers and technicians. Vulcan to the Sky Trust CEO Dr Robert Pleming said: ‗We are thrilled that the last flying Vulcan has come home. We all feel that something very special could be created here, but I must emphasise that these are early days in the discussions.‘

Local Artists Exhibition & Demonstration Spring has sprung; the weather‘s warm; the flowers are out; and, in Sheila‘s garden, so are the paint brushes and easels. Popular Sprotbrough artist Sheila Bury will be holding an exhibition and demonstration of her work in the garden of her home on the banks of the canal at Sprotbrough Falls. Sheila‘s paintings celebrate the seasonal changes in Sprotbrough Village and the Don Gorge which she has been painting for many years. Sheila‘s paintings have been published in several regional magazines and newspapers. On this occasion she is being joined by another Sprotbrough artist, Terry Chipp. Terry‘s views of local landscapes are well known in the area and both he and Sheila recently donated paintings for auction in aid of the St Mary‘s Church roof fund, raising almost £500. For this exhibition he will be showing a mixture of subjects from landscape to abstract. Terry is a member of the Leeds Fine Artists group and has studios in Wakefield and in Doncaster where he holds regular weekly art classes. The event will be an opportunity to see both artists at work and chat to them about all things arty. More information about the artists can be found on their websites www.sheilamburyartist.com and www.terrychipp.co.uk . Bank Holiday Monday 30th May 2011 from 10am to 4 pm

Skincare Make up Nails Skincare Make up Nails As the weather improves it is natural to feel like going out more often, but, for many of us, socializing is a daunting experience – especially those whose confidence is affected by the appearance of their facial skin. Whether it is because they suffer from lines, wrinkles and sagging tissues, which may indicate premature ageing, or whether the culprit is acne, rosacea or acne vulgaris, facing the world can at best be something of an ordeal and at worst absolutely traumatising. For years beauty salons were just about 'beautifying' – that is, making people look good, but now the motto tends to be 'feel better = look better', and the emphasis has shifted towards unlocking that inner beauty that is stifled in many of us by unnecessary anxiety about our appearance. Recently we have entered a more paramedical world where remarkable results can be achieved without the extortionate costs you would find along Harley Street. This is one of the reasons why I recommended in last month‘s Arrow researching salons, their treatments and their products to ensure that your skin will receive the treatment it deserves. Beauty products typically lie on the surface of the skin, making it feel soft, but they do not have any effect on the deeper layers of the skin because they are full of oils, waxes, buffers and preservatives. In sharp contrast, paramedical products are prescribed specifically for your skin by a trained skin technician and contain pure botanical ingredients to stimulate the collagen and elastin of the skin, in the case of ageing skin, or the production of oil from the sebaceous glands and control of bacteria in the case of an acnified skin.

Q: I would love a skin peel to refine the surface of my skin but it looks 'scary'? A: I have seen over the last few years many cosmetic television programmes showing 'Skin Peels', which are performed in theatre showing skin blackening and peeling in sheets and involving subsequently a couple of weeks off work!!! Well, there is really no need for anything as drastic as that - you can experience a skin peeling treatment in a reputable salon which will achieve remarkable results with very little discomfort or 'down time'. Just make sure your therapist is suitably qualified and experienced. A website which I think you would be well advised to peruse in your free time is: www.dmk.com It contains a wealth of knowledge, fantastic articles and a gallery of amazing before and after photos, as well as a link to the UK site.

Doncaster Advanced Motorists Braking Dear readers, If you‘ve ever been in a nodding dog passenger in a car and got out feeling a bit queasy you‘ll know the effects of ill-timed braking. Achieving a smooth, progressive and effective braking technique will make every drive safer and more pleasurable for everyone involved. Braking progressively and smoothly you must develop superb observation and anticipation skills, as this allows you to begin braking earlier should any unexpected hazards arise. Effective braking is a skill that requires practice. You should roll the pressure onto the brake pedal progressively; do most of the braking in the middle phase; roll off the brake; again then select the best gear to make good progress. This method always produces the smoothest drive. Practice this technique by attempting to produce such a smooth drive that your passengers don‘t even realise you are braking; decelerating gradually so that the nose of the car never dips. Well-timed braking will usually make you faster from A to B. Take timing your arrival at a roundabout for example. Look well ahead and asses the traffic on the roundabout, then time your arrival so that you don‘t have to stop. The cars that sped past you as you were decelerating early, will be at a standstill trying to find first gear as you slide past and get straight back on the accelerator. Keep every drive as simple as possible by not overlapping braking steering and gear inputs. Brake in a straight line. Even with modern anti-lock brake systems (ABS), it is always best to carry out any firm braking in a straight line before making any steering changes. Any racing driver will tell you that using your brakes in the middle of a bend can upset the balance of the car and affect its handling. If a situation arises that requires midcorner braking, do so progressively to avoid locking the wheels. Vary the brake pressure accordingly to the road surface and conditions. If you are interested in the courses that we offer, you‘ll be able to find this information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk or Tel: 01302 886 276 Safe Driving Paul Tuke.
