Sprotbrough Elves Amba and Eleanor opening St Mary's Christmas Fayre Sprotbrough with Santa
St Mary’s Church held their annual Christmas Fayre on Saturday 26th November at the Church Hall. Father Christmas arrived in style in a lovely old sports car to an awaiting crowd both young and old! The fayre was buzzing with families and the cake stall had a range of goodies on offer along with the prettiest Christmas cakes I have ever seen! All handmade by volunteers. The Staff looked great in their Victorian dress and a good time was had by all! Santa‘s grotto was a delight with the theme this year being "Christmas World" and it was truly magnificent. It's amazing how the team come up with a different grotto each year! The Fayre was well attended and raised in excess of £3000 to go towards the urgently needed roof repairs to the Church. St Mary‘s Church would like to thank everyone who helped and supported this event.

Sprotbrough Christmas Fayre Charity Handbag Sale Success At Doncaster Market The weather stayed fine and cold but with no wind and no rain until right at the end when we were finishing packing up. Our stall was reasonably well placed but not on the main thoroughfare. It would, of course, have been better to have had more customers but they all allowed themselves to be mugged and hijacked and went off delighted with their purchases, a win for everyone. There were some lovely people who bought a handbag for a nominal sum and then gave £5 or £10. Quite a number of people bought several bags. Later we had people coming back for second helpings or sending friends and relatives for more. We were asked lots of times if we were going to be there again, but that‘s an effort too far, so not yet. .
The teamwork was ace! Ray and Karen, Sheila, Eva, Marion, Mirjam and Elaine were responsible for creating an enjoyable day. We asked for a free stall and were given one so I asked for a double and as there were empty ones around us we spread out and finished up using five stalls. And even then we didn‘t put out all of the bags, there were just too many. I said at the beginning a whole market place is what we really needed. We had arrived with two very full, very heavily laden cars. We finished with one laden car plus a bit more so certainly shifted some stock. And for all of that we took £227.70, which was more than we all expected. A brilliant result so a big thank you to everyone. The money raised is to help people in Doncaster with dementia, their carers and the Alzheimers Society. Eileen Harrington

Friends of Martinwells Lake Festive clean up!
Volunteers gathered for the last time in 2011 for a clear up of Martinwells Lake in Edlington. Said Maureen Tennison, one of the group‘s founders: ―We were determined to have one more big push before Christmas. It has been great to have the support of Phil Cole, the local councillors, Bob and Elsie, and Caroline Flint with their volunteers. We all make a great team.‖ Said volunteer, Phil Cole, ―Today was part work and part festive barbeque, but the Friends of Martinwells Lake wanted to cut back some of the paths around the lake one last time before the end of the year, and the weather was kind to us. ―The support from council officers for this project has been first rate. This has been a Labour of love and the Lake has never looked better.‖
The Friends’ next clear up day is on Saturday 14 January.

Dear Reader, ‘Happy New Year’
Welcome to 2012 – a new year, new start! January is a wonderful time of year to experience something new, and many beauty salons have fabulous promotions during this period, so it is wise to contact local salons or check out their websites to see what offers are available.
Slimming is often on the mind of those who have overindulged over the festive period, so a body wrap would be ideal to help lose those added inches and a feeling of bloatedness created by excess fluid Alternatively, another popular solution is a course of natural herbal slimming tablets, which help suppress appetite, enabling you to make healthier choices at meal times. They also boost energy, which generally uplifts and stimulates a positive attitude - also very beneficial when trying to lose weight.
Say goodbye to unwanted hair for good
Now if you were lucky enough to be given some Christmas money, the perfect treatment to invest in is VPL – Variable Pulsed Light . This treatment permanently reduces hair growth and, based upon personal experience of carrying out these treatments for over six years, the hair does not normally grow back (unless you have a hormonal imbalance). The Energist machine is the latest advance in pioneering Variable Pulsed Light technology. It is a quick, effective and safe treatment, which offers longlasting hair removal for all. It is clinically proven to remove hair from all parts of the face and body. The Ultra VPL treatment uses short, safe, controlled pulses of filtered light to remove unwanted hair in minutes. Once the hair is trimmed and the cooling gel applied, pulses of red light are passed over the treated area. Heat is produced and this travels down the hair destroying not only the follicle but also its ability to regenerate. A private and confidential consultation, involving administering a free patch test, is required prior to treatment. Costings are also discussed at this time, but many salons will probably have a promotion at the beginning of the year, enabling you to purchase a course of treatment at a good saving or pay for one area, such as underarm, and get the second at half price. As it achieves a permanent reduction, investment in this type of treatment is excellent value for money for those who regularly pay for waxing or electrolysis. No matter how old we are or what changes there may be in fashion. hair growth in unwanted places will probably never be in vogue!!!!

FISH PASS & SMALL HYDRO SCHEME AT LOWER SPROTBROUGH CHANGES PROPOSED TO THE SCHEME WHICH WAS PLANNED TO BE ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE RIVER
This is the proposed new site of the fish pass and small hydro scheme, along with the housing required for the electrical control unit. This area is quite narrow and is currently used as a picnic area. Just over the fence is Sprotbrough weir. We have been made aware that the Canal and River Trust (ex British Waterways) and the Small Hydro Company, which are in partnership, have agreed that siting this scheme on the south side of Sprotbrough Falls is not now viable and so they intend to build it on the north side, i.e. on the island. This has come as a complete shock to those of us who have been involved in the planning so far and we wish as many people who might have a view to consider the implications of this and contact us. We had always had concerns regarding the siting of the housing required for the electrical control unit, etc, but were waiting for the planning application before considering objections. However, although plans have still not been published, there seem to be many disadvantages to this proposal as follows:
10
This is considered to be an area of outstanding natural beauty and the island is a Site of Special Interest (SSI). We believe that anything which might undermine the fragility of the island should only be undertaken after stringent assessment and consideration of all the possibilities. Lower Sprotbrough has been one of Doncaster‘s most attractive beauty spots for hundreds of years, one could even say the jewel in Doncaster‘s crown, and as such should not be marred by large building/s which are out of character with the area.. Potential environmental damage to trees and habitat. Access of all plant and machinery would be via Sprotbrough village, down Boat Lane and over the canal bridge for a period of approximately six months. This would involve plant crossing the high pressure gas main supply to the village. Disruption of traffic flows over the river during construction and also during cable-laying activity following construction, with the likely use of traffic lights for weeks or months at a time.
Please mention “The Arrow” when responding to advertisements
Potential weakening of the canal bridge. This is protected at present due to the weight restrictions already in place on the river bridge. The wall at each side of the gateway access onto the island would be in jeopardy due to the present width of the gateway and the anticipated size of plant and machinery. Water flow rates are greater on the island side. Would this defeat the object of enabling fish to ‗climb‘ the ladder? Weakening of the canal embankment due to heavy plant driving on and off and destruction of the surrounding area during construction. The possibility of increased flooding. The island has been so landscaped that, when in full spate, the water will flow from the canal to the river over the island. If it should flood during construction, there could be a danger that parts of the island would be eroded and washed away, particularly as the proposed site is on a narrow section of the island. Could such damage actually split the island in two making access to the end of the island impossible? Because of the fragility of the island, it seems possible that this erosion could be increased, not only during construction, but in the longer term as soil disturbance might have unforeseen consequences in future. If there is any change to the way in which rising waters are allowed to flow over the island - or, indeed, if debris in the filter beds causes backing up of flood waters, it is possible that The Boat Inn and the cottages at Lower Sprotbrough could be more endangered than is the case at present. As we know, the 2007 inundation resulted in flooding of them by more than a metre of water.
Access to any viewing area (which was part of the original scheme) would only be available from the gate between the two bridges, which would be dangerous for pedestrians as there is no footpath on western side of the road. The possible loss of use of the island for picnickers and anglers during construction and into the future. Potential for loss of moorings for narrow boat users during construction and into the future. Negative visual impact of debris being held back on filter grids required to protect plant. Impact on environment and local residents from construction noise and activity. Noise from generator equipment, etc, has been an issue on some sites where hydroelectric has been installed. This will need to be taken into consideration because of its proximity to residents and the possible impact on visitors to the area who currently come because of the peace and tranquility the area offers. The desecration of this beautiful area would be a tragedy and any organisation or profit-making company which claims to improve the environment by destroying it should be prevented from doing so. Don Gorge Community Group
One would expect that a geological survey has been carried out by the Small Hydro Company to ascertain the possibility of this risk. If so, the results should be published. If not, why not? The installation of two buildings, one approx 12' square and 8' high - and even higher if it has to be raised up to take account of flooding. Even with environmentally-friendly cladding, the size and height of these would destroy the natural beauty of the area.

Doncaster Advanced Motorists WINTER DRIVING A Happy New Year to all our readers. Driving in adverse winter conditions is more difficult if you and your car aren't properly prepared. By following these simple guidelines you will be safer and ready to deal with winter driving problems. Is your journey really necessary? If it is, plan it and give yourself plenty of time. Tell someone your intended route and how long you think it's going to take. Listen to the radio for details about road and weather conditions. Clean the windscreen and windows using a demisting preparation. Check that screen washers are not blocked and that the screen washer bottle is topped up and has a winter additive to stop it freezing. Check that the windscreen wipers are in good condition and work effectively. Ensure that all lights, brake lights, indicators are working properly and the lenses are clean. Ensure that the tyres are in good condition and are properly inflated. Carry the following in your vehicle:- Warning triangle. Hands free mobile phone. Warm coat. First aid kit. Good torch. Seat belt cutter. Fire extinguisher. Travel rug. Tow rope. Bottled drinking water. Recovery service contact number. Good map. Pen and paper. Adverse weather and road conditions bring an increased risk of skidding. A skid does not just happen it is almost always caused by the driver's actions. Keep your speed down and increase your safety gaps when the road is wet or icy. Braking, steering, acceleration, decelerating and gear changing must be done gently and gradually. If a skid occurs, no matter how strong the temptation, do not brake! Lose speed by gently easing the pressure on the accelerator pedal and, if appropriate, de-clutch. Safe Driving. If you are interested in the courses that we offer, you‘ll be able to find this information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk or Tel: 01302 886 276 Safe Driving Paul Tuke.
