Welcome to the February issue of the

Sprotbrough Arrow Well hello February, you are always such a welcome after the long 31 days of January, and you are here a little longer this ‘leap year’. So, hands up who made it? Resolutions still in place? Dry January done? New challenges started? Or like me, are you just glad you made it… Whatever you achieved, February offers some light relief with the fun of Valentine’s Day and the Wild Bistro Café at The Yorkshire Hive have a great offer to tempt you with. With half term beckoning, Boston Park have some fun lined up to keep our younger (and older) people entertained with lambing week. The March issue deadline for adverts and content is Wednesday 14th February. The Arrow will be delivered by 1st March 2024.

Best wishes

RICHMOND HILL PRIMARY ACADEMY

A big welcome back to the new school term, from all at Richmond Hill Primary Academy! It’s been a great start back to the new term, with lots of exciting things happening around school. All of our year groups have been busy learning about their new topics. Here we have Year 6 during the launch of their new text, Skellig. They enjoyed a creative day, using chalk and clay and made some fantastic creations, well done!

Year 1 have been out in force, checking the weather forecast… watch this space everyone, we have young geographers in the making.

Our Reception children are enjoying their new topic, ‘A Starry Night’, looking at the constellations projected on their classroom ceiling and then researching into all things linked to space.

Year 2 have had an introduction to their new text, Stone Girl Bone Girl and combined this with their new foundation topic ‘Coastlines’. We can’t wait to find out what else they will discover in this new topic this term.

Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School

Working together to learn, grow and achieve our very best. School and Curriculum News (including belated Christmas news!) Celebration Time Whilst it already seems a long time ago, children at Orchard very much enjoyed the festive season! Back in December, it was lovely to see children dancing at the Christmas disco, playing games at their Christmas party and savouring a delicious Christmas dinner on the last day of term. They were all absolutely delighted that Father Christmas had time to visit school to present each of them with a gift too. Thank you, Santa! Concerts After a busy few weeks practising for our Christmas Concerts, it was fabulous to see the final performances in the last week of term. Nursery children enjoyed singing some of their favourite Christmas songs and children in Reception clearly had fun sharing their ‘Wriggly Nativity’. We couldn’t believe how much our Y1 children remembered as they told their Talk for Writing story ‘The Gingerbread Elf’ and children in Year 2 really rose to the occasion performing their ‘Fireside Nativity’ through a combination of narrative, song and dance. Well done to all children, we are so proud of you! A huge thank you to the staff who worked hard to make these concerts possible and to all the Orchard parents/carers that came to support. Christingle Assembly As part of their work in RE, the children in school made Christingles with the help of representatives from The Children’s Society. In the run-up to this occasion, many children had collected coins in order to support the good work of the Children’s Society. These donations were presented to members of the Children’s Society and were gratefully received. We would like to pass on a big thank you to Reverend Amanda for joining us at our special Christingle assembly.

Christmas Choir and Cookies As part of the music curriculum and our commitment to the National Music Plan, we give all children at Orchard the opportunity to sing on a weekly basis and provide them with termly opportunities to perform to an audience. Alongside our concerts last term, our school choir also met every week. It is made up of over 40 children who choose to give up a playtime to practise and hone their singing skills. The choir donned their Christmas hats and accessories, braved the weather in December and entertained parents as they arrived at school to collect their children. There was a lovely atmosphere which was made even more special by the arrival of Stevie the Donkey! The children were thrilled to see Stevie and his accompanying elves. We would like to give a huge thanks to Evie’s family for bringing him to see us. The cookies that were sold at the occasion were well received and helped to raise £112.50 for school funds. Thank you everyone! Mrs Westerman would also like to thank all choir children for their continued enthusiasm and the fabulous performance on the day!

Our Community Save the Children The children looked fabulous in their Christmas jumpers, shirts, dresses and accessories in December and we raised £318.50 for the Save the Children Christmas appeal. Thank you to all those that donated! Kindness Pledge At Orchard we have recently taken the ‘Choose Kindness’ pledge as part of Doncaster's Choose Kindness movement. This movement celebrates and champions kindness across the city and the fantastic community spirit that has shone through in the toughest times. Everyone across Doncaster is being encouraged to support by taking the Choose Kindness Pledge. Taking the pledge means that you agree to support the values of the movement and choose to spread the spirit of kindness across Doncaster. All children at Orchard have enjoyed sharing the ‘Be The Kind Kid’ book that supports and promotes the values of the Choose Kindness Movement. The story is about a young girl named Ellie who decides to set up a kindness club in school after finding out that Lilly, a new student, is being bullied. This touching story teaches us all that one small act of kindness can make a world of difference. They have also enjoyed listening to the story ‘Kind’ which reinforces the many ways that we can be kind to one another and supports the ‘Three Peas Charity’ which gives vital help to refugees from war-torn countries. There really is no limit to the benefits of choosing kindness and the powerful difference that this makes to people. One kind act can indeed spark another! It can brighten a grey day, touch a stranger's heart and inspire a chain reaction of kindness. So, if you haven’t made or For all your roofing needs decided on your 2024 new year’s resolutions being extra New showroom opening in kind is a great one to start with! We would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very happy 2024 filled with kindness and we look forward to sharing more Orchard news throughout the coming year!
