Welcome to the December issue of the Sprotbrough Arrow
This months Arrow is bursting at the seams with news of local Christmas activities from fayres, markets and carol singing to Christmas shopping ideas and days out to entertain the family. We are so lucky to have all of these events, many of which are organised by volunteers, so please give your support if you can and watch out for those mince pies (I started the end of October). I would like to thank all of the advertisers who continue to contribute to the Arrow, local residents, groups, organisations and schools who provide information each month for me to share with you all and the fantastic delivery team who deliver your magazine every month whatever the weather. The Arrow has just celebrated its 18th year in October and I am forever grateful for your support. The January issue deadline for adverts and content is Friday 8th December. Richmond Hill Remembers We marked remembrance day with a special assembly, poems and readings along with two minutes silence. Lest we forget . . .
Outstanding Achievement We are so very proud of Drew in Y3 who has been awarded a ‘Green’ Blue Peter Badge for caring for nature and the environment. She has been growing her own vegetables and walking to school - Fantastic Drew!
Teamwork Our fabulous Y5/Y6 netball team were recently at the Leger sport competition at Campsmount Academy with Mr Burke & Mrs Johnson-Quinn, they demonstrated fantastic teamwork and spirit.

Sensational Science Y2 have waited patiently for the bad weather to pass to head outside. This time, investigating microhabitats on site. They discovered and described perfect conditions for many small creatures to live. Y2 cared for the creatures and habitats respectfully.

Thorne Rural Lions
2023 Christmas Activities Thorne Lions have ha d a busy fruitful year taking part, and organising various activities. The Summer Walk took place again starting on Town Moor on May 14th. All proceeds were for “Parkinson’s Doncaster Support Group. A cheque for £3,387.98 was presented to them. A Lion’s Fun and Sports Day was organised with other Lions groups on Saturday 12th August. This is for all people with a disability and is extremely popular. The participants are so enthusiastic and take part in all the activities. They were so pleased when it was resurrected after Covid. The venue was changed and this year Parkland Sports and Social Club on Wheatley Hall Road was used. One of our staple fundraisers has been coffee mornings. These take place either in Hatfield Library or in The Barn, behind the Bay Horse, every few months. Now it is one of the busiest parts of the year for us. The sleigh has to be checked over to make sure it is road worthy, as it will be used most days in the month of December. The areas and dates of the visits are listed below. We were certainly very popular when the sleigh was back on the road. It will be manned by Lions members giving their support to Father Christmas. We will be carrying a card reader for your convenience, you just have to ask. Further details of timings can be found on the Thorne Rural Lions face book page.

December…..a month of never-ending activity with the promise of frost and maybe snow. Whatever it brings we hope you enjoy all the festivities and stay safe. At the time of writing (which was early November) the Memory Tree hadn’t started. It will be downstairs in the Frenchgate Centre outside Boots and will be there until Saturday, 9th December 2023, excluding Sunday, 3rd December. The stall will be manned from 10am to 3pm. You can purchase a token to put on your tree at home in memory of a loved one and/or write a message to leave on the Christmas tree in the Frenchgate Centre. If you cannot visit us in Frenchgate there is information on our website to make a donation or you could send a cheque to our office address. Doncaster Wheatsheaf Singers along with the Hatfield and Askern Colliery Band are holding their annual Charity Christmas Concert at Doncaster Minster on Saturday, 16th December from 7.00-9.30pm. Tickets are £10, Concessions £8 (Co-op members, senior citizens and children under 16). The price includes complimentary festive refreshments courtesy of Co-op Food.) SPROTBROUGH VILLAGE HISTORY GROUP REPORT 2023
It is amazing to report how
successful our group has become since we began meeting again in July 2021 and Cynthia, Mick would like to thank everyone who supports us by taking part in our monthly meetings. We now have approximately 900 followers on Facebook and at our October meeting 40 members turned up to a replay of Hugh Parkin’s talk about Levitt Hagg which he did last year, but many missed.
On 24 November, we look forward to hearing Steve Willimott speak about Brodsworth Hall, ‘A Family Home, Caught in Time’. We have had some interesting talks and events this year starting in January when Hugh spoke about the development of Sprotbrough Flash Nature Reserve, ending with a short film of local people skating on it in one freezing winter, which he also repeated last month. February was a talk on Giles Brearley’s book, ‘Early Inhabitants of the Dearne Valley’s , which was very interesting. In March, as I swanned around Madeira in the wheelchair with Mick at the helm, the group were having a look at ‘Delightful Doncaster’ with Neil McGregor, DMBC’s Museums Officer (Arts and Exhibitions). 28 April saw a great gathering of friends for our Coronation Party, when everyone came suitably attired and decorated the tables with coronation memorabilia and balloons. The buffet was super too. May saw us gathered at Doncaster Archives at the old museum in Chequer Road for a guided walk round the shelves to see what records are available for research as well as on computers, etc. June was our annual review meeting, when everyone agreed that we should continue to meet on a monthly basis and that the £2 attendance fee should continue. July was a presentation by Mick and I of the complete renovation of our 17th century cottage at Lower Sprotborough, with an invitation to interested members to have a look round it. Email: sprotbroughvillagehistorygroup@gmail.com August was a sharing meeting when members brought along artefacts fro everyday life, as well as old documents and maps they had in their possession. It could have kept everyone engrossed for hours, but time was limited. Must try this again. September was a presentation by Doncaster Waites Group who arrived in full costume with the mediaeval instruments the played. This was particularly well received by all present. Our year will end with a ‘do-it-yourself’ New Year lunch with entertainment by a musician/singer. We are already planning our 2024 programme and welcome anyone who is interested in Sprotbrough, or local history in general, and making friends. We have a great gang of young at heart members who support each other and welcome newcomers. We look forward to another entertaining year in 2024. To end, I will include an advert for the SPROTBROUGH oral history book, which will make an excellent Christmas gift for anyone who is new to the village or hasn’t seen it already. Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School CURRICULUM NEWS
Visit to Wilderspin School In order to stimulate their work on Victorians, Y1 and Y2 children visited the Wilderspin National School in Barton-upon-Humber on Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th November. They really enjoyed their visit but I think most of them were glad to get back to school in the 21st Century! They looked fabulous dressed up as Victorian children and it certainly helped them to feel the part. Thank you to all our parents for making such an effort! During the day children learned that children had to pay to go to school in Victorian times. Our children were surprised to hear that there would have been up to 150 children in the infant class who would all sit in the gallery to learn. They found out that Mr Wilderspin did not think it was right for young children to be scared to go to school so he did not allow his teachers to use the cane on infant-aged pupils. Instead, the children would have been punished in other ways, like having to hold a broom for half an hour if their hands or nails were dirty during morning inspection! Our Y1 and Y2 children also learned that Mr Wilderspin believed children should be able to play and he made sure all his schools had playgrounds so that the children could be outside in the fresh air. Our children were not impressed at the outside toilets and did not seem to like the idea of sitting on the toilet with nine other children at the same time! Children rarely smiled on school photo day in the Victorian times because it used to take such a long time!

Y2 Visit to Sprotbrough Methodist Church Year 2 children went to Sprotbrough Methodist Church on Wednesday 8th November to share their learning about Remembrance. Research demonstrates that children’s writing can be enhanced if they have a purpose to the task. The visit was therefore planned with this in mind, helping to provide children with a sense of audience for writing poems about Remembrance. Children had the opportunity to read their poems to representatives from the Church. Thank you Mr Banks for sharing the thought provoking story about The Great War. It was wonderful to hear that the children behaved impeccably during this visit and the visit to Wilderspin National School. Well done children – we are really proud of you!
Creating with Materials Children in Reception have been using a variety of materials to make poppies. They had to take great care placing such small objects to get the effect they wanted – this was really good practice for developing the fine motor skills that are needed to control a pencil when writing.

COMMUNITY NEWS
Remembrance Assembly Reverend Amanda led our school Remembrance Assembly on Friday 10th November. She talked to the children about what the different parts of the poppy helped us to remember. During their reflection time, children were asked to place poppies on a world map as they thought about how fighting affects people all over the world.
Casting for Christmas Crib Services at St Mary’s Church There are still some parts free if your child is interested in taking part in any of the Nativity Services at St Mary’s Church. These services will be on Christmas Eve at 2.30pm, 4.00pm and 5.30pm but your child only needs to be available for one of the three services. Please contact Reverend Amanda for further details.
Sprotbrough Christmas Lights The switching on of the village lights is always a popular local event. This year, lights will be switched on at 5.30pm on Saturday 25th November. In order to fundraise to help buy the village Christmas tree which has cost £1,200, programmes are being sold at Shires Stores, Goldsmiths Centre and Sprotbrough Library. The programmes are £2 per adult and £2 per child. Each programme includes entry into a raffle which will be drawn week beginning 27th November – your lucky number is on the front of the programme! All prizes (including wine for adults and confectionary for children) can be claimed by producing the programme. You will find the order of events inside the programme so you don’t need to worry about missing things. Copley Junior School choir will be singing at the event and I am sure they would appreciate lots of support from the community.
Children in Need Day Once again, we will be joining schools all over the country in supporting Pudsey Bear and the BBC’s fundraising efforts on Friday 17th November. We will be encouraging the children to pay £1 to come to school in non-uniform so we look forward to sharing some of their outfits next time along with more news from Orchard. Thanks for reading!
