A piano recital is always a strong attraction at Tickhill Music Society, and at their forthcoming concert it is provided by Victor Lim. At the age of 18 the South Korean born pianist was a contestant in the Young Musician of the Year competition, and he has been described in the musical press as having “great possibilities of nuance and perfect flexibility”.

At Tickhill on 21 April Victor will be playing Grieg’s Holberg Suite and a Chopin mazurka, as well as works by Haydn and Bach, and will finish with a sonata by Rachmaninoff. It promises to be a treat not to be missl

Sprotbrough Cricket Club

Welcome to the latest edition of Sprotbrough Cricket Club’s Arrow column, bringing you all the news and goings-on of a club at the heart of the community. We can’t believe we’re saying this, but it’s finally here! The new season is upon us very soon, and we can’t wait for the ride ahead! Be sure to follow our Facebook (Sprotbrough Cricket Club) and Twitter (@CcSprotbrough) pages for regular updates regarding upcoming matches, outdoor training sessions, important dates for the season and general news around the club!

Firstly, we would like to say a huge welcome back to our overseas player for the upcoming season; Baz Ward! Barbados is famous for producing iconic cricketing talent such as Garry Sobers, Gordon Greenidge and Carlos Brathwaite, and Baz is yet another Barbadian talent to ‘remember the name’ of! We’re absolutely delighted to be welcoming him back for his second season in the tropical paradise of Sprotbrough – who needs Bridgetown when you’ve got the Ivanhoe? – where he’ll be playing for our First XI again all summer. He’s couldn’t resist another season in Sprotbrough as ‘the club made me feel at home’ and that he’s ‘looking forward to playing and having another good season’. Go well Baz!

It all starts again for Baz and our teams in just a few weeks! Our opening league fixtures are taking place on Saturday 15th April for our First, Second and Third XIs. Our First XI travel to Town Fields to face Doncaster Town, our Second XI take on Caribbean (Sheffield) Sports at the Ivanhoe whilst our Third XI host Stocksbridge at Hooton Pagnell CC. Meanwhile, the first fixture for our Sunday XI takes place on the 16th April, when they host Brodsworth at the Ivanhoe. Good luck to everyone representing Sprotbrough in all age groups this season – we’re all behind you! Thank you very much to everyone who has signed up to play in 2023 so far, and who enjoyed our winter net sessions. After another successful winter, we’re looking forward to the beginning of outdoor training sessions. We are hoping to recommence the week commencing the 27th March, but this is still to be fully confirmed. Don’t worry if you missed winter nets; we’re always looking for new players and pride ourselves on being an inclusive club! More information on outdoor training will be available in due course on our social media pages.

Don’t forget that off the pitch, we have some very exciting days for all the family fast approaching. Our annual six-a-side tournament is taking place on the 28th May, in memory of our dear friend Alastair Graves. It’s a day which never fails to provide great fun for all the family and is open to entry for everyone – regardless of whether you play regularly or not! We also have our annual summer barbecue on the 8th July, another event which never fails to bring this wonderful community together. More details for these events will be announced very soon, so keep an eye out on this column as well as our social media pages!

We’re also always on the lookout for new participants in our 100 Club, a fun way to win money every week. Participants pick a number between 1 and 100 (although we are hope to expand beyond 100), which is assigned to a duck for a weekly virtual race. Whichever number duck wins the race, its owner can win a prize ranging from £100 to £150 (depending on the amount of people entered). More information is available from John Marsh or Lindsay Graves, contactable via the phone number 0745503777. Entry costs £2 a week and is paid via a standing order. Finally, there’s still a chance to become a sponsor of our wonderful club. These can provide a large outreach for your company at a reasonable cost, with the money being vital for the upkeep of a grassroots sports club in a fabulous community. Our Gold Sponsorship Package provides matchday exposure through a large advertising banner which is hung around the Ivanhoe during the game. This is available at a cost of £650 for the first year and £500 for each year thereafter. Please note the initial extra cost covers the cost of producing the banner itself. For more information, please see our social media pages or contact Robbie Graves on 07944389039.

Thank you as always for reading! Look out for the next edition of this column in May 2023!

NEWS FROM RICHMOND HILL PRIMARY SCHOOL

We love snow days

A snowy blast made for a great school day with all pupils enjoying a fun filled playtime. I think you can see just how much they all enjoyed themselves.

Practically Perfect in Every Way Lights Camera Action! What an amazing experience our Y6 children had at Ridgewood school for the ‘Mary Poppins’ Arts International Event. A brilliant opportunity for our children to work with and alongside current West End stars.

It’s a Goal!

What a fantastic day of sport our Y3, 4, 5 and 6 football teams had taking part in the Active Fusion event at Goals Doncaster. It was certainly all weathers, sun rain and even snow - but the teams played on with brilliant teamwork and resilience.

Sprotbrough Orchard Infant School News

It has been another busy half term here at Orchard Infant School! Here is some of our recent news…

School Nursing Team Visits

As part of their PSHE work, children in Year 1 learned about what parts of their bodies are private. The school nursing team joined us and led the session which also helped children to think about good/ bad secrets and where they can get help if needed. Children in Year 2 also enjoyed a PSHE session delivered by the school nurses where they explored how to manage their feelings and discussed why talking about how we feel can help us, especially if we feel worried about something.

Visit from members of the Royal Opera House

On Thursday 23rd February the children in Year 2 enjoyed a visit from the Royal Opera House when a team of staff came to deliver a 'Create and Sing' workshop based on the production of ‘The Magic Flute’. It was great that the children were able to meet and work with music and drama experts in the field of opera and we were impressed with how the sessions catered for the needs of younger children. Both children and staff found the sessions highly engaging and it really helped to introduce work that we plan to continue during our weekly music sessions in the coming weeks. A few quotes from the children following the workshops included:

'That was the best music session ever!'

'I loved doing the warm up games, especially 'Don't Copy Me' because you had to be smart to keep up! It was challenging but fun and I liked it because my friend got through to the final round!'

'I thought the music trials were good because you got to take part but also watch and give tips to help improve what other people did. I think I might want to be a producer when I grow up!'

Reception Library Visit

On Tuesday 28th February Reception children got the opportunity to visit Doncaster library where they took part in a storytelling workshop that looked at different traditional tales. Children enjoyed listening to stories and used props to act out their favourite parts. They even got chance to have a go at building bridges for ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’! Whilst at the library, the children also explored the museum. A particular highlight of the tour was seeing the huge steam trains! We would like to thank staff at the library and museum for such a fabulous experience.

World Book Day

On Thursday 2nd March children revelled in the opportunity to come to school in their pyjamas! Lots of families generously donated books to each year group and everyone enjoyed lots of storytelling opportunities during the day!

We look forward to sharing more of our news next month.

DONCASTER CANCER DETECTION TRUST

Hopefully, by the time you are reading this, we will all be enjoying some lovely Spring weather.

Can you help us? We are looking for an enthusiastic person to join our team of volunteers, someone who could organise a few events throughout the year to help with our fundraising. Also, our Secretary needs someone to learn the ropes in the office, probably on a job share basis. It would only take one or two hours a week on average. If you can combine fundraising with admin that would be even better!

You will be helping a local charity that is 51 years old. Through the generous donations from organisations, groups and individuals we have raised millions of pounds over the years. Our most recent purchases have been a second CT scanner, a biopsy machine for the Urology Department (plus two couches) and two dissecting racks for the Jasmine Centre (breast cancer) – all for Doncaster Royal Infirmary. As a local charity we believe that donations should benefit the local community. We are all volunteers, including the Trustees. There are no paid staff.

If you are interested in joining us and would like more information please send us a quick Email to info@dcdt.co.uk with a brief description of yourself and a telephone number. We will then contact you for an informal chat. We really do need your help so please do get in touch.

Our contact details are: 22 Wood Street, Doncaster DN1 3LW (entrance by the side of Kerry Gough Florists), first floor (lift available), Room 111. Tel. 01302 325029. Email: info@dcdt.co.uk. Website: dcdt.co.uk As the office is not fully manned it is best to Email or telephone in advance if you are thinking of coming to see us.

We hope to hear from you soon.
