News, News, News, News, News, News Sprotbrough Church Hall Grand Opening

Over 50people were there on Saturday 23rd January to join in the official re-opening of St Mary's Sprotbrough Church Hall. The hall has served the village of Sprotbrough for 52 years being a centrepiece of village life, and has had a makeover making it an ideal venue for a variety of activities from wedding receptions to play groups. Originally built under the auspices of the then Rector, the Revd John Lyth and his organist Mr George Bramall, Terry and Liz Bramall (their children), came to this happy occasion to perform the opening ceremony. They have very generously funded most of the refurbishment in memory of their parents and were delighted to see the finished result talking about all the happy memories the hall had for them. Liz was presented with a lovely basket of flowers and the Rector, revd John Richards said a prayer of dedication. This was followed by refreshments, sharing memories, fun and laughter. For more information about hiring the hall, visit the Church website or contact the custodian Mrs Sue Erskine Tel.01302 850890.

Your concerns are our priorities! Did you know that every community in Doncaster has a team dedicated to policing your neighbourhood? Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNT) were introduced two years ago to provide a local policing service in the heart of communities. The teams were set up in partnership and consist of police officers and council staff, who work with other agencies to focus on the needs of the local communities in Doncaster. The SNT‘s hold regular monthly community meetings and invite you, the community, to have your say and express any concerns or issues you have in your neighbourhood. At Edlington‘s SNT community meeting, concerns were raised about nuisance off road motorcycles. To tackle the issue, the SNT conducted a number of operations to drive the problem down using a variety of different tools and powers. Long-range cameras were one of the tools implemented to collate evidence of offending motorcyclists. The offenders are identified from the photographs obtained and the bike is recovered from the offender‘s home address at a later date. The most recent operation resulted in two high value, registered quad bikes being recovered. Sergeant Richard Vernon of the Edlington Safer Neighbourhood Team said, ―Nuisance motorcycles have long been an issue for residents within the Edlington SNT area. As a result of information from the local community, we are regularly conducting operations to target the illegal use of motorcycles and we will continue to conduct such operations on a regular basis.‖ To find out more about your Safer Neighbourhood Team call 01302 385178 or visit www.southyorks.police.co.uk and enter your postcode.

3 Generations Of Claypoles Remembered At Keepmoat Stadium

THE FIREPLACE

Gas Electric & Solid Fuel Following the death of Rover supporter, Mr Jeff Claypole from Sprotbrough, his widow and sister have had 3 bricks put on the wall at Keepmoat Stadium showing 3 generations of Claypoles‘, all loyal Rovers supporters. Thomas Claypole 1874-1942 who was President of DRFC supporters club. His son, George Claypole 1900-1981 who helped his father Thomas to lay the pitch at the old Belle View stadium. George's son, Jeff Claypole 1933-2009 a life-long season ticket holder, who took 'Rovers til I die' literally. Jeff was in a coma for 3 weeks, never moved a muscle but last May when his nephew visited him in Sheffield General and told him that Rovers had won 3-nil his eyebrows shot up in the air! Sadly Jeff died on May 8th. Three generations of loyal fans from 1874 to 2009, 136 years remembered forever at the Keepmoat stadium. by Christina Claypole

Your Questions Answered... Q. How often do dogs and cats need de-fleaing and worming? Anna from Hatfield A. Most cats and dogs will get fleas at some point. Fleas cannot live on humans but can cause distress to your animal, as well as skin problems. I would advise treating monthly with a good flea preparation such as Advantage. This involves using a pipette that is applied to the back of the neck. Worming should be carried out every three months. Worms rarely cause visible illness but still pose a health risk to more than just your dog as they could also harm your family, other people and animals. Worming treatments come in various forms, the most popular being tablets for dogs and spot-on pipettes for cats.

Q &A with

Q. My dog has one nail that grows and falls off every time. I wondered why this happens and what can be done to prevent it? Debbie from Hatfield.

Send us your questions

A. Weak breaking nails can be caused by infections in the nail beds, particularly fungal infections. Other causes could be nutritional or if a nail is deformed in some way causing it to be weak at the base. When a nail breaks off it exposes the sensitive nail bed which

could get infected if left unprotected so I would advise that your dog is checked by a qualified veterinary surgeon. Rebecca Aldren Practice Partner at Vets4Pets Doncaster.

Take one shirt... I know, I know, I keep going on about how much a simple white shirt forms a key part of your wardrobe, but this season it is going to be massive with every style imaginable available in the stores. So, if you haven‘t already invested in one, here are 10 ways to wear it:

 Jeans, blazer and loafers (maybe add a little neck scarf).  Open down to the waist, with a camisole underneath and worn with jeans and ballet pumps.        

Roll up the sleeves, add a statement cuff and some earrings and a nice tote bag. Wear tucked in to a stone coloured pencil or straight skirt with a tan belt and some neutral heeled pumps. Add a statement necklace and a big clutch for a lunch or dinner date. Pop it under a tank top with boot cut trousers and add a narrow belt and a spotted scarf for French chic. Try it with a white vest underneath and some white drill trousers, add an animal print belt and some wedges. Keep jewellery simple in one colour, silver or gold. Wear a longer shirt open over your swimwear or fasten a couple of buttons and add a narrow gold belt, just below the bustline. Wear with your straw hat and gold flatties for a ‗Riviera‘ look. Wear some wide leg navy trousers and a striped cardigan for a nautical look. Or, add a striped vest under the shirt, with a red belt. Wearing a skirt or trousers, keep the top half white – either the shirt on its own or worn with the white top underneath and then pop on layers of beads to add colour. Simple but effective – understated black Capri pants, black ballet pumps and your white shirt tucked in with the collar slightly turned up. A string of pearls or similar and a nice statement bag. Try wearing your shirt under your classic shift dress for a fresh approach to business dressing. This can be layered with a cardigan if it is cold, or a long strand of beads to add some colour.

Don‘t forget, you can wear any style shirt in a number of ways – it really is the most versatile of garments. If it is really fitted it can almost be used as a little jacket and if it is really loose then it can almost be worn as a tunic top over leggings. Just think outside the box a little and have fun wearing it...

You know you want to!

DUST OFF THE DUSTERS WITH MOLLY MAID It‘s strange how this time of year triggers an urge to embark upon that most rigorous of activities - spring-cleaning! These days, this need not take up all your reserves of energy - unless of course you crave the satisfaction that comes from moving furniture and discovering for yourself how much dust and grime accumulates in those forgotten corners and crevices. Leisure time has replaced money as the symbol of success, and many householders are seeking a bit of help around the home so that they are free to get some well earned rest and spend time with their family doing the things they enjoy. Andy & Lynne Crewe owns‘ the local MOLLY MAID that cleans homes across the Doncaster area and explains the benefits in hiring a professional cleaning service. ―MOLLY MAID does not only guarantee the satisfactory cleaning of your home, but is also a reliable and trustworthy organization. When you are handing over the key to your home, and perhaps the code of your burglar alarm, you want a company that is fully insured and has a safe secure system when dealing with multiple house keys.‖ Andy & Lynne have been operating in Doncaster for the last 2 years and MOLLY MAID UK celebrated their 25th anniversary in 2009. As a result of their experience, and the thorough training that all of the maids are given, all of the teams are ready for a Spring Clean rush at this time of year. This means that a team of maids can work through the house surprisingly quickly and efficiently causing the minimum of disruption in the home.

Of course if you want to give it a go yourself here are some tips from the domestic cleaning experts at MOLLY MAID: Limit your cleaning products to a quality window/glass cleaner, all-purpose cleaner, tile/ grout cleaner and a toilet bowl cleaner. Apply the MOLLY MAID system on cleaning. Clean from the top of the house to the bottom and clean from top to bottom and from left to right in whatever room you are cleaning. This is the quickest and most efficient way to clean. Dust first vacuum second. That way any bits of dust or dirt will fall to the floor and be collected by the vacuum cleaner. Use a toothbrush for hard to reach areas in the bathroom and kitchen for example - around the soap holder, taps and drain. Streaks on windows are unsightly and tricky to eliminate. When cleaning windows, wipe one side of the glass horizontally and the other side vertically. This way, when polishing out streaks, it will be easy to determine which side they are on. For more hints and tips on cleaning your home or why you should choose MOLLY MAID visit www.mollymaid.co.uk Alternatively for a no obligation estimate please contact Andy or Lynne on 01427 875566.

We‘re going to Raise the Roof in more ways than one! On Monday 15th February 2010, and for the first time in living memory, a popular local landmark will have its appearance dramatically changed. Most of the St Mary‘s Church building in Sprotbrough is to be encased in scaffolding. ―Why?‖ you ask. Well, it marks the start of Phase 1 of the very essential repairs to the roof. This has only been made possible through the generosity of so many people with over £150,000 now raised towards the Roof Appeal. A raised roof will be erected to cover the badly damaged one and enable work to be undertaken. The Rector, Rev John Richards, and others at St Mary‘s wanted to mark this unique occasion with a simple ceremony of Dedication and HUGE thanks which took place on Friday 12th February at St Mary‘s Church. Representatives of the three local schools were invited, along with the architect and builders as well as the local community. It is not necessary to close the Church immediately and so it will be business as usual for a while. As work progresses, and it is deemed essential to vacate the Church, worship will take place in the beautifully refurbished Church Hall on Main Street, Sprotbrough for a while.

Our Visit to the Mansion House in Doncaster On the 1st of February we set off in Mr. White‘s car to the Mansion House in Doncaster ready for the green meeting that would take place there. Previously, both of us had taken part in an interview with Mr. White to see if we were fit for the job. We had to prepare a short presentation on green issues and climate change. When we arrived, we made a short walk to the Mansion House building and quickly walked through the door. After signing in we made our way into the back committee room where the rest of the children were waiting. There were children from many different Doncaster schools. In the conference we covered many subjects and shared lots of ‗green‘ ideas. After the meeting we shared a lovely buffet lunch before it was time to come back to school. Thomas D and Sophie

The South Yorkshire Charity Ploughing Match is being held on Sat 27th and Sun 28th March 2010. It is a charity event raising funds for the British National Ploughing Match being held in Lincoln next October. The event will be held at Lindholme (the old airfield behind Lindholme Prison) by kind permission of HM Prison Service Lindholme & Ken & David Chappell and over 100 ploughmen, including previous National, European and World Champions, are expected each day, with horses, vintage tractors and modern equipment. David Chappell is celebrating 50 years of competing in ploughing competitions by organising a weekend of events. He won his first contest in October1960 and has had 1st places every year since and has represented England at the World Contest on 3 occasions.

24

At the contest, ploughmen must plough 1/2 acre in 4 hours, the judges will look for straight, level furrows with all the stubble buried to achieve a clean level seedbed for the next crop and all the trash buried and sealed firmly in to prevent the carry over of weeds and diseases. A well ploughed field needs less fertiliser, less chemicals and uses less fuel to achieve a better crop, than a poorly ploughed field. The plough was invented 4000 years ago and has been gradually improved and ploughmen at this event will demonstrate the ancient art of using a plough to create the perfect seedbed. For more information or to obtain an entry form please contact David Chappell on 01302 840098/07703500412 or email alchappell@hotmail.co.uk

BEETLEMANIA

P DENT Complete Building & Window Solutions Yes! Beetlemania struck in Sprotbrough St Mary‘s Church Hall on Friday 12 February 2010. A horde descended upon the hall, first to eat a supper and then to play 12 rounds of Beetle. There were 6 year olds and 80 year olds, and there was cut-throat competition to be the first one to complete a Beetle in each round. What is more there were several prizes for the most artistic beetles. The picture below shows one of the winners. Not only was it a great social evening, but it raised £390 for the Children‘s Society, and that money will go to help children who are suffering in this country from injustice, oppression, homelessness, need and neglect. It was ironic to contrast the happy faces here in Sprotbrough with the recently published research finding that of 7000 typical children interviewed by the University of York 7% to 10% could be said to be ‗unhappy‘ or to have ‗low well-being‘. It is not just here that there is mania. Think on that.

The Narrowboat Experience... and I can honestly say it was a special experience! Wanting something different for a birthday present, I decided to contact Pat and Jim for a gift for my husband, Eliot‘s birthday. We were really excited on the morning of our trip, but I must add, a little apprehensive, taking a look outside and thinking about the terrible weather forecast ahead. We packed our car with all the usual waterproofs and drove to Walkeringham. On our arrival we were welcomed by Pat and Jim, who I must say felt like I‘d known for years, in a nice way of course! There, moored at the bottom of their garden was ‗Beautiful Baby‘, their 60ft narrowboat; surrounded by stunning countryside, a haven for wildlife, at a glimpse we immediately saw woodpeckers, coots and a wide range of other fascinating wildlife. At this point the weather looked good, no sign of rain and a there was a peep of blue sky ahead. On board, Pat took charge of the bacon butties, fantastic by the way, bacon cooked to perfection, along with a hot drink of coffee. We started on the journey ahead, towards Drakeholes for Sunday lunch. The trip would take approximately 2.5 hours. Eliot soon took charge of the boat, apparently he was a natural; typical! As the day progressed, Jim explained in full detail everything you should know about canal boating, what to do when approaching the locks, how to work the locks and of course covered all health and safety aspects. After all Jim is a qualified Helmsman Instructor, so you are in safe hands! Cruising down the canal was superb; it was like being in your own world, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. On mooring at Drakeholes, we enjoyed Sunday Lunch at the White Swan, which was very good. After lunch, we made the return journey back to Walkeringham. On the last leg, I took charge of the boat; having had bad experiences previously on boating trips I was a bit nervous; I don‘t seem to have any sense of direction! Sprotbrough Road Community Church (Methodist)

The Family Table What is trust? When we have family and friends we can rely on, and we believe what they say, we call this trust. We trust that their love and help is always there for us. That word brings me back to thoughts of my table. I trust (believe) that even though it‘s heavy laden, it will hold all the things I‘ve put on it, and I haven‘t had the leg repaired yet. I still trust that after all these years it won‘t let me down. Sometimes this happens with relationships. We trust people, trains, buses and taxi‘s will arrive when they say. These are just a few examples of ways we can be let down, they are times when our trust, faith/belief is misplaced. We don‘t always see the larger picture when these things happen, especially when it‘s friends and family. Maybe they have difficulties we don‘t know about, or we have put them under strain, so we must not forget to look at faults from all sides, and with a forgiving heart. Let‘s look to the one who NEVER lets us down. Look to JESUS; His light of love shines brightly for each of us whether we have accepted HIM as OUR SAVIOUR or not. Do you remember the song we sang as children, ‗Jesus bids us shine with a pure clear light……..you in your small corner and I in mine‘. We looked for the light then, and saw it, or at least I did. When we see His light, it doesn‘t mean that everything always turns out the way we would like, or expect, it to be. We can‘t see the path we have to follow, we must have ‗Blind faith‘ and trust that we are on the right path. We must go again to the Table of our Lord. Come round His Table of memories and blessings, let‘s stand there just for a moment. It was here that Jesus shared His last meal with His disciples, keeping them close in fellowship. They trusted Him completely, and we can trust Him too for all the decisions we have to make. We can trust Him to show us the right way even when we think it isn‘t. We can trust that He hears and answers our prayers, in His time, not when we want. It will soon be Easter, a very special time for every Christian heart. We pray as we come to the foot of His Cross, that all those who are heavy laden will come to receive His peace. We can always Trust Him to be there for us, even in this modern worldly world. We hope to see you all on our Palm Sunday Walk along Sprotbrough Road, with the Donkey. Happy Easter to you all.

Jean Scott

Doncaster Advanced Motorists Surviving Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) - a guide for law-abiding drivers. Dear Readers, Police using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems may pull over drivers who consider themselves law-abiding citizens alongside hardcore criminal drivers. Number-plates obscured by dirt or with incorrect letter and number spacing, that can‘t be read by ANPR camera, may be flagged up as suspect registrations and police sent in pursuit. Number-plates that have been stolen or cloned by criminals and used to evade prosecution for speeding, illegal parking, insurance and other offences may also land the registered car owners in trouble. And then there may be inaccuracies and delays in the data used to identify rogue cars. For their part, drivers need to appreciate that the need to keep their number-plates street legal has never been so great, and that failure to do so is more likely to bring prosecution for a Construction and Use offence. "Whereas, in the past, police officers may have unofficially turned a blind eye to number-plates covered in mud or customised registrations unless they needed to stop a car, ANPR may mean that the days of the fancy or dirty plate are numbered. "ANPR helps police to catch illegal vehicles and drivers together at the roadside, whereas clamping and removing rogue cars, although taking them out of circulation, rarely catches up with offenders who simply buy another cheap vehicle. However, there will be other drivers, whose number-plates are obscured or cloned, who may be caught in the net." From the point of view of police and other enforcement agencies, that any inaccuracies in data records held by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and any time lag in recording changes in motorist‘s circumstances may end up with drivers being caught by ANPR. "Sometimes, wrong information is fed on to the DVLA database by car owners, who may make mistakes or by criminals who try to create a false record. With so many sources of data, such as from post offices, MoT test centres, insurance companies and people who have sold cars privately, it is critical that it is all timely and accurate now that enforcement increasingly hinges on these records. If you are interested in further information regarding the courses that we offer you will be able to find this information on the Institute of Advanced Motorists website. Safe Driving. Paul Tuke.
